A few judicious "hey" saved some people from bruises or crushed toes in those clips. I have fond memories of dodging pedestrisheep in the Lambeth, Southwark, the West End and Holborn areas, but am glad we only have the law of natural selection against crossing wherever you like in London.
A pleasant change to see a cyclist who isn't angry all the time. Pedestrians need to move around too and cycling in traffic was never going to be easy for drivers, cyclists or pedestrians.
This is pretty much the hardest thing I had to get used to when moving here. Pedestrians seem to pop up out of nowhere in the most unbelievable places on the busiest roads.
+Saját Zsíron I think I'm really good at reading the road, but some pedestrians add an unexpected element into the equation, as said by DrMorocho below they really test your reflexes :-)
DrMorocho Silvio Diego , yeah they sure add to the challenge but it is kinda fun for a traffic loving cyclist like me. Fun and a bit terrifying as they are more vulnerable than us.
Why do people not look when crossing a road. I was taught that as a child. I bet if we had some sort of tank that didn't stop and just flatten these people, others would quickly take road dangers seriously.
+Silvio Diego the yay you say definitely gets there attention (the stupid high pitch horns some cyclist use winds people up or makes them freeze and or some times continue running into there doom)
Silvio Diego Warrington area cycling is not as much a thing around here, but there are lots of drop curbs to exit and get back onto the road so norm not a problem cycling around here as long as your playing nice with other road users, (they also been removing a lot of partition on crossings so less pinch points)
All this shows is that everyone is in a hurry, everyone should look out for dangers on the roads. Pedestrians crossing, cyclists both motorised and paddle once weaving in and out of traffic or jumping lights as well as other motorists in their vehicles trying to look round for all dangers while driving. I've seen many videos posted by cyclist who hate motor vehicles (excluding motorbikes) where they've pointed out mistakes by drivers but ignored or gave an excuse for riders going through red lights at crossings.
You are one in a million very careful and have an understanding of the world around him . Cyclist are getting a bad name because the ride very fast and quiet people just don't see them coming. Some use the camera just to make a video and the ruder they are they think it makes good viewing well it's shit. Well done to you very enjoyable video.
When are the authorities going to take these cyclists OFF our streets??....or do we the pedestrians have to take these cyclists OFF our streets ourselves.
Well done for being such a nice guy and letting people cross, for me it depends on the situation. If people are waiting to cross I let them go with an "no please, after you." if they step out in front of me doing 20mph + without looking I say "LOOK OUT!" Or "GET OUT THE WAY!"
It’s not the IDEA of cycling that is unsafe regarding pedestrians, it’s the fact there has been ZERO intergration between cyclists and pedestrians. If we are going to be a more cycle dependent society than a new set of regulations and codes needs to be established so that cyclists and pedestrians do not pose a threat to each other. With cars there was the green cross code as well as pedestrian crossings. There was effort to separate vehicles and pedestrians as well. There was even a brief attempt to separate cyclists in the form of the short lived pedway network.
I've noticed pedestrians practically worship me when I stop at a zebra crossing on my bike. They must be thinking "today my crush asked me out! And a cyclist stopped at the crossing I was on! -tis a beautiful day"
While working in Egypt I was told if I injured a pedestrian while operating any kind of conveyance I would be liable. Should that person die or be unable to work I would then have to support their family. The reason being is walkers were on this land before machines of any kind. So I was very careful driving and luckily for me the reason was never tested.
Legally pedestrians have the right of way even when Jay walking. If you were driving and you saw a pedestrian crossing the road right in front of you would have to slow down and let them cross. This cyclist is clearly in the wrong. I'm a cyclist too, in case you were wondering.
was pretty sure I answered this comment but I'm not sure now if the text you wrote is slightly different... in any case: I agree pedestrians should have right of way and everyone including motor vehicles and cyclist should slow down. What I may not agree with is the hundreds of people who now a days are walking only starting at their phone straight and unexpectedly into the path of a moving vehicle. ..., and there's no such thing as jaywalking in the UK.
c ra Cyclists kill people. *LMAO*. You know how many car accidents there are in today's world? Now, compare that to cyclists accidents. Cyclists:1 Cars:50.
Yes, technically by law in the Highway Code if a pedestrian has already started crossing before the lights change, they have right of way to continue, before traffic gets to move. Another is turning. Turning onto a side streets, pedestrians automatically get right of way IF they are already crossings. However the Highway Code, and Green Cross Codes, state to look both ways, and give way to any moving traffic, and wait for a point in time the road is completely clear. If not use a crossing. (Sadly becasue there is no J-Walk Laws people cross the road when there is moving traffic, and no crossings.)
