Hello Michele Phan, I remember when I was 16 or 17 yrs old , I always watch your make up video. I save it to my laptop your video so I can watch it many times . Because of you I inspired to do make up on my self. I remember that time I always ask my mom buy me some make up and try to my self while watching your video 😂. Now I’m already 26 and suddenly remember those memories, despite of many make up bloggers rise in UA-cam. I just want to say to you that your the only best I watch ever. You make my teen life happier ❤️🫰🏻
She is wearing French braids, not cornrows. She is not appropriating any culture. I could see if she was wearing cornrows or box braids but she's wearing basic pig tails. Chill out guys it's just a makeup tutorial
All braided styles originated in Africa. But I didn't even think of her having braiding hair as cultural appropriation. It really didn't stand out to me that her was braided until I came to read the comments.
+Lexus Locke It can't be proven that all braids came from Africa. In China it was normal (after the Mongols took over) for the men to wear a long simple braid in their hair. In many European countries braids were worn as a simple hairstyle that many women wore. For Native Americans braids were worn as a way to keep the hair out if the face, and also as a way to show the length of their hair. Braids are a multi-cultural hairstyle it's just certain types that people attribute to native African culture.
There are some things that are cultural appropriation, like wearing a native american headress or a bindi. But im pretty sure wearing braids and a nude matte lip isnt culturally appropriating.
+S Kamble a friend of mine is not an indian, but (her family) had a celebration and wore this beautiful indian traditional clothes and had bindis on but they had no intentions to disrespect indians, instead they love and respect them, but does it count as cultural appropriation?
+Michelle Phan aren't you guys sisters if you don't know who I'm talking to it would be promise phan and Michelle phan (plus)I have been watching you guys for 3 years
people want to talk about cultural appropriation while wearing 15,000 bundles of Brazilian, Malaysian, Filipino, Armenia hair. STOP IT. Fact is, we are all inspired by other races and we ALL "steal" things from other races. Hush up and be flattered! other people think what you're doing is cool. I'm sure we have more important things to worry about smh ... oh and btw (like it matters) I'm black :)
I dont see the cultural appropriation? I can understand if it were cornrows or dreads but these are dutch braids, or a different version of french braids. French braids originated from Greek and Celtic culture. I know this video was called lowkey baddie but why are people upset about it? Dutch braids and cornrows are both variations of the french braid. Cornrows are defined to be braids tightly wound around the scalp, and in multiple separate braids, which Michelle clearly doesn't have. So why is this video getting so much hate?
I think because this was an older video and people weren't appropriating certain styles as much as they do now. Therfor, she got more shit for it. And I agree, they weren't even cornrows
omg cultures ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE wear braids, so unless its specifically locs or dreads, you cant really call this cultural appropriation. really loved this vid mish, its so so simple and can be worn day to day or even dressed up
Even with dreads, the sadu and sages in India have been wearing them for thousands of years. It's a shame that a woman of color cannot appreciate braids, just because she is a fairer woman of color :-/
+Nina I agree. It's so irritating that everything nowadays has to be racist or controversial... there's nothing wrong with wearing braids or doing urban makeup.
+Hi bye Lmaooo braids have been around for thousands of years, even in North-Eastern European cultures. If you're talking about micro braids, then yeah, I agree, but the type of braids she wears in this video are actually Dutch/French braids.
+nsyakinah Agree! i'm mixed race, so i don't specifically know if that 'counts' but I'm pretty sure me wearing braids to bed so my hair doesn't get tangled isn't cultural appropriation lmao
Tbh, Michelle Phan is better at makeup tutorials than all the other beauty gurus on Instagram and some on youtube. Beauty gurus nowadays are putting too much makeup on. And by that I mean like too much foundation or too much concealer. Like chill! Just like what Michelle said. "A little goes a long way." I'm sure there are other gurus that don't use too much makeup either but I happen to notice Michelle very often. I've always been a viewer of Michelle fan since I was in the 6th grade. I'm now going into my junior year of high school and I still love to watch her videos. But it's occasionally because of course, I've been real busy with school and hanging out with friends.
Seriously though, I feel like all the artists are focused on doing glam looks, and they aren't always the most "going to the corner shop" kind of makeup. Though I do Wichita she would come out with content more, I do this her videos have better content
It's really just preference. I don't think she's any better than other makeup gurus who "wear too much makeup" (I think they look just fine). Like you can safely have that opinion and I do appreciate Michelle for making such a simple and easy-to-follow tutorial but there was really no need to bring up other makeup artists who love their art as well into this
Her and Lisa Eldridge are the best gurus on YT in my opinion, they give more than simply just makeup and looking good-they're educational and that to me is a guru.
You don't need to be rich don't listen to that other comment. Eat healthier, drink a lot of water and start taking steps to taking better care of your skin.
