@@michaelhawkinson4180 really? Isn't the ivy league especially harvard supposed to be easier and debt free... considering all the heavy scholarships they give you there and the huge financial aids??
@Sam I disagree, it definitely was not a mistake, he probably put a lot of thought and effort into choosing, obviousily I've known people who got accepted into various ivy league schools, but they choose another place because it's better for them I get what your saying but it's simply not true
Not an Ivy League student, so no bias here, but just stating the truth: Ivies aren't a sure-way ticket to lifelong success once you get in, sure, but most of the people who claim that Ivies are "overrated" or "overhyped" are either ignorant of what Ivy-level educations are like or just trying to rationalize not getting into one ("if I convince myself that they are overrated then I feel better about not getting into one"). Also, most of the Ivies, especially the big boys like Harvard, have endowments in the billions of dollars, and could very well afford to, and do, allow lower-income students full rides.
He wasn't getting a "full-ride." That would mean all expenses would be covered. And that is false. The video literally says even after some addition aid, the family would not be able to cover it all still. Heck, and i'm still wondering if I can afford my last year of college.
A full ride covers tuition and fees, books, room and board, supplies, and sometimes even living expenses. Some awards also cover the costs for study abroad programs. You quoted what she was saying if he went to an Ivy league. You are the false one here.
@Notorious Huh? I could see what you're trying to say, though your reply sounding incoherent, his overall choice NOT picking Ivy saved himself, though, yes, he would've been in tremendous debt.
It's prestige but there are also networking opportunities. You are probably going to school with the kids of the 1%. Call me crazy but that's why parents in NY fall over themselves to get their pre-schoolers in certain schools.
Bro what? If he chose harvard, he would easily be able to pay off the debt in 1-2 years. Especially Harvard medical graduates can make millions in just a couple years.
Makes sense because he can excel in the lower school if he was to go to Ivy League he will compete with other kids in the Ivy League school to go into med school
Sandra Starr Because they have need-based financial aid? Look it up, most ivy leagues have a no loan policy. It costs me less to go to an ivy than my in-state school would have, and I even get a discount at the in-state school because my dad works there
Sandra Starr I assure you got full ride + at every Ivy. All Ivy League schools salivate to get smart black kids like this, they would even overlook credentials that are usually denied from white and Asian kids. Just didn't want to work hard for 4 years.
1989osu I've been working hard at college and at my part-time job. I ask myself every semester, how the heck do I keep up with all of this work? And every semester I ask myself, can I afford to continue? I have one year left. And I have no clue. Colleges are overrated. Its pretty sad how these things are based on the color of people's skin.... No. They did not want to pay for the Ivy. Universities, colleges, Ivy leagues are all the same now or at least heading to the same direction. My university charges just as much as Rutgers. They are well known in the area. and i'm sure it is just the same amount of work. I'm in a class of 25 or less. (1 class has only 5 people). And it is a heck of a lot better than a class with 500.
1989osu Actually, Ivy League schools have some of the biggest grade inflation of any university. It's a lot easier to perform well and get A grades at Harvard for example than it is at other private and state schools. This is because these "elite" private universities attempt to maintain near 100% graduation rates through allowing essentially the entire class to have near perfect grades. The workload, class difficulty, and rigor is less at these schools. If this student was afraid of a difficult workload at a university, he would be better off at an Ivy League.
@@AA-hs4rk open ur browser and search it on google.com.. I'm not gonna explain it to u..it doesn't serve any purpose..all thats gonna happen is that you'll get butthurt and start whining about it
It was similar for me. I’m not this smart, but I was accepted into MIT. Instead I chose to go to a college that was 14k a year. And guess what, I got an internship through school that lead to a job. I’m still with that company 3 years later and making 100k a year. To Clarify for people saying 100k isn’t much. I don’t live in the cities. I live in a rural area where the cost of living is cheap. Id easily get 150k+ if I moved to the cities. I chose to live away from the cities though in a small community.
