Love my Xmid 2P. Great all around tent, works well on platforms if you bring small screw in hooks. Being able to pack up under the fly in the rain, is a huge plus.
Wow, I just checked their website out....what a price difference! I'm thinking about getting the X-Mid 1 Solid with the groundsheet. That set-up time they show is amazing...tent and fly in one move, very impressive. Thanks again for the video.

Yes, but there’s trade offs between these two. The Stratospire 2 is indeed more expensive, it’s heavier, it’s bulkier when packed, and it’s a little more tedious to set up. However, the SS2 has more (functional) interior space for two people, better ventilation, and does better in high winds. Again, trade offs. I was very close to purchasing the XMid 2, but ended up going with the SS2 for my needs (2p + dog in alpine/sub alpine environments).
My Duplex last fall was 750.00 money well spent. I have had no issues, then again I have not been in a lot of rain this year. It’s been a drought year in New England. My backup tent is a BA Tiger Wall which is also a great little tent. This looks like a very nice tent. In DCF it would be a home run.
Right on! As a matter of fact, I just picked up the X-Mid Pro which is the new DCF version of this tent. I haven't spent the night in it yet but it's certainly promising. Thanks for watching!
@@SideTrailAdventures That sounds great. I am in a similar position as you, but in reverse. I have never hammock camped but after watching way to many Shug videos, I am thinking of giving it a try. Being older light weight is huge for me. That is what has kept me away from hammock camping but I see there are some light weight options. I may get a hammock and give it a try and use it on short weekend trips. I really like how the poles are offset on that tent, great idea. Take care
I have a 1 person X-Mid version 2 that will see 3 canoe trips this spring and early summer. I like the same advantages that you do. The two roof vents minimize the condensation factor very simply and effectively. My MSR Hubba is a nice tent, but vents in tiptop corners would solve a disappointing condensation problem that should never have been there in the first place. Two of the trips are base camping, so I’ll probably take along a 10’X10’ gain fly to extend out from the tent. Otherwise. I figure to guy out the long door for shade or rain shelter. @@jackvoss5841 Yeah, typically I open the bigger door. Small side "flapping", tucked away behind a back or still secured with a peg. So many options and so much love for my tent
I broke the video up into chapters so you could skip ahead to whatever feature was of interest. Hopefully the supply will catch up with the demand for this tent soon enough. Thanks for watching!
When we did our interview with Dan, he mentioned that the "fly first" pitch was a must from the very beginning. Definitely one of my favorite aspects too. Thanks for watching!
Bought a 1P on Drop when Dan first launched these and have been very impressed. I'm not normally a first adopter, but the design just makes sense. At ~30oz, it's an ideal balance of cost and features. Cutting that weight down more means a much higher pricetag and a single layer tent, which I don't like. Of course, I have used the 1P without the inner to "tarp camp" and found it plenty spacious a d about the same weight as the far more expensive single wall options. At 6'2" myself, I understand the space issues with most tents. I refuse to spend what an Altaplex costs, and have no interest in fighting condensation issues. I have given the 2P some consideration but I primarily hammock, so my need for am array of tents is limited. The 1P has performed very well when I've taken it out, so adding to that collection would honestly be more about the joy of accumulating gear more than meeting a need (which is okay too). I'm interested in the updates Dan has released, especially for the new 1P, and have considered pre-ordering one, but will hold for now. I have nothing but praise for Dan and his amazing tents. Very well thought out and surprisingly affordable.
Thanks for the thoughtful comments! I'm similarly wary of single walled designs. Knowing how Dan approaches problems and designing tents from the ground up to address those problems, I'm very curious to see how he addresses condensation with the X-Mid Pro. Given the choice, I'm going to sleep in my hammock but chasing the ultralight bug makes my ears perk up when I hear talk about the Pro. We'll see, but I'm optimistic. In the meantime, I will enjoy my 2P. Thanks for watching!
It's certainly a step away from the norm. I listened to Dan Durston get interviewed in a podcast and that did it for me. The guy is a gear nerd's, gear nerd. Thanks for watching!
Also, I watched to the end, and never heard a price… But I can look that up.:-) What’s amazing is that I’ve been wanting to replace mine and the Wandering Scotsman‘s tent with one that use utilizes trekking polls, but I don’t like the single wall on most of them, and don’t like the price tag either. My friend Sonic uses a Gossamer Gear “The Two” which is a lot like the duplex, only cheaper, but still single walled. I can’t believe this thing is only 40 ounces for a double walled, two person tent! So if the price is right, I’ll be getting myself on that backorder list! Thank you so much for this video! I also love the fact that it looks like you can separate the fly from the bug net on one side and look at the stars, and without affecting the structure too much. Because one thing I love about our two person double wall tent that does not utilize trekking poles, I can look at the trees, lightning bugs, stars at night, if the weather is right. :-)