+kindness ARK i thought peds only had right of way at JUNCTIONS when they had started crossing? can u show me the bit where it says they have priority? thanks
+robinhood Thanks for your comment! I'm also under the believe that if you hit a pedestrian you're at fault at all times. I suppose exception would be that you can prove with camera footage that he purposely walks in front of you.
robinhood Silvio Diego Highway CODE 170: Give way to pedestrians crossing when turning onto another road at junctions. If they have started to cross, they have priority, so give way. Highway CODE 196 and 198: When the amber/yellow light turns on, you MUST give way to any pedestrians already on the crossing.
robinhood That is correct. If there is a crossing, or lights, or a junction they have priority. If they cross on a bit with no crossing then the road has priority.
As a cyclist I found that most motorists were careful with cyclists. Pedestrians often had their heads down for phones or just walked out into the street if they didn't hear a car.
Bad road designs that are rarely in favour of pedestrians. A pedestrian has to walk down the road to cross at lights or zebra crossings and even then they get hit. All drivers and cyclists must protect and be mindful to protect the most vulnerable people in public, the pedestrians.
People always whine at cyclists breaking rules, but just look at what everyone does. Pedestrians are you and me (figuratively speaking) and they do the damnedest shit here...
Cyclists complaining about motorists driving poorly around them and then they go and ride around vulnerable road users (pedestrians) with the same attitude as motorists 'get out of the way, shouldn't you be in your own dedicated lane, the pavement. Cyclists, you have brakes, if a pedestrian is crossing the road try using them rather than seeing the pedestrian as something that's slowing you down.
Funny stuff, the people act like the cattle do out here on the highway, just walk right out in front of you. Most folks don't ride on paved roads in fear of getting hit by 70 mph traffic or racing jack rabbits..... Looks like traffic there moves even slower than downtown L.A.
Can I use your video for my project on road safety in school? I will give you full credit and am not going to post any counter. Only show it to my class.
There are almost no bike lanes where I live. its mostly just sidewalks where you walk or bike. you can also bike on the road, but you should not as long as you arent biking as fast as the cars drive. Note: the sidewalks here is bigger than those in London :)
I always ride by the rule peds > cyclists > motorists > cars. Pedestrians are in least comfortable situation, hence they should be privileged most (within reason). Cyclists are after them, etc. etc. It's like filling city full of car-stones with smaller motorists, even smaller cyclists and pedestrians-sand.
If only we had that many bike lanes here. There hardly are any and cars aren't carefull at ALL about cyclists (or pedestrians). We are few because it's dangerous to bike alongside with cars (because drivers don't look out for cyclists), so car drivers don't pay attention to the few cyclists on the road because they're not used to them being there. Rince and repeat. Viscious cycle. Most drivers don't even recognize when cyclists do turn signals..
This is one of the nice things about bikes, a quick "sorry" and "no worries" and everybody is happy. In a car the only method of communication is the angry beep.
Whats the air like to breath in London when cycling? I live in Manchester and when I go into the city centre I feel all the diesel fumes affect my breathing
not much better I'm afraid, I wear a bandit mask all the time and when I wash it comes out black, so my assumption is that it caught some of the fume/particles.
Hi Emma, to show my video on national TV you need to pay a fee for non exclusive rights. Contact me on Twitter if you like more info: twitter.com/SilvioDeeJay
You do know, if you hit a pedestrian (even while they are J-walking) you are at fault, right? Unless the zone is 100% restricted (like a queensway, but then cyclists wouldn't be allowed either) to pedestrians, you will be found guilty for negligent driving.
You do know that pedestrians always have right of way when they are in the road? Yes even if they are complete idiots and cross when they shouldn't, the law states that they have right if way and you have to stop, not cycle through them shouting as you go
this video is from many years ago... I was young, angry and impulsive! but I have learned by watching my own videos and not liking the way I react... I wish everyone could watch themselves at the end of their day to see how bad one can be...
you make some good points, but what the highway code says, and what the courts says are two different things, namely - if you hit something, it's your fault. So all those people getting in your way, although they are wrong, you'd be liable if if you clattered them, as would they if they hit you. If you've been in court, you'd know that. It's all about proving liability.
+carl james That is true, most of the Highway Code is not Law, but guidance. The code stresses numerous times that the most vulnerable people on the road have priority over everyone else, which is why cars should slow for cyclists and everyone slow for a pedestrian in the road, at a crossing or not. If you remember that and drive defensively you should hopefully be fine, even if an accident happens.
