A great Elvis moment from Viva Las Vegas with a red hot Ann-Margaret! Elvis was paying tribute. He was a huge fan of Brother Ray and southern R&B. The Beatles used to play this song too!
@1olrocker I looked at the charts for 1951 and what I see is "Rocket 88 "Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats" (with Ike Turner) hitting #25, being touted as the first Rock and Roll song,.. I used to sing and play James Cottons' version of this, love it!
@1olrocker I thought Rock and Roll started in '55 with "Rock around the clock" but I guess it had to develop first, what songs was Alan freed spinning to coin the term in '51 to '53 for example? Just yesterday afternoon I was copy/pasting the pop charts from '55 to '71, and "Rock around the clock" was #1 in '55. but the Twist didn't happen 'til 1960
@1olrocker Have you seen the movie "Ray" with Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles? I would recommend it to you, if you haven't seen it, it's really good. I became aware of Ray Charles (and others) when I saw the Blues Brothers in the theatre in '79. I was 14. I totally loved that sound of "Shake a tailfeather" and tried to find more of that, from Ray but I don't think it exists. My wife and I found a box set of Ray Charles on the Dick Cavett show in '74? which is just prior to filming the Blues Brothers,
@1olrocker I just re watched this vid, and I was mistaken on the title, it's "What'd I say" written in '58, released in '59. "I got a woman" was recorded in '54 before "Rock and Roll" even existed. Pretty sure Elvis version of "What'd I say" is in the same key, and tempo, but yeah, young white kids re-energizing a great song. (Viva Las Vegas, 1963)
@1olrocker It all began at a party in Palm Springs, California in early December 1970. In a conversation with Vice President Agnew at the party, Elvis expressed his concern for what he felt were threats to American culture posed by, not only the British Invasion, but also the drug culture, the radical SDS, the hippies and the Black Panthers. Three weeks later, Elvis, accompanied by two body guards, was bound for Washington, DC aboard an American Airlines flight.
This is from the "Viva Las Vegas" movie. My wife and I have it, and it is definately Elvis' best . But, concerning Elvis being a better singer than Ray Charles, how does someone kick the ass of one of the greatest singers of all time?
@1olrocker yeah I did, you're right, the key has been changed, but at least Elvis was an American, the British invasion did to Rock and Roll what Elvis did to Ray Charles
@1olrocker sorry, I re-read your post to me, and, are you saying that you prefer this version, or you think Elvis performs this song a little too fast?
@1olrocker well, the interesting thing here, is that this style didn't exist, when Ray wrote this song, I was referring to shumpert67 comment below, I just think it's funny when people compare the worlds best, and say this one, kicks that one's ass. But, you're saying that "I got a woman" is one of those songs that is better, when being performed by someone other that Ray Charles, and I think you may be right...just like Jimi's version of "All along the watchtower" is to Bob's take
@1olrocker well, you sure know your Rock and Roll, and the British invasion bands you mentioned all promoted drug use, and the Queen was right there to hand out knighthoods. That's what Elvis warned the president about. Something I find disturbing is when a totally accomplished American bluesman or star had to cover the Beatles, Ray Charles for example sang Elenore Rigby...the British invasion virtually killed jazz...
Elvis, The Beatles and many others were influenced by the black singers/musicians of their time. They have said so in interviews and given credit to them. Now to compare Elvis to Vanilla Ice.....that is laughable.

I love Elvis and Ann Margret. They were a hot couples
Ann is wonderful. Elvis isn't bad either....
@1olrocker I think Johnny Rotten nailed it with "God save the Queen" or the Clash with "White Riot"

In this video, or as an actress in general?

'What'd I say?' made famous by Ray Charles really.

hot is he
he should have married her I would have! johnny
i thought that was a ray charles song...odd
What the heck is wrong with Ann-Margaret in the beginning. She has a really weird face on.
Elvis, The Beatles and many others were influenced by the black singers/musicians of their time. They have said so in interviews and given credit to them. Now to compare Elvis to Vanilla Ice.....that is laughable.
Agreed but it was cool then. If you detach yourself and look at some of today's dancing then you may realise how daft that is too.