Their's a thing called financial aid, but kudos to him, everyone dreams of getting into a Ivy League school, but i'm thinking about a lifetime of debt, education is education, you don't need a sticker on your diploma for how smart you are, that's reflected on your GPA.
EDIT: After recently going through the college process myself, I can guarantee that ivies and other "top" colleges are severely overrated, and it's better to attend a school that you feel fits you best. Large universities have less time for each student and don't have to work to maintain their prestige so they don't really care about their students that much. It's important to not dumb yourself down (for example, if you have a 33 ACT you shouldn't go somewhere where the average is a 26) because then you just likely won't fit in with the student body, but you should go where you feel you will be able to have access to opportunities and the help you need if you are struggling in a class. Congrats to this student for proving that he can get into elite universities, and extra congrats for understanding what a scam they tend to be.
He for one didn’t attend it because he wanted to go to medical school, in the US medical school is expensive enough why add an extra financial burden to you by going to a prestigious IVY league that’s really expensive and undergrad is so useless for medical schools. He now goes to Columbia Medical School now so props to him
So why can't he just skip Undergrad? Or is it because that has practically become the new High School: The hurdle you jump through with no real purpose other than to move on with your life.
Wise decision. I went to a public state university over a well-known private school that would've cost me a fortune. At the end of the day, there's only one word for "doctor."
But there are many different salaries for doctors depending on the residency you got into, which is arguably dependent on the prestige of your undergraduate college.
Unless you're super rich, the feeling of saving your parents tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for your education far outmatches the personal benefits of paying for an Ivy League undergraduate degree.
@Sudhir Kakar Generational wealth income disparity plays a role in regards to the differences between average black college grad wealth and average white high school grads in a significant way. Most white highschool graduates come from families of predominantly rural backgrounds that more likely than not own homes as compared to urban background individuals, predominantly black. You also have to take into account certain ethnic groups of blacks, such as Nigerians for example, tend to have higher rates of academic success and income than thier African-American counter parts. Prior to emigration, they are typically wealthier on average as well, coming from affluent backgrounds. If this kid graduates, there is no guarantee he'll be earning less or significantly more, but with scores that high, he'll more than likely be better off financially than the average person here in the US. As for affirmative action, I don't approve of it necessarily, but I can see why someone would support it in hopes of narrowing the disparity, but ironically it only perpetuates systemic inequality.

There's a layer to Ivy Leagues. You don't just get in and it's endgame; it's legitimately stressful being there and trying to join organizations and making friends. Everyone is constantly competing and always striving for more. Ahsante the Artist has a really interesting video about her time at Harvard.
Or don't go to college at all and go a different route to get what you want. That's what I'm doing. I couldn't afford college even though I was accepted to 2 but didn't go because I couldn't afford the costs plus I didn't want to end up in debt. So I said, I'm not going to college. Great going young man and may God bless you as you step out into the world. Hey, you could be President of the United States one day :-). Whatever you decide you are on the right track.
He's setting an example here. Letting others realize going to an Ivy doesn't make you a better person. That puts him high on my list for others to follow.

Didn't mean to create dissention in the ranks about my praise to a young man working with his family so they could afford him going to College. His family would of had to come up with money every month to pay rent, food and any extra living expenses. So staying close to home proves he is truly loving and considerate to his family. Fine, fine young man for going this route. God bless.
I'm crying! 😭 you have to be so kind hearted to go to my state university instead of any Ivy League school just for his parents ! This shows how amazing people can be
He will get a better education this way. They don't educate undergrads at the ivys. The t.a.'s teach almost all the classes, while the faculty does research. The undergrads are simply there to foot the bill. Don't kid yourself- these are private corporations that use their reputation for profit. Nothing more.
