- Temminck's tragopan display, this beautiful pheasant found across Northern Asia has an extraordinary courtship display, using a log or visual obstruction between the female tragopan, the male creeps in and inflates the hidden horns and throat lappet and pumps himself up to suddenly appear over the log to the female who is nearby. These displays are often abandoned if the female is not in the perfect position to view the display and I have observed several tragopan species tapping the log or flicking leaves to attract the female bird’s attention before the male begins the full display.

This is a captive male that I have kept for 8 years, his name is Siegfried :D

Yes it is incredible, the display happens so quickly and I've observed several consecutive displays in a row (if the female tragopan stays in the same place and the male bird does not try and chase her after the first display 😄)
I can tell with the red white and blue he's voting for Trump!
That shade of blue is MESMERIZING!💙
It is. Sadly the video does not do the colour justice, in reality it is a very deep mid blue, just stunning

Personally I was impressed that a bit of skin could start out so small, yet grow into something so large, colorful, and majestic!

Amazing how much control he has over that skin flap, how he slowly inflates and then deflates it on command. When he rears up like that, what a glorious sight, no doubt inspired countless myths among people who witnessed this in prehistoric times
The tragopans, and all the rest of the land fowl, are such insane and underrated animals, truly some majestic, ornate, gaudy little dinosaurs! Thank you for this stunning video
Thank you, he has an amazing amount of control. During the display season, he often inflates just the lappet and gives it a shake before it recedes, i think this is to keep it in good trim for when he has exactly the right conditions to display.
There are a couple of other Tragopan species displaying on the channel including my favourite, the Cabot's tragopan which I recorded in slow-motion, do check them out

I am obsessed with the diversity of life and I love these channels documenting local fauna (and biota in general), but they seem so hard to find. Thank you for taking the time to reply; I am curious about what you feed your tragopans. I happen to have done some research on Galliform diets and wild tragopan diets seem to be 95% herbivorous or more overall, but this fluctuates a little with seasons and some insect consumption is likely still important. Either way, you must be doing something right because they are incredibly healthy looking

@@jonathanpointer9578 anytime I'm watching a nature show, birds always seem to steal the show lol. I am always impressed with not only their attention to detail, but their unique mating dances. With so many countless species you'll never get bored!

One of the most amazing animals. If we compare how much variation a life form can creation with its body - this bird sure is up amongst the most unique. It reminds me of the peacock jumping spiders.And such a combination of colors.
Yes, Peacock jumping-spiders are so colourful. The colours are amazing but also just the right shade of red as, in shade and deeper cover, he is well camouflaged from predators yet out in the open and good light, he really stands out for his display and I suspect that blue of horns and lappet must be quite a visual statement even in dark, thick cover when he displays

Now that I've learned their names, I have just been watching more and more videos of these remarkably beautiful Tragopans!
They are incredible birds, 5 species of Tragopan, Temmincks, Cabot's, Satyr, Blyth's and Western Tragopan, all look very different and each has a different sized lappet when displaying

It’s feather patterns honestly remind me of a flame. And for a bird, they look very alien looking.

All the famous clothing designers in the world put together could never outdo and create the variety and beauty of what The Creator has done for the animals and insects of the world. What a spectacular display to behold. There are so many incredibly beautiful birds and it would be so hard to choose the most gorgeous but for me after a fine display The Peacock wins by a feather. Every square inch of it's body is adorned by the metallic, brightly colored and delicate feathers I've ever seen. Thank you Jonathan Pointer for enlightening us with yet another fine display of God's beautiful creativity. Simply gorgeous.
Thank you, it is a beautiful bird and the display is un expected and wonderful. The Peacock is amazing, every inch designed to impress, another amazing pheasant is the Himalayan Monal- another bird whose metallic feathering seems to reflect ever colour of the rainbow

I didn't think it was physically possible to have a bib that pulls down like that and then retracts. And the electric blue against the orange makes him look like a neon sign.
I know what you mean, the bird looks striking for his plumage alone and he often postures, calls fans his wings and you might think that alone is the display but then give him some cover and out comes that amazing bib (you cannot see the deflated bib under his beak either), Tragopans are just amazing and all vary in size of the lappet (do have a look at the other videos of Tragopans displaying on this page)

Wonder how on earth this "just a bird", or "after all, a bird" as we remark often,
can "actually grow" all these fabulandastically extravagant colors and patterns and shades of so many colors ON ITS OWN!!
How can it see and adjust the design while designing.
The point is that instead of "painting", it "grows every atom" of the colors effortlessly on the go!
