Eric’s father asked me if I wanted to purchase his Porsche back in the 90s when they had their store in the Orange Plaza mall in Middletown NY. He was selling it for $30k. After Orange Plaza, they had a store in the Dutchess Mall in Fishkill, then a space at the flea market after the mall closed down. I spoke with them there on several occasions. Once was right around the time of Eric's passing. The Caravellos, my wife & I all had a needed hug & cry session. It was very surreal for me at the time, standing there hugging Eric Carr's Mom & Dad as we all blubbered on each other's shoulders. They gave me a set of his signed sticks. They were great people.

Eric and Bruce have to be the sweetest, most kind people to come out of Kiss. It's really sad to hear they were just employees. Both are talented beyond measure. 4:45 The tax shelter he discusses with something that Jimmy Carter’s administration had put into place; it was for people to invest in natural resources. They were given a tax break as an incentive to invest in things like solar energy, oil wells etc. Kiss weren’t the only ones to use this tax loophole. In fact, many other entertainers did that as well, and many others lost their shirts, too. What happened was, when the Reagan administration came into office, they vetoed the legitimacy of that tax shelter; not just at the time, but also retroactively- people were taxed accordingly, going back to their initial investment, and were fined also if they couldn’t pay it ASAP. Apparently, it was a huge mess they cost many people in Hollywood millions of dollars

I think Paul and Gene had pretty steady money coming in all through the 80s-1996 through consistent back catalog record sales of the 20 something albums they put out in just the first 10 years of Kiss's existence. If Chris Lent was just the financial road manager he probably had not thought about that. I didn't get into Kiss until 1985 right before the Asylum album came out and I was buying a couple of Kiss albums on cassette and LP per month then a couple years later all on CD and I know there were many of us doing that

The way they treated Eric was horrible. We know he was basically a hired gun, but Eric thought they were all friends.. But I guess Gene and Paul didn't see it that way. Eric was just an acquaintance and co-worker to them. Who could just be replaced if he were unable to do his job.. There was no brotherhood there like fans want to believe. Bruce was Eric's friend. Ace was his friend. Gene and Paul weren't. Those two don't have friends. Gene has even admitted he doesn't have real friends. Kiss wasn't a band to them. It was strictly a business.

I can shed some light on that time in Kiss and I guess probably the way it was in general. As a guest of the promoter and other friends I went to four Kiss shows with a laminated "ALL ACCESS" backstage pass. I spoke to Eric and Bruce every night of those shows and they were absolutely great guys just hanging out backstage talkin. Each night a few top members of the crew would come around to everyone backstage and say "Time to go people Gene and Paul are pulling in". Eric and Bruce would have a parting word or two if we were with them and we were escorted to the "VIP" area. A limo would pull right up to the back of the stage and the show would start shortly thereafter. When the show was over the limo would leave and it's all good again, do what you want just stay out of the crews way. The irony is I did not like the band much at that time and really did not care about meeting Gene or Paul but I did enjoy talking to Eric and Bruce.

some of this is misleading. Kiss were a PLATINUM act once they took off the makeup in '83. All of their albums basically went Platinum (save for 1 or 2 ) after the makeup came off. Smashes Thrashes & Hits went DOUBLE PLATINUM in fact. Forever was a top 10 hit, their biggest ever after Beth. And Larry Mazer, (Kiss' manager for several yrs in the late 80's early 90s) has said the Hot In The Shade Tour in 1990 netted around 1 million dollars after expenses in an online interview. The Asylum Financials were released online (leaked) and they showed a profit of around 3/4 of a million dollars for the Asylum tour, and these were mid 80's dollars people.
Kiss was still a big act in the 80's, the problem was that Gene & Paul had a bad penchant for consistently over spending as C.K. Lendt talked extensively about in his book. Also Kiss made some very bad investments in the 70's (which Lendt also referenced in his book) that came back to bite them in the 80's, and that was the main reason Kiss were in rocky territory in regards to their finances in the 80s.
It wasn't because they were hanging on for dear life like a lot of the 70's only fans love to mislead people into believing. You can be a successful band, or individual, but if you over spend constantly and possibly made bad investments previously in your life you can still have financial problems despite your continued success. Look at Michael Jackson. He was doing rehearsals for his concert tour before he died not because he was not still making good money, but because he was constantly over spending in his personal life and he didn't want to sell any of his publishing or his Beatles catalog, so he was going to tour again even though by most accounts he didn't really want to tour anymore.
Point being - what's going out of your bank account is just as important as what's going in. Problem is a lot of bands and successful people sometimes don't fully grasp this.
    Hence Kiss (Gene & Paul).

