Eva and I recently visited the incredible city of Bologna, which I learned has an intriguing nickname: "La Grassa," or "The Fat." I was skeptical that this particular Italian city deserved the title, but Eva was determined to prove me wrong with the help of Bolognese food historian Luca Cesari.
It was all going great until I ate something off the menu and got food poisoning...
If you enjoy this video, please give it a thumbs-up and subscribe to the channel!

A massive thank-you to Luca for showing us around Bologna! My apologies for not being up to the challenge this time. Bologna and I need a rematch!

there was no hiding you were sick. I've never seen less enthusiasm for a meal. Harper is more like an excited puppy getting a treat when it comes to food.
I also noticed he looked pale. Could totally tell.
@@lauras6762 mmmm
Hats off to Harper's integrity and honesty even when convicting himself after having done something dumb.
A quick word from our sponsor, Pepto Bismol.
LMFAO
You mean Magnesia Bisurata. We're in Italy, remember?
@@icovada Is Brioschi still a thing?
@@shainazion4073 sure, I just use Magnesia
And our second sponsor, Imodium AD, who helps us alleviate any "explosive developments".
My God! I live in Bologna and was dreaming to meet you guys by chance. It hilarious cuz I'm a Puertorrican/American married to an Italian and I learn a lot of the tradition thanks to Eva. But my husband makes do Chicago Style Pizza at home😂
You are married to an Italian American then.
@@alessandrom7181 ahaha ti assicuro che di italoamericano non ha niente. A meno che la val di susa sia uno nuovo stato degli stati uniti. 😆 ama la pizza napoletana ma anche quella de Chicago
So sad for Harper, such a pity he couldn't enjoy the amazing food here in Bologna!
Few quick notes:
-real Bologna nickname is "la grassa e la dotta" 'cause of the food(obviusly) and the university, maybe the oldest in the word (if I recall well)
-Passatelli are not fron Bologna, they are actualy a Romagna's dish!
-the "breads" that Harper couldn't name at lunch was tigelle (the flat one) and crescentine (the fried one) and what Eva was speading was not giusto meat it was almost certainly pesto modenese (and it is unbelievebly good)
PS: would be lovely to meet you next time you will be in Bologna
Omg I love to learn. Especially about food. lol You are so lucky living there. We only have BBQ here in Kansas City. I'm sure it is very different from your BBQ.
OMG, Harper you’re a trooper! I had food poisoning from chicken and there was no way I would have made it through what you did. I am amazed.
Hope you’re doing better and I hope you get to go back and try all those delicious looking dishes!
No kidding. The 2 times I got food poisoning in my life, I could barely sit upright. I was either blowing my innards out on the toilet or collapsed in bed. A walking tour with tons of food would never happen.
Luckily, thanks to the strict controls that are compulsory on the food supply chain in Italy, the average food poisoning here is less severe than in other countries. But that lunch cold hav defeated even an healthy Italian, believe me! Three first dishes, one of them quite fat, and a gnocco fritto with vegetables and raw cuts is more than enough for a couple of days usually. And also the bolognese cutlet is not the lighter way of cooking meat we have in Italy.

😂😂😂😂
Oh, Harper... I'm sorry you couldn't enjoy the experience as much as you wished. There will be more opportunities which will be great for you both and great for us. I enjoyed the lighthearted way in which you put this video together. A true professional. We'll see you on the next one.
Stay well, Harper! Some thing similar but totally different happened to me back in 1997 when I spent five days in London with my English class. Due to mad cow disease, we had to avoid all steak houses. Instead of my friends, I did not go for bad pizza (Pizza Hut, Deep Pan etc.) or KFC and returned hungry, because there weren no proper restaurants nearby. this was at least as (culinary) terrible as your trip to Bologna. Enjoy your meal(s)!
It is really hard to be seated in a restaurant in Bologna, with one dish more exquisite than the other, and have stomach problems.