You will always be one of my favorite UA-camrs ❤️ you are the reason I started my UA-cam channel 5 years ago! I've watched you ever since you started ❤️
+Moe Manzanares it wasn't really about the hairstyle, it was about the whole "lowkey baddie" thing. using AAVE (tied in with a bronzed makeup look completed with styled baby hairs) as an 'aesthetic' is kinda offensive.
right, this is for people who go on about a little thing called 'cultural appropriation'. Culture is something that should be shared between one another and was what, in the past, brought many different groups together. If we do not share our different cultures and ideas together, we will eventually become divided and, instead of appreciating the beauty of someone's culture, we will fear it. We should live in a place where ideas of beauty and love are shared as it will brighten up our world. For anyone reading this, you are beautiful - your culture does not change that.
+Justin Rollins I indeed have watched the video and the first time I watched it I said the words "wait, so I'm not allowed to wear cornrows because I don't know where they generated from?" I think that's stupid. She states one phase in particular that I find extremely interesting; "but it's deemed funny or cool, when the privileged take it for them selves". There's so many privileged people in this world white AND black and of all cultures for that matter. That's like saying, "oh you're black but you're privileged, you're not allowed to wear cornrows then". There's probably plenty of black people who have no idea about the significance of "black hairstyles" but where them because, like most people, they saw them in a hip hop video or thought they looked pretty cool. Anyway we all have our different opinions on cultural appropriation:) x
I think there is nothing wrong with appropriation. I don't think it is inappropriate to wear for example kimono in Europe. I don't think that using features of some traditional clothing of some country is wrong. How does that make any harm? Another thing is that most of people here are talking about 'black people culture', I've never heard of race cultures. Stop being obsessive about your skin colours. This way you actually make barriers between different races, while we are all human beings and colour is just colour.
I tried this look and I kid you not, its as if i transformed. I got SO many compliments compared to when i do a heavy makeup tutorial with harsh contour/highlight/dramatic eyes. Honestly Michelle is OG of makeup hope she makes a comeback with more of her magic!!!
Why everyone say that is a culture appropriation ? If it is, what's the problem ? I mean, we can't make braids because we are not black ? We can't do a cosplay because we are not Japanese ? We can't wear a béret because we are not French ? We can't dance zumba because we are not latinos ? Just, what's wrong with you ?? Be open to over cultures is not criminal. We should stop doing discrimination. We should go everywhere around the world, share our cultures with others. This is not a culture appropriation, this is a culture sharing.
+yumika43 I don't think people are suggesting she doesn't adopt the look - as always people miss the point that cultural appropriation is about acknowledgement. People aren't going to deny that berets are French but everyone is quick to dismiss the Black influence of this style despite using slang that Black people created.
+yumika43 it's giving credit where credit is due. You shouldn't use slang and braids and imply that the look is "baddie" and then completely dismiss that you borrowed an African American term that is used widely right now...people are always borrowing and copying trends and cultures, but for some reason people borrow from black culture and never give credit or proper respect
+StyledeCandy What have gangsters got to do with cultural appropriation. You sound like one of those ignorant racists who think gangsters all look like Snoop Dogg. Last time I checked the Italians, Chinese, Russians, Mexicans etc. also have gangs down to a T but none of them have that dragged up when referring to their culture. Get an education.
y'all annoying bout "this is culture appropriation." Indians been braiding their hair for a long ass time too, and don't even think about saying indians copied y'all.
no one says this shit in Toronto. Black girls swear they're coolie, and we say nothing. It's not fuckin culture appropriation, it's acceptance and appreciation.
+T Noor From my understanding, the braid isn't the only issue? And yes, of course other races braid their hair, but black people are known for their intricate braiding techniques. When someone mentions "braids", people tend to think about black hairstyles (cornrows, box braids, etc), not about Indians, lol. That's the reality.
+Arienhn so what if she has two dutch braids in? LIke i'm honestly confused. Maybe because it's because i live in a more diverse area, but ALL cultures borrow from each other, including blacks. And she's asian, she can't really APPROPRIATE culture, she's apart of another minority.
+Oana by Asian, i am referring to those from the east asian countries, such as China, Japan, etc. They ARE a minority in the US. I never said white people rule the world... My point here is that Michelle cannot "appropriate" black culture lol
+Oana The whole thought of culture appropriation is that you are "appropriating" ie., making something seem right when it was considered wrong before. People claim that when Kylie wore those cornrows in her hair, she was appropriating black culture because cornrows were then seen as a fashion statement, when they were considered ratchet before. (I wouldn't know of this bc where i live, they were never seen as ratchet). In other words, It's been said by people that only whites can "appropriate culture" in America because they are the only ones that truly have a say. No one would change their minds about cornrows if Kylie didn't have them in. I'm just running with that thought. With this logic people are putting out, it is impossible that Michelle could be APPROPRIATING anything. Honestly, i don't even really believe in culture appropriation. I was raised in a multicultural environment, everything is cool to me.
If you think braids are cultural appropriation, you obviously have no true knowledge of what it means to appropriate something, rather than appreciate a hairstyle.