    • @KISSFanBD

Well said. My first KISS concert was Hot in the Shade in 1990. It was said that Gene had lost focus in the band and Paul was keeping it going. Their concerts were dialed back because he f their financial woes. They brought back the full show in 1990 for Hot in the Shade and it was an amazing experience.

    • @TheTN24
      @TheTN24 4 місяці тому +1

Yep, good response. Also Kiss the band, it's finances were always kept separate from Paul and Gene as best possible. Many bands are set up this way so it doesn't intrude on personal finances. As you said they were successful in the 80's post makeup but they weren't raking in the dough as they were at their peak. I wouldn't assume Gene and Paul were super rich during this era but millionaires and living comfortably for sure.
People also forget, paying for touring isn't cheap and those expenses come out of the tour and help from the label...which gets paid back. Fact is Eric and Bruce were paid extremely well and fans have to remember if they were paid that well, Gene and Paul were still making more. By the reunion tour the band had simply run it's course. Yet another trend in music was happening and it's pretty amazing that Kiss had lasted that long anyway. The reunion tour was simply to good to pass up financially and now both Gene and Paul are worth upwards of 400 mill in Gene's case.

What you are saying is more accurate than the video this guy put out. Gene over spent, Paul always kept himself in check. Bad investments were made, like buying into the Arena Football League. That being said, after the year of 1977 KISS has been a Company worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They have never been in financial "trouble". It's clear that bands like Kiss and the Rolling Stones are companies. When a original member leaves it's financially smarter to hire a musician than replace him and make someone a full member who will take an equal part of the business. It's not very sympathetic but nearly every musician will take the opportunity to be hired by such band. Even if you don't last very long you've made a name for yourself that lasts forever.

Let's be realistic - they bought him the car because they didn't want him to embarrass them. What he drove was a reflection of them, as far as they were concerned. There's nothing generous about those two. Paul Stanley thought he was going to get out of his divorce from his wife of many years by paying her living expenses while she attended college so she could support herself. He thought that was generous of him and he was shocked when she hired lawyers and went for much more.
He said that "she had always said she wasn't after his money but it sure felt like it now!"

Eric was fired from the band while he lay in his hospital bed, about to die; he was fired to save KISS Inc. on insurance premiums and hospital bills. Don't be fooled, with Paul & Gene, it is ALWAYS about the money.
Bruce doesn't sound the least bit bitter to me - he sounds honest. He has always been gracious, and diplomatic to a fault regarding the guys in the band and his time in KISS, and even now that he is a little more willing to speak up, he still does so not only with diplomacy, but with class, and dignity towards all.

I'd have paid in KISS for free! But, jokes aside, I don't see that anyone was unfairly treated. 2000 a week to play drums in the 80's isn't bad. And after ace and peter burning them so bad I understand Paul and Gene being wary of bringing new people in as full members.

NOT BEING IN KISS as a full member was actually a GOOD THING. It meant it was a job, you played what they asked you to play and used that experience for future gigs. If you think about it coldly, leaving all emotion aside, KISS was a corporation, a brand, not a "band" anymore. The spark was gone and they just kept the business going on old hits, explosions, and nostalgia. No amount of talent - and Eric Carr and Bruce Kulick had plenty would save that band or bring it back to the top as they did before, mainly because it was now Paul's band. Gene was only a YES MAN, a rubber stamp. What post-Elder song is there that evokes the feeling of 70's KISS that you'd remember and play it in your stereo that would last as long as something like "Detroit Rock City" for example? I couldn't come up with one either. "Lick It Up", "Heaven's On Fire" and "I Love It Loud" are good efforts but are but a flash in the pan, pale attempts to recover a past glory. Not worth a second play for at least 8-10 years. I'm glad they're gone, and I hope the avatars either never come or that they are a total failure. Let that band die with some dignity. Paul has done enough harm. Gene has enough money. Those guys are sick.