Congratulations young man! You are absolutely right, this made my day . As a mom of 4 boys , I was literally in tears at his forethought and maturity. I know you will go far in life 💕🙌
He made that decision because the school he chose gave him a full ride. He’s smart because he won’t have to pay student loans back. Who wouldn’t take the offer for a full scholarship? It’s a “no brainer.” Good for him! ❤️
If he couldn't afford it, he would have gotten a full ride at Ivies too. Students from ivies and other top schools have some of the lowest student loan debt. Ivies are literally cheaper than regular colleges for most people. MIT for example waives off tuition fee and hostel fee and even contributes some amount to food and also allows you to work for them so that you won't have to take a loan if your family income is below 90k.
Loli Lilo being a minority doesn't cut it anymore. I know plenty of minorities who didn't get full scholarships. A real minority who is guaranteed to get full scholarship these days is someone who is black, gay, physically disabled, and mentally disabled. I'm going to make sure my kids have these qualities so I don't have to pay for their tuition. Just kidding.
Watching this after being rejected by BU and Tufts with a 1500 SAT, 4.72 GPA, national merit finalist. I don’t think I’ll ever really get over it but this video helped a little bit.
He clearly said he will be going to graduate school in the future. That would be more loans on top of the ones he would incur for undergrad, even more so if medical school is in his future. The smart choice was to get a full ride for college saving his parents k200 and going Ivy later if needed.

Still processing please wait Processing continue to wait.... Sh@tloads of 💰 and they claim to be non-profit 😂 and don't pay taxes.
@TampaTec: I agree. But then, what do you expect from a school which used chattel slave labor and then barred black people from attending for generations until forced to do symbolic "change" by the civil rights movement? Ivy leagues schools are one of many institutions that got "jumped in" early and which have been riding their preferential status for centuries in some cases. Meanwhile people continue to lecture black people about seeking "free stuff." The day is going to come when most black people realize that they don't need these institutions which have never supported them anyway, or their rubberstamp of approval to "make it."
Truly! He will definitely be seen as humble and not entitled as sadly many humble, bright and driven Ivy League grads get negatively portrayed still as arrogant, entitled and proud.
This pisses me off to no end. Not because of his choice or because it was a financial decision, but because if higher education was free (like everywhere else) he could have gone to any school he wanted without worrying about the debt. But here we are funding proxy wars still. I can’t stand this country sometimes.
This is an incredible decision by a bright and intuitive young man. He evaluated what he thought would be best for his future and to help his parents. This is a level headed person and I look forward to hearing more from him! Congratulations!
This is not a moment of being badass, this is a moment of despair. He didn't reject those schools because he believed their education wasn't as good, he did so because he couldn't afford them
@@kaan8964 And he is wrong. Maybe if you do little bit of research yourself instead of generalising a country of 1.3 billion+ people based on one person you would see that the only way Ivies would cost more than a regular school is if his family is rich.
University is really what you make of it. The people you meet and the opportunities that arise from that is worth as much, if not more than the education itself. We tend to think more is better, but its not always that way. Sometimes its a lot better to be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in a big pond.
He decided to get educated... and ensure his family is financially secure in the process. Paid in full and focused. All he has to be concerned about is educating himself. Everything rests on him now. Not his parents. He is going to be highly educated and have the wisdom to care for people he claim to care about and love as well! He has my full support. Btw.... the people who believe that his decision was stupid. Tell me if every single person who went an Ivy League school came out as great as they hoped? It’s not guaranteed... focus and needed and worrying about your finances can affect that big time! Also if you want him to go so bad. Put your money where your mouth is. Pay the money he needs to go and be successful. Food, boarding, books etc.
@Rithik Reddy exactly. a white girl at my school with *perfect* stats was declined rejected from all her ivys. if you search up affirmative action, you will understand 100% why she was rejected. it’s a bummer.
Sudhir Kakar Lol, imagine trying to make a point and then belittle them along with it. Hard work hard work and hard work. I have known so many incredibly stupid people with high gpa’s because of their worth ethic and incredibly intelligent people with low ones. If that does not prove the point I was trying to make with my previous statement, then leave it at that.