Thank you! If Michelle showed up in traditional African clothing, such as a dashiki, a turban, or a head wrap, or decided to plait her head in box braids or Bantu knots, I would understand (and be part of) the dissent. However, she is simply creating a look based on popular culture. I can vouch to seeing people of Asian, Arab, African, and Latin descent withe the same look on Twitter, being lauded for their "ethnic" beauty when they are merely creating a look based on modern trends. I also think people forget that Michelle is also a woman of color.
as a half Asian, I totally understand Michelle 💜 I grew up in an extremely diverse community where everyone would look different but give and take from other cultures. it's the beauty in beauty! 💕
+Colleen White oh so now its beauty???? but when blacks had big lips, big bum n braids they were called ghetto..its only becomes '''beautiful''' when a non-black person wears it
Colleen White it hate it coz blacks have been dehumanised for many centuries for having those beautiful features n doing braids on their heads but as soon as a white person wears it, it automatically becomes beautiful.. i hate how society works
I'm black and I can't see anything wrong with this video. French braids? Seriously? She's not wearing dreads or box braids or cornrows. French braids aren't necessarily very African, a lot of European cultures having been doing this for YEAAARS. And her baby hairs weren't geled down like we do them, ppl with straighter hair textures tend to have baby hairs that naturally lay or wave
+Jessica Sebastião exactly! Thank you finally someone who sees reason. All I see is a bunch of people complaining about a non existent problem. Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Latinos, Indians, etc have been using intricate braid hairstyles for THOUSANDS of years. It is not exclusive for black people.
+Ang L I know right! Africa is well known for a lot of hairstyles, and yes a lot of braiding styles originated there. But not all of them, we don't OWN braids. Some people are just angry and make a fuss over nothing
I have no problem with cultural sharing. In fact, I commend it & wish it would happen more! I love seeing people of different cultures trying new things :D However, I do not like it when one race is bashed & made fun of for having a certain look, but when done by another race it is seen as hip. Needless to say, it is important that we love, share, & be happy. Our world will be a better place if we just learn these few things...
+J-Hope wants that ass im allowed to defend her if you don't like it find a different video to watch. if you can't tell by my channel name it is what i do
+J-Hope wants that ass no need to cuss or rude if you had a statement for more then me then don't reply to my comment personally and make your own comment thank you
I bet she could talk about horrific pain of childbirth while trying to convice me to have kids (in 90 years) and I would go for it because her voice would make it sound so amazing.
I really like this look because it's simple and you can actually try it out. most makeup looks are getting a bit weird. of course it depends on what look you like the best, heavy or light, crazy or simple, I won't judge. but for me I HATE the makeup trends these days. Too much weird liquid lipstick colors, bake bake bake face.. It's really not my type. I wish people now stop caking their faces to make themselves "unique" but I'd rather want a look thats more of enhancing(?) their natural beauty instead of a crazy-ish trendy look. But if you like those looks then good for you! But nowadays as I just said, I wish people could stop trying to get attention with the weirdest colors they could find and blab it all their faces and people being like "SLAYY OMG LOVE THAT LOOKKK". I mean I dont care if you like it but i get a feeling they don't but just trying to.. meh its just my opinion. But anyways... Love the look!:)
MAYO nah I feel you that's why I lie Korean makeup not that everyone else's is a problem but I'm just saying it's chilled and calm not to much blah cake
I agree makeup should enhance what you have! Heavy contouring doesn't make sense for a normal person and gray/ black lipsticks is getting to Halloween 💀.
and you can do it too!! :) do exercise, eat healthy, drink water, and put mask and moisturiser everyday! your skin will bright if you show some Love to it!! 😘 😘
+Little Demon skin type is genetic. You can do the best thing for your skin but if you are prone to acne and oils, it's hard to keep a clean canvas all the time. Not that easy
+friangle this is so true. I do everything "right" as far as skin care goes, as well as guzzling water and sleeping like 9 hours a night and my skin just looks awful. I have acne, dark circles and lots of redness and it won't go away no matter what.
+Nikki Sharpe It's all about what you eat!! You might be allergic to something you eat daily and that can cause acne. A lot of people don't know it and buy expensive skincare products. You have to know where it comes from. Could be dairy products, lots of people are intolerant and don't know it because it only reflects on their skin. Acne is not an illness, it's your body telling you that you're eating something you shouldn't be eating.
@@MichellePhan I always love your video Michelle ♥It has been 10 years that I'm enjoying your video! It's how amazing that you keep growing and transform over the years (I'm still follow your instagram closely) I have give myself to name as Michelle since 10years ago because I hopes can feel the beauty bringing by you, also the inner strength and physical beauty !♥ hopes you will keep your inner beauty forever and share to fans ! Cheers
Browns and greens are called earth tones in the color world; and there's warm and cool tones to every color. So like, a warm earth tone would be like a brown that has a red tint to it...like a reddish brown. A cool tone would generally tend to be more on the blue/purple tone side. But it is funny...it'd be so much easier to say use a brown and then point to one so we can get a color idea.
I love this look! and as for this being a race thing, im mexican american okay my mother is from mexico and my great grandparents are from spain. But i do not get mad or upset when i see a make up artist post a tutorial saying "hot firey spanish make up and hair" or how around halloween when everyone posts dios de los muertos sugar skulls. Its not hurting anyone and hell it taught me how to do that look better! so leave michelle alone!! she is a sweet loving and caring gentle soul and it makes me sick how people would even think that of her!! Michelle of you see this just know you are loved and i would personally love if you would do a spanish look and title it hot spanish something something idk lol
+Alejandra Rodriguez couldn't have said it better! We should celebrate cultures and races from around the world and be free to embrace them! If someone takes inspiration and beauty from a certain culture why is it so frowned apon? I'd understand if people were genuinely making fun out of it or something but that's not the case most of the time! Loved your comment!
