Hurling combines the skills of baseball, hockey, and lacrosse in one high speed, high scoring, high octane sport that will blow you away. It's taking off in North America. Try it! - Спорт
Worth pointing out these guy's are all amature and are not paid, playing in front of 80K supporter's,and heading back to work on the monday, maybe tuesday......
That's what I like about it, they're putting their all in just for the love of the game
More than that for the pride and honour of your home place
David Brennan why aren't they paid if that many people pay to see them play?
@@gamingwithwolf9990 I don't think it's so much that, considering that GAA has branches outside of Ireland. I suspect it's more they don't want the game to become dirty, corrupted and all about ratings
Is this true? Do people buy tickets? Who's making money off of this?
Ah hurling the wonderful mix of hockey and murder.
best part is clearly the lab coat-wearing scientists as the goal referees
There called umpires
Umpires don't wear coats like that, they're clearly scientists.
^ boom
Those are the orderlies from the nuthouse they let the players out of !
they don't wear coats any more its a white and blue jacket

replacement killers.
This track was on Fifa 98 that's how I remember it
They should add alligator pits and a roaming pack of wolves to the field
Probably would make it easier
there basically is lol
There was, but then the league and players were being fined for animal cruelty.
I believe you’re referring to Scottish hurling.
Yea this isn’t tough enough
I just love the way you've kept your original sports. When everbody else went wimpy, banning kicking or use of the hands and so forth, you lot kept it raw.
I ran into hurling about a year ago... I fell in love... It wasn't like l had just discovered it. It was like it had been there all along.. 💘
This is the absolute perfect sport - it has everything...unbelievably skill, incredible courage, honesty (no diving or cheating), character, sportsmanship and loyalty...you play for the team where you're born and never for money. All these guys are amateur and have day jobs but train 5 or 6 times a week - the commitment is astonishing. This is the way sport should be. Brilliant video too! Fair play to ya Eamonn.
No diving or cheating because they aren't payed so have no reason for it
Why isn't there a professional league?
Aerosmith The best if you pay them u take away the pride and love of playing. we have 32 counties its all about the pride of playing for your county once you start buying players they wont be playing for their counties anymore and what supporters would watch a game where they arent even their own real teamates from that county because for the supporters theres no real pride in winning after that
@@christinefitz77 Yeah I get that but having a professional league helps develop the sport skillfully and tactically. You also have better athletes but I do get your point.
JJ Eatt ya true i dont know much about professional sport but what if some players or teams were making more money than others so they can develop their skills more nobodies equal anymore i guess.
The Irish will literally stop at nothing
When will they play an exhibition game at Wembley
Is that a insult? I am irish
@@remypereira3096They did some in the 1960s.
Now THIS is sport.
No skill
@@brynbrowning2288 Tell me how this doesn't require any skill
They're using a stick g, not there body easy answer 😂 even soccer is more of a game lol
@@brynbrowning2288 ha like to see you try to play a game of hurling probably wouldn't even last a minute
Yeah i play rugby every week but hurling id be out in the minute 😂
This is attempted murder and field hockey mixed?
RMAGALHA1 Haha. Yeah it kind of looks like there are no rules and you can do anything.
+Emma J na there is acctualy a good few rules like if you push or shoulder someone in de back they get a free
The main rules centre on handling the ball
.First one is the ball can not be touched on the ground with the hand or lifted with the hand
.The second is you can only handle the ball twice in the one possession
Thirdly you can run with ball in hand for more than 4 steps after that you can either pass it or carry the ball on the stick all the way.
You can hand pass providing its not the third handling of the ball and its slapped not thrown with the hand
the taking of frees which the ball is placed on the ground then lifted with the stick and thrown upwards with out the hands and struck with the hurley
.They last rule is no offside except the goal square. There are many more but these are the key ones
You mean hockey of course, the one on is ice is called ice hockey, no such sport as field hockey in Ireland or the UK, it is just called hockey. ;) And the Brits invented both, so the British titles are correct! ;)
Lol no
A bad game of hurling is better than a great game of soccer. Simple as that
Disagree there is nothing worse than a bad game of hurling because its a huge let down
wow. this sport is crazy!!
Yes
This sport is even crazier when you play 😝😝😝. Ain't no shit, I had 2 matches of hurling and this sport is tiring
