      They had a right to be to be fair to them. Normally a Sherman could *never* beat a Tiger. Close range was the only way to beat the German tank, but most soldiers didn't know that until the number of Tiger tanks became dangerously low.

      @@lars7747 On the firing range, where one could line up the shot nicely and calmly, it certainly could. But under combat conditions, it was not even reliably able to take out the latest Pz IV - sure, it could kill a Tiger, but you had to be lucky, and your crew had to know exactly what they were doing. And many Shermans (as can be seen in Wardaddy's platoon) retained the original 75mil gun because the 76's HE shell sucked ass and was much longer (meaning the tank could carry less ammo), and in 1944 tank-busting infantry was a bigger threat than the rather small number of German heavy tanks that remained.

      @@lars7747 He most likely is. 76 can easly go through the front of the Tiger, but that does not change the fact that this scene and movie in general is absolute crap. It has the same problem as any other movie of that type, the German army is nearly always portraied as the most incompetent military force there is on this planet which makes me just not watch these kind of movies. I would genuinly love a propper WW2 movie without stupid plot armor or a horribly incompetent German Army. All quiet on the western front is the only exeption.

      @@captainpancake8177 We adapted a few of the German doctrines after WW2. This is an SS crew. They surely saw action on the Eastern Front. Even if not they were trained before being handled a fucking tiger so they would follow some simple tanker steps in the doctrine.
      First tank in a column gets destroyed or disabled. Second shot is on the back most. While the others are bunched up and trying to turn they are easy pickings. That worked best in tight columns as well. The Fury and another 76 are priority targets. By 45 the Germans knew a 76 can pen them frontally at ranges they are engaging here, as well as the Firefly. They are identifiable by the distinct muzzle which at points crews went to lengths to take off or do a paint job on the barrel to make the tanks not realize they have the longer barrel immediately.
      Tigers were slow on the gear shifts. They have no reason to advance and expose themselves against shermans which need to be hit anywhere to be penned, jumbo was not here in the war or a pershing. All they had to do was back off from the ditch through smoke cover already there and pick them off, not giving them any chance to actually flank and hit them in the back. 76 , which has the muzzle would have been priority number one if he survived, not the punny 75s from the 2 tanks he took out first because Brad Pitt was not crewing them.
      It is very unrealistic, especially the end scene. Made to look cool. Also this is not berlin 1945. You wouldn't really see a tiger standing alone without infantry or more armor around or close by to hold a spot so wide as this with no actual choke points to funnel the enemy through.

    There was a German officer or enlisted man, I can't remember, but he was extolling the undeniable greatness of the German tanks and talked about how superior they were to the Allied/American ones...his end quote went something like this "The Tiger was equal to 4 lesser American tanks...but the Americans...they always had 5". Our ability to mass manufacture tanks, that weren't as durable and deadly as the German ones, allowed us to win engagements with a superior vehicle. They made better ones, we made many more lesser ones that while being inferior in many ways...were still good enough when we buried them with the sheer amount we sent.

    • @codboroks97
      @codboroks97 10 місяців тому +12

      I just want to point out that the "superior" tanks Germany had were very uncommon on the western front. The majority of German tanks were simply on par with the Sherman, and neither had any issues destroying the other. The likelihood of a Sherman running into a Tiger during the war was negligible.

      @@adrian4596 It might actually be a deliberate choice by the Tiger's commander: in the initial setup (front-facing, at range, ambushing), a 75mm HE knocking out optics/hydraulics/electronics would be a bigger threat to a Tiger than the 76mm AP (which was notoriously unreliable if aimed in a hurry).
      The 75mm and 76mm each had marked strengths and weaknesses. The 75mm was weak against heavy armor, but very versatile overall, while the 76mm was a dedicated tank-killer but its performance was highly situational. So the actual dilemma the Tiger commander is facing here is: take out the strong but less-than-reliable gun first, or the weaker but tactically flexible one? Or simply hit the first enemy you get a good aim on, and rely on your tank's fear factor? (A less hard-nosed CO than Wardaddy would likely have broken and ran.)

      That would have been Soviets, but the Tiger was too mechanically fragile for Eastern Front conditions - 3 of the 4 Tigers that day simply broke down, and the fourth didn't achieve anything. Took two weeks to get the running again, only for all 4 to break down, one even irrecoverably. The Red Army tactic to deal with Tigers was like what Wardaddy's platoon tries here (zergrush them with T-34 til you can pop a shot in their butt), but in addition raking them with MG fire to break the optics. It was not too successful, but not as bad as the GI's experience after the Normandy landings - the Sherman was literally the worst contemporary Allied tank one could face a Tiger in: high, weakly armored, and horribly unbouncy. In broken country like the "bocage", a T-34/85 was not much inferior to a Tiger I, while a Sherman was just a rolling target with no hope of outflanking the beast and little chance of getting a penetrating hit either.
      Hence the Tiger's reputation. It was actually not such a good tank except under certain conditions, but the US troops first faced them under precisely those conditions. In 1944, the US troops would rather take a detour than fight Tigers, while the Red Army simply called in the ISUs which made good use of the fact that for all its bulk, the armor layout of the Tiger was basically WW1 grade, and a good hit with 152mil HE on those huge flat plates would cause enough spalling to shred the Tiger crew.