Okay honey but thats you. Just because you personally dont get offended by something doesnt mean everyone should follow suit and not be offended. Also as you said your mexican. Do you hear people putting down latino women calling them ugly, and ghetto for their culture? No right your actually glorified and seen as a exotic beauty while black girls specifically af american girls are seen as those negative things. We are even fired from jobs and suspended from school because we wear our natural hair and style such as braids. So of course we will be a little salty when you guys can turn around and wear the same things as us thats apart of our culture but be seen as "urban" and "cool." Plus jus like you said above you and your people get credit when someone does a look inspired by your culture but when it comes to african americans we dont get credit I mean look at the people saying its a "dutch" braid when obvi her goal was to look urban "black"
+arianna dandridge Michelle did not and will never mean any harm. In your life maybe there are bad situations but it's not like that around the world. If Michelle decides to make a whole video showing the beauty of your culture, take it and feel beautiful as you should feel everyday. That's all. Maybe the title offended you but the concept of the video and the context of it is much more important. And there is nothing wrong with it. Just be the best you can be and let yourself open up to the beauty of your culture that Michelle and many more other people actually treasure.
+Nekomon First of all I never said she was trying cause harm. So stop putting words in my mouth and secondly thats the problem she doesnt say african american inspired to give credit to african americans she just put "lowkey baddie" and "cashmere kitty".So i will be offended by that because if she and others can say a video is middle eastern inspired, or spanish inspired than they can do the same for african americans
People are calling these dutch braids appropriative, and I'm not trying to make light of cultural appropriation. But these are Dutch braids. DUTCH braids. They are literally called DUTCH braids. My mom is white as hell and she used to wear them to school every day as a kid in the 50s. This particular style is not a hairstyle any one culture has any particular claim on.
@@liz8778 Yeah, but does this mean that only Dutch people can wear this hairstyle? Just like how only Romanian people can dress as Dracula? Well, everybody who is saying to those 5-10 people who talked about cultural appropriation to stop because it is not cultural appropriation just take this too seriously lol
@@meefofknaifuz1575 well no ofc not...everyone who wants to wear those braids can wear them imo...I was just pointing out that they apparently come from the Dutch so they could claim it as part of their culture...but that doesn't mean no one else from another culture or something can't wear them. It's just important to know where things come from i guess but to claim things as your own (like a hairstyle in this case) and let no one else wear it is a bit ridiculous imo
Even though you don't upload much, you're still the only one that still teaches me new things. Who would have thought a purple blush looks so natural?? Your so original and crearive. Hope you get more make up tutorials up ❤️❤️
Michelle isn't wearing cornrows. But if she were and any black person felt like it was cultural appropriation, they're entitled to their opinion. Non-black individuals have no influence over black feelings. Braids originated in Africa, Nubia to be more specific and were also associated with Social class and societal roles. And black people today don't wear braids for fashion like white people do, it's to protect our hair and retain length. The more you know.
Loads of different countries and cultures include braids in their culture. And they're all beautiful. So people wearing them now in the present, can't we just appreciate how they are fierce and love all of them no matter where they originate?
+Eiko M I'm Mexican and Mexicans have been wearing braids long before African people were brought to the western continents. They were definitely not influenced by African culture. I bet if you were to go to a remote mountain in China you'd find girls with braids in their hair, would you still try to act so offended? Vikings and Celts wore their hair in dreds for thousands of years, but now that too is just for black people? Makes no sense.
i respect michelle so much, shes a great role model for women...basically the pioneer of this youtube beauty guru phenomenon AND she didnt take her success for granted, instead took major risks with her money and invested it all for her business...shes now beyond just a internet star but a business mogul which majority of people cant achieve...shes a living proof that you can love makeup AND be a smart badass, and that just because you like taking care of your appearance doesnt mean you're some sort of ditzy brainless chick
Im arabic and before my great grandma was born, people were braiding their hair every single day AND ITS NOT RACISM AND IF MY BRAID OFFEND U THEN HAHAHA IDC
idiots. certain braids, like what black people put in, are meant for their hair type and their culture. when another person of another race uses it, its cultural appropriation. of all people you should know this, being Arabian.
+Pavithran Pavithran these aren't corn rows or dreads though? That's the thing...idk why ppl are giving her shit for this when plenty other people of every color braid their hair just the same?
No no no no no. Unless the person claims that part of the culture as their own, it is most definitely NOT cultural appropriation. It is cultural appreciation. If they're wearing the hairstyle and not claiming it as their own at all, then they most likely have done the research and know what it means to that culture. That, or they just like the hairstyle and it gives them confidence. Why do people these days try to censor everything for everyone else instead of trying to share their culture because they're proud of it? I don't understand. Before you say I'm fully white and have no culture, I am both Irish and Native American so think before you speak.
