Greg's just awesome.. He's got a great way to teach me n others im sure how to play really better being well aware of taken time to learn more than just a song.
Hey Greg - Thanks for your notes and tips on the king of funk bass, Rocco Prestia and TOP. Must have been a BLAST to play in a TOP cover band. I appreciate your dedication to teaching bass. I look forward to each or your lessons. Keep up the great groovs....
Thanks Dennis. Yes, the TOP cover band was such good fun (once I'd learnt all the parts!) and we had a full horn section which made it even better. Great that you are enjoying all the GBS lesson and thanks for leaving the positive comment.
Thanks Tom, glad you liked the lesson. I loved making this one although I only had a few days try and give the bass lines some justice before releasing the video!
Great videos, I can actually learned note by note the way you taught in this video (Funk The Dumb Stuff). Rocco was one of the first bassist that opened my ear to the instrument....here I am 28 years as a bass player and secretly I play TOP (I play in a Mexican Band occasionaly). Over the years I developed some okay speed in fingers and have learned by ear to the best I can hear "Souled out, Diggin on James Brown, Gotta Make a Change, and You're Still a Young Man. I have a Tobias Growler for about 20 years but I recently purchased the Stingray 5 HH and I feel like I got a new pair of glasses for my ears, almost like I have been running with a 20 K back pack and now I took it off. RIP Rocco.
Glad you like the lesson and thanks for your message. Rocco was such a fine and unique player. It is so hard to get near playing like he did. I bet your new Stingray sounds great. I need a Stingray in my collection! Have fun with your new bass.
I like this video very much Rocco is one of my great favorite bass players and i like his funky way of playing. Playing 16th notes so fast is a big challange for me and playing a few songs like these in a set, my fingers getting slower it is hard to keep up. Do you have any suggestion to improve my finger style Thanks a lot .I enjoy your videos they are very useful Cheers John.
Hey John, I'm glad you like this video. I love the Tower Of Power stuff and sometimes use to play in a Tower Of Power tribute band with full brass section. That was a seriously finger workout, especially when lots of solos were played on the faster tunes! Funny you ask about how to increase speed as that is what my lesson is about this Saturday. Look out for that (No.208) which should help you I'm sure!
I love your videos, But! go too Tiny Desk and Check the first track they play, in their session, that bass line is awesome by their new bassist, Salute to you two. Stay Amazing
Thanks for this Greg. Not heard of this bassist before, but something I'll be looking into. One question for you is how come you prefer Lakland basses to Fenders ?
Jon Swift in that case check out the Very Best If Tower Of Power - The Warner Years as it’s got all their hits on it. Back when I use to play on Jersey Boys, I got some basses on a deal with Lakland. This is before they were big over here in the UK. They are very well built instruments and both of mine have amazing necks. I did replace the pickups to particular ones that I wanted. Fender are great too. I would love an old one. They can be a bit hit and miss nowadays though. You still get some great ones, but I feel you don’t have to restrict yourself to Fenders nowadays.
Jon Swift I changed the pickups on this Lakland P-bass to Bare Knuckle Pickups. They are a British company that specialise in making vintage sounding pickups. I just love the sound of them and have Bare Knuckles on 3 of my basses.
Niall's Bass Tones it’s only when you try to play Rocco’s bass lines that you realise how hard they are! I am just setting up the teeshirts with a printer at the moment. Then I will put the details on my Merchandise Page: gregsbassshed.com/merchandise Hopefully this will be sorted in a couple of weeks.
Hi Rollie, bass gets easily lost if you are listening on small speakers, especially the ones in phones or iPads. I suggest listening to this video using headphones or decent speakers then you’ll hear the bass fine.
If you are listening on your phone, your speakers maybe on the way out! It’s loud and clear this end. Try with headphones or through speakers as bass can sometimes get lost on small speakers.
Good work sir! Lovin' it!
Brooksy's Bass Corner cheers! I realised a little way into making this lesson that my ‘Lockdown chops’ aren’t good enough for playing Rocco! 😂
@@GregsBassShed don't worry, just get the content out there. If it gets people interested, all the better! Rock on!
Brooksy's Bass Corner good point! Glad you liked the video.
One of the best ever music teacher despite a genius like Rocco, if i had a teacher like you i would have been a better musician that i am onestly

Didn't know he passed away! Legend bassist, will be missed! RIP
Very true. Over a year now since Rocco left us.
Thanks for this post! Grateful for UA-cam!
No problem, glad you liked it.

Thanks Billy, maybe because I'm self-taught on bass I can remember very well the challenges I went through!
Excelente transcripción y mucho mejor explicación, a ponerlo en práctica, saludos
Muchas gracias. Diviértete tocando las líneas de bajo, ¡algunas de ellas son complicadas! 😀

Definitely, Rocco was a big influence on anyone into funk I reckon!