Sudhir Kakar how I interpret it is that GPA is a rough representation, but is not a clear reminder of intelligence. Thus why I agree with Ches, schools have become redundant to the point where one is working hard for a good grade rather than intelligence, and grades are valued more than learning and absorption of teachings.
good for him. college is college whether it’s community private public ivy league etc so it’s about what you should be able to afford should be the priority (sadly)
He’s smart like that. Knows that just because it’s Ivy League doesn’t mean it’s better. It’s better to not be in crippling debt. Plus, Ivy League doesn’t necessarily mean better education than other universities, they just have more prestigious reputation because they have such a high acceptance standard. Also he’s a Drum Major? Absolute respect.
I'm sorry man but that's straight up copium. Even if Ivy League doesn't offer better education the name and prestige will land you better jobs and pay. That by itself makes Ivy League schools better than the rest.
@@vincenth.8709 Unless you're doing a crappy job, it doesn't matter what college you go to. If you're in the medical field, you will always be hired. Most jobs will offer equal pay since no one really cares about what college you went to.
@@vincenth.8709 Many people cope with their insignificant lives by attaining the "prettiest" credentials achievable. Just how many sports cars do you need to make your neighbor envious? And prestige is often associated with the contents of a resume. This begs the question: Do people serve for their community or their ego/status?
no. when you apply, you are supposed to indicate if you will be applying for financial aid and he probably didn't which is why he has to pay the full 200,000 dollar plus
It's sad to me that stories like this are celebrated as wholesome. Here's a young man who was intelligent and driven enough to go to attend any of the most prestigious colleges in the country, but they cost too much to be accessible to him and his family. $200K for a degree is outrageous. I'm sure he got a good education at U of A, but to me this speaks to the need to make all higher education free.
I am so happy that he is extremely aware about real life struggles!!! So sad they didn’t have the means to afford his opportunity at Ivy League schools. Despite it all HE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL AND WILL SUCCEED! Keep up the good work!
I'd just like to clarify some things about colleges. Ivies aren't cheap, but they also offer the most financial aid. For my brother's case, going to an ivy was cheaper than an in-state public school that offered him 10,000$ in financial aid annually. If the kid in the video was really poor, I assure you at least 1 of the ivies offered him nearly a full ride to where he's paying no more than 10k annually. And to people who think ivies aren't really that amazing, the statistics dont lie. The average income of people who graduate from ivies is usually 90k+, which is literally 30k more than the avg. That means you're already paying off ur debt. It also does matter for jobs, ivies give so much more opportunity. When u look at the people at big successful businesses, you see a majority from ivies. Businesses like goldman sachs literally recruit from top-level universities, including ivies plus ppl at like NYU stanford and etc. You dont see ppl from a place like university of alabama. However, im not ragging the guy in the video's choice. A courseload at ivies is REALLY difficult. Kids who make 95+ in all their classes now make averages of B's. Plus, it still is more expensive than alabama. However, ppl must see that ivies really are often worth it.
It's not that shocking, it's a freaking full ride. Whether you're Bill Gates or someone living in poverty, a full ride is someone that only a lunatic would turn down. Baffles me why people are questioning an obvious decision. Plus, he went to Columbia anyways. Hope he's doing well.
@@GrayDaDolf They literally list out in specific amounts how much money they will give people that can't afford it based on their income. The reason so few international students get in is that every single one of these schools is willing to pay 100% of the cost of the international students that get in. Search up MIT common data set and look at the financial aid statistics.
He made a good choice and that shows how intelligent he is. He didn't fall into the pressure of just choosing a popular school while his family struggles to support him through that Ivy League school but weighed all factors and came to a decision. Good for him.
For everyone talking about debt… this kid would’ve got full scholarship at a majority of those schools. 100%. It’s not how hes “smart for avoiding debt” it’s about how he’s smart he chose a school for their academic programs and career options rather than prestige alone. You can go to a “Ivy” league college with a relatively shitty program in your field compared to something like a state college that specializes in it.
I was not graduated from one of the best medical school in my country but I am proud that in my 30 years old age, I am a chief of A&E department from top hospital in my city.
