Tornado Bugs - Insect Art - Slow Motion Trails V25400

- Most any summer you can find swarms of tiny little flies circulating over the lawn or other damp grassy area. These swarms can be somewhat sparse or form large dense clouds, but are almost always shaped like a tornado of sorts, hence the nick-name "Tornado Bugs". These little insects are actually known as "Fungus Gnats", and usually live in areas with damp soil where their larvae hatch and develop in as little as 10 days. These swarms are typically made up of one female and a ton of males hoping to mate with her. Like a school of fish, swarms may also confuse predators, helping to protect the entire mass.
These scenes were filmed with a Sony a7iii and Cannon 100-400mm lens at realtime and 120fps. The resulting video was processed into still image sequences and then composited to yield artistic results where we can actually trace the flight paths of individual insects.

Very neat visualization.
It's crazy to think that behind each of those little trails is an autonomous critter that's flying around with stored energy that it harvested from the environment, and that every few days/weeks (?) two of them combine to make a new set of critters that are slightly refined from the beneficial characteristics of their forbears.
Wow... very beautiful and interesting!
Thank you! Cheers!
Wonderful video. Thank you JC Megabyte!
Thank you kindly
Super, thanks
Thanks for checking it out! Glad you enjoyed =) Full-length stock footage clips will be going up on the JCMDI Stock Footage channel shortly...
Wow how cool is that!!
I got them by my bird feeders right now and looked them up and found your vid. Very cool !
They are surprisingly common in most areas - especially in summer, but are largely overlooked and generally uninteresting until they make these mating tornadoes. I learn the coolest stuff by filming and lookin' stuff up. Thanks so much for watching and the nice comment =) Have a great weekend!
@@jcmegabyte I actually seen them in the same area over the years but had no clue about them. Thanks again for the great information.
It's been awhile...good to see you back!
It seem like I've been neglecting this channel lately, since most of my posts are going on the B-Reel channels. I'll be trying to post more often. Meanwhile thanks so much for watching and the kind words. Happy holidays!
