    This third, “prototype” video follows the “unboxing & ideas” as well as the short “teaser” first running video that I posted a few days ago. Since the teaser, I’ve tweaked a few things - moved the controls around on the transmitter to make the driving smoother and have increased the throw on the steering a little as well as split the rear axles to give better turning & reversing.
    At the moment only the front wheels are driven, the other two axles could have motors, but this would be covered in an ‘upgrade’ video at some point in the future. For my purposes front wheel drive is fine for now.
    It does really need 1:100 gearboxes rather than 1:200 which are currently installed, but these are currently in transit from China, so I’ll have to wait to see the effect. For those dying to crack open the front end I’ve included a segment on doing that as well as a fairly thorough run through of how this build works. This is deliberately intended to be a ‘budget’ build, using inexpensive components and simple techniques (tools required - drill, standard files (flat, round, rat tail), mini drill (eg Dremel - ideally with drive flex, with carbon cutting disk & router bit, range of flat and cross head screw drivers, small allen keys (or hex drivers), Stanley (box cutter) knife, super glue (cyano) with accelerator, soldering iron & solder, long nose pliers & wire cutters).
    Parts used :
    Amazon product link (affiliate link, so the channel will get a small boost if you buy one using this link) : amzn.to/2Vwm7PO
    1 inch (or 25mm) L section aluminium
    Small amount of 3 mm plasticard (plastic sheet)
    Small amount of aluminium rod 6 or 7mm
    1 inch (25mm) gearbox motors from Ebay - I think 6v 1:100 ratio will probably be best. Like this : www.ebay.co.uk...
    20kg servo : www.ebay.co.uk...
    Actuonix 100mm throw 6v L12 R linear servo - I used a 100:1 ratio, 210:1 might be better & lift more www.robotshop....

      Shouldn't it be the other way round. If you accidently leave the throttle position in full "up" on the trans, when you turn on the receiver its going to accelerate in an instant!

    • @sjoerdobaas5349
      @sjoerdobaas5349 4 роки тому +2

      eagle52 the throttle always goes back to zero with the help of a spring. you have to turn on the transmitter first so that the model doest pick up random signals and goes off flying full throttle.

    Great vid, nice to see your work feeding the dog. Saw this Volvo a couple years ago and immediately thought about a conversion to the Archer Artillery Platform. This has a FH77B 155mm Howitzer on the back of a 6x6 Volvo A30D Heavy truck, amazing bit of kit to see in action. To make the rear mounted autoloading gun move with stability is another project for the bucket list. Merry Xmas.

      Just looked this up - I see that this seems to be based on a very similar type of vehicle and how the Bruder Volvo would make a basis for such a project. Maybe a gyro (even GPS equipped) system intended for an RC plane or heli could come into play ...... couldn't resist putting the dog in at the end 😂 have a great Xmas yourself! 🙂👍

      I'm really looking forward to doing the build videos. I'm probably going to need to buy another truck to do this - as the trick is to get all of the alignment right to be able to remove the right amount of material in the right places to ensure a firm mounting of the motors and get the front wheels where you want them as well as fixing the internal components so that they fit & don't foul on anything. i'll try & get round to this as soon as I can. 🙂👍

    I am going to use 2 X 100 mm actuators for rams, as prototype, they are a bit short, but can be increased in length by using the Bruder ram ends cut to about 20mm and fixed to the end of the actuators, this also uses the Bruder ram locations in the chassis...

    Those little motor / gearboxes might be handy, I wonder how much torque you could get out of them, I am building a Tonka wheel loader. So far I have looked at the bully 2 motor on axle setup as well as that in the Clod buster, but your solution is soo much cheaper.