I looked at "The Two" as well but like you, it was just the same design I didn't like in a different package. When they're in stock, they go for $300. There's also a kit that's sold (also probably an easy DIY) to pitch the inner tent without the fly for stargazing. Right now the biggest hangup is availability but the supply will eventually catch up with demand. Good luck and thanks for watching!
$600 for a tent, for a hammock camper, is a lot of money. You said it! This was a perfect video for me. I’ve been wondering about an alternative to the duplex, that is a reasonable price to me :-)
Yeah, if I had bottomless pockets, maybe $600 would be easier to swallow but I'm just not sold on the design anyway. The X-mids $300 pricetag is half of the Duplex but FAR exceeds the design in my opinion. I wish more companies would be willing to step away from established norms like Dan Durston to explore better ways to do things. Thanks for watching!
I'd like to try this tent. But honestly. My tiger wall 2 ul is only 113 grams more...packed. I might get the Cuban fiber one because that's really weight savings. Just would like to see one before ordering one.
That's the crux of buying direct from a company...not being able to hold it in your hands before purchase. They're becoming a lot more common since I made this video so you may luck out and see one in the wild! Regardless, you've got a great set up with the Tiger Wall. Thanks for watching!
When I'm not in a hammock and have to use a tent. Mine is a 1P X-Mid. I like the idea of the extra room in the 2 person but the one person works great for me.
Just got my X-Mid 2P Solid. We do most of our backpacking from mid-fall to mid-spring. I’m hoping the mesh reduction will help with the winter months while also being able to vent well. Can’t wait to put it though it’s paces. Great video
@@randyjackson864 I was on their email list of announcements. Tried to get a standard 2P but was unable to work the magic during their timed drops. I received a notification on the Solid drop and was able to get through the process with one in my cart. Kaviso sells them when they do. If you go there for a drop notification, make sure you create a profile and set your payment method, then don’t be late. They always sell out in less than 5 minutes.
Austin, at the vents. What is the material over lap of the flap vs the mesh opening when open and closed? I’m concerned if the vent can be left open in warm weather when it’s raining.
I can't specify a number without the tent in front of me but there was enough overlap that I had no issues with rain/weather coming in. I lived in this tent for 3 weeks in the Sierras with some significant weather and the vents open all the time. Never had an issue with the weather coming in.
Tarptent is double wall, most of them that i have poured over ie the 1&2 p , also u can get 2 different types of inner tent meshy summer or 80 ish percent solid w mesh top ( for venting ). poly is less hydro than nylon but a bit haevier than nylon. nylon is MORE hydro than poly. just laws of physics at work. I like 2p tents !!! for one lol !!! i like that u go into the reasoning behind ur choice !!! greatjob !!!
Yeah, there are other double walled options out there and most of them are great. I looked hard at Tarptent. The Xmid won me over with its design and fabric choice. Dan even talks about the pros/cons of poly and but won me over with his reasoning. We hikers have a good problem of so many shelter choices right? Thanks for watching!
Thanks for you're video ! Do you know how this tent can handle high winds ? Because I'm very interested in it but I do a lot of hiking in the mountains and the weather is often windy. Thanks !
Yes, I had high winds on a mountain the second time I used it. It has a line on each side specifically to stabilize for high winds. They're not needed to set up the tent normally but are there if you need them for wind. Thanks for watching!
I really like this video im interested in the DD xmid 2p. Dan is from the same area as me in Alberta Canada. The lanshan original is a double wall tent. Did you have a reason not to look into the original lanshan it's really the only other tent I'm interested in
Others also corrected my misstatement...the Lanshan Pro is the single walled tent. However, the X-Mid is far superior to any version of the Lanshan due to its design and materials. I obviously don't have any experience with the Lanshan but I do know others that have had positive experiences. The Sierra Designs High Route is a similar design but different fabric. Knowing what I know now with all the things mentioned in the video, I think I would have a hard time being content with a Lanshan or any other trekking pole tent. The X-Mid design and materials just set it that far above. I'd say if you're not in a hurry, the X-Mid is worth the wait since I believe another run is coming later in the year. Thanks for watching!
@@SideTrailAdventures no hurry I to am a hammock camper just looking for a new alternative. There is a few places high in the Canadian rockies that don't have enough trees for a hammock and my naturehike tent is a bit heavy.

