Total newbe,76 years old just bought Yamaha 112v.gonna learn to rock...Subscribing to you and a few others....But by far yours is the easiest to follow just by the brilliant camera angle..Going to check your back catalogue...
Thanks SO much for shooting the vid with that angle!! I can't tell you how helpful that is to me! I'm a total beginner and every video I've tried to watch shoots straight on and I have to look at it, pause it, figure out What fret and all that crap. With this its like I'm looking at my guitar playing it. I'm a surf maniac and have been wanting to learn how to play guitar forever! Thanks!
THank you so much for this lesson. I must say though. i've been playing guitar for 8-9 years now, and what you just said and taught people is what kept bugging my head as a guitar player (not just for surf music... these tricks are good for most of the genres) and you just taught me so much in 15 minutes. This is seriously the best guitar lesson i ever had. Thanks so much!
One thing I have noticed on You Tube is how easy it is to give misinformation about history, post it, and suddenly it becomes the new truth. Rock roots is no exception, however well meaning guys are. Thanks for "truth to the roots", Joe.
AWESOME Demo!!!!!! I REALLY Like this 'knowledgeable insider' conversational-educational 'style' of teaching/sharing so many tips, tricks, licks, and history of Great "Surf" music! Great camera angle!!! ......=> just by listening to this for the first time, I almost feel like I'm reaching some kind of "SURF Nirvana"!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! ; D
I have been looking for years for some explanation as to what was going on in some of my favorite surf music. Thanks for explaining Man. I finally got a starting point!
great! And what a genius way of filming a guitar turtorial! Everybody should use this “first person” way of shooting guitar tutorials. It’s really easy to see what’s going on!
Great stuff, thanks. I really appreciate you going into some of the theory as well as showing technique, most teachers either go heavy on one or the other.
Cool - with the Nighthawk you can split the humbuckers, so definitely do that for a single coil sound. Go for a Fender amp, or one in that vein, with a real spring reverb - modelling amps don't real cut it (IMHO) for real surf tone. I was using the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb reissue in this video. For most surf tones, plugging straight into the amp is the way to go. Sometimes a compressor is cool for clean solos (I use an MXR Comp), as well as a fuzz or overdrive (Maxon OD808 is great) if needed.
Excellent. Thank you, Joe. I have been playing .10's so will give .11's a shot and check to make sure I'm not getting fret buzz while tremolo picking. Thanks again.
Great little lesson again. I recognize the used scale for these doublestops: mixolydian. That's what's used often in country also. (together with both major and minor pentatonic and / or major and minor blues scales) Keep up the good work!
www.joedocmusic.com dude your a great teacher ive only been playing guitar a year and ive recently been getting my head around the hard stuff.i.e blues scales and now surf have to say its hard to learn but when you get it its so satifying what guitar and effect pedal you using ? im guessing a fender guitar ?
Ryan Williams Hi Ryan, Yes, that's a Fender Strat. I think I had a fuzz pedal on, with the guitar volume rolled back a bit, for a classic tone, and then into an analog echo pedal. best, joe
ye man your guitar produces a wonderful sound I like the way you teach aswell, the position of your camera maks it really easy for me to see where the fingers are going ive only got an encore electric guitar myself it was a starter guitar really i got a year or so back and its alright for the money ive also got a gretch new yorker acoustic thats the one i do my recordings on,im thinking of getting a fender california the electric acoustic one,ive heard there great for surf guitar
Hi Brian, I have my Strat set up for .11's I prefer thicker strings in general, although I wouldn't recommend you go up to .12's if you're used to .09's, for example. Go up 1 or two gauges for the sake of both fingers and the guitar! IMHO, tremolo picking on the lower strings (a surf staple) sounds better on thicker strings, as does a slightly higher action than is currently in style - this ensures that notes can ring clear when you play with a strong pick attack.
That first progression is tricky. You can play E minor pentatonic over it, which sounds typically surfy for the major chords but dorian when you play it over the A minor. It's really just changing key when it hits the A minor, though, so the most successful lead would probably reflect that. Did you have a melody for it when you made this? Update: It's in part 3! Cool song! You nailed it.
JoeDocMusic, what are other surf chord progressions that surf music used besides I-IV-V or Descending chord progressions? which surf songs broke away from the normal stock chord progressions? any other chords used sides stock major, minor, dominant chords that surf guitar music used any jazz chords?
ARE THE FRETS ON YOUR GUITAR "JUMBO" FRETS? THEY DO LOOK BIGGER THAN THE USUAL STANDARD SIZED FRETS!.... THANK YOU, VERY MUCH FOR THESE INCREDIBLE LESSONS!!!! THEY'RE SO GOOD!!! MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
I don't know why, but Im in love with the sound of the surf guitar. I don't know how to play real instruments and I don't own any. I wish there were some VSTs for this!
Very nice man. Hey I wanted to ask you I've been trying to use the pick for playing but it's been hard to get used to it. Is it better to use a pick or should I keep playing with my fingers?
I say go with what feels best to you. There are loads of great players who play with fingers only, and it's likely to give you more of your own unique sound, too :0) cheers, joe
Akaimayn I was thinking the same thing I have a foot pedal/fuzz pedal and i coudnt even come close to it i think its a fender guitar, there a surf guitarists wet dream aha this dude is a great teacher though
Thank you for the surf lessons! Any advice for noobie Strat owners on string gauge/brand, action setup (string height, etc.) to get a decent surf sound? Poking around on various forums, it seems that surf players favor pretty heavy strings (12's and higher). Am having my Strat setup in the next few days. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
Are you sure it’s not a Bm to C on Pipeline? When I play just B5 to C5 it works fine but if I play the whole chord it seems to me it should be a Bm. Not sure if it’s written correctly so apologies
Way cool man thanks! I’m just getting into surf music and theory and some of this went over my head but I’ll try to get there. The pedal that repeats what is that called?
I cagree... I used to listen to them with my brother non-stop. My song "Atlantic Astro Cumulus" is an homage to those wonderful surfers of the sliver strings....
Link updated! DVDs are available, with new material coming soon. The last few years have been dedicated to developing a line of guitar pedals :D cheers, joe
Okay, thanks. I've got HSS strat, so I can switch to front bridge coil + middle coil. :) Aaaaaand the last thing. Could you please write down a list of songs you've played in this video?
All these years of watching guitar Vids..your camera angle is genius.
totally genius. so weird at first, but makes perfect sense.
Totally agree
Not for lefties 😅
Like your realistic camera point of view.Easier to see chords.

