Glad to hear you love your e-Propulsion. I have the first gen one and I love it for all the reasons you mentioned. I have a wooden tender and about a mile to my mooring but knowing the engine won’t break down and will always start is such a relief. I had some really sketchy and dangerous trips back from my boat after my old petrol OB conked out so many times and usually at a critical time. I would love to upgrade to the newer model at some point but happy for now. As you say it would be cool to have some more HP but life’s too fast as it is. Your kid is too cute and what a life she is having and with both of you around. Safe travels. Andy UK
On behalf of The Rigging Doctor, I say thank you for all of the input you have sent to Eprop. They got one a few months ago and love it, and your advice had something to do with that. Cheers to you! Oh yeah, good to see you 3 again. ;-)
OMG! I have never been so conflicted by a UA-cam video. I can’t decide which I love more: Renata’s hat, her GIANT LIFE JACKET, or her best friend the manatee! What a lucky kid. Thank you so much, as always, for sharing.
Based on the size of the dinghy, the precious cargo you carry; I believe that 3 hp is sufficient for your needs at this time. Three hp also forces you to scrutinize your day trip plans before you leave the boat or dock - weather changing, etc. My two cents. Tossing in another nickel for inflation, wait until the baby is a little older for a bigger dinghy and motor. By then technology changes will catch up and you'll be ready for ePropulsion's new 10 hp motor that they're working on. BTW - great video, I always enjoy your videos. I have a suggestion, how about a video about what you go through to create a 20 minute video now versus pre baby. That would be some heck of a comedy show. All the best.
Your ePropulsion outboard seems like a great product! I too would trade the ease of use, reliability & free power from the sun over speed most any day too! Thanks for posting this most convincing review! Dean Bradenton, FL
I just saw another guy on youtube, who had issues with the Spirit 1.0.. I think I was a bit harsh on him, but it clearly seemed that his motor looked like it was abused by gorilla’s for years and years, when it was only two years old. You clearly give the good example of how to be kind to these kind of products, and make them feel good and last long! Thanks for the great video guyzz.
I purchased an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus over the winter and have started using it during cruising system. Great to hear that you still like your outboard after 3 years. So far, so good for ours. Love that we can store it on the boat and not have to worry about gas and oil leaking everywhere. Very easy to start up and get going. We also bought the solar charger, which we connect to our 350w panels. Thank you again for your insights!
Your videos are always such high quality! Thanks for the info on your electric motor. My husband and I have been seriously considering one. Your info helps. I just love watching the three of you! Renata is so adorable and clearly has dad wrapped around her little finger! 💗
Another episode that had me smiling all the way through ☺️ Your outboard is terrific,as you said,as long as you’re not in a hurry, but cruising life isn’t about hurrying anyway is it👌🙂
You guys really make me miss our Tartan 37 that we lost after Irma. My wife and son lived on the beach on Water Island while I ran daily charters out to Buck Island. I've been watching you from the beginning. Congrats on your huge success!
You guys are great but I think that now I come back because of the baby !! She is a cutie. I think I see mom in her. That's the motor I will get next. Beats the mess and smell of gas
Nice video. EV technology is great! I've enjoyed having a high power 75hp stealth electric outboard on my 17' bow rider runabout. Excellent choice for the type of lake boating we enjoy. We can go over 20 miles on one charge. The top speed is 27 MPH and the last time out, we pulled the raft just for fun. Go Electric!
5-20-24 In pursuit of buying a new dingy for their 2024 Hybrid HH44OC Catamaran several electric outboard engines were tested extensively by Jason and Nikki Wynn. They wanted to see if they were better then their old gas outboard...and the answer is yes. They agree with you and went electric. No more oil changes or trying to find gasoline on the tiny islands in the south pacific. Same for their two hybrid Catamaran engines that can run off their battery bank or diesel fuel if absolutely required . No question you bought the right dingy engine .
Great episode, Renata & Electric propulsion! What more could a retired Electrical Engineer who has five grandchildren want? PS: Back in the day, the marine electric propulsion system I worked on was a twin screw 1.5 MW . A little bigger & a lot faster! 😊 Thanks for your videos!
I recently added an EM RT 160 to my pontoon effectively making it a hybrid. We absolutely love it, especially with our 6mo old daughter, since there are no exhaust fumes. Other advantages include silence for conversations, infinite sped control down to 0mph for docking, sneaking up in wildlife, not having to turn motor on to reposition, ability to turn motor to one side and use forward / reverse of electric remote to keep boat pointing one direction for sunsets, etc.
