tetsuya nomura's classic era.
Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, and a few others. As well as a wrap-up of points I missed in my first video concerning Nomura's work in the 90's. This is where the fun truly begins.

tetsuya nomura's foundational era.

And now we begin a multi-part series delving in to Mr. Tetsuya Nomura's character design by looking at everything he has ever designed. Ever. No joking. This episode is fairly light and lays the foundation for his career to come, focusing on his work on Final Fantasy VI (1994), Final Fantasy VII (1997), Parasite Eve (1998), and Final Fantasy VIII (1999). I remember one my favorite parts of skyward sword was koloktos since it was so satisfying to swing the huge sword around
I made a character for an anime server and gave him a BFS or in his case a WFS, weapon of fearsome size, I gave him a very...very large anchor with a chain attached to it.
bro IS compensating for something
Inuyasha's Tessaiga was always a cool blade with all the abilities Inuyasha learns with it, but I always loved Bankotsu's sword in the later arc of Inuyasha. Two massive swords clashing, and the unique way Bankotsu spins his sword.
12:51 ok you can’t tell me that isn’t sol badguy
Play elden ring nerd
An underrated anime that you missed talking about is Claymore. In the show, these women have the organs/flesh of demons sewn into their body, which gives them supernatural powers, which is pretty cool on its own. But, they use the strength they gain from it to wield BFSs. There's barely any small/regular blades in the anime.
We all know what BFS actually stands for
We can never be friends i hate the blade of fearsome size 😤
My fave is Ike from fire emblem bro just casually wields a two handed sword with one
There’s no way zangetsu isn’t on the thumbnail smh
1:16 Who tf was the absolute unit who used to wield this MONSTROSITY?
"Aren't you at least a little scared of BOFS's?" "Blades of Fearsome Size? No. I don't think they exist."
I love this. Badass wholesome video showing respect to characters without all the bs! One of my favorites is Haru Glory and the Ten Commandments! 🔥
Haven’t watched the entire vid yet but would Magik be part of this?
Please go fall in love with shardblades from the stormlight archives
14:06 grandpa Max?!
Oh, a fellow connoisseur. Yeah my quest for "BFS" has led me to games and MMOs I'd never normally consider. Vindictus is a messy piece of crap but Hurk looked cool, and Dragonica was a complete waste of time but it had some cool greatsword designs. Mount & Blade has greatswords and they're great indeed, no feeling like side-stepping a charging knight and watching him eat shit as you cut down the horse beneath him. Fate has a couple. Herakles uses a big fuck-off stone pillar from the foundation of a temple, carved into a jagged axe-sword, and Siegfried of the Nibelungenlied has a more conventional one called Balmung. Both have decent anime adaptations, too. Hack GU's Haseo is a multi-classer in an mmo (in the game) and his second class uses a massive fucking chainsword, notable in the first game where he's going around hunting PKs in his "Terror of Death"-phase. It's so fucking brutal, I love it. He interrogates Bordeaux with it, revving it in her face to great effect, and you can later date her in the games lmao Speaking of giant chainswords, the author of Bleach had a short attempt at a manga prior called Zombie Powder where not-Grimjaw runs around with one. It's pretty cool, but afaik it's a manga only. Both chainswords serve as a pretty good indicator of the brutality and inhumanity of their wielders, too. Delta of Eminence in Shadow wields one purely because she's too dumb to wield anything more delicate. Not so much a character but Warriors in Dragon's Dogma are so much fun and the Warrior hunting a Griffin is such a classic.
Does kratos count? Blade of Olympus wasn’t his weapon of choice but it was in his arsenal 😅
Honestly for ff7 I always see the changing blade as a gameplay thing only, and that he keeps the buster sword as his main weapon in canon
Seeing as some FF swords were mentioned here, I have to bring up one of the old school ones. In Final Fantasy VI (released originally in 1994), there is a weapon which has become legendary throughout the entire series in one way or another that got its start here: the Atma Weapon, or Ultima Weapon as it was retranslated. While it doesn't look like much when you first acquire the weapon, one trait that remains constant with it is the ability to ignore the target's defense. The damage on it is *technically* variable, but it remains mostly constant as long as the wielder's HP is full, and the maximum damage increases as the wielder's max HP does. Cloud's version in the original FF7 works the same way, aside from ignoring defense. The FF6 version also appears as the largest blade in the game at full power, with the Ragnarok and Organyx swords coming very close. I believe the Organyx might be longer, but the Ultima Weapon honestly looks more impressive. Edit to add: I nearly forgot about the Lightbringer, which is actually the most powerful sword in the game. It can only be acquired by wagering the Ragnarok in the Dragon's Neck Coliseum, and it's about the same size as the full-power Ultima Weapon. It also has a chance of randomly casting Holy on hit.
Great video essay! Would love to see you make a video on the archetype of characters that uses tricks, wits, and resourceful fighting like Jinx from Arcane or Tsumugu Kinagase from Kill La Kill :)
I’m a little bummed that you didn’t mention my personal favorite examples of BFS characters and their swords, those being Blazblue’s Aramasa (used by the protagonist Ragna the Bloodedge) and the Scissorblade from Kill la Kill (used by Ryuko Matoi and briefly used by Nui Harime) The Aramasa, also known as the blood scythe, can take form of a scythe and was inherited by Ragna’s adoptive cat dad Jubei, and told Ragna that it originally belonged to a character named “Bloodedge”, a hero during the in-universe “Great Dark War” who sacrificed himself to the black beast. I won’t tell anymore than that cause spoiler reasons. The Scissorblade has a similar thing but it’s incredibly unique in design, that being at the beginning it was one side of a pair of scissors. Created by Isshin Matoi for the sole purpose to sever life fibers (which make outfits strong basically), was divided into two halves after he was murdered by an intruder, where they left one side inside Isshin and took the other half with them. The scissorblade has the power to grow in size, change forms, and as stated previously, sever life fibers. When combining the two halves together they can sever life fibers as well as prevent them from regenerating. Again I won’t go further into it cause honestly Kill la Kill is an experience best watched blind, but erm YEAH!
Ichigos sword is also a reflection of his lack of control. Thats why others are a refined katana
Does Alex Mercer’s blade arm from [Prototype] count as a BFS? It’s been a while so I can’t say for sure about it’s narrative significance, but it is cool as hell.
Honorable mention: Guilty Gear protagonist Sol Badguy's "Fireseal" (Blazer) or Junkyard Dog in the later parts of the series It's a weapon made from the remains of a much more powerful weapon called the "Outrage." Said weapon was so strong that it had to be broken into multiple fragments which Sol poses a modified version of the Fireseal combined with the Flashing fang thus creating the Junkyard dog. There's also another character in the Guilty Gear series named Nagoriyuki who welds a Daisho (a large oodachi plus a wakizashi) and is one of the few weapons capable of dealing fatal damage to Sol Badguy who possess impressive regeneration and durability from being a gear (its complicated but the Guilty Gear story is also complicated so eh)
WHERE TF IS MIHAWK 😭😭😭💔💔💔
"My name is joe and I've talked" is such a fire bar hold on 🔥
Thank you so much. Not only does that mean a ton, but it also shows you watched the whole thing which ALSO means a ton 🩶
Dante
I think War's chaoseater sword in darksiders works well too. It's a sword that's almost his size, as wide as a tree, yet he wields it with one hand. It's a good representation of his brutality and strength in battle as a representative of war. What's more, the many inlaid faces represent the horrors of war and what War's character represents to his enemies.
Big F***ng SWORD
Instantly subbed when i heard the Samurai Champloo music.
19:28 Haru Glory’s Ten Commandments
No it translates to big fucking sword
I think you’re doing great in making these videos! The research and presentation is fantastic, keep em coming!
You got it!! Three more parts to catch us up to present day. Stick around 🩶
Big F-ing sword Fans 🤝 Big F-ing Gun Fans.
I feel like this is the era when games could finally support the vision Nomura had for his characters. The FFX box art is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever seen, and while that's a cut-scene model, the in-game model is not far from it. Also it's impressive how much iconic work Nomura did in this era. And somewhat unrelated, I can't believe I didn't realize characters in The Bouncer were designed by Nomura. That game captured my attention in the same way the FF7 and FFX did.
Right! And what better game to drop on PS2 first rhan the bouncer for nomura and all his wackadoo ideas. Thanks for the comment! 🩶
That's quite a big sword you got there. Definitely compensating for something.
guy with big sword is certified hell yeah
I didn't know grandpa max was in metal gear
Does Kratos count with the blade of olympus?
“Blades of Fearsome Size? I don’t think they exist.” *(Gets Bisected by Dragonslayer)*
Despite being traumatised from the eclipse, Berserk is my beloved, I do not regret watching it.. it’s a beautiful piece of work, and the art is absolutely stunning..

