  • This is the method im using lately to create snare, rim-shots and percussions for drum and bass & dubstep tracks. An easy setup with lots of knobs to tweak for different timbres.

For some reason, most tutorials on how to make snares omit the detail that white noise should come into play with a slight delay and that this is what makes the drum punchy. And this isn't really an obvious detail and I would mention it though.

I would say it depends on the drum sound. ducking the noise on the transient is only audible when the snare is longer anyway. in my case or in my tunes the snares are very short mostly and i like the noisy attack. i dont think its something you have to do at all costs and on every snare.

@@PolarityMusic definitely. I myself rarely use this technique. However, when I made music in drum and bass style (non-liquid) and tried to synthesize snares, nothing worked for me until I came across a tutorial from the artist Au5 who mentioned this point. I just think that it would be nice to voice this at least for an extra few seconds of the video, this might be a really useful point for someone. Well, maybe I'm wrong.
this delay is also an important tool in drum creation and can also be played with in different ways

Esnare requires an update with that knowledge plus allpass filter modulation for more timbres. Indeed rimshots are clipped sinewaves.

Have been diving back into Machinedrum, that machine really shows you how various drum sounds are synthesized. It has a unique and quite digital sound, but there is an ‘analog’ style percussion synth with various instruments (it’s a bit like syntakt v1.0). And those instruments are totally tutorials for synthesizing classic percussion.

Obviously you don’t need it @soundcore, sounds like you already know. But for folks looking into the details of percussion synthesis, finding videos about the TRX machines could be very helpful. (Maybe i should make a video going in depth on them, oof)

Beautiful sounds. This area has been a weak spot in my synthesis knowledge and I greatly appreciate this tutorial. Can't wait to try pulse waves and osc sync in my drum synthesis.

Oscillator Sink also has a bunch of great videos on ‘turning synthesizers into drum machines’, aka percussion synthesis. But really, a modular system like the grid, vcv, eurorack or softube modular are the best for custom percussion synthesis. (If it seems like a pain, softube’s drum synthesis plugin Heartbeat is fantastic too.)

Hello. Do you remember the video with Reason Object emulation? Is it possible to make it as an effect? Imagine bass with a metallic crunch. It seems like it should be cool.

Good point...physical modeling for drums would sound a little more "organic", but you could build something like that in The Grid. I remember Polarity going in depth on how to create something like that.

For pitch mod I wonder if it would be better to modulate the sync amount instead. Might be a bit more subtle, idk. Gotta try it when I'm on a computer with Bitwig installed.

I tried it and I don't know if it's better, but I definitely got some very punchy snares.
