I went to a church conference this year and I had a journal I would take notes in as well draw. Someone looked across my art and they were like, "Are you a furry?" "Yeah." "Me too." And that is how I met my first furry in the wild (excluding school).

I have a few furry stickers on the back of my car and I came back to it one time in a car park and someone had left a note under the wiper that said “Hey fellow furry” That was pretty cool haha
My most memorable "furry in the wild: moments were back in college, in the middle of a lecture hall, somebody related the course material to something furry (it's been a couple decades so I forget the specifics) and when he said "furry" I did a FULL BODY SWIVEL to try and figure out who it was. LOL
Other one was when I first got my fursuit head and a secondhand set of paws a few years ago, and was at an outlet mall looking for a long sleeved shirt with good airflow to hide my arms. Employee was trying to help me out and asked what specifically I was looking for and I tried to explain without really EXPLAINING, you know? Like yeah well there's this convention coming up and I need to cover my arms to go with this costume that's already gonna be pretty hot so like, anything that won't heat me up more and she's like "OOH what kind of costume?" And I'm like "Oh uh. Well this may sound weird but uh. It's a wolf." "OH YOU'RE A WOLF? MY SON'S A DRAGON!!!" Turns out he often went to the same con I was headed to so she knew exactly where to point me after that. LOL

It has happened to me once. For me it happened when a girl was presenting her end-graduation-essay that actually was about furries. I had known her for a year or so but I just didn't know she was a furry. She apparently did great arts and had thousand of followers. Sadly I was to shy at the time for me to start talking to her. And I still haven't talked nor see her anywhere pretty much since then. It was also the only furry I knew about in the area after that

I was at work one day when my coworker, who i had known for several months turned to me and said, "this might be a wierd question, but have you ever heard of uncle kage?" Before then he had seemed like just another normie to me.
First time I met a furry was in my 4th period chemistry class sitting right next to me, he had some stickers that looked cute and I just had a general feeling, after class I went up to him and asked him about it and I was dead right, now we're close friends and he helped me get over my insecurities about being a furry in public x3
Last weekend I was driving down to Dayton down I-71 when I passed by a Chevy Equinox that had both Nomad Complex stickers and a license plate dubbed "Pupp3r" on it XD
I am still hoping to find out who that was!
I know of one furry at my college, but I call myself a low-key furry and there might be others like me. I really want a fursuit, but I'm in college and my parents would think it's weird, so I will probably wait until I'm out of college.
I was at a pretty high end Magic tournament and saw someone in a Hyena Agenda shirt, and between rounds I found him and was like "Cool shirt, man" and instantly we were sharing our sonas and whatnot, and this man kept multiple laminated badges of his sona in his backpack even when not going to furry events just in case he met one and it paid off that day XD
Speaking of Magic, there are some people in my local area that I know through Magic who I've seen wear furry shirts, and I haven't said anything to them, but I'm pretty sure they know that I know.
I've worn con shirts and had people in the store or at university go "Oh I love your shirt" and my immediate response is "Thanks, do you know what it's for?". Most of the time people don't know, but I've had the odd person be like "yup" and boom, instant conversation.
When a furry goes to the wild lol
I wear furry t-shirts in public on purpose and the reactions range from nothing to someone shouting “Hey Furry!!” across the food court of a mall lmao. The grocery store we go to has at least three furries that I know of working there and it’s to the point where they say hi to me now lol. Another way to spot them is subtle stickers on cars. I see the Phi Paw a lot and only furries would get that. There’s also not so subtle vanity plates, like there’s a Subuwu one around here. Also with the pandemic, wearing animal themed masks is a dead giveaway, especially when they’re Lemonbrat etc.
I will actually wear my tails to my job at hottopic and will have other furries come up and be like "Yo! Another furry!?" Or they'll ask where I got my tails/if I made them, its honestly super cool!

