Tyres!!!!!!!! Don't know why but I love painting them, always have.. I can't give you an exact technique as I ad lib on every single one, but I never paint them in a solid colour. I will keep adding small blotches/ mottles of dark brown, dark blue & dark greens. Always Tamiya for that very flat look..

That’s great to hear, it’s a hobby anyone can enjoy. Just don’t start with this kit! Grab some Tamiya 1/48 aircraft. Much easier to start with and enjoy

Great job. Well done. Long ago, in another lifetime, I collected Airfix models, but they were all 1/72 scale.
On the subject of the Typhoon, two months ago, I got up close and personal with a real Napier Sabre. My gods! That engine is a monster!

The problem and the challenge with all 1/24th scale aircraft (Not just Airfix) is before it is finished you will have had to re-engineer the crap out of them so that all the sub-assemblies fit properly together. But having said that, I wish 1/24th scale had as many choices as 1/72nd scale does, as I have built all of them but four, mainly because I refuse to pay over $150.00 US for a toy that could feed me for a week. My life long hobby has become to expensive to justify any longer.

I hope to make a worthy effort that the Airfix kit deserves.

A great video by a great Builder! What great work here! To those that commented about Airfix, all companies even Tamiya have their good kits and lesser ones. Sometimes just older tooling re released is the cause. I have always been very impressed with Airfix 1/24 WWII Plane kits, fabulous detail! I just built 1/48 P40B, and it was a very clean and well detailed kit. it even has one piece Prop! That's more than I can say about Tamiya Spitfire and P-51 D. Those have those stupid individual prop blades! A one piece prop is going to be within close tolerances, unlike where you put each blade in separately!

What a great idea to have the model as a "restoration"! Inspired choice and makes for a very interesting look. I love this aircraft and would be afraid to touch it in this scale. As you say, a "little" detailing at this level leads you down the rabbit hole! Superb job.

i think the defects you out line in this kit and the add detail you have gone to to compensate have added so much depth that i can only see it as a benefit and the results speak for them selves. outstanding work love to see more in this scale. i am just getting back into modeling at age 55. and the level of detail required in this scale has me sucked in, your build has given me inspiration to attempt having a go at 1/24. scale. and will be watching for more info in adding extra detail and the techniques used to achieve the excellence you display.

Something new I tried on a model that worked out was using a hypodermic needle to create weld bead son 1:48 aircraft. I was building an Airfix Stuka a year back which had the option of leaving the engine open. The engine was not as detailed as I would have liked it to be so I decided to modify it... a lot.
To the point. I scribed out lines where I wanted weld beads to be and mixed a tiny bit of tamiya putty with tamiya titanium silver. I used the needle like a caulking gun to apply the 'putty paint' into the groove and used my hobby knife to create a texture. In the end the effect turned out epic and I have used it since. Not many aircraft have many visible weld beads so having them in some areas really draws attention to the area. It DOES NOT work with 1:35 vehicles. It looks disgusting in the wrong scale.

Although I now have a grey airforce, I haven't modelled an aeroplane for over forty years, (sculpting model figures instead),. Bu
T when I was younger I quite happily cut away panels to put in extra detail and control wires etc.
Now I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do in 1:48 scale?

Well you asked for opinions on Airfix models. I started making them in the mid 1960's. The smaller 1/72 subjects came in a plastic bag with the instructions stapled over the end of the bag. i don't think in those days they were ever meant to be super accurate scale models. they were for youngsters to make good representations of famous aircraft and tanks. I see the release date of the Typhoon as 2014 so to me it should have pretty reasonable moulding and not bad flash or mould misalignment. Then again I think they are cheaper than a lot of competitors. To me Wingnut Wings is the other end of the spectrum. I now tend to stick in the middle around the Tamiya standard.

Hi from the UK , Model Guy.
Great and insightful vid as usual mate. I like your tips and schemes for getting the best from a kit. I was especially interested in how you do your tyres. Personally I also use various shades of black and dark grey but I don't airbrush at all. I find that brush painting gives me a finish that looks the business. The hubs I do airbrush but the tyres I like to go old school brush.
Thanks for all the great vids mate.

I love the Typhoon, I just think they look sharp. I have a large RC Hawker Tempest with a 50” wingspan hanging in my living room. Of course the Tempest is the newer more advanced version of the Typhoon but I love both and they are not as appreciated as much as I think they should be.

Hah I grew up (in the uk) on Airfix kits in the 70’s and early 80’s. I thought they were the top standard and having to correct fit and remove flash on the moulds was normal! The best part was working from photos of real aircraft in my books. Now in my fifties (in the US) would like to get back into it and build a couple of planes for my son. Have built a couple of muscle cars from Revel. Would you guys say Tamiya is the way to go? I can’t justify 300 bucks on a kit like this but appreciate all the techniques you show. Fascinating stuff. Cheers 🤙🏼

    • @TheModelGuy

This kit is a known mojo buster, and for a new kit the mould lines and I’ll fitting parts such as undercarriage struts and engine parts would suit a revell kit from the 70’s.
Only good thing about the kit is the fuselage and detail on the wing surfaces all that riveting and options of how you want to display it with open panels. But other than that if you aren’t a confident model builder avoid at all costs.

    • @TheModelGuy
      @TheModelGuy  4 роки тому +1

The detail is well done on the outer bits. You can see stressed skin, rivets look good...except the ones that are near the top and bottom of the curve that are mashed.

Lovely work on a kit that does need work. Have not built any large Airfix for a while. I think the new Hellcat is a way better kit than this and infinitely better than the original 70s stuff. I wish they would look at re-engineering some of them as its nice to occasionally do something that large.