Dishes that in a normal situation would have been really a pleasure to taste them and instead realize that only the smell makes you stomach upset.
I totally understood how disappointed Harper must be looking back and seeing how unwell he was. My thoughts were immediately to rearrange and do it all again. So much quality content is worth seeing again, but with Harper feeling well. Thanks for the video. X
A nightmare scenario - food poisoning in a foreign land requiring the urgent use of a toilet! Harper, you did amazingly well, and it is obvious in the video you were not in top form. Despite all this you produced another exceptional video.
I have a feeling he "produced" a lot more than just an exceptional video. You probably could have heard him from Italy.
The real nightmare is not being able to enjoy that majestic food
Watching your videos is like a mini vacation for me. Shopping for new food and visiting restaurants is the best part of traveling.
I’m so sorry, Harper. Can totally empathize having had food poisoning a couple of times in my life and one most recently. There’s absolutely nothing that relieves it but time and rest. And most def keeping a safe distance from food which is cruel and unusual esp for a food lover like yourself. You are a real trooper for powering thru that. Hope ur feeling better.
Eva and Harper, congratulations on 200K subscribers!
Omg I really dunno if it is worse to be blind in Venice or be sick in Bologna 😅
Lived in Europe in my 20s and traveled non-stop. I can remember staying with my friend’s lovely parents on the island of Crete and getting food poisoning that lasted DAYS. I must say you were an absolute warrior for staying with the crew for the day. Anyone could see your mind was swimming in sickness and discomfort.
Awww, poor Harper. I was sick for days on an international trip and it sucks big-time.
I had a very similar experience, except it was chorizo and eggs for breakfast in Oatman, AZ. After breakfast, I drove back to Sacramento, which should have taken a day. But I stopped in Fresno and took a nap, then had to get a hotel in Stockton and spent the night. The next day, we finally made it home, but I don't remember the trip at all. I had a fever and was extremely nauseous. For the next week, I could hardly eat anything, not even a small salad. I feel your pain. I hope you made it back to Bologna to try again. For me, I don't think I can ever go back to Oatman.
Harper you did great! Travelling when sick (we've ALL been there) is so rough and the fact you got up and spent a day out and about and tried your best is incredible. Don't beat yourself up, you thought you were doing things right and I totally would have done the same thing!!! Hope you're healed up and enjoying yourself. I look forward to seeing your next trip to Bologna someday and seeing you your happy Harper self!
Go to Italy and not eat italian food - the gods of pasta "So you have chosen death!"
😂😂😂
Oh my gosh, I am so enjoying this series! Harper, sorry about you not feeling well but so appreciate you continuing to bring us this interesting content! Thank you to Luca, as well! So deliciously yummy!
I perfectly understand how you felt in Bologna. 2 weeks ago i also was food poisoned in a restaurant and i ended up in a hospital dehydrated bc of vomit and diarrhea...Poor Harper!!!
Greets from Spain :)
Oh, no! I'm lucky things didn't get THAT far. Hope you're feeling better!
Oh Harper! I SOOOO feel for you! I was in your exact position when we visited Paris years ago. I had a lovely salad -- can't even remember what else -- and it WRECKED me! I know the hotel cleaning staff thought someone died in that room. At least you were able to get up and move around and eat a bite. When I was finally able to move, we got on the subway, and a guy got on the train smelling strongly of meatballs or sausage or something and it was all I could do to contain myself until the next stop, where I proceeded to wretch right into the closest trashcan; didn't matter one iota who was looking. You did well to hold yourself together. I hope you get to do it all again when you feel better.
Talk about dedication to one’s work! I can’t tell you how impressed I am that you decided to film a video on Bologna and it’s food scene and then when you came down with this stomach bug, rather than scrapping the project, you decided to make the situation the subject of the video instead. What a trooper Harper! I salute you. And that still leaves you Bologna as the subject for a future video, brilliant😁
Try getting a box of activated charcoal tablets, not expensive and takes care of most cases of food poisoning always good to have .