Second, I remember running into a furry at a mall last year and he was wearing a furcon shirt, which I don't remember where it was from (I think it was either Furpoc or ANE). I've been in the fandom for maybe 2 years now and my eyes have been opened. I see hints of the fandom literally everywhere!
Every time I see a rainbow paw print sticker on the back of someone’s car, I get conflicted on whether or not they are furry.
I remember I was on a public bus and saw someone wearing his fursona badge so I told him “I like your badge, you a furry?” he said “Thanks and yes I am a furry” and we became friends. It was my first experience and it felt so weird but good

I did not know before then they were also a furry. Would have never guessed! We’ve been great friends since! I think I also accidentally got my other friend into the fandom too

I saw a guy with a fursona pin and he looked at me and I looked at him and I grabbed my shirt and pulled it a little and nodded at him he smiled and nodded at me and we both knew that we were both furry's and we walked off and that was the end of that
I remember going to a galleria with a friend who takes my photos, then suddenly two teens came up to me wanting a picture with me and admiring my fursuit! ☺️ It was an incredible experience for me!

I've spotted furries in the wild 3 times (all adult women): once at a train station where I saw a girl with furry ears and a tail; once in a grocery store where I saw a goth girl with a tail (she claimed she wasn't a furry, but I think she was), and once in the newspaper where they had a picture of a girl wearing furry ears (it was a bust photo so I don't know if she had a tail). Of all the times I've worn a furry T-shirt out in public or took my MFF cooler to work with my lunch in it, never once has anyone introduced themselves as a furry because they noticed I was.
This kid at my school saw a yellow cat possibly another animal fursuit in Melbourne in a store. THEY LEFT THE STORE THE IDIOT-
You wouldn't be able to tell I'm a Furry IRL. I don't wear anything Furry related. In my room however, I do have a LOT of pictures of foxes. I also have this wooden rainbow paw-print thing hanging on my wall.
Twice recently.
Was in NYC, bouncing between 3 different meets (two ran by the same person) on the weekend of Halloween. I go to the Nintendo store totally on my own, not related to any of the meets. And I just so happen to run into Blizz and Galaxie after noticing Blizz's HA shirt!
Then in November my friend and I got on the train down to a furbowl, and this one dude with a.... to keep it SFW here, "Good" Dragon hoodie gets on at the next stop. I tap my friend on the shoulder and he is so surprised to see that, lol. Made a new connection that way.

Late comment but I think I've discovered a new funny animal stereotype and it is that they are always at theme parks. I think at universal studios maybe 2 people liked my wacky fox thing shirt. Also I was at worlds of fun and someone pointed out the sergal on my shirt (he mispronounced it quite a bit tho lol) and also one of the ride ops kept saying "meow rawr" when sending the trains out so that's a bit sussy.
I was in the mall with my family shopping and a bunch of people were dressing up like plague doctors and anime girls. Outside when we pulled up and saw two furries putting on fursuit heads and paws and tails and I thought nice. Then we go to the Halloween store and there they are, mainly telling in my moms disapproving face. They were very nice and I got hugs and pictures.

One time, like 5 days after becoming a furry, a guy in my digital art class said he just went to his first furry con, and I subtly hinted at me being a furry, and I think he got it but I'm not sure
alright so I have a funny one. One time when I was going into an adult novelty store I decided to wear one of my Nomad Complex shirts cuz I was hanging out with one of my furry friends, but cuz also why not it's a cool shirt. So when I got up to checkout the cashier looks at my shirt and she's like "oh that's a cool shirt. is that your fursona?" I got a little shocked as I'm thinking to myself "oh ok she's a furry to, and we just so happened to bump into each other into an adult novelty store?" I found it really funny that, that happened but I'm also not surprised haha!

how i do it:
building a frame from wood, to hang up some furry related pictures, like a cheese grater and a racoon, a cheese wheel, a toaster, the chemical formula of e621, and a pic of the sea and the world salt writen in salt.
then put it in a public place and observe the reaction of the people
i did this already.
One time me and my family went to Spirit Halloween, and the person at the cash register and someone buying from the store started talking about furry telegram chats lol
Yeah IDGAF I ain’t got no chill when it comes to subtleness with furry related stuff. I’ll randomly wear those animal hats that are like winter hats that have a face of an animal, But the most dead giveaway is when it’s not too hot out I’ll just wear full on animal onesies. With the ears and tail etc. Definitely no mistaking i’m a furry when I’m wearing something like that. I have eight different ones so yeah I’m really into wearing the kigurumi’s as they’re called.