Rachel Novak Totally agree . I’m Irish as well ( mixed with other cultures- German, Welsh, Anglo Saxon and Viking ) my ancient Celtic ancestors were probably doing awesome looking Celtic braids - I wish I could do them . I’m still trying to figure it out !!
There is something special about this look.. idk what it is but its definitely my favourite one ever. It's so simple but so.. i dont know, mysterious or something like that. I absolutely adore it.
I think Mich looks absolutely stunning and so would anyone else with this look! Black, white, purple, it doesn't matter your race. we live in a society where everyone takes offense to everything when in reality it's shouldn't be offensive at all! Do black ladies get hate when they do a "white girl" hair, make up, and outfit look? no! fashion is supposed to be universal, it shouldn't be that just because Michelle isn't black she can't wear her hair in braids or wear dark lipstick. We all need to learn how to embrace each other instead of bashing one another for wearing make up and doing out hair.
Well, it's not that simple. There's going to be people who cry "cultural appropriation". I do agree with you, but the fact is, people will find things to hate, regardless of what you say.
+Ha Delihya Its not about not sharing culture. We love to share it. It's the fact that people wear it as a fashion statement. You're probably wondering how that's a problem? Well the reason why is back in the days we were called things such as ghetto or even denied jobs for wearing these hairstyles because they looked unprofessional , but when a white person wears them it's "high-fashion" and "fashionable".
people should invest in making their skin underneath as healthy and beautiful as possible instead of masking it to look beautiful. I used to have HORRIBLE skin but now I only have one or two blemishes occasionally. I finally took the step to CONSISTENTLY take care of my skin (and to be patient, because it takes time). And it was so so so worth it. I'm still maintaining it and am still pushing forward in my clear skin journey (: and you can too!
+Jade Martell Hey beautiful please SUBSCRIBE to my new beauty channel and watch my new video! Also I will be giving away an ipad mini to the 100th subbie!
Soo, I'm white.. I have baby hairs... I like to wear a Dutch braid because it gets my hair out of my face... So, I'm now I a racist? What? That does not make any sense..
Girl don't listen to anyone here lol. I use to wear braids a lot just to get my long ass hair out of the way lol. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm Asian and my baby hairs are straight but they stick up a lot, like A LOT, so once in a while I do need to put them down because it's extremely bothersome for me when I have a ponytail or whatnot.
***** I don't understand the whole concept of cultural appropriation honestly, I tried really hard to understand, for reals, but I can't. I'm not american so maybe that's why. For me it's really dumb, but that's just my oppinion.
+Sheldon Cooper This was a while ago, and I don't know if you can see them anymore, but there definitely were a lot of people saying that her wearing dutch braids were hurting their feelings because they (might have) mistaken the braids for cornrows. Please for the love of God, stop being rude to random people just because you might not be able to find the comments I was talking about.
It's the whole look put together and the fact that it was titled "lowkey baddie." Smoothing out baby hairs and purposely framing the face with them with that hair style and makeup and the words "lowkey" and "baddie" are apart of Black culture. Culture is not a single thing or style, it's a combination of styles, manners, and values a particular group of people practice.
+Briana A it severely bothers me that people are ok with basically saying "only black people can dress like this/talk like this/ wear this hairstyle". How does that not seem wrong? She isn't wearing it in a degrading way. She isn't saying "I am trying to be black" or acting that way in the slightest. People need to calm down.
are you serious? most people have baby hairs. it's the act of styling them deliberately that is common in black and Latinx cultures. for years they've generally been seen as "ghetto", but suddenly its become a new trend that doesn't give credit to its originators.
+Brittany Smoot +Brittany Smoot Ok. I totally understand what your saying. And although I personally am labeling this as "appropriation," like many other people, I can not speak for everyone else. My problem with this video is that it's like Michelle, and many other people, do not give credit when inspired by Black culture and that takes away the knowledge of how Black people contribute to the beauty community and it's deprives people of knowing black culture. I've seen so many videos on UA-cam about "Arab makeup", Korean beauty trends, etc. I'm not saying those kinds of videos correctly represent those cultures but they do give credit. When credit is given where credit is due people can see how different cultures contribute to their style. I think that's important because everyone of every culture, ethnicity, race, etc has so many great elements and giving credit is just a simple way to show a little respect.
It's really sad how some people react to a simple movement or style choice. The fact that she had her hair in FRENCH braids and used the words 'low-key baddy', and was judged is very sad. If people make comments before looking into the subject and are blinded by their own pride, they end up looking stupid. And even if she was copying a certain culture, those people should take it as a compliment. They should not go after her with rude names, and false accusations. Michelle looked gorgeous in this video (as she always does), and I hope that the ignorant comments of some people didn't make her change the title. She should be able to express herself in any way she wishes without being ridiculed.
I don't know how its cultural appropriation against black culture when originally mostly latina women wore this style, especially in the 90s.People use to refer tgem as chulas I think.
Sam LSD "You are probably some dumb black american who never left the ghetto."......so you proceed to attempt to fight against cultural appropriation yet make a racist and stereotypical comment about me simply based on my views.....interesting.