We love out ePropulsion too! We have been using the Spirit 1.0 evo for 18 months & it was 100m% reliable until last week when it came up with an error message, but eProp have worldwide service and they had us up & running within a few days here in Turkey, pretty impressive we thought.
I went with Torqeedo Travel for dinghy propulsion, but I have Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 for main motor propulsion, too. Electric was the way of the long ago past and will be in the future. We are getting close quickly. All the benefits you mention are true and can be replicated at larger weight vessels.
I was just talking to E Propulsion a few weeks ago about two questions I have. First how do you secure the battery to the motor when you leave your dinghy at the dock? The second question is E Propulsion says not to leave the shaft in the water for extended time. If you tilt it up in can be hazardous for someone coming in to a dock. So I asked if you could tilt the motor up and spin it around so the shaft would be in the boat. E Propulsion doesn’t have an answer for either question. Hopefully they will solve these issues.
Great video. I would gladly sacrifice a bit of speed for the E-motor. Heck.. after all,.. arent you suppose to slow down and enjoy life. From the instant you guys got that motor it seemed like a no-brainer to me. Ive been jerking on those pull cords slinging every curse word on the planet too man times. Not to mention the footage knowing there is zero 2 stroke oil, exhaust, in the ocean.. Its a non stop win. Sure hope you get to run the new version through its paces. Well done.
Loved the info on the motor as I'll be looking into one for myself in the near future, I also need a inflatable boat similar to yours for my travels, maybe you guys can do other episodes on the cool stuff aboard... Thanks and as always loved the new episode
aww, you guys are rocking this parenting thing! good job! Enjoy it, in a few short months she will turn into a teenager. I know that sounds like a crazy statement but when you get there you will know LOL. kids are awesome, but grand kids are better :D
Thats a positive 👍🏼 result for e motors ..especially given that you guys dont have the charging advantage of a cat .. If it could regen under under sail the one on sophisticated lady ..does this they hang it from the back of the yatch to recharge under sail when solars reduced or nil such as night sailing and it even acts as an emergency limp home motor.. it is more powerful but its been tested and they are so hassel free generally... a rim driven motor prop set up is more efficient still and protected. Use the aux input jump start connector plugs they use on competition vehicles ..they are widely available and designed to be safe and easy additions to a battery box or into body panels . And the dont involve that expensive word marine.😉
The electric outboard looks great. I especially like the fact that the more recent model does regeneration. This would probably make the motor the ideal auxiliary propulsion for a small sailboat or sail dinghy. They could sometimes recharge the batteries while under sail. When I saw the manatee I had to ask, does it have an option for a ducted propellor?
Would you also concider the new 500W Elite? ... You don't get into planeing with the 1kw anyway and probably only waste power over half throttle... So I was thinking about the elite for our dinghy in the med... So rarely more than 2miles total per day and just for the quick hop to the beach/restaurant in fairly protected waters
It's fun to watch kids growing up on boats. How old is Renata? You should throw that out there on your videos every now an then. ( I have the same question for LaVagabond and Delos too.)
Really nice review of the motor. I haven't seen anyone else provide the review before although several that I follow use it. Next I would like to see a real time update to see how big Renate is getting. I would bet she even has hair now! Great job! Thanks
We have been in the Bahamas for 4 months. I would of loved to have an electric outboard (almost bought one) but with my new love for pole spearfishing an electric would be out of the question. We travel many miles to find best fishing spots and go in and out of inlets with a lot of current.
Not sure how it would be out of the question. It easily will go 20 miles or more. As they stated in the video it will run for 6 hrs before needing charging. So I doubt you are traveling 6 hrs per day to find fishing spots. That would be practically all day with no fishing, or very lil fishing. As to strong currents, yea the one they have is not ideal for that. But that is easy to solve, you just get a bigger model. Like equivalent to 5hp would suffice. They have outboard electric motors that will power a full sailboat, so that should not prevent it from being in question or not.
