    I love your presentation, I’m from Puerto Rico and love Japan. How can I purchase Orchids from Japan?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  4 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately, buying plants directly from Japan is not easy unless you come here in person, get the correct documents and bring them back in person. Finding willing vendors is also tough. That said, a number of US based nurseries carry plants from Japan. For example, Plant Delights in North Carolina has a number of the woodland plants, while Orchids Limited carries quite a few Neofinetia.

    I’m amused that I recognised the roll of Daiso plant tie at the start of the video; there’s a roll just like it sitting out on my garden shelves right now. What were the tiny ferns you added to the back of your Neofinetia? They’re adorable.
    Thanks for the video; I’m currently reporting/mounting most of my orchids, so it’s given me a lot of ideas.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  6 років тому +1

      Ah yes, good old Daiso - that's a dollar store for all you who don't live in Japan. The ferns were a seedling Pyrrosia hastata and a small clump of the green penny fern, Lemmaphyllum microphyllum, but this one is a special leaf form (crested leaf). Both are native to southern Japan. Good luck with your orchids!

    What trees do you find handle epiphytes and the extra wetness well? Do most ficus in you experience? I'm in a Cold weather climate and am trying to do this indoors on basically house plant trees instead of the typical board or corkboard peice.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  4 роки тому +1

      I find that rough barked trees that exfoliate bark in small chunks are the best hosts. Smooth bark trees are OK as long as they don't lose bark in big strips, for example crape myrtle. Of course too many plants on one host can be problematic since it can lead to overgrowth of fungus, etc. that can hurt the tree. Therefore Ficus could be OK, but not optimal for growing epiphytes.

    Hi thanks for all information and I would like to know if you have a kokedama orchid ?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  6 років тому

      Right now I have just one grown that way - a Dendrochilum. My neofinetia collection are grown in pure sphagnum moss balls too - not quite kokedama, but very similar. Thanks for watching!

    Hi there! Great channel! I really enjoy watching your videos, they are so professionally made! I hope I get to that level one day. I wanted to ask you, how cold does it get in winter where you live? Do you take some plants indoor during the cold season? Or do you have to protect some of them in any way? Thanks :)

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! It gets pretty cold here in winter with average temperatures near zero degrees Celsius at night and highs around 6-8 C. The coldest temperature I've seen here in 16 years was around minus 5 C. Rarely does the temperature remain below freezing for a whole day, but that happens sometimes. Snow is common, but doesn't last long - usually not more than a day or two.
      I bring in any truly tropical plants - Cattleya orchids, most Paphiopedilum, and even most tree ferns are not quite hardy enough here. Cycads too, in particular Zamia species can't handle the winters. I keep them in my kitchen or a small grow room that stay above freezing, but are not warm, usually less than 10 C. They don't like it, but they survive.

    what species of bulbophyllum is this? it looks like Bulbophyllum ambrosia. isn't it too cold in winter, to keep it outside throughout the year?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  6 років тому

      Yup, that's the species. I was surprised that it does OK in the winters here since I have lost a number of non-native orchids that I thought would be cold hardy, but eventually got killed by a cold spell. Maybe this plant will get killed one day too. I've never lost a native species to cold here. The coldest this plant has lived through is around 25 F. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will continue to thrive.

      @@botanyboy1 - 4c!?! Im really looking into to get the ambrosia.. I did t knew u can keep it that cold!

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  5 років тому

      @@Royaliize Yes, it rarely gets down to - 4C, or even a bit lower, but since I put the B. ambrosia into the ume tree there hasn't be anything lower than around -1.5C, so its true resistance to cold is not fully known yet. BTW, it is still healthy, though it got too much sun last summer due to pruning the tree.

    • @Royaliize
      @Royaliize 5 років тому

      @@botanyboy1 i knew of Hardy orchids could tolerate get that low temps but not bulbs... People always say min +15c i guess they go kinda dormant when they Are in freezing? Im really looking forward to get some ambrosia's prolly My fav bulb so far. Just Hope i can keep it... Dont they like to be kept preety moisy tho like 70%+ humidity?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  5 років тому

      @@Royaliize This species is found in southern China up to 1500 meters elevation, so it is likely that there are occasional frosts at the higher altitudes. That said, I wouldn't push them very far past the freezing mark. Yes, they like lots of humidity since the roots are exposed to the open air due to their rambling growth form. BTW, several species of Japanese Bulbophyllum routinely endure freezing or near freezing temperatures in the winter months.

      @botanyboy1  6 років тому

      Yes, epiphytic orchids outside year round in northern Europe is not a good idea. It may be possible in some frost free areas of coastal UK and Ireland.

  • @kathymacomber5115
    @kathymacomber5115 6 років тому

    Do you live where it gets cold? I know you live in Japan so excuse my ignorance of weather extremes there.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  6 років тому +1

      A bit difficult to answer. I'd say average temperatures are similar to Atlanta, Georgia, but with less extreme temperatures. So figure an average day in August is up around 93 F with a low of 80 F, and typical day in January is up to 43 F with a low of close to freezing. That said, I've never seen anything below 24 F or above 98 F, and I've lived here 16 years. Summers start wet in June and July, get hot and drier in August, fall is warm, winter comes in December and stays until late February and is wet and cold, spring begins in March and ends in early June. June is the monsoon season. Hope that helps!

      I'm milking views of my yard for these videos, piece by piece. If I showed you all of it at once it would take about a couple minutes. The yard is just big enough to park four large sized cars if they were scraping door panels! In truth you've seen most of it if you watched the last 4 videos.