+Sam LSD I lived in the Bronx, I am Hispanic(from the Caribbean with African and European heritage) and I witnessed more Hispanic women wearing this hairstyle than black women. I do not think that this hairstyle has specific origin to a race or group of people.
i miss her so much...i miss when she was the top beauty youtuber...not full of drama...just kind michelle who just showed us how to look and feel pretty...
I love that lipstick and everything, but... This whole video felt like an ad. This is the first video I've watched of hers in years and it doesn't feel authentic. The editing and film quality are amazing, great tips, but who has the money for all of this stuff?
Hahaha i think its pretty funny how i read a positive comment that is against all the negative ones and after that i really just wanna read a negative one but when i scroll down i only see positive ones n ill be like ohh cmon why all the positive cover up the negative already
Her voice is so like.. mother nature.. haha its so weird but yet satisfying lol
Kate Zarate then you might want to listen to asmr or specifically gentlewhispering
No she has a lovely voice that doesn't mean i wanna hear people whisper weird shit in my ear lol. She just has a soft, lush voice. it's so serene
Kate Zarate I thought it was only me, I love watching her videos for that reason..they are so calming lol I hope she comes back too ❤
Aphro first of all i wasnt talking to you and second of all i just gave a suggestion it's clearly written MIGHT... so yeahh back off

She is wearing French braids, not cornrows. She is not appropriating any culture. I could see if she was wearing cornrows or box braids but she's wearing basic pig tails. Chill out guys it's just a makeup tutorial
Learn the difference between appropriation and appreciation
She didn't mean that she has cornrows in this video 😂 read what she wrote again because I think you read it wrong..
agree
I think people were upset about the use of AAVE and styling the baby hairs, plus apparently she darkened her skin in a picture on instagram.
RePoa21 Chill. He didn't even say anything wrong. Your reading comprehension is way off.
+RePoa21 Cause you're going off on someone that wasn't even rude...
+S Kamble a friend of mine is not an indian, but (her family) had a celebration and wore this beautiful indian traditional clothes and had bindis on but they had no intentions to disrespect indians, instead they love and respect them, but does it count as cultural appropriation?
+S Kamble actually braids are cultural appropriation
I could listen to you talk all day Michelle it's so soothing lol

+♡ Ashley Dawn ♡ hi
Yas
??
people want to talk about cultural appropriation while wearing 15,000 bundles of Brazilian, Malaysian, Filipino, Armenia hair. STOP IT. Fact is, we are all inspired by other races and we ALL "steal" things from other races. Hush up and be flattered! other people think what you're doing is cool. I'm sure we have more important things to worry about smh ... oh and btw (like it matters) I'm black :)
Agree 100%
lol wearing hair extensions or straightening/dying hair has nothing to do with cultural appropriation. you tried though
honey.... wearing weave is not culture appropriation 🙄 lmao
+iluvpinkandgold Thanks girl! The whole term is a joke!
+iluvpinkandgold Everything is borrowed from nature, if anything, we should be crediting nature for being so amazing.
Why in the world is a hairstyle considered cultural appropriation in the first place
I think because this was an older video and people weren't appropriating certain styles as much as they do now. Therfor, she got more shit for it. And I agree, they weren't even cornrows
Meagan Alexander idk people are stupid
omg cultures ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE wear braids, so unless its specifically locs or dreads, you cant really call this cultural appropriation.
really loved this vid mish, its so so simple and can be worn day to day or even dressed up
Even with dreads, the sadu and sages in India have been wearing them for thousands of years.
It's a shame that a woman of color cannot appreciate braids, just because she is a fairer woman of color :-/
yeah. people who argued about this racism thing forgot about indians. That means they're racist too...IDIOTS
I wish this included a hair tutorial :(
White girls can't wear corn rows unless you want to be a cultural appropriator.
they're Dutch braids! you can look up lots of tutorials, they're like reverse French braids :)
+Sophie Jacqueline i think they are dutch braids so you can try looking that up :)
They're Dutch braids not cornrows
+CACA0 he's saying that some white girls don't suit conrows PS I know they are Dutch braids
Is it weird that I watch this video at least once a month
Ana Bianca same girl
Ana Bianca nope so do i
Noopppe I do it too. But it’s not once a month is more Like 5.
Ana Bianca that’s very specific
I know. I keep coming back on this video.
"A little goes a long way."
I'm sure there are other gurus that don't use too much makeup either but I happen to notice Michelle very often.
She's really not
It's really just preference.
+The Legend Of Bella Same ! BTW I love Lisa

i agree. people are soo extra.
what was the previous title?
+LPS Lover "lowkey baddie"
emm oh yeah thanks, people are so sensitive nowadays there is nothing wrong with that title
Anya Lee people need to be less sensitive, she clearly wasn't trying to offend anyone, geez

This video went from "lowkey BADDIE" to "lowkey baddie" to "CASHMERE KITTY =^ • + • ^="
+Richa Patranabis hahahaha IKR?
+Michelle Phan Why change it? Either way, great tutorial as always!!
Nicasmitten ϟ Super true!
+Nicasmitten ϟ (nicasmitten) some ppl were angry because of the cornrows that apparently only dark ppl are allowed to have or smth haha
+Georgie Roberts you're reading my mind!