Hawkeye Mihawk from one piece for sure is an honorable mention
Gotta say not mentioning the starscourge greatswords was a crime
Hellllll yessssssssss🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Will be watching this video on my day off tomorrow
18:37 this is a longsword, not a greatsword, logsword is just a katana
Claymore does a fantastic job of shining a different light on this trope. This is gonna be a long comment, so sorry in advance. The story mainly focuses on it's main character ,Clare, who is on a revenge quest (It's kinda funny how much she has in common with Guts) that started with turning into a witcher-like soldier to hunt man-eating monsters. However, the organization she's working for makes it's soldiers by making half-breeds out of the very monsters they hunt. And each warrior is given a person-sized sword as their assigned weapon as it's the only weapon suited for this grisly job. They even have a symbol engraved on each sword to identify the Individual soldier. Serving as not just a weapon, but also their dog tag! But unfortunately being this kind of soldier has its downsides. One is the fact that you don't exactly survive... sure, you get awesome strength, speed, and unique senses, but you also have to spend every day fighting the monster inside you. And one day these half-breeds eventually succumb, turning into the very monsters they're sworn to kill. So, before the inevitable happens, the dying warrior sends a black card from the grip of their sword to their closest friend. Their friend will then slay them so they can die as a human, and they're buried in that very spot, with their sword also serving as a grave marker. I won't go into further details because of spoilers, (also because I don't wanna spoil it for my bro, and he's DEFINITELY gonna see this comment) but there's a good reason why it's compared to Berserk, and it's not just because the protagonist is a revenge-hungry berserker, or that the monster design is somehow even better. It's writing quality is equally good! TLDR: Claymore is easily comparable to Berserk in almost every way (and not just a simple lookalike) and I hope anyone who reads this gives the manga a try.
