Im going to speak as a causal gamer from Pakistan, South Asia.
As a kid, and all the way into college, I never had enough money to buy a lot of these games, as my pocket money was limited around those years. I only managed to buy pirated CDs and DVDs of old games for years, having a few games but they ate up a lot of my free time (Age of Empires 2, Battlezone 2, GTA San Andreas and a few others). I had heard of Activision, Ubisoft, and other companies from friends who were showered in pocket money and had consoles for themselves while I only had a PC. I always thought to myself "One day, ONE DAY, I'll be able to get these!"
Cue the time I reach university, and I'm left ASTOUNDED at what the fuck is happening at these companies. Seriously, what. The hell? How is it that gaming as an industry has been more profitable than ever, yet plenty of big companies are being this inept? Whos running the show? Who are tjey hiring? I dont even think this is entirely a executive thing either, executives don't make games, developers do. And seeing how some of these people act on social media made me suspicious thar these aren't the best people for whats supposed to be the cream of the crop of the industry. And thats not accounting the horrendous price jackings that made these games feel that much more out of reach to me than ever before. Even with regional price adjustments, its too damn much.
Here I am, 2024, now with a job, using it as a safety net whole chasing my ambitions for becoming an independent writer and comic artist, while doing gaming as a side hobby on the weekends. Looking at the AAA industry fills me with nothing but apathy because this is what they wrought on themselves. They asked for this, they wanted this, and I'm just going to leave it at that. I have accepted that, for all these peoples claims of wanting a "modern audience", and making inclusive games, that I'm not really the target audience for them, because they sure as shit never considered people who can't afford these for various reasons. So I looked away and turned to the indie and AA scene and emulating and playing older games.
Make no mistake, this part of the scene ain't perfect. Emulation sites and providers can go down, and some indie devs are honestly not much better than AAA developers in terms of mindset, some being just as entitled and arrogant, you'll run into stinkers everywhere. BUT these games run on many types of hardware and are cheaper which is why I prefer looking here. Its got a lot of charm to it.

Always great for a new casual gamer to see the light. I have a ton of casual gamer friends who pretty much only play EA's Madden and COD every year and then complain when its just a battle pass filled broken mess. I'll try to tell them to play something else but they go right back once a shiny new trailer drops each year.

Time is a big one that not enough people mention. Having a time limit is one of the things I like about Helldivers 2 and the Vampire Survivors clones. You know exactly how long a gameplay session is going to be, because every mission is on a timer. That's not a big deal if you're going to spend the entire weekend playing non-stop... but for everyone else, it makes a real difference. It really helps to know that I'll have achieved something in the next 40 minutes, because I have only an hour available that day.

no matter the industry, the moment corporate greed finds a way in, it's the start of the end.
i don't blame devs, i blame the greedy stakeholders and their board representatives who make the decisions at the top, and whose strategy can usually be summed as : short term gain.

Devs are no different bro it is in their hand that the game is what it is, they aren't free of greed the days are gone when there were passionate devs now there are only greedy devs remaining (not all are greedy i dont mean that) which are releasing a game and dont care about the game breaking glitches and bugs and hope that some modder will fix it i dont care (u know who i am talking about) and it is not bad that dev add mods officially to the game as an update talking about the witcher 3 devs (after giving the modder his pay) and 1 more thing is that the devs can give a drm free game to the user by buying a game on steam or any other platform which gives a key to gog (talking about the witcher & the witcher 2 you get a gog key which u can redeem on gog to get a drm free copy of it) but some devs are just a##h0les putting launcher to their games when it doesnt needs any and wanting an internet connection to play a single player game like wtf why cant i just play it in offline steam mode why do i have to connect it to internet just to play a fkin single player rpg
Game isnt made by only the company it is made by passionate devs it you cant innovate then how tf are you crying about it got destroyed by the company backing us. They are providing and backing up you with resources they dont know how to make game but you do, so maje a good game and people will buy it

Sub #48, for as much as gamers are labeled as toxic, we are actually quite forgiving... People forgave No Man Sky, people forgave Cyberpunk 2077, and shit when we are treated with respect we make sure we spread the word about fantastic games like Witcher 3... The only reason why people are celebrating Ubisoft downfall is not because we hate them, it's because it shows that the market functions to some extent. That it is not sustainable being contrarian, hateful, and antagonistic to your customer base... Shit, we meme about Gabe Newell being god simply because he makes sure that the customer is respected (Which btw results in him having a networth of about 16 TIMES that of Satan 1 also known as Bobby Kotek, CEO of Activision...) I think stuff like that goes to prove that gamers are not toxic... it's the heads of the industry that are...