Yes!! Best idea ever!!
Good to know!
Grapefruit seed extract is even better. It saved my dogs life! Also, it has helped me and my friend many times. In 15 min you will be cured from any food poisoning.
Another great option is drinking ginger ale which many people find helps with upset stomach and also sea sickness. Avoid pure ginger as that won't end well.
Also you can eat raw fennel (easy to find at the market) to help your upset stomach. It works like magic and it's kinda quick. I'm sorry you felt so bad and couldn't enjoy anything. I'm from Bologna, but I don't live in the city, would have been nice to meet you guys and since it went that bad for you Harper, you definitely have an excuse to come back. 😊
Poor Harper I feel for you. I am totally sadden by the outcome of that wonderful day with Luca. What a gem of a friend with knowledge of food, history, and Osterias. Hope you can sort of recreate it before returning.
I feel so sorry for you. I got the flu arriving in Italy last time. It was still the best vacation, once I felt better. I hope you are well, Harper. Ciao to your lovely wife. Her recipes make everyone I take care of smile.
Again, feel well.
Oh Harper you poor thing. I feel for you. I ordered Poke one time in London (not understanding it was supposed to be raw) I asked the kitchen to cook it and I’m sure the staff would’ve thought I was crazy. Maybe it’s a good thing I did, judging by your experience. Hope you are back to feeling well now. Beautiful to see Bologna & it’s traditional food places, you did a great job👏☀️💗
You want poke, go to Hawaii ... all else is failure.
Yeaaaaaah.... I wouldn't eat poke anywhere but America. MAYBE Japan, since they speciallize with that stuff, but that's it
So sorry to see you weren’t feeling well. You must go back, but how loving and kind of you to make sure Eva had a good day❤️😊
My wife and I had food poisoning from subway for 4 days...we should have been in the hospital...
It's sad you were ill and tried your best ...but .. anyone that has gone through it feels your pain
Poor Harper, I’m sorry for the inconvenience… but I started laughing hearing the students singing “dottore dottore del buco del cul” now you should explain the thing to non italian people 😅
😂😂😂

How about you explaining it to us? "Doctor of the mouth, doctor of the arse"?
Was so sad seeing Harper suffer through all that, what normally would have been a fantastic experience. A lesson to never compromise on the food - get the best you can afford - and not to take chances at suspicious eateries.
So sorry you were sick, but you can always have a do over with Luca and enjoy the foods once again if you guys have the time. This was an amazing video filled with mouthwatering dishes and beautiful places. I hope to visit all of these amazing places one day!
that was absolutely the BEST gift from America you could have given him. I laugh so hard and was so happy that the reputation of Italian-American "cuisine" can be upheld. I can't wait to get back to Verona and Bologna (and Florence, and Venice, and Roma). This fall - a painting residency there.
Povero Harper, girare in quelle condizioni a Bologna, un vero tormento!
I LOVE that Idea to take your own food to enjoy their Drinks in a Taverna... In Germany they have/had at least one place to do so - Wuerzburg, Maulaffenbeck - Here in Helsinki I would like to open a place exactly like that...
Do it!!!
I have always loved it when Luka has been on, he seems like quite a character
Quick rule …. Don’t order anything on a Monday with a cream sauce. It is the food they could not sell on the weekend. That goes in any country.
I feel for you Harper. My wife had a similar experience years ago in Milan. The only facility within reach was one with a hole in the floor (ugh!). Tough day. Hope you're feeling better! Ciao!
Harper! It's called, "communication." You tell the people around you that you have food poisoning. You go another day when you're not sick so you can enjoy it as well. Also, Harper...after looking at your eyebrows...I have eyebrow envy. That's all I'm saying.
I didn't understand that eather. Is your job too important that you can't say no to a food?
