Fun tip for the Martial Artist and Fight Mistress: you can use a professor to buff both your Martial Artist/Fight Mistress AND your opponent's amount of counters by using Medical Care which increases the likelihood of setting up a huge counter chain which allows your Martial Artist/Fight Mistress to inflict massive damage.
For new people that is getting into Disgaea 5 All Unique skills, Tower Skills, Combo Skills and Squad Skill (Any skill that isn't a Weapon skill nor a Spell) will take the weapon in the main hand into effect if they deal damage Sword, Spear, Axe and Monster Weapon (Red) as the main hand will make them deal damage based off the ATK stat Fist as the main hand will make them deal damage based off your ATK and SPD stats Bow as the main hand will make them deal damage based off your ATK and HIT stats Gun as the main hand will make them deal damage based off your HIT and SPD stats Staff and Monster Weapon (Blue) as the main hand will make them deal damage based off your INT stat So for Vigor Death Strike it will use the ATK/SPD if you have a Fist as the main hand, ATK for Sword, ATK for Spear, ATK/HIT for Bow, HIT/SPD for Gun, ATK for Axes and INT if you are using a Staff in main hand Weapons skills will require you to have the require weapon type equip (Main Hand or Sub Hand) if the Main Hand weapon type isn't the require weapon type it will switch to the Sub Hand automatically provided that you have the require weapon type as the sub weapon All Fist skills will always be based off your ATK/SPD (Require a Fist in Main Hand or Sub Hand) All Sword skills will always be based off your ATK (Require a Sword in Main Hand or Sub Hand) All Spear skills will always be based off your ATK (Require a Spear in Main Hand or Sub Hand) All Bow skills will always be based off your ATK/HIT (Require a Bow in Main Hand or Sub Hand) All Gun skills will always be based off your HIT/SPD (Require a Gun in Main Hand or Sub Hand) All Axe skills will always be based off your ATK (Require a Axe in Main Hand or Sub Hand) All Attacking spells (Fire/Wind/Ice/Star) will always be based off your INT All Healing spells (Heal) will always be based off your RES Yes Vigor Death Strike will use the ATK/SPD more often since you will most likely will only use Fist weapons as the Martial Artist class But later on you will change weapons base off what you need

A game for those that truly love mechanics an oozes with love from the devs that just want you to have fun look cool doin it but make sure you still have to think especially in terms of modern rpgs it might as well be a foreign language to most people!its good to play a game that rewards dedication and time!

I'm mostly familliar with the Fight Mistress class, and only used the Witch on my last playthrough. I'd say the Fight Mistress is like a defensive Valkyrie, although the Valkyrie herself can get good stats from armor due to her high Defense aptitude and still get a lot of movement from her unique abilities. The Fight Mistress has to rely on boots to get more out of her evility, but honestly, having 6 movement is more than enough. Fists already provide speed and if you focus on upgrading that stat she gains a lot of evasion + damage. Active Despair is a bit unreliable, but useful for reaching out long ranged enemies if you position her correctly as it seems to ignore her attack range. And speaking of attack range, she gains a very early Evility called Chi Strike, which helps her counter more enemies when Active Despair isn't active. With all that said, I think most of her evilities aren't that useful for her, setting her subclass for Martial Artist or other basic attack and movement based class after upgrading her class a bit for those sweet base stats and aptitudes seems to be a better way to use her. Overall, she's pretty fun to use, but her damage falls off if you neglect giving her good equipment or a few reincarnations.
How is karmic punishments description confusing? If someone pushes you (If someone attacks you) you push back twice as hard (You counter attack twice as hard (your counter attack deals double the damage you took)) or at least that's how I perceive it
It's also make you always counter I have used it with forced counter and it always counter 20 time unless if someone have an evility that cancel the counter attack but I am not sure about the damage increase

From what I gathered, Karmic Punishment increases the range at which Martial Artist can counter, If i'm not mistaken it goes from 1 panel to 3.
