Now you have me thinking....i often throw interesting rocks in my bag from trips as souveniors and i've had my share of lava rock from Sicily and other volcanoes around. i LOVE the thought of orchids growing on rocks..granted that is a big f*ing rock..plus i have a speciosum too...the smaller one and larger one
I have a habit of picking up rocks when I am out and about. They end up in my pockets for ages and look great after a few accidental passes through the washing machine!
Cool, looks great. Interesting... I just planted something in a mix of small lava rock, pumice and a little bit of peat/coco coir... thought it would be really light and i watered it and it got so heavy! Now I think I know why, the lava rock in it is holding a lot of water, aha! :) Yes, I planted a den in straight lava and it grew a ton of roots.
Thanks Oliver. Love your drill bit, gotta get me one of those! :) I actually have a lot of orchids mounted on rocks - mainly cattleyas and neofenitias and aussie dens. I have had bad luck in stuffing cavities with moss - leca works better for me in the cavities and sphagnum only as a top layer. Moss, if you stuff it in holes, will eventually deteriorate and, once the orchid is established on the rock, be really hard to remove and casue root rot. At least that is my experience. Thanks for putting the word out that there are other tings to mont on besides cork. Great vid.
I am a lazy when it comes to watering so I am hoping the Sphag won't go manky to soon. That little kiki is super dehydrated so I really wanted to give it the best opportunity to produce some new roots. If the sphagnum does go bad, I will have to take the plant off again. Perhaps with a chisel! Thank you for your tips 😁
Omg! I just mounted an epi porpax on a large lava rock chunk! I didn't use any moss due to the habit of the porpax, but lightly mist often! Good vide6!
There's a company out of Seattle Washington that raises carnivore plants and they plant these plants on a porous Rock and set them down in water and you don't have to do anything to them these are pitcher plants as what I've seen some dues fly traps but you can find them on UA-cam
I will get those D. regia seeds in the post for you tonight. I have mucho film from the RHS this weekend and will be showing you all of the new plants I have purchased. I think it is 15 or something.
Hi, just came across this video since I've been thinking about doing something similar. This video is now 6 years old and I wonder If by any chance this arrangment is still around? I hope you're doing okay now, your videos are great!
OK, first things first. is the rock a pet rock? Or is it just some random rock? How do you pot the orchid in the rock or is it mounted on a rock? Never use an mounted orchid rock to throw at people. You might hurt the Orchid. Personally, i like mounting orchids on Cedar branches. No branches were hurt or maimed during the mounting process.
OK question face, let's go! Firstly it's about rock. I grew it from a single grain of sand. The Orchid is grown/mounted on the rock (volcanic pumice rock). When thrown at someone, the orchid provides additional stability during flight. I also use cork or my homemade mounts for growing orchids. If you want, you can watch my "grow an orchid on a rock video" 😉
LOL. Good reply. Thanks for the laugh. there is a tree in Queensland similar to Cedar. Grows quite tall but takes a long time. I love the natural growing conditions. How did you manage the rock from a single molecule of sand? I bet you have Nibiru connections from the flat earth conspiracy theorists. It is how you made sand into rock. FYI, Dendrobiums provide the best stability during rock flight. Especially Latouria types. Save the coring for new keikis.
I am a diehard flat earther and aids denialist! I also don't believe in the moon landing, suspect everyone richer than me as being Illuminati and believe the world is run by lizards. Coring was a waste of time and would not bother next time. I prefer to mount a nobile Dendrobium for in flight stability. They are used to being thrown, although it's mostly into the bin after they die. Nibiru is a sentient planet that judges your unconscious thoughts. And yes, I have fully harnessed it's powers!
Nobody minds filming as far as I know - I've been doing it for years now. (btw, if you think this one is 'big' - you need to go to Malvern in June - much much bigger). See you there on Saturday - we should get there around lunch time.

Judging by the weight increase I think it safe to assume that the lava rock is capable of holding a great deal of water.

I look forward to seeing how your new mount gets on. I have tried various rocks over the last couple of years, but not lava. Will give it a try.

Super! I look forward to seeing and hearing all about it and getting a peak at your finds. :-)

Excellent, I'm glad you are going to be up there. I look forward to seeing you. I have the lovely wife in tow aswell.

i called the gardencentre already ;)
Cool, take some photos when you have done it. I would love to see you're version. Have fun 🤘
Oliver's Greenhouse i try have only one hand to use but i try when finished ain't that easy for me♿
Really? What appendages do you have left! I admire your determination Sir. You could glue the orchid onto the rock if it is easier.
+Oliver's Greenhouse complete left is gone severe stroke;(
That's rubbish! I am sorry to hear that. However, where there is will there is a way. Discipline and determination 🤘