Poor Harper!!! About 2 months ago I got food poisoning from seafood... it was 7 days of nausea & vomiting... Could not even keep a few sips of water down for 7 days. It included a trip to urgent care & the ER. I think you did marvelously!!! ❤️
I had food poisoning in Morroco, the day of my departure, I can tell you I was way way WAY more sick than you seem in the video, fever, vomit, for hours,, was stuck in the diner for hours, and the smells , oh the smells, nothing in the middle east does not smell in one way or the other, (spices, gasoline, paint etc) I was a TOTAL mess, no apothecary, no hospital, no docter (it was a sunday) no meds,, just rest and water, and hoping things would better ... then getting on the airplane and keeping it together hhha, will never forget it the rest of my life ^^ You did an amazing job Harper , don't be so tough on yourself
"Arper, so sorry! I hope that you recovered quickly. And, thanks again for the authentic Italian and subtitles . . . what a great aid to learning the language. Ciao!
LOL! Poor Harper! I felt your pain. I’m so sorry you were sick, but what a trooper you were. I never realized Bologna had so many food options. This video taught me a lot.
Thank you for another great video on a Sunday morning - Harper, you are a trooper - I couldn't have done it - what amazing strength! Glad to see you are on the mend!!
Oh Harper what a great sport you were for Eva's sake. You took one for the team. You definitely need to go back. It all looked so wonderful!!!!Thank you for sharing with a good attitude.
I was wondering what happened to your middle of the week video. Now I know.
Glad you're feeling better buddy.
I really enjoy your videos.
Keep them coming!
Putting aside for one moment the tragedy of missing out on enjoying one of the world's true food capitals because of being sick, can I just express my heartfelt gratitude that you did _not_ put mandolin and accordion music over the scenes in the streets of Bologna...!
I know it's a small thing, and since this video had real Italians involved making it there was no chance they'd make this mistake. But still, after decades of videos about Italy where they just slap on some mandolin music in places where it has nothing to do with the local culture (Venice being the worst example), I sincerely thank you.
Just binge watched your episodes. Fantastic show, great food and great chemistry. God Bless you both. Safe travels.
I love seeing your adventures in Italy
Harper being sick reminds me of a school trip to Paris when I was 16. All kinds of food smells made me nauseous too, even the smell of chestnuts being roasted, a smell that I normally love.
Harper I don't know how you were able to sit there ugh! I had food poisoning once from a diner GROSS. God bless you both! Thanks Eva for sharing! ❤ 🇺🇸 🇮🇹 Al from SW Florida.
I don’t know how you managed that, because frankly you looked like death warmed over. On the upside, now you’ll get to do the entire experience over in the future!
Minus the food poisoning
I guess I have a sadistic streak because the sicker he looked, the more I laughed.
Congratulations on the wonderful video and the magical tour for Bologna "La Grassa" I'm sorry that Harper was sick all the time ... I hope he is better now 😘😘💪
Sorry to hear that, Harper!
Hope you recover quickly and get to enjoy the rest of your trip! Get well soon!
The book is ordered! Thanks so much for this! It was fun to watch you visit some of the places we fell in love with. We could taste the dishes...at least vicariously!
Poor Harper. Food poisoning is the worst. Glad to see you are feeling better. And, even though you were unable to enjoy it, the food did look incredible.
Harper, I learned that lesson eating raw oysters!🤢 and ate where seafood is the best on the Eastern Shore! Never, never again!!!!!!! Raw is out for me! Glad you’re feeling better!
You're never going to eat carpaccio then
@@littlewishy6432 …..nope! 🙂
The music 10 min 40 sec into the video, reminds me sooooo much of when i come on the midieval festival and marked every year in horsens denmark
Oh Harper that makes me so sad that you couldn't get to enjoy the amazing foods that you were shown. Hopefully you'll go back and perhaps get a part 2 of the history of Bologna and truly get to enjoy it as it was meant to be. I will say you were such a trooper to stick it out and put on a brave face despite how ill you clearly felt. Glad you are feeling better and maybe stay in your comfort zone of Italian specialties!