This is one of the best videos on UA-cam. Excellently edited and compiled, with music that matches the pace and enough commentary to show the urgency. In all my years of trying to explain hurling to the uninitiated worldwide, nothing has summarised it as well as this video.
Go raibh mile maith agat, Eamon!
Gaillimh abu!
With my dad being from Limerick I had a choice of two games to play growing up, Hurling or Rugby. I picked rugby. I wasn't mad enough to play Hurling.
probably not skilled or intelligent oh or brave ,, you in other words chickened it
@john hunt hi would yeah you f off yeah mental case.. Rugby... ur going to the ground end of... even when u score.. bar a kick obviously...
If you lose ur shit on this pitch you could do damage lol... personally
I still can't feel my shins lol 🙃
i love being irish just cause of this legends we are :)
There was nothing on TV today so I watched a game of Hurling on Sky... had never heard of it before as an ignorant Englishman but I really enjoyed it! My two favourite sports are Football and Cricket... but your sport has certainly caught my attention like others don't :)
Good man Lewis come over to watch a game your most welcome
A few years ago I had a family reunion in Ireland and saw this game on tv for the first time was blown away been watching ever since and I am Canadian so the hockey skills needed for this sport helps gives me my hockey fix
Yes. This video doesn't show it because I wanted to showcase what a goal looks like, but goalkeepers are surprisingly good considering the size of the net that they have to defend.
i will forever remember seeing a clip on TV of this about 10 years ago, where a goalie named "Joe Germnay" got in front of a guy shooting the ball at point blank range and blocking both the ball and the stick with his face...as he was on the ground and not moving the announcers said "and a great block by Joe Germany!"...my family brings this up surprisingly a lot sicne then
Brilliant! I was looking from something from the GAA to explain to my American friends what hurling was about .... now if only you could put more Wexford goals in there it would be perfect ....
Seriously, great job. Thanks!
Why is this game not televised in america?? They would get alot of viewers
nickgomez93 alot of americans attention span is too short for this sport, most americans loves sports with short bursts of action like american football or baseball, this sport would be way too exciting for the yanks, they started televising in the u.k nearly a year ago,
Can you get Sky Sports in the US? There's hurling on today, next Sunday and the first Sunday of September.
giddygiddy85 That's actually incorrect. Basketball and Ice Hockey are pretty continuous, and soccer is hugely popular in America. There is a market for this type of sport in the states.
giddygiddy85 That doesn't even make sense. If anything, a person with a short attention span couldn't watch football or baseball, because the breaks would get irritating.
its not the breaks that irritate them, its the game itself,,,,there is a market for this sport in america tho,,,,i was slightly takin the piss outta the yanks in my comment for the craic lol
My wife and I were in Ireland a year ago and were making our way out of Dublin during a game day...the crown intensity was electrifying! When we get back to that beauty of an island, we are attending a match.
Sup
As an American male who has always been most interested in American football I have to say this sport looks bad ass, intense and more than anything a ton of fun to play. Very interesting. 👍🏻
Being from NZ, I've always kinda known about/heard of this sport but never really seen it or known how it's played..... until now, and it looks fucking awesome!
It would probably suit the kiwi character
It helps if you’ve grown up with it. I’m looking at doing a hurling display at a Medieval Fair. Maybe we can get some high class medieval character to stand in as goalkeeper while the peasants shoot for goal (or goalie). Not sure yet what to do about helmets, Medieval helmets tend to be too heavy. Re-enactment with modern helmets would look absurd. Could disguise them ?
Any ideas ?
Brendan Williams dunno maybe paint the hurlin helmets silver or somethin
Good idea 🙂
I showed my dad and he was blown away lol. Also he said that every sport must stem form Irish hurling because it’s got everything in it. The mother of all sports
It's actually originated from a sport that's over 3000 years old and native to Ireland :p so maybe xd
@@calibvr whats was it called in ireland historically
I am a lacrosse player and may I just say, that is the coolest sport I've ever seen. I've seen some posters of it in restraints and from then wonders what it was, now I know and I want to play it actually.
Fair play, Eamonn! This is the standard for hurling videos. As an American hurler, I am constantly trying to explain the sport to other Americans and I always end up showing this video.
Anybody considering playing should certainly check into it!
I wish this video was available on mobile devices, so I could show people on my phone about this amazing sport! I'm seeing the all ireland semi final this August all being well. :)