Mentioning Palworld and Nintendo, that's something that really scares me as an indie dev in a small studio. Nintendo's Palworld lawsuit, if they win, would set a precedent that could lead to indies no longer being able to make games. Nintendo filed a patent AFTER Palworld was released and are now suing them on that patent. They're also applying for that patent in the US. Imagine AAA continuing to decline, but they all patent all of their mechanics so indies can't ever do what Palworld did again. This is the first time I'm legit worried about my ability to make games in the future. This is dangerous and needs to be talked about more.

@@fray989 it is insane what is happening. This is the kind of situation that I would hope the majority of the gaming community would hold Nintendo accountable to. I've been shouting about this for years. I have touched a Ubisoft or EA game since 2013 and it's been over 10 years for people to stop buying the trash and now it's too late. They have too much money and a monopoly. It essentially comes down to three things.
    1. They think releasing a mediocre game is fine. You've been buying them for years, doing the battle passes, pre order bullshit. Rewarding them for it. So that's what they think is good, that's what reviewers think people want.
    2. Toxic "fans". Games haven't gotten worse, they are still releasing the same mediocre crap. The only difference if that they now have women in. And now it's suddenly a problem now? No, the community is just shitty now.
    3. Price Vs expectations. The higher the price the higher the expectations. You buy a game for £20 and it's buggy, who cares. Buy it for £80, now that's a problem.
What's the solution? Simple. Don't preorder, don't buy until the price drops, don't buy in game currency. and, most importantly, don't listen to bullshit review bombers.
It's a character you only see from the back, in armour, with a helmet on, that isn't a real person. It could be 3 babies in a trench coat and it wouldn't make a difference. Cut out the toxic and you'll have more fun.

This is not an accusation, but I think this is true for a lot of people out there. The people who complain the loudest about modern AAA games and microtransactions are exactly the people who end up buying them anyway. I'm currently 36, just for context. I never really had the strong desire to play a game at it's release. Now that I'm working full time and have other obligations my wishlist keeps growing and I rarely buy any game at it's release. Why should I buy a new game for 60 €, when there are countless games on my wishlist, that I can buy for 5-20 €, sometimes even with all DLC inlcuded? Yes, the older game may have slightly worse graphics, but who cares these days? People hate so much on EA, Activision,... but I really don't feel much anger towards them. Back in the day I played a lot of titles released by major publishers, these days I play a lot more AA or indie games. Not because I made a big fuzz about boycotting them, I just got less and less interested in the sort of games they release. That's why those boycotts never work. The ones who really don't like these games, have already found countless of titles they enjoy, while the hype chasers and semi addicted live service players couldn't stand missing out on the next big thing. And when I give a AAA release a chance 4 years after release I don't really feel much disappointment if it isn't all that great. I spent only 5-20 € on it.
I know it might be more difficult with multiplayer experiences (which I avoid like the plague), but with sooo many quality titles releasing every month, I truly can't understand why people always gravitate towards the big releases on launch. Why not wait a year or two, let the developer patch out some bugs, and buy it for 50 % off on sale? Or if you don't care about graphics and are not interested to know about the hyped up thing, wait 5 years and buy it with all dlc inlcuded for 15-20 €. It always amazes me, when I hear about how much of the sales volume is within the first few months.
Only once in my life have I paid for microtransactions, with the company soon after deciding that earning these things through gameplay should be much harder and more costly in the store. I've learned my lesson and never did it again. When I hear that there is an ingame shop, I mostly won't buy the title (I may make exceptions sometimes). Hence I never felt the need to spam the twitter page of a publisher with tweets or write lengthy reddit posts trashing a publisher for including them. I really have a feeling that most of the complaints come from people spending way too much on the thing they are complaining about.
If you don't like it, then JUST DON'T BUY IT! Gaming has never been better. And I've experienced the last 30 years of gaming and know what I'm talking about. At least from the perspective of a mostly single player gamer.

AAA Companies like Ubisoft have to scale down their businesses and go private. The gaming business is lucrative in itself and game companies don't need to be listed on the stock market. Public listing ends bad for game companies, especially when they get access to ESG funds through political affiliation or activism. Look at valve for example they are privately held and don't engage in ANY politics. Steam as a platform is NEUTRAL. Just one quick advice, learn the difference between shareholder and stakeholder, idk if you made a mistake in the video regarding this but people please differentiate!

