Ford destroyed the Mustang in the 80s. I do love this thing. If it were to come out today, it would be an ev that would take 12 hours to charge, and you'd get 2 hours of run time. OH, and don't get it wet!
I saw an older UA-cam video of the boat unloading from the ramp. Glad to get a little more info and see the inside. I think it is very cool that he has taken such good care of something his father originally bought. It is a very unique setup. I don't think it would pull out of the boat ramp we have at our nearest lake. Since the van is really just front wheel drive.

I love the whole idea of this boater van. I thought it was an individual custom van. When I found out there is a whole fleet of them produced I was in shock. I wish they continued making these models. 👍❤
this guy lives down the street from me and i remember the older youtube video on this van boat. i was cruisin the neighborhood and came across it and instantly recognized it from the older video of him launching it at lake mead. its cool to finally see inside of it.
The design had a real weakness in only powering the front wheels, which badly affected sales & therefore so few were built! Their inability to pull themselves up a slippery boat-ramp made it difficult launching/retrieving anywhere but at a calm lake with a consistent water-level. Maybe he should try retro-fitting sealed electric-motors to the rear-wheels of the 2nd vehicle to make it a hybrid, not only overcoming the problem but making it more economical to run?
I saw one of these back in the 90's, the owner said that the front wheel drive for him wasn't such an issue as the finding a boat ramp long enough to launch. It has to be lowered far enough into the water for the transom to float which is difficult because of the long wheelbase and that it sits quite a bit higher than a normal trailer (with the engine down there was still a good 8" between the skeg and the ground) . He also said for steeper ramps he would just have his wife give a little push with the boat motor and use the momentum to continue up the ramp.
Yes I'm glad you pointed that out. I had suspected it was only FWD due to the fact I could see the big front differential, yet from the limited footage I could see, it appeared as if the rear axles were dead. So thanks for confirming what I suspected. I wonder what kind of transfer case it runs to only provide power to the front axle. I wonder how difficult it would be to make the forwardmost of the 2 rear axles a live axle, run a traditional 4wd transfer case, use a 2 or 3 piece drive shaft with carrier bearings. It might interfere with the hull of the boat. Your suggestion of using electric motors to drive the rear axles is a good idea. Theoretically, you'd only need power to the rear wheels in brief situations, such as pulling up the boat launch... what about using a hydraulic drive system and a power take-off off the transmission. Certain tractors and agricultural equipment use hydraulics to rotate their wheels for low speed high torque applications.
@@christianfritz6333 I'm not well versed in some of your terminology, are you saying you need a steeper and longer boat launch ramp opposed to standard boat launch ramps?