Thing happen Harper.. You were a trooper hanging in there with all that great food even you were not feeling great. Thats a great sign of respect. This scenario served as a travel tip to all visiting Italy. Stick with the local food.. Hope you are feeling better, hope you can go back to Bologna on a future trip feeling better health wise so you can enjoy all the wonderful food. Eva was happy enjoying the good food and conversation. Next time stick with local, and have some stomach medicine in your backpack. Great video.
Poor Harper! I was just in Bologna and saw all the sushi and poke places, we were tempted BUT....decided to go to Simoni instead. The salumeria scene there is amazing, meat and cheese lovers heaven!
This is heartbreaking!! But I’m sorry to say that I laughed at your pain, Harper. More than once. 🙈 ❤️🇮🇹
Me too but I felt awful for doing so. 😂😂
Ohh .. truly what an amazing episode. So sorry to hear you were unwell Harper - it's such an awful feeling. Luca is amazing, and I would love to hear more from him. What a wonderful collaboration!
I feel for you Harper! My wife and I were on a business trip in Milan many years ago and got sick from bad clams at a very fancy restaurant. We were sick for the entire trip, driving to Switzerland and Germany to visit clients and just miserable the whole time. I don't wish that experience on anybody. Hope you are feeling better. We had many great meals in Bologna. Hope you can go again when you are feeling well.
I really feel for you. My now-ex-wife & I (not ex- because of this, BTW) were on a wine tasting trip in Napa Valley. Each day, we would go to a couple of vineyards, then she would be not feeling well, and we would have to head back to the inn. When I said that she wasn't feeling well, I am understating things. She would become violently ill. I would say, "Come on, let's go to the hospital," but she kept refusing, and she wasn't willing to cut the trip short either. The best I could do was to make her promise to go as soon as we got home. It turns out that she had a full load of gallstones, and she was taken for surgery in a matter of hours after getting diagnosed. While it is not a minor thing, I was glad that it was something that could be quickly taken care of, because I was terrified that it might be something worse -- to the point I had some concern about whether she was even going to make it home.
haha your face during those meals is priceless i feel ya
I couldn't stop chuckling throughout the video either. I thought there was something wrong with me 😂
A bit of history:
The FIletto alla Rossini is also called "Tournedos alla Rossini" because he wanted it cooked in front of his guests. His french chef said he was embarassed to prepare it with people around so Rossini told him "Et alor tournez-moi le dos!" then turn your back to me!
It just occurred that your 2023 tour is pretty much during my son’s 13th birthday and I honestly can’t think of much that would excite him more than getting chef tips from Eva in Italy 🇮🇹. NOW TAKE MY MONEY YOU FEINDS!!!
Thank you for making me feel sick for 17 minutes by watching Italian food. I never knew it was possible xD
Man, food poisoning is just the worst. I must say you handled it incredibly well. Very brave.
Oh Harper, I was feeling your pain for sure. I have been there and I give you lots of credit for making it through. I could not have sat down through any of that. With that said I hope you get to go back to really enjoy it. That food looked absolutely amazingly delicious!!!!
hope you feel better harper - enjoy your trip
Aw. Sorry you were ill, and am shocked you were able to eat. That said, it was a great tour, I learned a lot, and the history of pasta book sounds great!
Poor Harper, You look so ill in the restaurants but this was also such a relatable video. It reminds me of when I was sick down the side of Mount Vesuvius - the winding roads and heat did not suit me!
Huh I have a very sensitive stomach so I am very familar with food poisoning ☹️. I feel so sad for you Harper. Once when I visited Italia I got a very strong pain in my tooth that was soooo bad too! Tanti saluti da Germania! Siete fantasici ❤️
Harper I cannot even imagine! As someone already mentioned, such a trooper! BTW, Luca and I have the exact same glasses.