@@sailorjohn2224 I already learned to speak spanish many decades ago mate. But IF you are going to find yourself on your way to Cuba due to strong currents, you would with combustion outboard engine as well. Not sure what part of you can get electric outboards equivalent to commonly used HP combustion engines that you did not get. As stated 3 - 5HP is pretty common for dinghies and you can get that equivalent with electrics. And that is plenty sufficient for 5 - 6 knot currents, which is pretty strong for currents. Guess it depends upon the size of the craft though, but fudge there have been plenty of people with only 5HP outboards cruising all around the world in up to 30+' sailboats. So if you can do it in that size of sailboat, it is much easier to be done in a smaller craft like a dinghy.
I love the electric motor. Most definitely get a spare prop. Don’t get too close to the crocs or gators ever. They can hear the electric motor underwater, jump 6 feet in the water or on land, run 10 mph plus and out swim humans. I was raised around gators and where you live you have heard the true horror stories. Stay safe.
I use a Minn-Kota 55 lb thrust motor with dual batteries, charged with a mini solar panel -- so almost the same thing, but much cheaper. It pushes my 20 ft Balboa more than adequately, and starts every time!
I used to use that same 55lb thrust trolling motor to move my old Catalina 22 around the docks. It worked great! Not very fast, but fast enough for a no wake zone.
The ePropulsion is essentially a trolling motor on steroids, so yeah, essentially the same thing. Looks like the Minn-Kota set-up gets you 1/3 of ePropulsion's base model horsepower for around 1/8 the cost. Nice!
@@Tom-ev4rg The only similarities is they both have electric motors.. Guess you think a Tesla is merely a gulf cart on steroids. And yes, you would choose the gulf cart because it is cheaper.
@@markleyg hmmm ... the only similarity is they both have electric motors?????? Now I know you are just trolling people. I wish you well on your journey of self-discovery.
I've seen the same problem and cars where somebody plugs at tire pump into the cigarette lighter and it cooks the cigarette lighter same situation and yeah you're very smart to wire it up correctly so it doesn't cause you and issue good job mate
Great video, as always and a helpful review of electric outboards real world 'behaviour'...other channels have them too, torqueedo being the main one and everyone seems to have the same enthusiasm for them... Maybe one day you'll swap out the big smelly diesel (I can't stand the smell, it makes me seasick). No more temperamental Mister Beke... We have a Beta 30 on our boat that is oil/diesel drip free as it's new (came with our recent boat purchase) and it's plenty powerful enough for our 31' Westerly and runs all day, quite literally. The only way an electric main motor makes sense is if you live aboard, are not in a hurry, have plenty of solar (I like the regen of the outboard), a good battery bank and have reliable sunshine...the UK not so much...however, having access to shore power would make it work...🤔 Keep up the good work and enjoying your lifestyle 👍
@@nick.caffrey I'd rather go with a shaft drive, like Rigging Doctor, than saildrive like Uma, although it works great for them... Would be lovely to have a boat where the batteries were part of the ballast, rather than the load: a sealed insert into the keel...?
Nice vid! I'm not a fan of the e-motors but you're converting me. No bueno on the old cigarette lighter 12V port. Love the family - you guys do it well! Serious Q: Can you lock the e-motor And Battery to the dingy (I think yes)?
Did you not read the title of the video? I run a MinKota electric on my dinghy with a Lithium battery. Love it and even cheaper. I grew up with small gas outboards. I’ve seen all the downsides. Only positive is speed. Nice to hear they like this product. Are they just giving us BS? Possible but I doubt it. Electric is the future for low power outboards, and hopefully mid power soon.
As one who created a diy electric output for my sailboat, I love them. However, let's be fair, a brand new gas outboard will be very reliable. Old ones though, not so much. And you have a pretty small dinghy so battery life isn't an issue. On my big sailboat, they did not last very long. Frankly, my view is get an electric motor for your sailboat, and have a gas motor for the dinghy which can be backup propulsion and the motor is easily replaced when they get old (3 years is old..)
I have a fairly new Yamaha F2.5 four stroke but it would be fine for a while then fail, I just never knew. Usually fuel issues and that’s despite running the car dry every time and using an additive as modern fuel has so much ethanol. I think I would trust my old Seagull more than the Yamaha but then the e-Propulsion is perfect.
Looking on the web for the battery size for this motor it seems it is a LIPO 1276 w/h 45.6v. Maybe I’ve got this wrong but I make it a max of 4.2hrs running time at 300 watts. Are you sure you get 6 to 8hrs? The weight at 8.7kg seems on the light side when I compare it to the trolling motor I use being a 12v 100ah lithium battery so about the same energy capacity @ 1300wh and I know high voltage can be more efficient but it surprises me it would be that much.