+Justin Rollins The problem here is that so many people don't know the difference between appropriation and appreciation.
Emila Banaszek couldn't agree more:) x
+erinam10 Nailed. It. Taking aspects of Black culture and whitewashing it is what America does best.
+yumika43 This is such an amazing point of view, you are so right, you could have not said it in a better way!
y'all annoying bout "this is culture appropriation." Indians been braiding their hair for a long ass time too, and don't even think about saying indians copied y'all.
no one says this shit in Toronto.
I was raised in a multicultural environment, everything is cool to me.
ugh shes so pretty! Her voice is sooo soothing, i could listen to her all day
+Sasha Kiselev i love for the ending of the video
her voice is soooo soothing omg

+Çağla Turgut you should search ASMR, my favourite asmrtist is whispers unicorn!!!
Matilde Pinto I like her too!
bckground song anyone???
+Kat N Exactly! And if anything was if she was bashing Africans yet wearing no their clothes and style, that would be appropriating
SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE BACK
its not about appropriation, to me its on how the video was titled
+Opopanax what about it being lowkey baddie? Whether black people came up with the words or not it was never cultural
Michelle cant really be a baddie tbh, shes too cute for that
+Mariah Staceyy It's true 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

+Linh Luu I bite my lip when I'm stressed out or concentrating 😢
Michelle Phan me to
I love this sailor moon eyeliner 3:05 this is just amazing!
as a half Asian, I totally understand Michelle 💜 I grew up in an extremely diverse community where everyone would look different but give and take from other cultures. it's the beauty in beauty! 💕
not that it matters 🤓
Agree completely. Half Asian and grew up around nothing but blacks. I swear black people judge themselves more than anyone else in the world sometimes
+Colleen White oh so now its beauty???? but when blacks had big lips, big bum n braids they were called ghetto..its only becomes '''beautiful''' when a non-black person wears it
+daric nd lol come on now. it's 2016... I'm sorry you feel that way however, I believe that everyone is beautiful in their own way.
Colleen White it hate it coz blacks have been dehumanised for many centuries for having those beautiful features n doing braids on their heads but as soon as a white person wears it, it automatically becomes beautiful.. i hate how society works
I am so in love with this look and gosh your nails
IKR
I can’t get enough of those nails omg
Regardless of the type of hairstyle no one should be penalized for trying new hairstyles...
Finally we have smart people in the comment section 😂
👏👏👏
I'll take Michelle Phan over Carli bybel any day
I have no problem with cultural sharing.
+leluna Why can't cultures collide? We're sharing what we do in each of our cultures.
Yes! We are all on one world and we should be culture sharing! I understand if it's a sacred thing, but other than that I think it should be fine
Agree!
true!
***** You COMPLETELY missed my point...
any race can wear any hairstyle. it's hair.
+J-Hope wants that ass im allowed to defend her if you don't like it find a different video to watch. if you can't tell by my channel name it is what i do
+J-Hope wants that ass no need to cuss or rude if you had a statement for more then me then don't reply to my comment personally and make your own comment thank you
+J-Hope wants that ass Armys everywhere xD
KookieMonster hey lol
ikr
I bet she could talk about horrific pain of childbirth while trying to convice me to have kids (in 90 years) and I would go for it because her voice would make it sound so amazing.
Not in a creepy way, she just has a really soft soothing voice
Love the look!:)
and yes, I do know that Michelle also does colorful makeup looks. But I'm just telling my opinion on only this look!
MAYO nah I feel you that's why I lie Korean makeup not that everyone else's is a problem but I'm just saying it's chilled and calm not to much blah cake
Philharmony glad that you agree btw my daily makeup is just literally the korean makeup style😂
I agree makeup should enhance what you have! Heavy contouring doesn't make sense for a normal person and gray/ black lipsticks is getting to Halloween 💀.
choco_coco167 trueee!! happy that you agree:DD
do the 12 Zodiacs looks Michelle, or 12 Chinese Zodiacs looks good be cool too
She did do some Zodiac inspired festival looks.
Love this look on you!
+azealia divine Thank you 😍
I can't believe how beautiful she is... is she even real... how can a human being be this beautiful...
2019 and her makeup is still up to date...her makeup was so advanced!!
I love how she only wears what she needs so instead of caking on foundation when she doesn't need it she use a bit of concealer
and you can do it too!!
+MLK yeah I guess my vegetarian diet that contains no dairy and little sugar must be killing my skin.
This look is stunning!
And that double plait is awesome!
+Ami Yamato your turn to try! ❤
Cheers
I love how she describes eyeshadow "warm earth tone"
I'm like "you mean brown?"
+morgan williams ayyyy willam tho
+morgan williams
Im doing a giveaway on my channel, where I give away the Tarte Pallete Michelle used in this video, go enter :p
nah it's like an orangey brown color
Who else loves her voice? Is like her voice is so soothing.

Love this look :)!
ITS WENGIE
+Wengie you would murder in this look! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
HELLO WENGIE
I love you so much omg 💞💞
Yooo girl
I was born in Mexico and I completely agree I don't even know what people are getting worked up about
+Alejandra Rodriguez couldn't have said it better!