Time for a long and boring rant from a cantankerous old gamer...
I remember being excited for new games from many companies back when I was young. In my day, this was Atari, Activision, Infocom, Electronic Arts, Sierra On-Line, Origin Systems, Synapse, Broderbund, and a few others. Later on, Maxis, BioWare, Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Bethesda came on the scene. Today, all of these are either gone, merged into other companies, or in a state of severe decline and corruption. It's hard to believe that I used to be excited when I saw the old Electronic Arts logo, when I consider what the company has become today. In the 1980s, EA made or published some of my favorite games. By the late 1990s, I was starting to sour on them. They had bought and cannibalized Origin Systems, and they would do the same to Maxis later. When SimCity 2013 had its disastrous launch, that was the end of EA and its subsidiaries for me. I did not buy that game, and I have not bought anything from EA that came out afterwards. Activision, which was started by disgruntled former employees of Atari and was one of the best companies in the early 1980s, ultimately morphed into something far worse than Atari had ever been.
I've observed a number of problems with AAA over the years. Many of these problems are not new; the roots of the rottenness in the industry can be traced back to the 1990s in some cases.
Pursuit of short term profits: These companies are run by bean counters, not by people who are passionate about the products. Their only passion is hoovering up lots of money as quickly as possible. This leads to most of the other problems that I see.
Botched launches: Game routinely launch in an unfinished state and with lots of bugs. This was becoming a serious problem in the 1990s (Ultima VIII and IX, for example) and the ease of distributing patches online has made this practice a lot more feasible today. If a company has to make its quarterly numbers, it will push out a game to try to get the sales and offer vague promises to fix it later. Gamers routinely reward this, so it will keep happening.
Microtransactions: Horse armor happened. People complained, but they bought it anyway. The result is that we are now inundated with horse armor. A micro-DLC consisting of a few assets costs very little to produce, and the company can make a fortune by charging a few dollars for it. It's a much easier way to make money than to actually develop quality games, so of course they are going to lean into it. Offer these things in an in-game cash shop using in-game currency that can only be purchased in inconveniently sized bundles, and there is even more free money for the company. Gamers eat this stuff up, so we will keep getting more.
DRM: Copy protection on floppy disks in the 1980s was a nuisance, but it could be bypassed by cracking programs or by buying a mod for the disk drive that made it possible to copy these disks. Now, there is always-online DRM even in single player games. If the servers shut down, the game stops working. You don't own the game - you only rent it for an indeterminate time. Gamers don't care - they want their latest fix in their favorite tired old franchise even if it is infested with Denuvo. I won't buy any games that have this, but I seem to be in a minority.
Mediocrity: In the pursuit of money, these companies dumb games down, striving for the lowest common denominator in order to get a larger audience. Stories are simplistic, games feature excessive hand-holding, and it often feels like the latest game is a superficially flashier, but slightly worse, of whatever came before. Bethesda is the poster child for this. Going from Morrowind to Oblivion to Skyrim demonstrates a loss of systemic depth, a reduction in the quality of writing, a shift to generic, conventional fantasy settings, and a general simplification even as the quality of the world building and exploration remained high. (I haven't played Starfield, but I hear that Bethesda finally broke exploration there - definitely not a good sign for the future.) Mediocrity sells. Cheap, unchallenging entertainment has always been popular. Formulaic movies and simplistic romance novels have sold well for a long time. Why should video games be any different? To be fair, this is not new. The golden age of gaming in the early 1980s was also littered with mediocrity.
Pandering: This goes along with mediocrity. Companies make inept and inauthentic attempts to pander to people they want to bring into the audience. I'm a thoroughly "woke" progressive leftist, and I want to see more diversity and representation in games, but when it feels like forced pandering rather than something authentic and organic, then it doesn't work and can be outright offensive. I don't know many leftists who think fake corporate pandering and tokenism are good things. I also object to crude pandering to the old stereotypical gamers. Some of the pandering to potential new audiences these days is simply a crude and inept reaction to the pandering to stereotypical horny and violent young men that went on for a long time. Don't pander to anybody. Create a high quality, artistically sound, well written, and well designed experience, and the audience will be there.
Franchise Rot: This also goes along with mediocrity. Companies milk franchises to death long after they have been squeezed dry of all fresh ideas. I suppose it is easier and safer to keep piling crap onto old franchises than to actually come up with something new that will catch the attention of today's jaded audiences. I remember the excitement when the first Star Wars movie came out in 1977, and I saw it in the theater back then. I feel the polar opposite of excitement when I see how Star Wars has become a zombie franchise, kept barely alive by its corporate owners long after it should have been put out to pasture. I have no interest in engaging with any movie, TV show, or video game in this overexploited IP. This is but one example out of many; it seems like the entertainment landscape is littered with these. Though I know there are exceptions here and there, it feels like new ideas are no longer allowed.
Multiplayer: When online multiplayer games started to gain mainstream popularity in the late 1990s, I imagined all sorts of ways that it could go wrong, and it has gone wrong in ways that I couldn't have imagined back then. I will never touch an online multiplayer game. In addition to the toxic communities that I knew would develop, these games have been monetized to death. The subscription model that prevailed in the early days at least seemed fair. Now, there are scammy cash shops full of pay-to-win microtransactions, battle passes, and outright gambling. When addicted gamers drop tens of thousands of dollars in a silly online game, something has gone terribly wrong. To make matters worse, these bad practices leak into single player games. Online multiplayer games are a blight upon gaming in general.
Of course, it is easy to blame the big, bad corporations for all these problems, but gamers are also to blame. AAA companies keep making things worse, and gamers continue to eat it up. This will not stop until gamers withhold their money and look for alternatives. This might finally be happening in the case of Ubisoft, but it needs to spread far beyond that company. Almost all of my time in video games these days is in indie games. While the indie scene has its own set of problems (i.e. shovelware, incompetent asset flips, and unending early access), there are plenty of bright spots. It is possible to buy a high quality game with a single purchase on GOG, download the DRM-free offline installer so that I actually own the game, and enjoy it without having to be annoyed by all the AAA baggage.
I probably shouldn't post these long rants. I know nobody will have the patience to read through it, but I feel compelled to get it out of my system. I guess I'm just an old lady yelling at clouds, and my rambling screeds will have no impact on the world.

