    Can't speak for the Aero 40s but I purchased a pair of Aero 50s. Very very nice looking wheels. The hubs are truly works of art, they also spin very good. The rim profile is almost bulb shaped, very blunt. The down side, almost impossible to mount a tire on them. The tires were Vittoria Zaffirio 25s training tires. These came off other rims so it's not like they were brand new. I felt as though I was going to crack or break the rims. I thought to myself, if I'm having this many headaches mounting them now I cannot imagine doing this on the open road when I get a flat. They promptly went back in the box and returned. Very sad because I really wanted to like and try these wheels. And yes, my wheels did not have the UCI approved sticker on them or anywhere on the box or paperwork

      Thanks for sharing the review of your Aero 50s, Mike. In my second video ua-cam.com/video/Wb73si7WD-k/v-deo.html - a full inspection of the Aero 40s, I install and remove a tubeless Hutchinson tire by hand showing that it can be done. That's at right around the 19:30 time. It's too bad it was so difficult for you to mount tires on the ICANs you got. Appreciate your comment and feedback on the wheels. Thank you.

    I've had a set of Aero 50s for a year. Still remarkably true. Probably about 4000 miles on them. Mine are the disc brake version, but I've ordered another set for my rim brake bike. Great customer service also.

    Excellent video. If they deliver the wheels with the level of "trueness" and roundness as the one you demonstrate, for sure are top quality wheels. I suppose the provider mailed you a "hand picked" pair of flawless wheels. ;-)

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  5 років тому +1

      They weren't flawless, Braulio, but they were pretty good. Please see my complete inspection video here where I show the issues I found, mainly the aero spokes being turned into the wind. ua-cam.com/video/Wb73si7WD-k/v-deo.html Thanks for the comment!

    hello Jim,
    I have a set of Ican Aero 55 disc wheelset.
    I'm happy with it too.
    But I'm now thinking about buying a Roval Rapide CL 2 wheelset...
    Do you think that would be progress?
    or do you think the difference won't be big?
    Thank you for your help.
    Many greetings Jens

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching and the question Jens, nice to meet you. Roval wheels have an excellent reputation and I've worked on and ridden them a bit. They're nicely spec'd and built. They're very similar in build to the ICANs you have making it hard to say if you'd notice much of a difference. As far as I can tell comparing the wheelsets online the ICANs are about 200 grams lighter than the Rovals and if I got that number right, that will probably be the thing you're most likely to feel. But, it's possible that differences in the rim profiles and carbon construction might make a significant difference in ride quality too. The only way to tell for certain is to test ride the Rovals, which might be possible through Roval or Specialized or one of their dealers. Hope this is helpful. If you get the Rovals I'll be interested to hear what you think.

    Have you had a chance to ride them? I would be especially interested to know about the hubs? I have a 55mm ICAN wheelset with Novatec hubs that I am very happy with it...have put at least 20,000km on it without any issues. They now do a similar set with the same hubs as those in your wheelset and I am very tempted to upgrade! 1381g claimed weight for a 55mm deep section wheel sounds fantastic but almost too good to be true. Wonder if they are as stiff as my older wheelset...

      Thanks for the review of your ICAN wheelset, Tecno - great to hear they are holding up so well. I should be riding my test set later this week. I'm curious to see how the ICAN hubs hold up, too.

    Thanks for the ican road bike carbon wheelset review. How did the ican-branded hub perform? They advertise as you mentioned these are for 10/11 speed cassettes. Would these work for 8 speed too?

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  3 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting pdbike. The hubs have been great and I have about 2K miles on them. You can probably google and find someone who has found a way to put an 8 speed cassette on these modern ICAN hubs - otherwise you’ll want to upgrade to 10/11 speed. Hope this helps.

The REAR wheel drive side is also radially laced and the non drive side is cross-2. I hope this helps and thanks for watching and the comment.

    What about the hub bearings vs ceramic ones ? Thanks

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  5 років тому +5

      Thanks for the question, "pedoncule36." The ICAN hubs have "standard sealed bearings" (steel ball bearings). Ceramic ball bearings are more expensive and I don't believe they're an option on the ICAN hubs, though you can sometimes upgrade hubs yourself by purchasing the correct size aftermarket ceramic sealed ball bearings and pressing them into the hub (through a bearing company, such as Enduro www.endurobearings.com/ ). But, you want to make sure there are exact replacement bearings available. Ceramic bearings are lighter than steel and can be more durable (won't rust). Plus, they are claimed to make the wheels spin with even less friction. I have ceramic bearings in one set of race wheels. I like to believe they're faster rolling because they were expensive, but I can't actually feel a difference between them and my wheels with standard steel bearing. Hope this helps, Jim

    Question: do those decals come off or are they under a clearcoat?

