Bruder MB Sprinter RC conversion Part 2 - transmission

- Second in the series of videos showing how to convert the Bruder MB Sprinter using hobby-grade RC. In this video I remove the rear bed from the truck and install a Tamiya twin gearbox - including fabrication of axles to join the stock wheels and working rear suspension. The video is deliberately very detailed to allow others to follow what I have done.
My intention in the videos in this series is that the conversion to the truck will be using commonly available, inexpensive components and methods which are available to and achievable by most people.

UPDATE. I've just got the steering (with spring suspension) working - took a while, but I was able to do it using only parts on the Sprinter and the Jeep that came on the back of it (plus a few screws etc). I tested the gearbox and found that the 'normal' ratio in the Tamiya gearbox that I used was a bit high (it went fast, but didn't have much torque), on the lower ratio the wheels are pretty unstoppable (subject to grip) although the truck is obviously slower. Changing ratios (and the position of the gearbox) only took a few minutes.When I've finished filming and editing I'll post up the next chapter.

Well done mate for producing a fantastic series of vids that show the engineering difficulties associated with adapting stock Bruder models into fully functioning RC models.

Thanks Ian. The problem solving aspect of these is great, plus the quality of the Bruder toys is amazing. The challenge with the steering will be to get the front wheels to turn without hitting the wheel arches.
Great thinking on fitting in springs for the rear suspension.

Try using wpl chassis and axles
I did use WPL axles & transmission on the Jeep TJ. I might try this on a future Sprinter build at some point. 🙂

is the tamiya gearbox modification easier than using a wpl/jjrc axles ?
I would say that each method has its pluses and minuses and depends on the model you are trying to convert and the look / performance you are aiming at. Personally I prefer to keep the original 'Bruder' look. It seems to be easy to find a tamiya gear box to go with each of the smaller Bruder toys and getting Bruder wheels to combine with them has proved not to be too difficult. The WPL potentially gives you 4 wheel drive and the steering well sorted. I would like to try a WPL conversion to a Mercedes Sprinter once I sorted out mating to the right size wheels (either Bruder or something else - maybe tamiya mini perhaps). 🙂

What were the total costst of it?
It depends on parts used. Prob around £150 for everything if you buy carefully I would think.
I enjoy your builds but you screwed up with the zip ties everything is perfect until you get to the zip ties and then you want to secure things with the zip tie instead of making mounting it and try to be a little bit more creative Yusuf pathan and someone years later will look at your car and that's what they're going to see zip ties
Fair comment. Cable ties definitely have their place in modelling especially on tidying the cables. They are good for prototyping fixtures & obviously help keep build costs down and help those without access to some of the tools that might be needed otherwise. I've now discovered 3D printing & am already designing fixtures without cable ties that would previously have used them. Thank you for you comments. 😀👍