Yes extreme sports, how many teams are there in NI ?
This is the best thing I’ve ever heard

Never watch overseas sports like football or lacrosse but every year I'll be watching this. Beats out most sports for me in the brutal market
Very few ever get injured plating Hurling. A lot more get injured playing that "ladies-seeking-Oscars-game" called soccer.
Broke two fingers playing hurling when playing against some ruff bastards
Barney Armstrong Because football is a tougher sport.
Mitosz Openkowski Straighten them, tape them up, get back on the game and you'll be fine ;)
Im playin again now
It is not just a game for males. Females play "Camogie" which is very similar to hurling with same main rules etc.
Getting hooked from behind has got to be the most annoying thing ever.
what about getting your hand smashed going up for a catch
lkit97 at least you could see that. It just seems like it would be more annoying to have it come from behind.
+Addy C: Been hooked going for a point. Most annoying.
+Sagan I've been hooked doing every possible thing. If it's possible it's happened to me

I’ve played lacrosse and hockey. I though they were tough. My goodness these guys are next level.
Seeing a match between the top tier teams is an incredible experience.
Hurling has everything a field game should have- skill, intensity, good physical element and plenty of scores.
I have to say I am not much into modern music, but the sound track is superb with this video.
It helps make the game fluid and alive. It takes me back to my younger days. Playing, watching, and dreaming of going to the all Ireland finals. No other game compares. Playing or watching is a thrill that connects me with my heritage. its a pity I am older and will never see that dream come true.Still I love to watch every minute of every match at any level.
All the best to those who still dream.

