Another place to get gear is Freecycle where you may be able to pick up camping bits and pieces. Also it’s a nice way to give away old camping gear you no longer used

I've been watching these camping and gear videos for a while now. I live in Australia and most I watch come from the US and UK. Some are fantastic and some are rather dismal. There is a UK producer who, with his dog, produce some wonderful videos that are spoiled by his continuous cheesy grin and saccharine commentary. But, I've just become a huge fan of your videos mate which are well filmed, filled with great commentary with a dash of humour and realism...no gormless laughter here (as I find with that bloke with the huge black earrings!). You've got the recipe down to perfection. Well done, keep it up, and thanks!

Great vid Ben, I'd miss a brew in the morning tbf, crisp wise I never know what I'm buying since they changed all the colours around a few years back, when blue was salt and vinegar and green was cheese and onion but it's vice versa now, so it's a lottery what I grab 🤣🤣 also you know you've made it when Morgan Freeman is doing a voice over for you !!!

Another great post. For a battery bank I moved from my trusty Anker, which was hefty, to a NiteCore generation 2 (the outlets have contrasting colours) which is literally ½ the weight. I’ve been using it for the last 13months and is great: really holds its power.
I also moved over to the same Decathlon headlamp at the same time. My Fenix HM65R which is a fab headlight just doesnt get used anymore - all in an attempt to go lighter. Same had happened to much of my other gear: I’m discovering that a lot of budget gear is perfect - look at the Des Catty alcohol stove at 23 gms and under £10 including postage. My £150 jet boil hasn’t been used for over a year now.
I could go on and on & it’s thanks to you and others doing similar, that I’ve become aware of alternatives. Thank you for the reviews - love them.

  • @simonward4520

I have bought expensive stuff like jet boil, now gathering just with all my other gear, I use a £20 stove from amazon, sits close to floor with a tail to has canister. Much safer in my view. Does not always have to be expensive. My recommendation for a pillow and I have a few is one from mountain warehouse. Cheap but best I have, its not a blow up, foam type you compress, £5 I think.

Think I've said it before you can get by with a lot less gear and cheaper gear at this time of year it's when your start venturing up onto the fells in more unpredictable weather then you definitely need a step up in the amount of gear and the quality and then the price tends to increase.but also when your only walking an hour from home why not take a little camping chair a stove maybe a steak and all those extras that make it more enjoyable.but as for just start yes this is a good example of what basics you need.also a good attitude to leaving no trace and not been a knob setting fires and having big groups just having a party

I do like that you're not trying to tell people that they have to have high end gear to start out like some of the other people do!! No, you don't need any gear to go camping, but that's more for the harder survivalists and bushcrafters. Don't pay it any of your time. Some in our community for some reason really take issue with backpackers when they talk minimalist and ultra lite. It's crazy!

I'm a fly fisherman and like to simply car camp at my fishing destinations. I might have to hike some distance from where my car is parked but its usually not very far and thus I can have all the comforts of home like a warm meal using either a Svea 123 camp stove or a Coleman 533. Even use my small cast iron pans with them. Sometimes but not often I'll just sleep in my Subaru Outback but mostly I bring a small tent. Having a small camp table and a chair is also a nice luxury. All carried in the vehicle of course. As per your video flick, very well done and minimalist. Even with car camping I try still to not bring unnecessary items that won't be used. Just more stuff to sort through to get what you really need. Again, ver well done video flick!

I've adjusted my first aid kit over the years... now I carry leukotape, a tourniquet, a few bandages, a few gauze pads, triple antibiotic cream, tweezers, pain meds, anti-diarrhea meds, and poison oak wipes. Though, when I broke my wrist in February, my buddy improvised and made me a splint out of a dish towel, 2 large pieces of bark and tied it tight with paracord... worked great, the ER nurses were amazed (afterwards I began carrying an Ace bandage, too)! Thanks for the video and the useful information. Like you, there's no way my phone will keep a decent charge overnight, due to the amount of photography, network use etc.. but I do wonder with the power bank, when you charge it through mains, how long does that one charge last? Will the powerbank generally be able to then charge a few pieces of electric through 2 or maybe 3 days? Enjoying the videos, keep up the good work!

    • @daleyoutdoors

I have just purchased the Night Cat sleeping mat with built in pillow and lantern £34.99 I have two other sleeping mats. I'm a side sleeper and need comfort for my hips because of arthritis. I found I didn't get a comfortable nights sleep with the others so I'll let you know how this one fairs - You can pump it up by hand but I have a Flexi-gear pump which saves you the effort. I spent just short of £50 on the Aldi Aventuridge 2man tent. That makes 3 tents that I have now. Slowly building up my camping gear. I took my Tamar 2 which I love and it stood up quite well in some high wind conditions. plenty room- easy to assemble. The door in the rain being the only issue. Vestibule space good. it has enough pockets on both sides and a hook to hang your lantern. It is an outer pitch first but the inner doesn't take long to attach. I did use another tarp underneath to keep the footprint clean. I took two gas stoves and my Trangia burner. My three season tent was still cold even with a sleeping bag liner. I had to keep my thermal socks and down jacket on. I had a snood that doubled up as a hat. Most of my meals were packet and bought cheaply from Home bargains. Everything fitted neatly into my £30.00 Go Outdoors Nepal 65.

Not fussed about hot food but I must have a brew and biscuits and chocolate. You poor thing having a Regal size twix without a brew!!!