There are schools just as prestigious and amazing such as Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UChicago, Duke, Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, and ETH Zurich
It's strange that this video came back on my feed, because I've been thinking about this and wondering if he's regretting this, or ever knew to regret it. He mainly chose to go to Alabama because he wanted to go to grad school (he was pre-med). If that truly is the only decision, then choosing Alabama could make sense. But that is such a flimsy bet to bank all this on. If he went to Harvard, as a POC, he would've had his pick of top tier investment banking jobs, tech jobs, joined private equity or VC funds, and been making hundreds of thousands of dollars. He could've been at Carlyle, where his bonus would've been his tuition that he saved his parents. He would've gone to class with future CEOs, startup founders, presidents, and had a network of friends that would've taken him and his family to another life. The Ivy League degree really is worth it at the end of the day. He is no doubt smart, but I've seen so many young smart kids confidently make the wrong decision because they didn't have the wisdom of adulthood. Unfortunately, his counselors and parents were never around the Ivy League people, and likely didn't comprehend how good of a life he was giving up by choosing Alabama for a full-ride over a Harvard degree. To them, he was uber successful, and they relied on his confidence, which was the downfall. LUCKILY, it worked out. I looked him up and he went on to complete pre-med studies and is now in medical school at Columbia. At the end of the day, his decision did yield the best result. He got to a great med school, with none of the undergrad debt. I'm beyond happy for him. It would've been a disaster if he decided to change majors, but glad he stuck it through to become Dr. Nelson
I do not like to make assumptions, but I feel as if you've never truly experienced earning a degree at an Ivy League university. My father went to Cornell University for his undergrad but dropped out after three semesters- he transferred to a local college and said that he learned more from the small sized college than in brand-name Cornell. He didn't drop out because it was too difficult, but he felt as if the classes were just... standard. Anyhow, in case you're wondering, he finished his local college degree, met my mother, got a great job that now pays around 115k per year, had two kids :D In conclusion? This boy/man did end up going to Columbia, so any regret he had not attending for his undergraduate degree would've been cancelled out, essentially. He got to get real, solid education AND a brand name graduate degree of a lifetime! Smart kid.
I agree with you He's very very lucky he stuck through with his plans and it all worked out for him The Network and oppurtunities that are available at an Ivy league or some the UC'e is unmatched
I would point out that many of the benefits that you are talking about transfer very differently to BLACK students (not just POC). At ivys they experience a lot of discrimination so their opportunities will often be less than that of their white peers. The University of Alabama is an HBCU so that probably had some effect on his choice.
I met an army guy at my blue collar job in retail during college. This guy ended up being the smartest guy I ever met and was given a free ride to an ivy league school based on his math score alone. Probably one of the most real, down to earth person I met. They were lucky to have him. He couldn't afford college, but he was brilliant none the less.

808 Lana He'd be I. Debt for the rest of his life trying to pay off an Ivy League school. Why do that to himself?
He's smart for not following such superficial college hierarchy and going into debt.

Sudhir Kakar r u dumb
Cole Windhorst 😭😭😭👌🏾💯

That was such a selfless act. He thought about his parents financially. Good kid. He will make it far
“Sweet Home Alabama”
His a black kid, so he can see through the BS. Good on him, and God bless his family for giving him the right tools. Well done son!!!
Duarua Tolu why does it matter with his skin Color
@@cocraine because he's black
otti Fish and what’s wrong with that
That student later went on to become 44th US presadent Brack Obama. God bless him. Truly a profound man .
I am so happy that he is extremely aware about real life struggles!!! So sad they didn’t have the means to afford his opportunity at Ivy League schools. Despite it all HE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL AND WILL SUCCEED! Keep up the good work!
i hope he's crushing it wherever he is.
This man got a 4.58 gpa and had a very high sat scores, even conduct a all band.So I guess he crushing that’s school very easy like it was nothing.
He is 100% right. You can get just as good an education and you get out of it what you put into it.