How many skulls have been cracked by swinging sticks?
Well you have to wear helmets now
+TimTomJimJom that did only come in though in the last 10 years
Alannah Hurley i'm sure he knows that
tskwared667 and all of these guys who play in front of 80k plus people in croke park arent paid.
enough to make them put on helmets
Fun Fact: this is the predecessor to ice hockey that was developed in Canada, but hockey evolved to it's own sport from this.
So much in fact that a lot of the rules are the same/similar to hockey.
When I was in Ireland about 10 years ago I gave hurling a try. And it was one of the hardest things I've ever tried to do.
We do play in the U.S., even if it's not televised. All amateur, but the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) is the main sanctioning bodies. In Flagstaff, Arizona, for instance, we have a team of former high school football players, rugby, soccer, baseball, etc. players that have morphed their skills and do the best we can. The guys in this video are phenomenal, but the GAA has different divisions (we're in C) and it's an absolute blast.
Junior grade i think you meant to say because even best players do not get paid so the sport is completely amateur
Also in places like New York and Chicago, many county players have gone there to work and play there. I know of some that have done just that.
To anyone outside Ireland who's interested, hurling semi-final on Sunday 5th August (Clare v Galway), and final on Sunday 19th.
The All-Ireland Final will be between the winner of Sunday's (replay) match, and Limerick.
Find an Irish bar near you (with real Irish people, I mean), and they'll either be showing the matches themselves or will be able to give you information.
Or do an Internet search for "GAA hurling" plus your location.
Most big cities around the world with Irish communities, especially the English-speaking world, have GAA clubs where you'll be welcome to watch.
This looks like a sport for absolute nutters. Where do i sign up?
lol
They are parts of ireland where they start playing as soon as they can walk. The majority of hurling players would not be able to tell you when they started
stoney71 same for most professional athlete in any sport
stoney71 and I know they are not paid but they are still top level
your ignorance precedes you ,, research the sport before people start laughing at you
I'm playing this for the first time today! I'm pumped.
I played Irish football cause my dad played it and Donegal is primarily a football County but I played at feis seen hurling games and had neighbors who were galway Kilkenny Clare hurling counties that qame is madness nearly every person I knew who played it including my wife who played camogie had stitches somewhere on their bodies and the speed of it is incredible Irish sports are not boring there is always something going on
It should also be mentioned that there is no shoulder pads, everything is bone on bone so to say
That is the answer, what is the question?
... Uhhhh, number one used quote, said by Irish sportsmen and gay porn producers?
@@marti5420 youve got to be a clown
i remember the first descriptive i read of hurling "your allowed to hit(check) anyone has the ball, had the ball, had the ball in recent memory or looked at the ball"
In Senior County Hurling, there are two half's of 35 minutes each (Full match 70 mins plus 1 or 2 mins injury time added), in other matches two half's of 30 mins (60 mins total plus injury time)
The stick is a Hurley (Camán) or Hurl for short (made from an ash tree), the ball is a Sliotar (the inside used to be made of horse hair & the outer skin calf leather, but now the Sliotar is has a cork centre and white tanned pig skin outer). The women (& girls) play Camogie, they are called Camog's. The men (& boys) are called Hurlers.
The Senior All Ireland Hurling Final is usually held on the first Sunday in September (two weeks before the All Ireland Football Final).
Sláinte!
Thanks bud,
I use this video to show my students here in Argentina what Hurling is (some are Ireland-mad). The general consensus is: that it looks cool and very dangerous.
Hurling, rugby, and Australian rules football all need to be televised in America.
You can leave rugby and aussie rules out, just hurling and gaelic football. Not that i have anything against those sports just doing my patriotic duty as an irishman
Hell yeah
AFL is on in America now on fox sports one. Problem is games start at 10:30 pm at the earliest. Most at 1 am or later. There's a new US rugby league called the NRL, just completed its first season.

The ball is actually quite easy to follow. I've watched Lax and found it impossible to know where the ball is because it's hidden in a net somewhere, but in hurling the ball is always visible.
anyone new to hurling just look for this years all Ireland final replay on UA-cam. it's there and in good quality. you will be amazed. i've watched it twice and my team weren't even playing. it's time we start promoting this sport more. it's truly an honest man's game and should be popular worldwide
Wow, and I thought the NHL was fast and dangerous, and demanding!!
And these guys are amateur. They do it for love of the sport and pride in the village/town/county they come from. Wonderful game.

Ok, then I am sorry for my comment.
Cú Chulainn Thank you and yes, I was referring to ice hockey ... NHL specifically, but it is a very tough sport no matter the league. Lifelong NHL fan here.
Angel Deville They are both unique, difficult, and tough in their respective ways, and the rules haven't been softened too much over the years compared to others.

