You need to see if you can get your hands on the Impossible Burger for comparison. The Impossible Burger uses heme, (a molecule that is part of hemoglobin, which your blood red and carries oxygen through your body, and also gives meat that "bloody" flavour,) except it is derived from plant sources to give it that red "bleed" you get from meat and burgers.

that girl in okc, I was a vegetarian for around 7 years. I did use Boca and Quorn once in awhile, because I like how they taste, not essentially as a meat replacement. I still do get them from time to time, but my diet is more like, not much meat but good quality meat, as Ben said. Today I had lunch with friends and they were all doubtful when I ordered a small Greek salad. For less than half their checks, I got a huge plateful next to their medium size burgers.

calamitasCorvus, it was on the menu as 'small', I can't imagine what the regular size would have been. Greek salads have olives and feta cheese, it was a very filling meal while still being healthy. Eat fatty burgers all you want, I value my health more than that!

@@bcaye Thing is you have to get that huge plate of salad to make up for the filling of the traditional food. So.. no not really saving anything there. Also if you live of feta and olives it's not healthy.

Seriously, the ignorance in this comment section is baffling.
1 A large percentage of people who choose not to consume animal products do so for ethical reasons or environmental reasons, not because meat tastes bad.
2 This burger is also designed to appeal to people who want to consume less meat, but because of the taste, or the nutritional convenience of eating meat, fail to do so.

SO MUCH YES! I would like to add to this though, that depending on your digestive system, certain products don't break down well and make you feel gross (dairy is a huge one, but I find pork/red meat in general doesn't agree with me) so finding other ways of enjoying the meat flavour without eating meat is amazing.

    • @JacobWDalsager
      @JacobWDalsager 6 років тому +20

I have a question, then. If veganism is an ethical choice based on environmentalism (I buy this premise), how are meat substitutes of any real value? They add an entire food manufacturing process chain (including factory costs, emissions and other environmental risks of processing) instead of simply saying "buy good vegetables, nuts, fruits, etc. and learn to use them properly".
Is substituting meat not going the wrong way, then? Wouldn't it be better to simply acknowledge that it's NOT meat?
I just don't see the environmental value of adding another type of processed food to our already massive food processing mechanisms - unless you can tell me that processing this artifical meat is less damaging to the environment than buying vegetables (potatoes and chickpeas, for instance) and making your own sort-of-burger-but-not-quite-a-burger, I'm not quite buying the product as a feasible way to be environmentally aware.
Compared to meat, maybe, yes - but the better solution (proper vegetables, etc.) is already out there. Why not just go that way?

    • @olly08021
      @olly08021 6 років тому +24

All of that and then you answered your own question. - "Compared to meat, maybe, yes"
"unless you can tell me that processing this artifical meat is less damaging to the environment than buying vegetables" - The comparison is not between this burger and buying & cooking vegetables. It's between this burger and a beef burger.
Which is why the argument about the manufacturing process doesn't work. If this burger replaced any portion of the beef industry, the offset methane would far outweigh any emissions from the production of a veggie burger.
Methane is 30x more potent than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas, which is why global beef consumption is of such concern in the first place.
SO the success of these burgers would directly contribute to a reduction of the greenhouse effect. That's the environmental benefit to these kinds of products.

    • @JacobWDalsager
      @JacobWDalsager 6 років тому +3

@@olly08021: If it replaces all beef production, yes. It does not. In an ideal world, this could work 1:1 at once - but in the real world, this just adds additional processing and manufacturing.
I don't see it being brilliant at all. We need less production waste and emission, not more. This adds to that - regular vegetables would not. My entire argument was built around just using vegetables, fruits and nuts properly in the first place - but you either overlooked or ignored that, didn't you?

But I like the fact that you guys talk about these substitutes and share your opinions about them. I don't really need other recipes using aforementioned substitutes though tbh.