And I really love his lap
i like the view of the neck in play..,
I wish more videos did it like this.

I'm left handed...standard videos are great for me, just like looking in a mirror. This angle freaks me out but I can understand your joy.
Genius...filming the lesson from above...the way it looks when you are looking down on your guitar....easy to follow
i was a little hesitant at first but this camera angle is actually super duper helpful --- thanks for a great tutorial.
Wow, this guy is genius. Camera angle makes it so natural and easier to learn!!

Thanks for the amazing tutorial!

This is really great. Great quick examples with high-level correlations to the Nashville number system and chord progressions. Love it.
Yes - the Boss DD-7. I used it to sample the rhythm figure for the example later in this segment.

hey really nice video ! what chord are you playing around 4:27 ?

Hi,
How you have the back sound like the sound of surf?
hey! question for you, what pedals/ amps are you using to get that reverb/echo sound?
Akaimayn Hi, the echo is a Malekko 616 pedal, and the reverb is from a Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue amp. Glad you dig, best - joe
www.joedocmusic.com
thanks for your help!

Hello! What effects you used in this video?
I think for this one I actually had a fuzz on, but the gain way down... then into a delay and reverb.

what is the opening chord?
awesome tutorial man!

Does Surf music use the Minor Pentatonic / Diatonic scale? Or Dorian?

Wow i learned alot. Thank you
what pedals are you using for reverb or is that all amp. looks like a tera echo?? sounds great whatever it is
It was amp reverb, but I also added a bit of stereo delay in mixing to widen it up a bit. cheers, joe

bridge+middle or middle pickup?