      I doubt that, at worst the engine would be dead and the tank would be on fire, but there could be a twist where WarDaddy says “Fuck it”, gets outta Fury, kills the Tiger commander and drops a grenade into the tank through the cupola killing the crew and basically somewhat damaging the tank maybe enough to ignite the ammunition.
      On a serious note, no, it would not have killed the Sherman, it’d have mobility killed it, the Sherman at that point already closed the gap and given the tiger crew was insanely incompetent, a round would be loaded after the tiger shoots their engine deck and then the tiger’s turret would turn into a ME-262 for a brief moment and yes the shot landed at the engine deck and most likely would’ve mobility killed fury, but it most definitely would NOT have blown up fury.
      So the conclusion is
      We have a dead tiger ( thanks to either Brad throwing a grenade through the cupola and into the turret or John reloads the gun and Shia lands a shot before the incompetent tiger crew could ), Fury is immobilized, fury crew live I guess because they don’t got a cannon anymore and a last stand would be useless

    I really like the movie because it comes close to what certain events would have played out. Since this movie takes places in the last 6 months of the war we can assume the tank crew including the commander of the Tiger is seasoned. Very seasoned.
    So it would have shot the the first tank, not the last. Staggering the others.
    But skip that and get to point where the shermans fired smoke to conceal - I think that would have been a solid decision. Also pushing the Tiger since you got no way out because of forest behind you and a straight road. Its fight or flight with flight beeing out of the equation.
    The "push" seems to be a bit to much head on instead of trying to flank. But this is not a biggy. What is, is the decision of the Tiger to push and fire while moving. The moving forward part is explainable to come out of the smoke to get targets. After that: just silly.
    The Tiger relied on range to enemies (T34 and Shermans got penetrated well beyond 800m). It had a slow moving turret. Very poor accuracy on the move (all the WW2 tanks had) and whatever you do, you dont want the enemy to get close or even on your flank or back.
    So after the Tiger cleared the smoke the realistic thing would have been: stop. Aim at Fury (since it has more leathal 76' gun). Kill it. Aim to the other tank. Kill it.
    But its a movie after all.

    Yes it's unrealistic in many aspects, mainly that no US tanks ever faced a Tiger 1, Brits and Canadians did though, fire flies evened the playing field later on, but I think they wanted to show all of the stereotypes of Sherman's vs Tigers that we've heard over the years, "it took 4 Sherman's to knock out 1 Tiger, The Sherman's would have to charge it and flank it, the Sherman's rounds bounced off the Tiger", when in reality War Daddys easy 8 Sherman could have penetrated that Tiger face on at 1,000 yards, still a good movie with great sound design, it sounded amazing in theaters.

    • @Tank50us
      @Tank50us Рік тому +7

      Correction. The US Army faced Tigers in Italy, and were killing them with the 75. HOWEVER. After D-Day, the US Army faced Tigers three times: The first time the Shermans won, the second time the Pershing lost, and the third time they were being loaded onto flat cars so it wasn't exactly a fair fight.
      As for the portrayal, I don't think that's what they were going for. I think it was more akin to what we saw with Saving Private Ryan, where the TC was losing his grip as a leader. A proper TC would've had the 75 Sherman keep the Tiger blinded while the 76s went hull down and popped the Tiger from range. In doing so, they would've only lost one tank (the one in the initial ambush), but the other three would've stayed operational. Wardaddy's tactics were way off in this, as he basically fed his only other Sherman to the Tiger. Both of them staying on the same flank would've resulted in the Tiger being taken out no problem before the gun could get back onto them.

      This scene cause ridiculous amounts of discussion and pointless controversy. It's unfathomable how many armchair experts, field marshals and historians it attracted. Suddenly everyone's a war veteran and tactician pointing out what Tiger or Sherman did or should have done. And that's not even mentioning the fact that Fury could have easily penetrated the Tiger hull at this distance, or the fact that Tigers at that time were extremely rare sight. And here's a hard to swallow pill: Fury is still one of the most believable films set in the western front of WW2, and many ridiculous nitpicks directed at it could have also been easily directed at well known classics like Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers. Also there's an important aspect a lot of critics are forgetting. Human error. A Tiger at this time, in mid April 1945, literal days before the end would most likely be crewed by inexperienced conscripts or exhausted veterans

      Well, my father drove a British scout tank in that war. They handled it simply because they had no other choice at the time, and this was the same for the people on both sides. The sheer noise of being inside those things when they were running, whether or not you got hit by enemy fire, tended to ruin people's hearing after awhile, and my father had poor hearing for the rest of his life because of it. He was lucky that they never took a direct hit from the German tanks and anti-tank guns. One of the latter, hidden in some bushes, very nearly hit their turret on one occasion, just as they mounted the crest of a hill, but missed them by an inch or so, and apparently the shock wave alone shook the whole tank "like a dog shaking a rat", as he put it. They got the hell back behind the hill in a couple of seconds and called in some airplanes, which quickly knocked out the German gun, killing its crew. That was how they usually dealt with such situations, given that the Allies had total air superiority in the fighting over Normandy and France...just call in the fighter bombers. There wasn't a thing the Germans could do about it. Their planes were back defending the Reich against the Allied bombing campaign or trying to hold off the Russians in the East. They had nothing much left in the air to put over the western front...and that made it impossible for them to win the campaign. But they could still kill you. Not a situation anyone wants to be in, that is for sure.
