Whereas the molecular formula indicates the actual number of atoms in a molecule of a compound, the empirical formula gives the simplest whole number ratio of the numbers of atoms. Since the molecular mass is the actual mass of a molecule of a compound, it is calculated based on the molecular formula. On the other hand, the formula mass is calculated based on the empirical formula.
