George often sounds like this when he speaks in the evening online. I think he might have a problem. It’s bad form and not very smart. That interviewer looked pissed to me.
Not particularly insightful. Quite a few better out there. Also, the idea that Israel can struck at one of it's neighbours without serious retaliation is somehow naïve
“I had no idea that Iran was playing with Hamas.” - to my mind this bit of abject ignorance immediately disqualifies Dr. Friedman as a commentator on this conflict. Iran’s funding and equipping of Hamas has been well known for decades. He is a complete ignoramus on the subject it would appear.
I agree with George Friedman…. The operation was too well planned. It was impecable. Strategic intelligence… maybe Putin. It was well planned over 2 years…
Iran’s using Palestine and Hamas to disrupt negotiations between Saudia Arabia and Israel (and, by extension, USA). The ME is a power struggle between SA and Iran, with everyone in the ME either a pawn, taking sides, or completely ineffective.
In certain situations, the U.S. will provide air defense, air and navel support, and intelligence. Already the US has shot down missiles and drones and is providing intelligence.
As he states: It is very hard to let go of believes you built up over an entire career. He is still brillant, but also seems to increasingly be unable to see changes happening. It is obvious when he envisions future development and completely ingores the influence of global warming.
the normalization of relations with the arab world is an important dynamic because Israel doesn't want to disrupt that progress, but they also want to punch back at Hamas. So it seems like they and the rest of the world really need to use cooler heads with providing a response. Sure they need to get revenge and hopefully save the hostages, but they also want to make sure that they don't go too crazy doing it that would jeapordize their past and especially future peace process with the muslim/arab world.
I usually like Friedman, but he was saying allot of nonsense on this video; u cannot 1300+ people getting slaughtered and look the other way (hostages or not) its nothing to do with desprate. And about Hamas not being capable that he didnt expect it and Israel neither; its untrue its known they were upgrading their rockets (longer reach) all the time for years already and getting more capble missiles systems ATGM etc
There are a lot of Sudanese mercenary fighters among the ranks of Hamas. Hamas benefited from the black market of Ukrainian untracked arms and mercenaries, and maybe ex-wagner personnel. @@slowtine

Thank you for interesting and thoughtful analysis. 18:24 But "taking risks" against the wishes of your own people. And "getting hammered" by an outside alien entity. Are two very different things. However hard they get hammered, it will only make the leadership in those countries stronger. And USA and Israel can't hammer in all directions all at the same time. Israel and USA are too weak to invade Iran. Maybe they are strong enough to invade Syria. But that would get grisly and would risk open war with Russia and even Turkey. So Israel and USA are left to "hammer" by air strikes. And that will only weaken them politically and diplomatically, if their targets refuse to back down.
I want to address some of your points Mr. Friedman: 1. Saudi Arabia was working with Israel, but this entire skirmish is a play between Saudi and Israel. It is clear when you track the movement of Hamas leader when he traveled between Riyadh, Moscow, Beirut, etc.. just a few months before the start of the war. 2. Why is it so surprising to you that "Sunni" and "Shia" countries can cooperate? 3. It was "someone else who decided to build an Arab army"? if that is the case, how come the mighty Israeli intelligence could not pick up on any of that? which ever way you want to frame it (it seems you really can not accept that there is a cooperation between Iran and Saudi), it will sound embarrassing to Israel. 4. "Israel is nuclear power". Yes, but illegally under international law. You pass that so easily as if nothing is wrong with that statement. 5. You say that Israel cares about hostages yet 2 days ago they literally said they will bomb Gaza, with little regard to the hostages. "The wrath of God" is falling on Gaza. Please watch non-western news outlets and stop victimizing the settler Israelis. 6. How do you define an Israeli? if almost every European country sent warplanes to save their nationals. How does it not add up to you by now? 7. At moment you describe the Israeli military as competent then you describe them as frustrated. 8. "Hamas was training in the desert somewhere". Are you serious? have you seen the topographic map of Gaza? you are so relaxed with the idea of an almighty apartheid that you thought the spirit has been finally killed. Glad to hear that you are surprised/shocked. 9. "We know some Arabs knew this was happening. Why didn't they stop it?" Can you be more biased? you think every country cares for a savage colonial country like the US does? You are surprised US/Israel allies have some sovereignty left while UK, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, France all gave in to the Zionist lobby? Please climb down from the colonial ivory tower you live in. It is hard to study and observe realist geopolitics when you are detached from reality and live this high up from the ground. Let me explain some Realist Geopolitics to you (something I do not find in this channel because of how biased it is): It is a rare instance in time when the Saudi interests align with the Palestinian. Yes, there were negotiations between Saudi Arabia and Israel and they are disagreeing about the final details of the euro-arab-indian railway that passes through Saudi, Jordan then Israel. Now, here comes the part that you will never believe because all countries must be, how the US raised them (using military coups, sanctions, Mossad/CIA assassinations, etc...) , good loyal satellite states to the US and Israel: Under Chinese and Russian inspiration, the Iran-Saudi deal was struck and lines of communication were restored. Saudi saw the negotiations derailed with the Israelis, and they observed how the Ukraine war, they decided to bring the war to Israel for the following reasons: 1. Saudi, by taking a stance and supporting the Palestinians in this conflict, have naturally won the moral, islamic, and anti-colonial high ground in negotiations with Israel, thus can now demand more concessions. 2. Bringing the war to Israel is the greatest favor to Iran (no need to explain why), and to Russia, because Israel, to the US, is a million times more important that Ukraine. Thus, Israel's support will eventually affect the supplies and funding Ukraine gets from the US. If the US wants to keep drying itself for Ukraine and Israel, Russia and China will be the top beneficiaries. Thank you for reading.
That's how it went, my friend. :) The day the Saudis started to talk to Iran again I told my boyfriend that Israel will be history, soon. ^^ Friedmann IS biased, he always was. But he gives great insight into the us-israeli thoughts. ;)
Hamas essentially committed suicide for the Palestinians in Gaza. The reason for this is because they live in a prison with no way out. Israel bears responsibility in this regard because they have refused to deal with the issue. Decades of oppression have repercussions. Of course, none of this represents justification just reality.
Mr. Friedman says some are Sunni and some are Shia. One excludes the other. And isn't that exactly the MAIN reason. That Iranian Shiites get rid of a large number of Sunnis!? In this, Iran and Israel are allies, but all the time, just for the public, they clash and "hate" each other. Their goal is the same.
