  • Today we continue to track Hurricane Beyrl in the Caribbean Sea. The system has made it past Jamaica today, with thankfully somewhat limited impacts. The core of Beryls Category Four winds stayed just miles south of the island at the time, sparing them the worst.
Beryl is a Category Three hurricane this morning, but appears to be quickly weakening in the face of westerly wind shear. Beryl no longer has the red-hot waters beneath to fight such heavy shear off, and it appears climatology is starting to win out. Still, Beryl will be a significant hurricane as it moves through Mexico's Yucatan on Friday, and folks there should expect a good hit.
Friday evening Beryl will move into the Gulf of Mexico, slowing down and gradually turning northward. It will likely be a Tropical Storm at this point, but could recover some strength if the wind shear relaxes. It will make a northward bend, and should come ashore somewhere from Northern Mexico, to Padre Island in Texas. The Rio Grande seems to be the center point, with possibilities on both ends. I don't think this gets any further northward than that, folks in Houston/Galveston and Louisiana seem to be off the hook. Landfall at this point, looks like early Monday. Folks in South Texas should be preparing for a hurricane this weekend.
We'll keep track of things through landfall.