So stop putting words in my mouth and secondly thats the problem she doesnt say african american inspired to give credit to african americans she just put "lowkey baddie" and "cashmere kitty".So i will be offended by that because if she and others can say a video is middle eastern inspired, or spanish inspired than they can do the same for african americans
wow she's so pretty and beautiful!
Your editing is seriously amazing! and those lashes look really nice and natural.
AHHH AMAZING AS ALWAYS!!!! YOUR EDITING SKILLS SLAYYY!!!!
love you!!! you look great michelle!
April Jones so why are they called dutch braids then...obviously they come from the dutch people -_-
@@liz8778 Yeah, but does this mean that only Dutch people can wear this hairstyle?
@@liz8778 Sorry for this late-ass reply, but true. 😂

This has been my comfort makeup tutorial to watch since I was 13. I’m 20 now. I’m single handed it responsible for at least 1/3 of the views
Not Nubia, but Egypt, it originated from Nubian culture.
Native Americans also wore braids, it was a part of their culture and belief.
wearing braids are part of many different cultures, and also nobody knows where braids originated from, but French braids did originate from Africa.
I'm blasian and all her looks suit my rounder face, similar nose, and small eyes so well! Thanks Michelle
Is it weird this is my favorite makeup tutorial you've ever done? It is just so simple and pretty! Love you Mish! 💕💕
Im arabic and before my great grandma was born, people were braiding their hair every single day AND ITS NOT RACISM AND IF MY BRAID OFFEND U THEN HAHAHA IDC
Braiding literally exists in tons of cultures idk why these people complain about cultural appropriation like it's so extra.
idiots. certain braids, like what black people put in, are meant for their hair type and their culture. when another person of another race uses it, its cultural appropriation. of all people you should know this, being Arabian.
The quality of your videos are so good. Almost to the level of cinematography. Love you Mish ! Keep going !
She has SO MUCH class and grace. A lot of beauty gurus don't have that
Couldn't agree more. She is the one that I consider to follow, though I'm not a fan of makeup
+Se Chan it's hating because they're calling it as they see it? gotcha.
+Taylor C not what I meant. People will find anything to hate on. Calling it for what it is is another story. Point is, people are bitchy.
+Tropical boston Except those are French/Dutch braids.
first step: have clear ass skin
people should invest in making their skin underneath as healthy and beautiful as possible instead of masking it to look beautiful.
I don't often do my makeup as it is time consuming, but when I do, you are how I learned I the first place. Thanks!!

+isabella neergaard girl you can wear a hamster in your head, it doesn't matter. People are spending to much time on tumblr.
***** I don't understand the whole concept of cultural appropriation honestly, I tried really hard to understand, for reals, but I can't. I'm not american so maybe that's why. For me it's really dumb, but that's just my oppinion.
+isabella neergaard But... nobody said "she is racist for wearing braids." You're merely pulling that out of your ass.
After reading some comments, I'm left sitting here wondering why I'm not allowed to have baby hairs because I'm white. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Should we just like... cut our baby hairs off?
Damn, I remember the days when I used to sit an watch Michelle's videos for hours on end. I miss her so much.
This video is so satisfying i always watch this when i want to relax lol her voice and the way she just softly put on her make up its just satisfying
You are so right.
thumbs up :)
preachhhh
Sam LSD "You are probably some dumb black american who never left the ghetto."......so you proceed to attempt to fight against cultural appropriation yet make a racist and stereotypical comment about me simply based on my views.....interesting.
+Sam LSD
I lived in the Bronx, I am Hispanic(from the Caribbean with African and European heritage) and I witnessed more Hispanic women wearing this hairstyle than black women.
I do not think that this hairstyle has specific origin to a race or group of people.
i miss her so much...i miss when she was the top beauty youtuber...not full of drama...just kind michelle who just showed us how to look and feel pretty...
It's amazing how flawless your skin is. You didn't even put on foundation. I'm in awe.
Its 12:01... January 22, 2017..... Exactly a year since she uploaded a makeup tutorial.
Tali Steveyssis 😭😭😭
Tali Steveyssis doesn't she upload videos no more?
+Zeynep Qassab th
Tali Steveyssis two tomorrow
I love that lipstick and everything, but... This whole video felt like an ad. This is the first video I've watched of hers in years and it doesn't feel authentic. The editing and film quality are amazing, great tips, but who has the money for all of this stuff?
A few items she used came from the last few ipsy bags.
You don't have to use the same products as her! They're just suggestions 😊
+Ashley Dufault They're just suggestions haha but I did notice that everything (almost) was what was provided for this month's ipsy bag
this is just a 'look' video though! not 'how to achieve this exact makeup with these exact expensive products'
You can notice she doesn't give exact color names on makeup products a lot of the time, just a general guide, unlike a lot of you tubers.
Hahaha i think its pretty funny how i read a positive comment that is against all the negative ones and after that i really just wanna read a negative one but when i scroll down i only see positive ones n ill be like ohh cmon why all the positive cover up the negative already
Same girl..still can't find it hahah
LMAO SAME
Okay but can we please appreciate how good her cheekbones look in this video