I keep saying the exact thing you wrote about pandering. There are so many grifters pretending pandering never happened back in the good old times, most of their audience doesn't even remember, because they are 16-25. I played countless games that pandered to a young male audience, inserting female love interest, that had less caracter than a card board cut out. If they would've given them any sort of personality, some people could've disliked it, so make it a stupid woman that tells you how great you are. I still have a very deep suspision when a female love interest is introduced that it will be just like that. Even though the writing of love interests has gotten much better since then, but old habits die hard. In the 2000s it wasn't uncommon for games being marketet as the games you mom would hate, wich I found pathetic even though I was still underage the first half of it. They would often feature shocking violence and edgy humor. I don't mind these things necessarily if done well, Duke Nukem (the original one) was a game that I enjoyed quite a bit. But the developers of that game were competent and crafted a really good experience.
Games always pandered to certain demographics. It's only these days that so many people pretend like it's a totally new thing and games are getting so much worse because of it.
I mostly agree with your other points. I don't have many things to add. I just felt happy that someone states the obvious. There are so many channels out there who pretend this was never the case.

I have been playing games for many years. I have moved from being a player to developing. The first games I came into contact with were actually Minesweeper, Solitaire, Tetris and War for Windows 2000. Games have changed a lot in this process. The original games could bring happiness in a simple way, whether it was cooperative or single player. I am not sure whether it was in 2008 or 2012, I gradually lost interest in 3A game manufacturers. Initially, their games took 3-5 years to produce. Later, they started to release the same games every year. For example, Ubisoft. I still like AC trilogy, Black Flag and other works. But I don’t like all of them. Because my country has a weak sense of copyright. I started buying genuine games very late. From a player’s perspective, piracy has its benefits. Piracy is equivalent to QA testing. To test whether the game is worth buying. For games released today, I still recommend playing pirated games first, and if the game is fun enough, then buy the official version. But I have to say that in the changes over the past 20 years. About 2016, the graphics of games have stagnated. Today's games require very high computer configuration, but the graphics have only slightly improved. It's even hard to see 4K textures. Even though the game supports 4K resolution, it doesn't mean the textures are at 4K level. The game graphics are not as good as expected. After all these things, I decided to make my own games. I am very dissatisfied with these big game companies. They deceive customers in exchange for money. If the game is not fun, players will not buy it at all. Boycott is really meaningless.

Good video, as much as I am obliged to jump on the bandwagon against AAA games and being sad/doom/gloom with everybody. I chose to now be careful with what games I purchase. Is this good for me? Does it look fun? What can I promise me? The last 20 or so years, I'm 25, have been rough and we have been through thick & thin. For Halo, I did NOT feel any dissonance or hatred towards 343i or where the franchise was going. I was merely focusing on education in real life, going to college, making friends. When I come back to Halo, I never felt *disappointed* or *letdown* why? Because Destiny exists. Bungie, the studio that we once praised and glorified in the 2000s, now has become a former shell of itself.
Destiny was one of those games that I played Day one and it felt invigorating and engaging. Yeah the expansions and financial decisions are questioning, but last year was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Lance Reddick died, the last Expansion was just another cash grab. And I can no longer play it. But I'll cherish those memories. Right now, indie games have flooded the market and it's been fun. Another Crab's Treasure, Still Wakes the Deep, Vampire Survivors, very fun games I accessed via GamePass. I have no doubt that Halo's new leadership will pivot the series in a better direction as we saw with Gears E-Day. Microsoft just needs to focus on their games.