I developed sympathetic nausea after about 7 minutes and had to pause the video for a half an hour. I'm glad you made it. Now I have to go to Bologna again!
I’m so sorry that you weren’t feeling well for that momentous experience . I will say that you were a real trooper!
i mean, eva could've done this episode by herself. it would've been a fascinating episode.
La maledizione di San Petronio! Come si fa a pensare di mangiare Poke a Bologna! Un grande abbraccio bolognese dal Perù.
Much respect man. I hate feeling suck and when I feel off, I can't be productive whatsoever. I can't imagine eating all that food while being food poisoned...
You will probably not find this reaction, coming so very, very late, but our copy of STORIA DELLA PASTA IN DIECI PIATTI arrived yesterday. We have read a bit and are ecstatic. Sorry about the mail system (US &
Italian!) The book is fantastic! If we might be so bold, we would recommend Massimo Montanari (professor) in Bologna. His books are also wonderful. We especially recommend IL MITHO DELLE ORIGINE which dovetails beautifully. Thank you dfor the recommendation.
The second hand sickness I’m getting from this video had me gag to the sight of bread and ham for the first time in my life.
It's so amazing they took you everywhere to see the sights and eat the food. Such a horrible turn of events to make it so you couldnt fully enjoy it ;-;
I had the same thing happen to me in Rome. Curse of an egg salad sandwich. Thought i was going to die. Two days before i was going down to Naples, to race a horse in Italy's biggest international race.
Poke in Bologna? Harper, does the phrase “When in Rome…” ring a bell? Judging by the look on your face, you were hurtin’ for certain! Good effort to power through a bad day. You will have to do a do over in Bologna in the future!
Poor Harper. Been in your situation. Thanks for being honest about feeling lousy.
Wow Harper… bummer! Take care of yourself and feel better soon 😅. Eva wonderful clip as always! Thanks to both
I once got sick on a beach trip, it sucks to be sick away from home.
Esspecially if that makes you miss out on good food
Wouldn't have hurt to reschedule your filming with Luca, and got to a doctor/ pharmacy asap. Everything else could have waited! We always enjoy your Sunday videos, thank u, you both keep us good company during lunch or dinner :)
Arrrgh - I think a lot if us understand that feeling. My incident was coincidentally in Italy, too. At a roadside stop south of Rome I had a cappuccino, something I've never been especially interested in. Drinking hot, heavy cream didn't seem delicious to me, but that morning I gave it a try. It didn't taste good, but I drank it. About two hours later, while touring an old garden, I threw up in the middle of a path with other people around. No time to even hide among the bushes! I was mortified.😰
Thank you so much for sharing this! I have not laughed so well in a while. I am so sorry you were ill. Perhaps next time you will eat locally, but simply. 🤗🤗🤗💋
Bologna is fantastic!! One of my favorite places in the world
That sucks :( I am so super sorry Harper. Nothing is better when traveling than the food!! Especially in my own country of Italy, I can’t even imagine how sad you must have been :/
I see you met my good friend from Italy..Sal Monilla
Poor Harper! But I saw passatelli in the store window! I just made a batch last week (my father liked lots of pepper so that’s how I make it). Fond childhood memories of cranking the grinder handle to crush the stale bread when I could barely see over the table top. What about an episode on Italian soups?
I was thinking last week about If You were coming to Bologna in these days... And then I see You... Ever dreamed to see you! Hope you had also a quick trip at the street food festival near the station, at the "montagnola" there were a lot of shops with typical dishes including Americans selling BBQ and Germans, Holland, Argentina... etc...
15:10 "dottore nel buco del cul vaffancul vaffancul" is just poetry🤣
😂😂
For you it was Fish in Bologna. An innocent slice of fresh melone ad Ancona the morning before my flight home got me one year. Brutal... Glad you are feeling better. Deff. go back to Bologna!
Thank you for sharing. I miss Italy.
