When I first heard the opening bars of this piece in college (a thousand years ago), I was struck by a wave of familiarity so powerful that I started to cry. I wonder what it means.

A beautiful performance, wish I could've been there. But the cameraman can do better, give the woodwind and the strings a little more attention, and the timpani.

Lovely playing but hideous recording. The 1st violins have leaked onto the guitar mike, making them grossly out of balance with the rest of the orchestra. The guitar mike is too close and too dry (no reverb/ambience). Very poor mixing. Honestly, it is not that hard to get it right. A few minutes thought and a setup.
Fair comment about the 1st violins but your opinion on the guitar's reverb is personally and purely subjective.
As a professional player of some 35 years I find the guitar's sound here sound spot-on in that respect, and in general I find far too many recordings are spoiled by over generous application of reverb.
Always strive to hear the music and the performance rather than the reproduction, I'd be happy to hear this particular performance on a worn out cassette player with dirty heads.