Now that PSN when down and I lost access to all my games and made all hardware unplayable disk games PS3 and PS4 (have not got back to see if I can play). I will have to get a PC or give up gaming. I am old enough to remember when very few games were sold broken at launch and saving the game was just don't turn it off and hope 3 lives could last until the end of the game. AAA gaming is now full micro transactions, broken at launch games. I hope the can find a way to get unskippable ads into the games we are renting. While this is controversial to say, I believe it's objectively true; we can't ignore the role DEI initiatives are having in this. People often talk about "shareholders" being the reason for the decline of gaming, and DEI is tied directly to that. For example, blackrock-who's influence and total assets are beyond our comprehension-owns significant shares in Activision. Blackrock pushes these initiatives as a requirement. The obvious problem here being these companies are hiring less competent developers with no real attachment to the products their working on, as is required under these initiatives.

I bet if I broke down what DEI actually means and avoided using the buzzwords, that right wing influencers use, to stirr up anger and hatred, most people would agree that these things are good. If you are listening to the trash these individuals are saying, you will come to the conclusion, that they have no idea what the word actually means. I've heard them use the word to describe the design of games countless times, when it is an organizational framework! It has nothing to do with the product that an organization produces, it has to do with the practices within the organization itself.
Let me give you an example. Let's say you own a company. Wouldn't you want to evaluate how hiring and promotion decisions are made? You do want the processes in your company to be effective, I assume. If you just trust your managers to make these decissions without any oversight, your managers would most likely make biased decisions. A man with a certain background in his 30s might have a preference for other men within his age group, who have a similar background. Even if we ignore the issue of racial and gender bias completly and only look at other less controversial biases, it's quite obvious that these processes should be evaluated and adjusted.
Has it ever happened that a cynical executive promoted someone because it looked better to the public to have a female member on the board of directors? Off course it happened. But how often did it happen, that someone got promoted because he went to the same church or was just as enthusiastic about golf as his boss? Somehow these practices don't make people even a tenth as angry as the thought some undeserving women or black people getting promoted. I'm sure if it was possible to get objective data on that subject, the number of people who got preferential treatment, hired or promotions because of stuff completely unrelated to their profession (excluding race and gender), is much higher than cynical promotions to pretend to be progressive.
I won't pretend there aren't initiatives, that are related to DEI, that are utter garbage and that there are people who cynically pay some idiot some money for consulting, because it looks good to investors.
What I do however have a problem with, ist that there is an ecosystem of hate channels that periodically take some word, they have no understanding of and essentially make it meaningless by pretending everything bad is related to it.
Remember CRT? It may surprise you, but it was never taught in school and it doesn't mean what you propably think it means. It doesn't even matter to them. The words was useful for some time to make people angry, and then easily discarded.
What I do however agree with, is that there are propably quite a few people working on AAA games that are not really into them. That is just a matter of scale. When you have a team of 20 people working on a project, it's easier (but still difficult) for everyone being commited to the vision. When you are a big company with higher wages and a team of 150 people, there will most likely be a larger percentage of people who don't really share the vision. This is inevitable. Some might work there because they like their co-workers, it may be near a location some want to live in, some might be there for years and used to like the types of games they made, but either they or the direction of the company has changed.
Depending on the position of this person, this might not even be a problem. If someone is an engine programer, or mabe a game developer focused on creating environmental assets (trees, bushes,...), it might not matter if the game is an RPG or an action adventure. Sometimes important positions get filled with the wrong people. I have no doubt about that.
The level of paranoia and hatred because some women or black person could've gotten an underserved job or promotion is completely out of proportion. Especially since other forms of biases and the unfairness of them are NEVER talked about. Especially from right wing grifter channels.

@@baseballworldwide9439 Nothing about DEI requires, that people of different diverse backgrounds have to be represented proportional to their share of people in the general public. I worked for a larger company that was comitted to DEI (they didn't use the term, but it was exactly that) but because it was a company that was full of engineers, mechanics and electricians, there was a significant higher proportion of men both in the general workforce and especially in leadership positions. People pretend, that DEI forces companies to have a 50/50 split between men and women, even if the latter are less interesed in the position. Hence the hiring of unqualified and not passionate people. Nothing about DEI requires that.
Saying DEI ruins X, is the video game equivalent of blaming Jews for everything. No data is ever given or demanded by the audience, because it feels true.