I don't understand the dislike of veggie/vegan substitute marketing as far as referencing non-vegan food goes. Their names are meant to be an comparison of texture and flavor, and it's a lot easier to call something a "Vegan hamburger" or say it's like hamburger than to describe it as a "Savory and fatty plant based patty with a dense texture that gets a brown crust while staying juicy inside.".
Also, my local shop wouldn't stock a product with a label that said "Crispy ground soy burger!" in huge font because people would run screaming from it in a relatively rural area like this, but a "Chik'n burger" might get someone other than the handful of veggie/vegans around here to try it since it doesn't sound completely alien to them on every level and that helps it stay stocked every week.

I don't think meat substitute is a bad thing at all. There are many reasons to eat more veggie, but it is very difficult to just switch because food a big part of our emotions and our social life. When I was young free and single I rarely eat meat, I eat mostly nuts ,beans, veg and soy protein with the odd meat dish and rarer bacon sandwich. Now single again, I get to choose what I want to eat again. I don't have to give anything up or not try out something because the family don't like it. Through channels like SORTEDfood I'm finding new foods to try and challenge the tastebuds. Thank you. This burger actually looks tasty, unlike some fake burgers I've had in the past.

I love this video so much! And as for whether or not we should be concentrating efforts on meat substitutes vs. really good veggie recipes, I don't think there's a simple answer for it. As someone who doesn't eat meat (a cliche way to start a sentence, I know), I absolutely appreciate meat substitutes. I never stopped eating meat because I hated it; on the contrary, it was largely because I felt too dependent on it. Likewise, I would never want to be dependent on meat substitutes either, but I do enjoy a good burger every now and then, and meat subs like this a blessing for those cravings. I love that there's a cruelty-free way to enjoy the same foods, and I'm so happy that you guys are shining a light on that.

  • @HayleyBearrr

Personally, I went veggie when I was 9 because I didn't want to eat dead animals, but mostly because I didn't like the taste and texture of meat. Cut to many years later and I'm now 23 and vegan, I can honestly say I feel the same way. I think this type of meat substitute or replacement is fantastic if you're converting to vegetarianism or veganism because you want to improve your health, for environmental reasons or to stop contributing to animal cruelty but still want the satisfaction of eating meat, the concept of this burger is great. I don't feel like I need or want to eat a meat like replacement as I don't crave the taste or texture of meat in any way (can't honestly remember what it tastes like!). However, if burgers like this are helping people make positive change in their lives and eating less meat because of it, then I think we should encourage these meat replacements. It's also demanding more creativity in the development of the food we both produce and consume and that can't be a bad thing!

So, as a meat eater that also enjoys high quality vegetables, I think that the answer to Jaime's question is yes. Yes on both counts. I am personally trying to reduce my personal consumption of meat. I only eat red meat once or twice every two weeks, and I am really trying to only eat white meats like chicken and turkey three times a week. Something like this, or like the Impossible Burger are very helpful to me in achieving that. I also really enjoy things that celebrate high quality, delicious veggies, and (like James) I don't like things like seitan or traditional meat "substitutes".
Also, stay grumpy, James, stay grumpy. Your snark is amazing and very amusing.

I totally can understand James. Meat substitutes are just a weird kind of food. Even though you said that burger tasted, smelled and felt good, it still looked a bit unnatural. But if there are people out there who want the taste of meat (almost) daily, that might be a compromise.
I'd rather enjoy really good vegetables than trying to make them taste like meat. But if I crave meat, I try to go for great quality and celebrate that meal like crazy. And that meat is expensive enough to prevent me from eating it too often.

As someone who loves meat too much, and doesn't have a reason to go full vegan, this is an awesome video, because it's still showing ways to go MORE vegan... things that in all substance can replace non-vegan options! I'd like to eat healthier, and find new ways to enjoy food, as well as having vegan friends and family, so it's nice to know there are ways out there! I LOVE this video!

Guys this is a very nit picky thing, but at the end in the outro it sounds almost as if you each are in one ear, perhaps adding a mono element to it so the stereo effect isn't so artificial? Great quality video as always though, keep bringing us new things we've never heard of and probably wouldn't care about unless it was shown to us like you guys do.