Have you visited here: www.epropulsion.com/spirit-evo/ A lot of info relative to your comment. For inflatable dinghy, 1 battery will do everything you need. But it's much better to charge during the day as an extension of the house bank rather than at night draining the house bank. Thus the need for a 2nd battery as they have. For sailboat propulsion, weekend use and weekday charging would be most popular schedule. 1 battery needs to last 3 days, or about 3hrs. From my experience, 1400 lb boat, expect 150W. So 450 Wh needed for 1/2 hr trips in and out of Marina for the weekend. Pretty manageable.
Hi, 14 foot croc by gosh. It might be damp and drizzly here in the UK a lot of the time but at least the wildlife isn’t going to chomp on my backside 😁
Do they make solar panels to charge the battery while Im on an Island camping. Torqueedo have solar panels for their motor and wonder if Epro has the same?
Noise, vibrations, maintenance, a place to mount it, and no additional need for electrical generation for us. We never turned on our engine just to charge the batteries, so solar was enough for us. On a larger boat, I can definitely see getting a wind generator but we we've ben happy with solar alone.
It is so nice seeing you three on the water again, regardless of the subject. Be well, fair winds, calm seas for all three of you.
I'm a 77 year old Navy Veteran, and...I LOVE you guys!! Cheers!! :)

I use a Minn-Kota 55 lb thrust motor with dual batteries, charged with a mini solar panel -- so almost the same thing, but much cheaper. It pushes my 20 ft Balboa more than adequately, and starts every time!
Not even close to the same thing.
Just shows how good the Evo engines are.
What length shaft and what highfield? Thank you great video
I've seen the same problem and cars where somebody plugs at tire pump into the cigarette lighter and it cooks the cigarette lighter same situation and yeah you're very smart to wire it up correctly so it doesn't cause you and issue good job mate
Yea those plugs are the WORST.
Got a message and it said I was selected. I'm Canadian, if that changes things I understand.
The only way an electric main motor makes sense is if you live aboard, are not in a hurry, have plenty of solar (I like the regen of the outboard), a good battery bank and have reliable sunshine...the UK not so much...however, having access to shore power would make it work...🤔
Keep up the good work and enjoying your lifestyle 👍
Like Sailing Uma.
@@nick.caffrey
I'd rather go with a shaft drive, like Rigging Doctor, than saildrive like Uma, although it works great for them...
Would be lovely to have a boat where the batteries were part of the ballast, rather than the load: a sealed insert into the keel...?
Hi, thanks for the video 🙏how much cost for the motor 👍👍
Hey Hi. I thought you were going to put when filmed from now on... Happy 4th!
It's from a variety of time over years of use.
👌
Not even 30 seconds in and she's dropping dad jokes ('...high time we give you the low down...'), sets the bar high for the next 15 minutes!
lol
First electric outboard I would buy .
Buy it underrated $2000 now
No BS. We love our epropulsion. Looking forward to being able to go fully electric all around.
I plan to use electric on my Core Sound 17 too.
I am amazed more boats don't use electric motors for their dinghys. In time, they will.
Which shaft length do you have?! I have a similar dinghy and am really struggling to figure out which length will be best. Thank you!

A lot of info relative to your comment.
It always has me wondering why we do not see more of them.
Hi, 14 foot croc by gosh. It might be damp and drizzly here in the UK a lot of the time but at least the wildlife isn’t going to chomp on my backside 😁
😂
Awesome to see youse guys again, just curious any thoughts about moving to a larger catamaran?
Eitan, we'll have some news to share shortly ;)

Are you still in Marathon? We lived there 12 yeats before moving to Fort Myers.
Do they make solar panels to charge the battery while Im on an Island camping. Torqueedo have solar panels for their motor and wonder if Epro has the same?
Do You carry an extra battery for your electric, to extend your range for exploring?
Hi and thanks. You have all solar and no wind generator? Any reasons?
Noise, vibrations, maintenance, a place to mount it, and no additional need for electrical generation for us. We never turned on our engine just to charge the batteries, so solar was enough for us.
On a larger boat, I can definitely see getting a wind generator but we we've ben happy with solar alone.
I got a note from you saying I was a winner, is this correct or a scam of some sort?
