Designer Clownfish Breeders: "This breed has black and white splotches. Clearly it must be called 'Blackstorm'!!" Me: "Aww. look at the little dairy cow clownfish!! moomoomoo!!"
Thanks for another great video. I really appreciate the knowledge about taking it slow when setting up an aquarium. I am in the process of putting together my first saltwater aquarium and have been relying rather heavily on what I learned from your Nano series and now this series. Right now I am trying to comprehend the Quarantine process, but I am having some difficulty finding a trusted resource on how to properly quarantine corals. Your video on fish quarantine was great. Can you put something together like that for corals?
P.S. 90 gal?? Looks smaller than my red sea 260 in which the display is only 54gal.. hard to believe! Anyway love the clowns. Cant wait to watch the progress on this!
This is so strange I started my tank then second day I added soft corals then on the third day I added 2 black-and-white clownfish I then added ATM colony I kept my lighting relatively low and on the fifth day I switched on my skimmer. By the seventh day my tank was fully cycled. Although I do not think an aquarium ever stops cycling. And when I go on live streams and talk about how I set up my aquarium I get a lot of beef from people who say I should not of started it the way I did it does not work apparently but I know have 15 healthy carols and two beautiful black-and-white Clownfish. I don’t plan to add many more fish only perhaps a yellow Tang. It’s going to be coral dominated and I now have started adding LPS and SPS Carol It is now eight months old. Thanks so much for the video enjoyed it immensely😀👍🏻💞
I have seen these black storms in Australia at gallery aquatica there so cool the pattern is amazing. The rockscape is interesting looking forward to seeing what it looks like with coral.
Thanks for all the information on cycling. It was just the other day (on Facebook...) I was discussing how you can do a fish cycle and it wouldn't hurt the fish, as long as you feed small amounts. Is there any evidence of the type of cycle you did on the one day tank, that the ammonia hurt the fish?
Thank you for the Video Jake, looking forward to more videos. At how many months or when would say you feel confident in adding SPS or high-end corals ?
My tank has been cycling for over 3 months and I still haven't even turned the lights on. Obviously, no coral yet, just 6 fish and a selection of cuc. 🏴❤💚🐠
Sure you can add SPS day one, the practice of waiting is more on the part of the aquarist getting the parameters in check - if you had an open water system with fresh supply of seawater you wouldn't wait even a minute to put Acros or Montis in.
I was just kidding about the man bun You're still the man I'm just jealous cuz my wife won't let me have any aquariums anymore I just want to rub those two new fish you got on my face and smell a reef aquarium again You're doing a great job
I know you said that Duncan's are good indicator coral because of how they open/close. As I am about to start my first tank, what are other corals that can be used as an indicator?
@@mstrait44 I believe the issue would be that the pumps would fight each other. Essentially the second pump would be making artificial head pressure as both pumps try to push water out the same outlet. You might be able to make it work if your plumbing and pumps were sized correctly, but it sounds like a headache to me.
Man I know you are going all Australian but I would have to do something about those lights. Are they BeeGee brand? Because they look like the Australian Disco.
yes but even if you waited one year, you'd still have to add fish slowly to give the biological filter time to grow to the bioload of whatever fish you add.
@@ReefBuildersVideo Thank you. I'm looking to start a reef tank and what I've seen so far is people adding fish first. This is really good information.
I don't like anything leading on glass. Not a fan of designing clownfish. but still love your videos. Jake your the best..love dugan, darwin clownfish better fit the best
I’ve been out of the hobby for 12 years now. I’ve followed loosely over the years. It’s incredible how much the “philosophy” of reefing has changed. I think we’ve really come into a new age of reef keeping and it centers around man made live rock. Cycling imported Fiji live rock (or nasty muddy Haitian rock) just isn’t happen now a days with sterile or semi-cultured/seeded rock.
yeah.. I've been for 20+ and first of all shoud be agreed what exactly is "cycling a tank". In my understanding two clowns in this tank IS actually "cycling a tank".
My journey: Day 1: setup tank with seeded rock, seeded sand and bottled bacteria. Set up daily measurement schedule, bacterial seeding and feeding every other day. Day 2: Add 2 clowns Day 3: test water & feed clowns Day 4: 0 ammonia, 0.05 nitrite and 3 nitrate Day 5: Add 4 hardy corals + 2 hermits, 2 trochus, 2 nassarius + water change Day 7: water change Day 12: Add 8 more corals + water change Day 15: diatoms pop up (yay!) Day 18: diatoms reached their peak, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrate + water change + removal of diatoms Day 20: happy tank Future day 27: Add goby and pistol shrimp and stay religiously on the schedule and seed with extra bacteria for a couple of days. In all that time, not one fish or coral was unhappy, the clowns bursted with energy and were eager to eat. I researched all genus’ to know what to look for. Only the toadstool is not opening up but is showing signs of shedding so probably shipping stress. What I think that happens wrong with people who just boot up a tank ‘without cycling’ is that they don’t keep an eye on their parameters and adapt accordingly by skipping a day of feeding for instance. Also letting the tank regulate itself after adding a small step up on bioload is important. As jake said, take it slow, let your bio part of filtration catch up and you’ll be good.
RB: “this inbred, designer, clownfish has black in it and the Darwin clownfish is black. Therefore the designer clownfish is like the wild, Darwin clownfish” Me: “yeah just like how my dog is a wolf because it has a tiny bit of wolf in it”
Is it that hard to test ammonia nitrite and nitrate every 3 days? Instead you would rather let your coral and fish show signs aka suffer for you to do something.
The concentration of ammonia that builds up (especially if you’re using a controlled method like supplementing with ammonium chloride) isn’t going to be enough to damage corals. Also, corals will have a biofilm of microorganisms that will metabolize those nitrogenous compounds. In addition, there’s some -omic studies that show corals possess certain enzymes that metabolize them as well. Cycling is such an odd term anyway. Basically it’s just a check to see if the bacterial population has proliferated enough to metabolize those harmful nitrogenous compounds at an adequate rate.
How does a marine biologist like yourself still say "clowns will host x". Clowns dont host anything. Things host clowns!!! Why is this so hard for people to get right? Seriously.

