- On April 9th, 2014, history was made in Division 1 NCAA basketball. On that day, Derrick Gordon became the first openly gay D1 Men's Basketball player, making global news within minutes.
Derrick is a starter on the UMass Basketball team and was a crucial part of the team's NCAA Tournament run this season. His courageous decision has already #ChangedTheWorld of many and will undoubtedly continue to do so.
The UMass Amherst community is extremely proud of Derrick Gordon and hope you enjoy his TEDxUMassAmherst talk: Be True.

Why doesn’t this have more views?
Because its something that doesn't actually feed the soul. It doesn't...produce anything that is of good. Most people want to do what is mathematically sound.
This person and this talk are beautiful gifts to humanity.
I know this is 5 years ago and your life is completely different because you are at peace with yourself. Thank you so much for your story of coming out with honesty and integrity. You know now that the cost was well worth it. You are not responsible for how other people react to you coming out. They have to work through the process of acceptance and celebration in their own ways or if they stay as they were, that is their business. It's hard when it's family. If your own biological family rejects you, then you have another which totally accepts and celebrates who you are. Your Dad's response is awesome, saying that whatever, he loves you as his son just the same! It seems as though your Mom is quite a perceptive lady! Take care, my friend. Onwards and upwards! All power to your elbow, as we say in the UK!
People will soon realize that gay people are just as diverse personality-wise as people of any other orientation and that it's not all "sissy"-stereotypes. Nothing against a very camp or flamboyant gay person, but it shows that a lot of conservative people are often more irritated by that than the sexual orientation itself.
What a beautiful young man with a beautiful soul.

What are you on about? One gets self esteem from achieving granted, but imagine if you achieved but we''re completely isolated and alone- for life. You would still kill yourself. We affirm each other. That's what "community" means. In commune we're meant to live.

The rest of Leviticus hasn't changed either. Do you refrain from eating pork, shellfish, and the other prohibited foods? Do you make sure you don't mix your fabrics? Do you think people who curse their parents, blasphemers, and adulterers should be stoned to death? There are so many more rules and prohibitions in Leviticus, like no tattoos, not shaving cutting the sides of your head and beard, not planting more than one type of seed in a field and soooo much more but people always quote Leviticus 18:22 while saying those other rules no longer need to be followed because Jesus' death and resurrection fulfilled the law. So are Christians beholden to the laws in Leviticus or not?