    • @RCModders
      @RCModders  5 років тому

      I think that you can usually see the torque in the specifications. They vary a lot according to the voltage, reduction ratio and type of motor used. You also have to watch out for the shaft diameter - 3mm & 4mm seems to be good for the Bruder wheels - I haven't used and 6mm ones yet. If you have a number of them, its probably worth thinking about a cheap ESC for each axle, as if one wheel is in the air, all the power seems to go to that wheel in the first instance. 🙂👍

    Hi sorry to be a nuisance but I’m about to look at an full RC conversion and would like some advice if possible.i have a toy grade RC MAN Tipper of the double E type it has two motors and a servo type steering system, one motor is for the drive and one is for raising and lowering the Tipper body.the reason for the change is currently the truck lacks accuracy in its control ie stick forward is full power so there is no precision when manoeuvring
    My question is can I connect both the motors using a single ESC I have a 20A braked esc similar to the type you used in the defender mod I am planning to use a fly sky transmitter with 6 channel receiver
    If it is possible to do with one esc can you tell me what is the best way of connecting any help would be gratefully received also thank you for the tip on the Facebook group I am now signed up and the guys have been really helpful and friendly

      Hi - for some strange reason UA-cam hid this comment from me, but I've seen it now. I noticed that you are on the RC united Facebook group & you might already have your answers there. I'm not familiar with this model, but generally ESC's linked up to the battery will sort out your drive motors (being careful not to put too much voltage through the motors - depending what they rated for) and steering, if it is all one way or the other, can be done with another ESC or electric switch, but better if you modify the model to accept a servo to give you proportional steering. You will probably find what you need to know in the Facebook group I expect. Good luck with the project, it sounds very interesting. Hope this helps. 🙂👍

    I'm going to use six geared motors, can I use one ESC for all six , one on each wheel, or should I use one for each in paralell

    • @RCModders
      @RCModders  2 роки тому

      In the later version of this conversion, I upped the voltage from 7.4v (nimh) to 12v (nimh) using 10 AA batteries in a holder. I went to 6 wheel drive (6 geared motors). I used 3 ESCs to drive the motors - one for each axle, wired in parallel for each pair of motors on an axle. I used 2s/3s small cheap DumboRC ESCs - with a stand-alone BEC to power the receiver as the inbuilt BECs on these little ESCs are only good for the 11.1v from a 3s lipo. I used another couple of these ESCs to power the motors in custom 3D printed rams that I lift the bed with. 7.4v wouldn’t give me the power/speed combo that I wanted. I think I ended up with 60 rpm 12v geared motors.

    • @RCModders
      @RCModders  4 роки тому +1

      I was only using a single 6v actuator, maybe 2 of them, or a 12v, or a different gear ratio one etc would fare better. Even so, these are expensive, as are proper hydraulics - which is probably the most satisfactory and powerful solution. However, I suspect that I can get pretty close to ideal using 3D printed parts and an N20 powered own-design linear actuator (similar to the 'ram' I used in the telehandler). When I eventually return to this model, this is the route I will go. It will some time tho before I can get round to this ..... 😀👍

      You ideally need a double pole 3 position switch on the positive from the battery - so the current either goes to the ESCs or the charge port or neither. 2 position fine as well, but you won’t have the 3rd position in the middle to isolate everything when not using the model.

      I want to test 6v 100rpm motors first (waiting for the second one to arrive) - as I only want to show people how to build something that I am totally happy with. Plus possibly I'll be doing 3D printed cylinders for the bed lift - these will cost less than £8 ($10) to make & will have metal T8 lead screws - the printer I am using (Monoprice Delta mini from Amazon) costs less than 2 Actuonix linear servos. I would like to do a video on using this (enough info to buy the right things and at least be able to reliably print my parts or anything else) - with free links to the designs. I have a lot of plans for videos in 2019! In the meantime I am very happy to answer any specific questions on the build or put photo's up on Face Book. Hi. I'm sorry, but I don't really do commissioned builds for people - as the cost of building is usually doubled (or more) if I include a modest hourly rate for my labour - plus postage and any import duties - it is much more cost effective to follow my videos and build yourself. When I have refined the design a little, I will be doing a build video and may be willing to sell that one for the cost of parts plus a sensible amount of labour cost. If I do I will let people know at the time. Thank you for your interest and enquiry. 😀👍

      To be honest the front wheel drive version works pretty well. When I return to this, I expect that I will develop 3D parts and give it 6 wheel drive. 😀👍