Unfortunately, supply chain issues have been a long term problem for Dan...HOWEVER, I think that will soon be a thing of the past. His supply is catching up to demand so keep an eye on the Durston Gear website for products to go back on sale! Thanks for watching!
I heard in 2024-2025 there will be a DCF swap you could do for the top pitch, swap, out the poly soil for a DCF double wall tent, and buying the insides (net and solid) and outside ( polysil and DCF ) So you can mix and match for your hikes.
Short version of the story is I don't have a footprint. I heard Dan say in a podcast once that he didn't think the tent really needed one and I waffled too long when he put the official footprint up for sale. It sold out in about 3/4 of a second (seemed that fast at least). After taking this tent on the JMT with me, I'd probably bring a footprint if I were to do it again. I ended up with one small hole in the floor from a rocky pitch site but overall, the tent was exactly what I needed. Thanks for watching!
Short answer to your question is yes. I'd say there's still a few inches on either end when I lie down. The guy in this video is 6'4" and the 2P works for him (ua-cam.com/video/zv00YNhP7zc/v-deo.html) Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this review, I have been looking at this tent. I would like it more if they made the Pro version as a double walled to reduce the condensation issues that most single walled have. That is the reason why I have stepped back from the Z Packs and a few others. Does this tent come seam sealed?? Does it come with a footprint or can you purchase it separately??
I share your concern with the condensation. I'm interested to see how the Pro manages it. The tent comes seam sealed but no included footprint. There's one on the Durston Gear website but they're on backorder at the moment. I've heard Dan say that a footprint isn't needed but after using this one, I think it's more personal preference. I don't have one and the tent does just fine without it.
I just use the small baskets (think they're the mud baskets) but I set this up with the handles up. I've found the tops of the handles are kinder to the tent. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, that's the catch. I talked a little about it at the end of this video. I brought it up to Dan during our interview with him and it sounds like they're going to catch up with demand soon enough. Thanks for watching!
I suppose it's possible to lower the tent to the ground in cold and windy cold conditions. Otherwise in such weather you will need higher R value sleeping gear due to the openness.
It's definitely possible to pitch the tent all the way to the ground with no gap at the bottom. I've done everything but snow with this tent and it's taken it all in stride. A good pad with a solid R value is never a bad thing though 👍. Thanks for watching!
99% of the time, I keep everything assembled together like you described. The only time I've separated the two pieces is when the outer fly is wet from condensation or rain and it's time to pack up and move out. Keeping the two pieces separate (and maybe packed separated, in separate bags, etc.) keeps the dry inner piece from getting wet. Just a small feature to help things but no other reason I can think of you'd want to separate them unless you're trying to set up one without the other.
The High Route 1 certainly has the off-set pole design but the X-Mid is made of Sil-Poly instead of Sil-Nylon making it much different when it gets wet. The X-Mid also doesn't rely on the guy-lines to stay up, just the 4 corner stakes. The High Route is still a great option though. Thanks for watching!
Honestly may never part with this one. I'm a klepto when it comes to gear to begin with but this piece is unique. Nothing else out there like it and it sells out like wildfire when they drop a batch on the website.
Unfortunately I'm a gear hoarder...never sold a piece of gear and don't see it happening anytime soon. I hear there's another run of X-mids coming out soon if you want to sign up for the notification on durstongear.com. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It sounds like you are using this as a one person tent. The bad thing is for a two person, the other person is sleeping at the feet at the other person. So no interaction with the other person and they get to smell your feet. It is a good tent but not perfect.