The college doesn’t reject him, he rejects them
I'd just like to clarify some things about colleges.
Because he would get a full ride at ivies too if he can't afford it. Ivies are cheaper than regular colleges for most people.
@@SidPil source?
@@GrayDaDolf their respective websites
@@SidPil that's a first party source tho
@@GrayDaDolf They literally list out in specific amounts how much money they will give people that can't afford it based on their income. The reason so few international students get in is that every single one of these schools is willing to pay 100% of the cost of the international students that get in. Search up MIT common data set and look at the financial aid statistics.
Community college buddies where you at ? !
He made a good choice and that shows how intelligent he is. He didn't fall into the pressure of just choosing a popular school while his family struggles to support him through that Ivy League school but weighed all factors and came to a decision. Good for him.
And for that poor choice he made, we don't hear about him no more
Why is this in the news? Leave him alone, its his decision.
Its just BC most people would sell their left arm to get into "prestigious" schools like ivy league
Maybe he wanted to do the story about it.
Shut up go make some rice

So sad to see money getting in the way of smart educated people that could bring benefits to society...
He’s basically like Spock... declining offer, live long and prosper
He made the right choice. He is a very bright young man, he will find success wherever he goes. Prestigious school or not.
I was not graduated from one of the best medical school in my country but I am proud that in my 30 years old age, I am a chief of A&E department from top hospital in my city.
Was it u of m

Such a humble guy, nothing but mad respect for Ronald✊🏻
There are schools just as prestigious and amazing such as Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UChicago, Duke, Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, and ETH Zurich
Frank Underwood fact..
Frank Underwood isn't Stanford a Ivy League? Lol but yea tots
jalenroc rich No. Stanford is no Ivy League School. However, it is ranked as high as the Ivy leagues. Even outranking some of them..
Bethel Adiele oh snap lol
University of Notre Dame is really good as well
I'm just not understanding how he didn't get any good money from the schools considering Harvards financial aid thing is so freakin good...
Race
Mech Bostick Race got him accepted getting under 2300 on the SAT does not get you money for Harvard.
Mary Perry what???
Mary Perry evidence??
the dankest ???
He is now doing an MD at Columbia so he really did save those 200,000 USD without losing anything in terms of opportunities
The man is seriously humble. If I get into an Ivy League school, I'm going to an Ivy League school
He’s spot on take the free education for your undergrad
If they really wanted him they would have payed for EVERYTHING he's smart though
He didn't drop out because it was too difficult, but he felt as if the classes were just... standard.
Anyhow, in case you're wondering, he finished his local college degree, met my mother, got a great job that now pays around 115k per year, had two kids :D
In conclusion? This boy/man did end up going to Columbia, so any regret he had not attending for his undergraduate degree would've been cancelled out, essentially.
He got to get real, solid education AND a brand name graduate degree of a lifetime! Smart kid.
Also, sorry if that came off the wrong way! I'm glad we both agree that, in the end, this guy got the best out of the situation.
I agree with you
He's very very lucky he stuck through with his plans and it all worked out for him
The Network and oppurtunities that are available at an Ivy league or some the UC'e is unmatched
I would point out that many of the benefits that you are talking about transfer very differently to BLACK students (not just POC). At ivys they experience a lot of discrimination so their opportunities will often be less than that of their white peers. The University of Alabama is an HBCU so that probably had some effect on his choice.
@@willianalee6336 Bama is not an hbcu. They had their first black student in the 1950s. For reference they were founded before the civil war began
I met an army guy at my blue collar job in retail during college. This guy ended up being the smartest guy I ever met and was given a free ride to an ivy league school based on his math score alone. Probably one of the most real, down to earth person I met. They were lucky to have him. He couldn't afford college, but he was brilliant none the less.
it's sad that with that intelligence and humble attitude of his, he couldn't go to college cuz of poverty😢 Hopefully he gets to finish univ at some point in his life
@Alexa Hsu he did finish college and ended up being hired by a big wall street firm as a quantitative researcher. Basically, he won in life.
