  • This is how I slap together a tune. The more you write, the easier it gets. I had no plan when I started filming. I think this could be a very cool song. You can borrow the idea if you like.

    Really enjoying the surf music insights this morning. I'm still new to guitar (learning late in life) but my uncle and I jam and our next one we were thinking to do more surf-related. I'm definitely going to try holding down this progression with him as it seems really fun. What I like about your videos is you really make it about the fun of playing -- it is obvious you enjoy it, and even surprise yourself as you explore. This is really important for beginners like me to keep in mind -- the fun!

      That is so great! People get way too uptight about learning and I understand. If you play some simple chord jams with decent rhythm it's bound to be a good start. Thanks for checking in. I have so many original tunes in process right now but really having so much fun with it.

    Awesome. I usually play thrash metal on guitar, but started doodling on it and liked what I played. It sounded like what I would described as surfer punk, so now I'm looking into surfer music. I really like it. Thanks for the video. It's the first one I chose to get into the genre.
    Seems a bit odd to play this music on an ESP explorer lol.

      @@brookhoover1384 Hello Brook !
      Actually I like everything. My thing is to do covers with voice, keyboard and differents guitars effects (and different guitars).
      But above all, in guitar, I like spanish guitar, surfrock, hard Rock (ACDC style), 70's and 80's Pop.
      I really enjoy to play funk as well whose progressions I have a little trouble understanding.
      I have an intermediate level which allows me to make differents covers.
      Recently; I bought my Boss RC-505 mkII Loop Station which changed my life...

    I’m in a surf/punk band with my mates and I am pretty much the only oldschool blues guy. The others are either from a modern metal background, jazz/prog rock background. I made this demo of a surf song but I use the standard blues progression. Now my prog friend really dislikes the blues scale as he finds it too standard. But I think the song doesn’t work anymore if it’s in a different chord progression. How would one say no to a bandmate without sounding like a complete dictator?😂

    • @brookhoover1384
      @brookhoover1384  6 місяців тому

      Man that is a tough one. I have a rule I state clearly with my friends and any band I am in. If you don't like something I am playing tell me and I'll fix it. Basically we must have total freedom to discuss music without getting emotional. I try to accommodate every musician I play with and make them comfortable. I have another rule and that is if a person has a suggestion, we always say "Let's try it" which is code for "I think you are insane and I'm going to laugh my head off when you make a fool of yourself yet I could be wrong and you might be brilliant so please accept my apologies for doubting you". To make your bandmate really happy, I'd explore his idea to the fullest and make a demo if it the way he hears it. Compare the two and see which one really works. Let the band vote! My bands have brought in songs I did not think would work but they usually turn out ok and we are all still friends. At the same time, we respect each other enough to just be quiet and play what we are told. No ego battles are really tolerated. We try to do what is best for the group. Let me know how it turns out. I'd like to hear the song. Can you email the demo to me? hooverguitar@yahoo.com

    I love surf music! Thanks for this video. I know everyone likes to play surf music on the Jazzmaster. But was the Jassmaster available in the early 1960's? Is that what The Ventures, The Beachboys played? I thought they played vintage strats? No? Anyway, thanks again for this video. Very information for me, a hack, who is trying to learn surf and capture that iconic sound.

      If I had to pick between jazzmaster and jaguar, I'd go with a jaguar. Have you seen the Johnny Marr Jaguars? I had one and sold it off. Dumb move. Just got it replaced and am really happy. I play a Japanese Jaguar and it's good but this one is way better. Jazzmaster is ok but not near as versitile. Plus the jaguar has one more fret.

I have a Squier Vintage Modified with upgraded AVRI bridge and AVRI pickups, which gets me a really sweet surf tone, so I wouldn't trade it, but I would like it to be my gigging guitar and to have a Marr for recording. I hope you get another Marr. You deserve one. Thanks again!

    I am new to electric guitars as I play acoustic and old 1920's style rag time stuff. When looking for a surf guitar amp, most if not everyone is a club player and insist on a big amp. I will just be playing at home and do not need to replicate the original surf sound, but need something clean and small. Also I was thinking of the Fender '57 Custom Champ 1x8" 5-watt Tube Combo Amp plus I was going to get the Fender 63’ Reissue Reverb Unit Brown Tolex to go with it. How does this combo sound and playing with a Fender American Ultra Jazzmaster - Cobra Blue with Maple Fingerboard? Thank You very much!!

      @@brookhoover1384 However my first choice would be the 64 CUSTOM DELUXE REVERB, but I am not sure if it would be too loud for just at home? Get mixed comments from people but one person did say this, ''For playing at low to moderate home levels, the DRRI is one of the best sounding amps around. For strictly home use you might also look at the Princeton Reverb reissue; it has the same control layout as the DRRI vibrato channel (single channel with two inputs) and the same preamp and power tubes (6V6, but biased hotter), the vibrato is superior (uses a tube circuit to modulate the effect rather than an optical "bug"). And the vibrato knobs are always active unless you use the foot switch.
      So if you want to push the amp itself a bit harder the breakup will come at a little less volume.'' And then another person says, ''No the DRRI isn't suitable for bedroom use it suffers from the problem all fender valve amps have nothing happens on the volume till about 4 then its too loud''. Then, ''I've owned both a DRRI and a PRRI out of the two the PRRI is more suited for home use. Both amps still need to be turned up to 4 before you can get a full sound out of them below that they are thin with little bottom end.'' Then the last one, ''Yes, you will be able to use it at less than ear shattering volume. If you like the amp, go fro it. I use mine at home all the time, no problem, Volume settings 2 to 4, depending on the time of day or who else is in the house. If you get together to play with friends, it's all there as well. GREAT AMP!'' See what I mean? So what do you think? Maybe an example on your channel? Thank You! Subcribed!!!

    • @brookhoover1384
      @brookhoover1384  8 місяців тому

      I use a DR and turn it up to 3 in a ballroom and no need to mic it. No need for sound system. Fills a giant room easily. I don't need to turn up loud at home or studio. Clean is my thing. Add a pedal for a little overdrive and you are good. I'd probably buy a Silverface DR if I was seeking one. They are excellent sounding amps. I am also sure the hand-wired one is quite wonderful. I use a DR reissue as a spare and think it sounds wonderful too. I am not into the '68 custom series, they sound weird to me. The DR will hold it's value pretty well. I like that you are going for quality gear and you have good taste. I have used a 1965 DR for gigs since about 2004 and it's always perfect no matter the venue large or small.

I'd take it to a local guitar shop and see if they can test it with you and come up with any remedies. Does it have an original bridge? If it needs an upgrade, we love the Mastery Bridge.
