  • This video tells the story of the sixteen Carmelite Nuns who were executed by the French Revolutionary Government for refusing to stop being Religious. Their Cross started in 1792 when their convent was confiscated by the Revolutionary Government. They were forced to live in apartments and they had to remove their religious habits. However, despite the difficulties, they maintained their life of consecration and they offered themselves as a sacrifice for the salvation of France.
In 1794, the Revolutionary Government decided to arrest them for living consecrated life. They were put on trial and found guilty of "religious fanaticism" (among others) and sent to the guillotine. All of these nuns, dressed in their Carmelite habits, went one by one to their execution. Each of these nuns asked permission from their mother superior, Mother Teresa of St Augustine, to die. When the permission was granted they walked to the guillotine. One of the nuns spontaneously sang Laudate Dominum before the guillotine took her life. Their bodies were never identified as they were thrown into a mass grave along with hundreds of other victims of the revolution.
Ten days after the nuns' execution, the architect of the Reign of Terror, Robespierre, was arrested. He was executed the next day, ending the Reign of Terror.

Потому что они живут религиозной жизнью. После Французской революции религиозная жизнь (то есть монашество или монахиня) была незаконной. Тех, кто был уличен в религиозной жизни, либо ссылали, либо казнили.
