Mine is 2011 Ford Explorer. It happened today at work. Husband told me to unhook the battery and put it back 15 seconds later. It Reset everything and it works perfectly
My car is parked, idle for weeks now as a result of this problem. We do not have dealerships like you all have there. Same model as yours. I am looking for another car.
Recall 15N01 performed on 09/06/16 - - Steering Gear Internal Failure - - Replaced Steering Gear Assembly and Adjusted Toe (Alignment). Hopefully that will be the end of it but I will keep you posted if Power Steering Failure returns
Ford explorer 2013 XLT, I had the same problem a year ago, I turned off the car and turned it on again, it worked normally, however, yesterday it happened again multiple times when I was returning home, every time the steering stopped working the electrical part and came back in a few seconds oscillating until get home.
Mines same locked up in drive way few times its at ford today getting a new one $2000 fix but its recalled they have to replace it but some people are having issues with their local dealer replacing it. Mines 2012 xlt at 197k and they are still replacing it! Btw anyones interior lights or gear shit lights out?

My 2014 Explorer Limited with 65K miles did this same thing last week. I drove home without power steering, called Ford and they wouldn't cover it under the recall that goes up to 2013 model. I told them my manufacture date was 11/2013 but they said it was VIN specific only, not covered. I started the car the next morning and no warning lights and PS back to normal and hasn't happened since. My question is, is this going to likely fail for good in the future or can this be a fluke and just keep resetting itself? The repair is over 2 grand so I don't know if I should keep the car or get rid of it before it has complete failure. Any thoughts?
muhanned700 It was covered by the manufacturer's standard warranty. If you are past the 60k, be prepared to pay $150 for the diagnostic + $150 for the refkashing of the ECU (which should be covered by Ford I think).
I will never buy a Ford car again. Our 2012 power steering gave out Oct 7th on the Ford Explorer. The customer service at Ford is terrible and they won't help at all. Preparing for a battle.
2014 xlt it happen today. Turned it on this morning and message was on and wheel was lolcked. Restart the vehicle and it was solve. Curious if it will come back or lock while driving. U all b safe.
@@MrKike1313 My issue happened to be the power steering, I had it in for a recall and I think they broke it. I had to fight to have them fix it. My friend has a different car but she said the same thing happened to her . Don't you just love electronics. Our air conditioning blew and I thought I'll just wind down the windows instead of shelling out 3 grand. Well with the electronics it sent message that the charging system is bad and power steering and brakes went out this time. Needless to say I had that fixed and blocked the back and cost 2 grand instead. For some reason the gas tank started to leak around the seal, that cost another grand. It was a great car until the last few years , I am driving around a money pit. I would sell it but I don't want to spend 45,000. 😢
Have a 2013 Explorer Sport and it’s junk. Will not be buying another Ford. Not even exaggerating when I say it’s been in the shop over 10 times in 3 years for various problems.

Are they still fixing?
This worked! I was terrified that it wouldn't but it did! Saves me a mechanic's visit!

Did they replace the steering gear assembly for free of charge?
At the time, my Explorer had less than 60K miles so it was covered by the manufacturer's standard warranty
Has it happened again or did it get fixed
Our 2012 explorer is doing same thing, and we are in the North County San Diego Thank you for posting!
How do you repaired yuor problem?
My explorer 2012 did the same... But after a week of random failure and resoultion, the power steering is permanently faulty now
did it get fixed now? how did it get fix?
Same. I’ve had it fixed 4 times. I can’t afford another 2 grand! What can you do?

Just went through this last week. 2012 with 197,000. Recall expired in 2022 and ford refuses to fix it.
I have a 2013 that it did the same thing and the mechanic said it was the racking pinion
I’m having this problem now, first time ever. Can I still drive it until I get it fix soon??
Lynn Rushing I don’t recommend that