Loose baggy tents are noisy and a pain in the ass in high winds and rain. The Dyneema version would possibly be able to be pulled tight with a few more anchor points, but why own a tent without a fly when the fly is all you need a great deal of the time if it's actually waterproof?

Take care
xmid videos get an automatic thumbs up from me
Right on! Awesome tent for sure...thanks for watching!

Right on...sounds like a blast!
Have a X-mid OG1P and always carry a bit of paracord to guy out the door. Just an added luxury to an already superb tent.
@@joachimlovin7308 G’day, Joachim. BINGO. One long door or the other oughta provide shade or shelter, ehh? And a welcoming breeze.

@@jackvoss5841 Yeah, typically I open the bigger door. Small side "flapping", tucked away behind a back or still secured with a peg. So many options and so much love for my tent
Oh yeah, those Z-Pack tents are so expensive. Great review, I'll check out their website.
Right on! Thanks for watching!
Good review, a bit long, but very well done. 'No other tents on the market, like this one', that did it for me too.
I broke the video up into chapters so you could skip ahead to whatever feature was of interest. Hopefully the supply will catch up with the demand for this tent soon enough. Thanks for watching!
Another nice thing about the pitch is that it can be done in the rain without exposing the inner
Edit: you covered the fly-only part at the end =)
When we did our interview with Dan, he mentioned that the "fly first" pitch was a must from the very beginning. Definitely one of my favorite aspects too. Thanks for watching!
Really great review - thanks
Right on, thanks for watching!
Hey dude, great video. I just met you up at Onion Valley Camp ground! you are killing it, keep it up man!
Right on man! Great meeting you out there! Thanks for watching!
@@SideTrailAdventures For sure! cant wait to see the videos you captured out there
Bought a 1P on Drop when Dan first launched these and have been very impressed.
Really cool design!
Thank you for a great review
Thanks for watching!
That’s a nice tent! I need to stop buying camping gear, but I just can’t seem to get enough 😂
Welcome to the club! I'll never have enough gear 😂😎
When I'm not in a hammock and have to use a tent. Mine is a 1P X-Mid. I like the idea of the extra room in the 2 person but the one person works great for me.
Right on! As long as the X-Mid gets the love. Glad to hear it's working for ya. Thanks for watching!
Just got my X-Mid 2P Solid. We do most of our backpacking from mid-fall to mid-spring. I’m hoping the mesh reduction will help with the winter months while also being able to vent well. Can’t wait to put it though it’s paces. Great video
Right on! I love that Dan is constantly trying to improve the design...never settles. Thanks for watching!
Frost River The Durston website says the 2P Solid will be available in early 2023. Today is August 2. How did you get a Solid in July 2022?
@@randyjackson864 I was on their email list of announcements. Tried to get a standard 2P but was unable to work the magic during their timed drops. I received a notification on the Solid drop and was able to get through the process with one in my cart. Kaviso sells them when they do. If you go there for a drop notification, make sure you create a profile and set your payment method, then don’t be late. They always sell out in less than 5 minutes.
Thank you for the review. BTW the Duplex is 699 to 749 now.
Ooof...that hurts. Gotta love "supply chain issues". Thanks for watching!
I'll wait for the pro, can't deal with that mesh.
I was able to get my hands on the Pro this past summer. It's definitely worth the price of admission.

I’m looking for this tent but can’t find one
Unfortunately, supply chain issues have been a long term problem for Dan...HOWEVER, I think that will soon be a thing of the past. His supply is catching up to demand so keep an eye on the Durston Gear website for products to go back on sale! Thanks for watching!
I heard in 2024-2025 there will be a DCF swap you could do for the top pitch, swap, out the poly soil for a DCF double wall tent, and buying the insides (net and solid) and outside ( polysil and DCF ) So you can mix and match for your hikes.
What a cool concept! Thanks for watching!
Great review! I didn’t notice a footprint. Do you use one, and if so, is it the Durston X-Mid footprint?
Short version of the story is I don't have a footprint. I heard Dan say in a podcast once that he didn't think the tent really needed one and I waffled too long when he put the official footprint up for sale. It sold out in about 3/4 of a second (seemed that fast at least). After taking this tent on the JMT with me, I'd probably bring a footprint if I were to do it again. I ended up with one small hole in the floor from a rocky pitch site but overall, the tent was exactly what I needed. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for posting a comprehensive review of the tent. It looks like you and your sleep system just fit. Do you think it’d work for a 6’4” person?
Short answer to your question is yes. I'd say there's still a few inches on either end when I lie down. The guy in this video is 6'4" and the 2P works for him (ua-cam.com/video/zv00YNhP7zc/v-deo.html) Thanks for watching!
Side Trail Adventures Ah, thank you so much for the link, most helpful.
@@barondavis5692 anytime! Good luck!
@@SideTrailAdventuresThanks so much for your quick response!
Great video. Question: Do you use baskets on your trekking poles? Do they impact tent setup?
I just use the small baskets (think they're the mud baskets) but I set this up with the handles up. I've found the tops of the handles are kinder to the tent. Thanks for watching!
Oh, yeah. Ever try to buy one of these? Where?
Why dissemble the inner and outer to pack the tent. Why not leave it assembled and save time?
99% of the time, I keep everything assembled together like you described. The only time I've separated the two pieces is when the outer fly is wet from condensation or rain and it's time to pack up and move out. Keeping the two pieces separate (and maybe packed separated, in separate bags, etc.) keeps the dry inner piece from getting wet. Just a small feature to help things but no other reason I can think of you'd want to separate them unless you're trying to set up one without the other.
Tarptent stratosphere Li 👍🙂🇫🇮
Whatever keeps ya dry in a storm 👍
Sierra Designs made a tent like it.
What is price of 1 person?
Looks like $240 according to the website.
I just wish it would come in orange. I like a visible tent for hunters.

Keep and eye on EBay. I just scored a new X-mid 1p for $299. A really great deal.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It sounds like you are using this as a one person tent. The bad thing is for a two person, the other person is sleeping at the feet at the other person. So no interaction with the other person and they get to smell your feet. It is a good tent but not perfect.
Every tent design has compromises. Dan Durston was the first person I've heard say that so he comes by it honestly. Thanks for watching!

Loose baggy tents are noisy and a pain in the ass in high winds and rain. The Dyneema version would possibly be able to be pulled tight with a few more anchor points, but why own a tent without a fly when the fly is all you need a great deal of the time if it's actually waterproof?