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  5 років тому

      It's hard to be sure, "Trel." The logos feel more like paint than decals to me. If they are decals, they are stuck to the carbon fast. I don't see or feel a clear coat. You can feel the edges of the logos, so there is probably a way to get them off, but I can't guarantee it.

    Jim, hey there my name is Daniel I was asking b4 about wheels on ebay.. that said I couldnt find something with that just best for its value wheel so I bought a pair of these aero 40s ur a great salesperson jk... but there being shipped man I paid 720 for shipping and retail price I think ur video gave me peace of mind that ik gonna get some thing that maintained will be a great investment and last long the 2 yrs warranty ain't bad either... I am gonna get the wheels looked at by maybe a bike shop or something first before they go on bike I'm just gonna ask them if the spoke tension is good and the spoke twist cuz all other tests did pretty good... I watch each vid about these.... lastly if u were me cuz I never bought 700 dollar wheels I have a pair of mavic aksium one for like a 150 on my bike is there some tools I should buy or like anything as a wheel guy u can advice me about... I might invest in getting some spoke wrench tools the ratchet and the vice one like u had... so I can twist them if need be... but yeah I'm pretty fricken stoked!!! God bless!!!

      Hi Daniel, I think since you said that you're going to have the wheels checked by a bicycle shop - that you should ask them to show you a few basic tools you might want to start your wheel toolkit with. I would recommend a spoke wrench and the aero spoke holder as a start. I mention those tools in the description and the bike shop should be able to show them to you and probably sell them to you, too. Have fun on your new wheels!

      @@JimLangley1 thx for the reply... so I went in a local shop they said it lookd okay didn't take much time looking at the spoke tension he just threw them on the wheel truing stand to.see if they were true I mean I did that on the bike... not too helpful since he was an older guy and I didn't spend too much time in there hes good but yeah I may go to another bike shop yeah to get that spoke wrench and the other tool is for sure on my list and basically just watching youtube videos slash trial and error to get the hang of the truing at house he did say... since ur not gonna be able to buy those spokes at local shop you should take time and order a few more for back up so when u need it they'll be there so... I rode first time today cuz I was out of town. With new gp5000 28mm tires and the aero 40s when I took it around the block I didn't do a long sesh they felt good and I felt a difference in its durability compared to smaller rim aluminum rim which is pretty normal so yeah I'm still excited more of the cosmetics it brings to the bike I ride a black cannondale caad 10 with black ican wheelset it looks pretty awesome however I'm never about the fashion I'm always who knows the function the drivetrain the bearing the durability of the bike is key who cares what it looks like but ahh...yeah man truly just wishing you a pretty sweet Christmas and 2020 is literally like a month away holy cow this decade is coming to a close just think upon the last 10 years and remember the good times and just be you that's what I'm gonna do angways... thx Jim!!!

    GREAT VIDEO, I SE ON THE WEBSITE THAT THEY CLAIM THAT THEY ARE UCI APPROVED. HOWEVER IF I GO TO PURCHASE A SET OF WHEELS THE PRICE IS £54,482,179.10. WITH A WEBPAGE THAT THROWS THIS PRICING MISTAKE UP AND VERY LITTLE MENTION IN THEIR DESCRIPTION OF UCI APPOVED IM SCEPTICAL. OTHER UCI WHEELSETS THAT ARE APPROVED BY MANUFACTURERS SUCH AS HUNT WHEELS IN THE UK BRAG ABOUT IT AND SO THEY SHOULD. DOES THE CERTIFICATE WITH THE WHEELSET COME WITH OFFICIAL WHEELBUILDING UCI DOCUMENTATION THAT YOU MIGHT EXPECT. VERY CHEAP WHEELS IF THIS ALL IS TRUE

    • @JimLangley1
      @JimLangley1  5 років тому +1

      Hi Chris, I have never seen an official UCI Certification, so it's possible that you're right. I was taking ICAN at their word and also I thought that if they had not received UCI Cert that the UCI would not allow them to advertise it. Someone else commented about a super high price showing. I have tried their website many times now and have never seen that error so I don't know what's going on. From the many positive comments, though, I believe they are taking good care of customers. I hope this is helpful. Thanks for the comment! Jim