I can’t tell if I’m impressed they’re not bashing vegan foods, or suspicious of this sounding like a sponsored/softened critique. Most meat eaters that make videos about vegan things unendingly hate things and say “if you don’t want to eat meat don’t make substitutes blah.”
I guess I’m glad they like it? Having more people be objective and show ways to make delicious things without animal products is neat. Maybe more vegan challenge videos would be cool? I like Jaime’s comfort food cooking style and would appreciate some dense vegan ideas from him, for example.

Kris for how much longer can we go on ignoring that we're consuming too much meat as a planet? Products like this (familiar since it's a burger) could assist at converting meateaters occasionally. Not that were saying people shouldn't meat at all... Meat (and fish) can form part of a healthy and sustainable diet. What's good is we can all talk about it... Just scroll through the comments. ^Ben

Quite honestly, I don't understand this cliche about preachy vegans/ calling meat eaters murderers.
I myself have stopped eating meat almost ten years ago and know a lot of people who don't eat (a lot of or any) meat as well. Neither have I ever tried to convert someone nor have I insulted someone for their dietary choices and the same goes for every other non-meat eater I know.
On the other hand, I have heard an andless tirade of people who do eat meat mocking or even insulting those of us who don't without any reason to.I'm not trying to stop you from enjoying your burgers and sausages and whatnot, but when you wave one in front of my face (or even slap me with it - yes that happened once) whilst I'm eating something else and make mocking comments, I _will_ get slightly irate.
Now this is not to say that _all_ meat eaters act that stupidly (they obviously don't - this video is proof of that) ; quite the opposite, actually: Most people I meet either don't comment about it at all or become curious about what I'm eating instead and ask to try some (with varying degrees of approval afterwards). But I do get just the slightest bit irate when people needlessly bash non-meat eaters and basically throw us all in with the kooks from PETA.
You can reply to this message.

Actually, I would have once said this is unusual, but I'm seeing a growing number of positive videos on meat substitutes made by people who still eat meat. I guess the products - at least some - are getting better and people are becoming more open to exploring them.

I feel like it's up to everyone's personal taste. Some vegans and vegetarians want to enjoy foods like burgers, sausages, etc. where as others prefer a more whole-foods diet or both. There is variety in every kind of diet.

  • @shamapes

I was highly skeptical with the introduction of a vegan burger from the burger chain, in Canada: A&W; their beef, chicken, and pork are raised without hormones and steroids, antibiotics. AND then they introduced the 'Beyond Meat' burger with 100% plant-based protein- WOWZERS! Tastes so good that you forget it's not meat. NOW- it has become so popular, that A&W's across Canada has been selling out. However they managed to get the combinations right- well done.
Now a burger that bleeds a bit...that;s a whole new story I would like to try :D

I’ve had beyond burgers at home and in a restaurant and probably three different style impossible burgers at different establishments. I had been vegetarian for 5 or 6 years starting at 15 years old but went back to a life of meat. Burgers are the primary reason I “missed out” while I was veg. These burgers kick ass. I order them when they’re on the menu. I’d eat them with vegan cheese, regular cheese, or whatever. I’m interested in turning one to a bacon bleu cheese rendition.

I personally am looking to go vegan because I just don't like eating animals and I live in the US and the idea of a self-regulated market for pork so far, they are working on chicken and I've only heard rumors about beef, but we can't seem to go a few spring/summer months without lettuce recalls and such, this is truly worrying times when it comes to food! My husband however is a meat and potatoes kind of guy and it has been hard for me to find anything in the realm of vegan food that he will eat. As I do not like cooking two separate meals all of the time burgers like this really appeal to me. I bought some Beyond burgers to try and he actually liked them! Now I'm off to try rice paper bacon :D