Supposedly , Eric asked Paul if he could paint the Porche camouflage , and of course Paul said no. Just one of the stories I’ve heard about Eric when he first joined the band.
It’s not a secret Eric liked camouflage clothes , so it kinda seems like it would be a real story. But the only one that really knows is sadly gone. I became a drummer because of Peter Criss , but I got better because of Eric Carr. I was driving to work the morning I heard the news Eric had died , and I pulled over on the side of interstate 75 and just cried. If anyone deserved to live it was Eric , in my opinion anyway. He was just a good hearted person.

I understand that Peter Criss got screwed by his manager after the reunion tour and all that but still winning 15K $ by show. At the same time, $40K per night was more than most of North Americans during a whole year. As for Eric Carr and Bruce, it was in 300,000$/500K--->2024 wasn't that much compared to professional athletes these and artists in the big league market, but was fairly paid as KISS were getting even with concerts. However Paul and Gene got the best of them (especialy Bruce) for not paying paid for credits during the 1980-90's.

Any other band taking in new players were considered members. Ah, I get it. If a person like Eric Carr taking Peter's place were considered a member, they'd have to pay him what they were paying Peter. Gene and Paul were cheap af.

@@955472 In name only. He wasn’t getting a quarter split like he should have been. In truth he was kind of treated like a red headed step child. It wasn’t overt to the fans eye, unless you notice that prior to Hot In The Shade, Eric never got any writing credits. He also never had any lead vocals on any songs prior to his one and only lead vocal Little Caesar on Hot In The Shade. They forced him to do a lead vocal on Beth for Smashes, but nothing other than that. Which kind of sucks because we know Eric was a multi instrumentalist, and in all likelihood had songs of his own or that he cowrote that could have been recorded with him on Lead vocal, but it never did. In Paul’s book, he speaks of Eric getting into a funk because he wasn’t the “original” drummer of KISS. I suspect the truth may be more that he was Treated like a non original member even after giving all his time and creativity to the band. He was under a chokehold by Paul and Gene and wasn’t taken seriously as a creative force.

Shit, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer have been in Kiss longer than Peter and Ace and they still just get paid a certain amount. I believe it is widely known that on the '96 tour, Ace received $20K per gig and Peter received $10K per gig. Ace did get royalties from merch sales and Peter didn't.
In the mid 80's that Kiss tours were not very successful. The booked arenas in America but mostly those arenas were ½ full or ⅓ full. Some shows were moved to smaller venues or community theaters due to low tix sales.
Kiss was in such bad shape that the much anticipated '92 Revenge arena tour was pushed back once and then ended abruptly due to low ticket sales. There was not a proper US tour until the "Convention" tour of '95 that had an admission price of $100.
So yeah, Gene and Paul played the part of wealthy rockstars and insisted they were driven to and from by limos, but those were lean years and ticket sales were nowhere near their peers.

The more than pompous attitude of Gene and Paul looking at Kiss like a business instead of a band reducing the band to not always having the magic of music where the sum is greater than the parts. Coming full circle with Kiss getting caught using backing tracks on their tours. Why fans still bought tickets was certainly beyond me. Live music is just that, supposed to be "live" music. So really Kiss has been offering one thing, but then providing another. That's just bad taste. And this video does not surprise me. The music business is a cut throat business. Many new and up coming bands and musicians start at the bottom of the pay scale especially if they have a record business behind tem. They are expected to pay the record company back for everything. They don't really start making money until they have been established for a while. For those who are the starving artist musicians, will be eating Ramon noodles for dinner every night for a while.

I was tracking at 5850 Hollywood Blvd. /Fortress in 1991 during hot in the shade, almost everyday, Eric RIP was super nice gave me all kinds of drum gear , a stool I played on from 91 till about 2012 anyway, he said he was just buying his very first house in 91 and he had been with KISS 10 years. (I imagine you don't really need a house touring all the time anyway, but he was saying he was not rich in code, I do know later that year KISS hired my hair Stylist Glen Scott and he told me: "KISS paid him $2500 a week plus prediaum + he was on retainer exclusive, he got paid even off tour in case they had special appearance etc". , My one friend was Genes assistant in LA and washed his Rolls Royce ran errands shit like that, one final thought Tommy Thayer was in the studio everyday during the tracking/recording of Hot in the Shade. he was intrical even back then just thinking out loud..Paul always drove up in a Black Porche i think 911 there is my 2 cents. Cheers!

I heard that it was a 1980 Porsche so I figured that it was a new car. Paul and Gene gave it to Eric in 1980.

Interesting. That tour posted a one million dollar profit. Could have been more if Gene and Paul had stayed in a regular room, too.
