  • The military annulled the June 12 election that would have made MKO Abiola the President of Nigeria. Abiola did everything possible to secure a reversal of the annulment to no avail. He flee abroad at some point and later returned to declare himself as the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and called on the military to handover power with immediate effect. Abacha, the then Military Head of State was angry beyond description and caused the immediate arrest and detention of Abiola. Abiola remained in custody for four years and later later died in the custody. This video contains the speech that landed Abiola in trouble with the military.
In this video, we'll tell the story of how MKO Abiola declared himself president of Nigeria. This declaration led to Abiola being in trouble with the government, and eventually led to his death.
This video is a tragic story, but it's also an important one. By sharing it, we're helping to to contextualize Abiola's life and help to understand the events that led to his death. If you're interested in Nigerian politics, then be sure to watch this video!

To be a great leader goes very far from being a good man by virtue and integrity. You've got to know how to play the cards right because the field is full of many hypocrites, die hard politics that always have their ways. You need high level of wisdom and critical thinking to stand the test of time let alone save your own life. I just hope and pray God help us get it right in Nigeria and bond totally with our affairs.

I am convinced people deceived Abiola to come back and write such an audacious and ill informed speech. I honestly cannot believe he wrote that and read that out. Calling Military officers armed robbers and thieves, even a civilian President would have had him arrested. It was a matter of time, a waiting game - he would have gotten his mandate back. I wish he had smarter and more intelligent people around him.

Considering how Abacha was eliminated by Karma or whatever it is, I feel bad that things turned out for MKO the way they did.
Too bad, because he died for nothing.

Firstly there was no assurance he would have gotten his mandate back even if he waited for ever. Anyone who knew the kind of soldiers we had at that time would understand. Maybe you could say destiny played its game on him, but if you knew those around Abiola, I doubt if you would talk about him not having intelligent people around him. There was perhaps no Nigerian dead or alive that had the kind of resources around him than Abiola during the struggle in terms of intelligence. And they were highly diverse. You had the greatest group of academics, professionals in various fields, military officers, Islamic and christian clergymen, traditionalists, old, youth, students, artisans, politicians, foreign diplomats, radicals, conservatives etc. Perhaps the only class of persons that you didn't see around him were spirits bcos they were not material. If you get the details of all that transpired, you would understand how difficult it must have been for him to even process counsels.

Abiola was no saint and it’s fair to say he also helped contribute to the problem of Nigeria.
What finally happened to him could even be described as karma.
In the beginning Abiola after bribing the military had shady deals with that ITT contract which even Fela referenced in his song International Thief Thief.
Abiola used his massive wealth to help frustrate Awolowo’s chance of becoming President by camping with Shagari’s crooked NPN party which looted Nigeria’s resources.
Abiola realised late that NPN had just used him for his money and that’s when he decided to redeem himself and align with the masses.

Wow! What a courageous and a controversial speech. This speech shows that Abiola had unimaginable sense of hubris. He was either intentionally deceived, or had politically ill-informed advisers who advised him.
How can you write and read such a speech out loud. Even a civilian president would find this speech treasonous at worst, or seditious at best, and both carries some form of both legal and political consequences.
For anyone who disputes this assertion, and even though 1993 presidential election was much cleaner and less controversial than 2023 election; MKO Abiola wasn't suppose to give such a speech. Consequently, Peter Obi is wildly believed, by many Nigerians, to have won the 2023 presidential election; he would NOT dear to make such or a seditious speech as this one without any ramification from BAT's administration. A ramification that would most likely include imprisonment.
However, Peter Obi is very astute to make such a careless speech. May the soul of MKO Abiola RIP. Amen!

I don’t think it was a wrong decision for him to come back to claim what rightfully belongs to him or say anything about the military government… it was just unfortunate that he died and couldn’t get the Presidency.
He was the man of the people.
    And he was a Hero.
    Wasn’t a coward.
Don’t get it wrong, my fellow Nigerians.

    But
Even though I was very small boy but thank God for you to bring this up in the course of work and I believe lesson has been learned from has happened between two of them and I believe it'll not happen again because the look of things, they way things are going presently as we go into 2023 general election for presidential and national Assemblies ones with the situation of Naira redesign to ensure our principal JAGABAN ONE OF AFRICAN couldn't win. I hope and pray 🙏🙏 we should wise 🙏🙏 up to know the right thing for us so that we could face the same problem now and after election.

He was stupid. Democracy was always gonna come , he should have played a long game. He was as corrupt as Abacha and IBB, he financed their coups, partly the reason they never wanted him to win presidency. They knew he was very corrupt to the last. He was a religious bigot as well. The annulment and arrests, were just friends dealing with each other.
