  • Learn how to introduce yourself in te reo Māori using our simple format:
    1. Your name
    2. Where your ancestors come from (if you want to or can)
    3. Where you live
A mihi (or mihimihi) is an introduction which can take place at the beginning of a gathering or meeting. It is used to establish links with other people present and let people know who you are, and where you come from. Being able to introduce yourself in te reo Māori is a helpful tool that we can all use and begin to normalise.

The presenter on this video is great however as a beginner learning Maori its hard to follow the fast pace information without much explanation.

Hey, what do I do if where I come from is... Kind of complicated? I was born in south Africa in a place that is now called Polokwane, but my ancestry is very unclear (white, but I don't know much other than there's a lot of Irish, some English REALLY far back, and some Boer, but also my estranged family sometimes talked about family members maybe having other heritage, but... They're all coastal south Africans, it could be anything, and I don't know if it's in my line. Ancestry data for that part of the world is terrible, so I wouldn't be able to use a DNA test and get a reliable answer even if I wanted that invasion of privacy). My family immigrated to Sydney, but then to Brisbane. Which parts of the this would be the relevant ones?

As a pakeha New Zealander, is it safe to say I’m from Aotearoa, or should I say Ireland/England?

It dosen´t matter what you say as the nativs will still blame you for colonizing their country and blame you for all of their troubles and hardships.

This is such a great video - but it seems not to play properly? The picture doesn't load anymore for me anyway.

I had the same issue when I first put the video on. I clicked the little cog settings icon on the video and the display was set to 480, so I changed it to 1080HD and it worked right away :)