One of the least expensive corals in my tank is the Duncan yet it's one of my Favorites!
Mine too
Always a wealth of knowledge. Great video!
Miss you Jake!!! 😢
Never seen this style before, cant wait to see it 9 months from now👍👍👍
Your videos just get better and better
I love that aquascape wow the previous video wasn't crazy about it but now it looks great
Such a good informative video so excited coralline started growing in my tank!

Looks great Jake. Very unusual.
Awesome Vid as always Jake!
This tank is going to look amazing
Those clows are wild! Never seen that morph before!
nice Tank.. love the style..
Love black storm clowns.
My first choice for my pair aswell.
Stunning 😍
@Michigan fan haha the price us reefers pay 🤣 😂
Love your intro and all of the great videos. Thnks, Cheers!

The cows looking very cool.
It really turned out awesome.love it..😊
Thankyou for clearing up the cycle thing it’s hard to find a clear answer

Great choice of clowns Jake 👌

Will the coralline algae start growing without the lights??
Nice set up ,, i would buy if I could get a white frame
Where can I get this MaxSpect epoxy/glue stuff?
Another great vid Jake...Can't wait to see how this grows. But what about SPS? If tank is stable parameter wise, can u do the same with SPS coral?
Sure you can add SPS day one, the practice of waiting is more on the part of the aquarist getting the parameters in check - if you had an open water system with fresh supply of seawater you wouldn't wait even a minute to put Acros or Montis in.
Omg I love breeding pairs of clowns even more the stroms
Cost wise, how much are they being sold for? Is $400 a start
I was just kidding about the man bun You're still the man I'm just jealous cuz my wife won't let me have any aquariums anymore I just want to rub those two new fish you got on my face and smell a reef aquarium again You're doing a great job
Lmaoo
Tell her your going to get one anyone. Your wife shouldn’t completely control your life as they usually like to do
Have some self respect dude. Get a reef and don’t let her control you and if she persists, ditch the bitch.Would you do the same to her?
How many gallons is that tank? And what kind of clownfish are those?
I personally couldnt keep acropora alive until the 1 year mark and the tank was mature enough. Nobody has been able to tell me why though.
I know you said that Duncan's are good indicator coral because of how they open/close. As I am about to start my first tank, what are other corals that can be used as an indicator?
Pocillopora is a good one that's hardy and cheap, and the polyp extension is easy to see
@@ReefBuildersVideo Thank you!!
Jake, do you run all your systems at a salinity of 33 ppt or just this system? Why?
Tank looks great, I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Yeah I aim for 33ppt on all the tanks, mostly out of habit, but not against an actual NSW salinity of 35ppt either
Love those clowns. Do they sell to the public?
No but any LFS can get them for you
which DIY screen are you using for the top of the tank? looking to find a good and reliable one for my 120 rimless.
The CADE comes with this screen top
Normally I think designer clowns are hideous, but these are fantastic.
OMG, Thank you for NO mollies! Those clowns beautiful!!!!
How many days are you a cycle??
😎🔥👍🏾💯......awesome....t trav reefs & Aquatics
How do I get some of your Duncan's? @reefbuilders
I love it
@reefbuilders with the dual reactor feeds on the return line you would be able to run dual return pumps correct?
Not sure if that's advisable, but it's possible I guess
@@ReefBuildersVideo thanks, was thinking for redundancy sake. What would be potential issue(s) with doing this?
@@mstrait44 I believe the issue would be that the pumps would fight each other. Essentially the second pump would be making artificial head pressure as both pumps try to push water out the same outlet.

my fave is duncan but still bit pricey in my place Indonesia
Man I know you are going all Australian but I would have to do something about those lights. Are they BeeGee brand? Because they look like the Australian Disco.

yes but even if you waited one year, you'd still have to add fish slowly to give the biological filter time to grow to the bioload of whatever fish you add.

You should have went with a pair of Darwins since your going Australian with this one.
These are darwin descendents, and I already had them waiting to be put into a display
what mini light is that?
Illumagic Blaze X Mini
You should have added a pair of Darwin clowns, you can’t get any more Australian😂
I already had these two, but my TOP choice would be wild latezonatus clowns
Lucky I live in Australia lol
Hi nimo 🐟 is good job
🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🌊💵🌊💵🌊💵♥️✨🤟♥️✨🤟♥️♥️🤟🧑

Jake, I know you're a marine biologist but you just confused the heck out of beginners about saying you don't need to cycle a tank

LMAO
For sure a FISH tank needs to be properly cycled but this same philosophy doesn't really apply to a reef aquarium in the same sense

I would name the clownfish Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope.
howabout just J and Shaggy?
Stromatella snail, not nudibranch!