    • @uweschroeder

You could simply go vegetarian - vegan is supposed to be a lifestyle that very few vegans actually live. Everyone is "going vegan" these days. Do you have leather shoes or anything leather in your life? You're not vegan. Do you eat processed products made with i.e. palm oil? You're not vegan. Do you use bleach for your white laundry? You're not vegan. If you want to be vegan it's a science and chances are you never will be vegan because a lot of things are not required to be put on labels.
Personally I think the whole vegan thing exists for only 2 reasons: a) you can post about it on Instagram and everyone goes Yaayyyy and likes it and b) you are then entitled to feel better than other people and look down on them.
I for one will stick with my regular diet and I respect my friends who are vegetarian without the need to talk about it.
Sorry for your hubby. The wife of a friend of mine went vegan a few years ago and he's considering divorce - yet she's not even militant about it, he's still allowed to eat meat, just not at home. I think what annoys him the most is that with everything you do you first have to check if it's vegan. Your entire life starts to evolve around that obsession. You can't simply go buy pants or a household cleaner. A lot of the things are not vegan.

I've been eating about 95% plant based for the last 8 months or so. My main influences were the World Health Organizations findings on processed and red meats and the potential for cancer, nutritionfacts.org and many other medical professionals that are plant based, and the environmental impact that the industrial meat industry has on our home.

I think meat substitutes are a great way for meat eaters to transition into a meatless diet or for preparing a meatless meal for veg guests. Having been raised vegetarian I've had many dinners at people's houses that consisted of just salad and potatoes, because they don't know how to cook for a vegetarian. With more meat substitute options readily available, more often than not I now get offered that as well as salad and potatoes. Of course, as an adult I attend more potluck style dinners so I can show them vet cooking that doesn't involve meat subs. Love your show by the way!

Preston Siegler warning, open the windows when you cook it. It smells horrible. I prefer the impossible burger but a lot of people won’t accept it because it had to test 1 ingredient on animals and then vowed to never test again. But I think the benefits outweigh the 1 sacrifice. It’s up to your own ethics.

I personally don't like fake meat because it reminds me too much of eating a dead animal, but I think it's great for other people. Not only is it an easy option for people who just want to eat less meat, it's good for vegans who still like the taste/texture/etc of meat, just not the whole dead animal part. It's also easier when you're going vegan because it doesn't feel like your diet has to change too much, you can still have a "normal" burger. I prefer fruits and veg and to make my own burgers from beans and lentils, but I think it's a great option for some people so I'm all for it!

I love this. I haven't eaten meat in 12 years, and I appreciate people supporting reducitarianism. I would love to know, however, if when clean meat becomes available and affordable, if they would consider trying it/switching to it. I think it's a great ethical way for people to consume actual meat if they wanted to without taking a life, but some people are grossed out at the idea of lab grown meat. (I'm more grossed out at the idea of slaughtered flesh, but to each their own.)

Coming from somebody that has been involved in the food animal industry for almost my entire life in one way or another ( farm hand, livestock owner/ raiser, sale barn worker, animal husbandry, and lately a veterinary technician trying to learn food animal medicine) I do enjoy the concept of a food product like this but I could never fully switch to a vegan lifestyle.and u do agree with James ideas, choose the highest quality meat that you can locally source and afford. And only use what you need, nobody likes throwing away leftover expensive meats.
I believe that studying these types of foods will benefit the world greatly with overpopulation in large cities, and if they can make it more shelf stable as a resource to send to food deprived areas as a substitute in say a drought where keeping the animal resources alive are difficult. Conversely this technology could be used in space when growing ,say a cow, is impractical for meat. But where growing plants are easy.

I prefer dishes without "meat substitutes" like veg burgers, because the dish just tastes even better with less processed products. For a dish that's originally needed meat, I'd just substitute it with more vegetables and/or beans which works great (especially if you know how to season). So maybe we could focus more on how to do that?
I do believe that meat substitutes are a good thing to have though as some people few it as more convenient as they might mostly know how to cook with meat. I also agree with the health and environmental reasons mentioned in the video.