When I played barely no one wore a helmet. I don't know but I think it would take a while getting used to playing with a helmet.
"Hurling hasn't been toned down or tamed "
I'm pretty sure it was tone down when the rules were introduced.
I am here because I was playing trivia om my phone and received a question about what is the fastest game on grass, and it is hurling, but I hear this for the very first time. It looks really cool and dangerous. these guys have balls to play this.
Hurling is a mad game played by madmen ...but we all love it ...there's nothing to compare with a good hurling match....followed by a heartfelt Sliabh na mBan, Rose of Mooncoin, Boolavogue or ''The Banks''. ...these players give us so much ..for small reward......that they may never die!!
hockey on 'roids, I dig it
Just trying to learn about my Irish heritage✌️
Your ancestors would’ve played this in training for war during the Celtic period although it’s obviously not gonna be played like it was during Celtic times they had been safety added cus too many people were getting killed
Helmets just became mandatory last year. Your stick is the biggest protection of all. Some people used to choose not to wear helmets for different reasons, like visibility or keeping their head cool, a lot of the same reasons that competitive cyclists used to forego helmets. But they all came around in the end!
this is rad and if i ever go to Ireland i am 100% going to see it
ITs on in Ireland every weeknd ...
Of course
Goodbye to a great hurler

Wow, Have been seeing alot of this in recent weeks. Looks like an amazing sport.
Those are some NBA three steps those players are taking
+Ronnie Strickland Yes the three step rule is very loosely enforced generally speaking.
+Ronnie Strickland lol it's actually 4 steps the vid is wrong, but even so, there is over-carrying alright. A good ref will keep the game flowing they say :)
I would imagine this sport sees a lot of broken hand and finger bones, probably noses as well.
No broken noses because we have to wear a helmet with a face guard now but lots of broken fingers
Wish that game was here in the states when I was young - I would have loved to have played it.
First time I saw hurling was back when ESPN was a real sports channel, I thought it was awesome . . . and bloody dangerous. Wish we could watch it here in USA.
looks like a lot of potential for extreme pain from that ball.
you dont get hit with the ball that often but you always get a whack in the shin and thats what hurts

Best UA-cam video by far on this amazing sport had the privilege to play for club and school .My dad being from Kilkenny had huge impact on me .Although im from Monaghan i have supported Kilkenny and will continue to support them win lose or draw 😁
Cool looking sport. My only criticism is that I think a nice heavy metal riff would better capture the intensity of the sport rather than the cheesy techno.
Paul TheSkeptic but the goalkeeper... he has the most pointless job in the world
Who else is here from Ksi after everyone was talking about hurling in the comments section?
Not many. The more skilful you are the less you get injured. Its as a junior level that you get injured. At that level you get the crazy fookers that love the game but are crap.
What vid is that?
Mr. Wray160 yes but his recent one
My shaft is minuscule, however yes but his even more recent one
this looks so intense its amazing
Great video!!
God I wish theyd bring this to the US....
There are clubs all over the US, most of which encourage newcomers to come out and try the game.
There is no Time for placing Adds in the game. And the the playtime is too long for the american audience. I think thats why it will never get the attention like baseball or other american games.
captainbackflash a hurling game is 70 minutes. How is that long compared to american football?
2-3 hours for American Football
"the playtime is too long for the american audience."
How?
they should give the goalies some padding because that ball looks like it would hurt like hell if it hit you.
it does hurt like hell, i got knocked out by a hurling ball that my friend hit at me from like 20 yards lol

Anybody else here from Terroriser ??
I would never accept to play this sport without a helmet.
You are not allowed to play without a helmet.but some parts of the video were from atime when it was optional
It's compulsory now to wear helmets.
It’s only in the last 15 years they made it a rule which is nothin compared to the time it’s been played. It’s a valid for safety but it does take away from the tradition. Even some players refused to wear a helmet in the beginning or would discard it during the game.
Hurling is the game of the gods Brad. The greatest of all.

Myron Buzzwannanots Two of the things I really enjoyed when living in Ireland were the hurling and the traditional music.
Man, I wish this game took off in Australia instead of boring cricket and field hockey. And I wish gaelic football took off here instead of Aussie Rules. That way, we would need no ovals, only an abundance of Football sized fields to play loads of Football, Rugby, Rugby League, Gaelic Football and Hurling. We also have the Irish heritage. Hurling: the only other sport that Canadian hockey players can respect.
Great video. I knew nothing about this sport, or that it even existed 5:22 ago. Now I get the gist of it.