The people on the crossing at 3:25 had a legal right of way. ALL road users must stop when there are orange Belisha beacons and people are waiting to cross. The idiots just after however is another story.
1:57 cyclists seems to fail to giveaway to pedestrians all ready crossing at a junction they have right of way, what is it with this country called London practically nobody apart from a few, seems to be aware of the Highway Code and looking out for the most vulnerable road users pedestrians Pedestrian in London need to start paying more attention and cyclists bit more patients Overall great cycling tho just a few occasions could of been a little more of giveaway like 1:57 I would of came to a stop instead of slowly creeping forward
0:25 this really annoys me. Flashing amber lights mean you must give way to peds that are still crossing. Far too many people, in a variety of different vehicles, think they can go because there is no red light. Regardless of peds still crossing. There is a pelican crossing I use sometimes by my house to take my kids the sweet shop. The amount of idiots in cars edging forward whilst we’re still crossing is unbelievable. People on the road can be so impatient for no reason. I really don’t understand it.
Hola yo creia que en Madrid España se conduce mal, pero no se para que tanta señalización en Londres ,si se la pasan por el forro, las indicaciones y no respetan a los ciclistas
I think 'Pedestrian Danger' would be a more suitable subtitle as cyclists at much greater risk - all things being equal, a cyclist will generally come off worse in a collision with a pedestrian (not that you'd know it from the way some people cycle). Also at ua-cam.com/video/TkXK_hgpLhI/v-deo.html pedestrians have right of way at junctions - if you'd been driving a truck and I saw you coming, I still would have stepped out.
I think cyclists need to be patient, everybody makes mistakes as you do in this video, you shouted hey to a pedestrian who was trying to cross the road, yet you are coming up behind a bus with a car in the lane next to you and slightly ahead, not only do you stop the old man in his tracks you cut up the car to your right and cycled through a very small gap between the bus and car, you were wrong to carry on should have slowed down and let the old man cross and not made that extremely dangerous manoeuvre of cutting up the driver, who is not expecting some idiot to be undertaking him which is illegal.
0:26 Lack of technical skill... Wobbly, slow takeoff... Poor timing around pedestrians.... Ill-fitting shorts providing a copious amount of butt wink... This guy knows how to party! :D
Like, always assessing the situation and not assuming good. I like. I'm a cyclist and I get real pd off with irresponsible cyclist. I believe bikes should have number plates like cars.
What are they going to do run into the pedestrians just because they are there pedestrians were there before and moving vehicle going to fast to react anyway didn't even Stop at a give way line I think they should be road taxed just because they are there on the road
I see you getting annoyed with pedestrians, really how many cyclists ride on paths built for pedestrians and cycle on them at full speed not slowing down when they see pedestrians or dog walkers, talk about pot calling the kettle, now you know how drivers feel when cyclists jump traffic lights and weave in and out of traffic trying to cross the road, cycle down one way streets the wrong way, cycle head on into traffic, cycle off the path right in front of you without looking, at give ways cyclists come off the path from the left in front of you, cycle without lights wearing dark clothing when the street lights are off, then shout at you because you nearly hit them, there are way more cyclists breaking road laws than anyone else, and you get annoyed when a pedestrian steps out in front of you really. maybe you should be filming other cyclists and shout at them when they do wrong, you would have a full time job doing it, they are a menace more of them deserve to get hit than they do at present, and i am sure figures will only go up through cyclists own stupidity. it's about time the police started fining cyclists instead of warning them.
what is the purpose of this video? i think this not good idea put your camera on and push the people. mind your on buisness.. you go to wales and cycling by your self.
It's cyclists like you that people don't lose faith in cycling. You're an excellent rider and very patient.
+Waz Raz thanks for your comment man! really appreciate it!

Although if you don't yell loud often people don't hear you, or in cars with windows up.
This is pretty much the hardest thing I had to get used to when moving here. Pedestrians seem to pop up out of nowhere in the most unbelievable places on the busiest roads.

It should be normal, but hey, hundred years ago they were marked as jaywalkers, thus stupid. The world has gone mad.
***** Jaywalking is completely fine, the issue is with those who do it without looking. Around here only the latter is considered stupid.
Why do people not look when crossing a road. I was taught that as a child. I bet if we had some sort of tank that didn't stop and just flatten these people, others would quickly take road dangers seriously.
Being stupid is easier than using brain cells
Ah, the 'natural selection aproach'. How practical... 😎
This cyclist is obviously one of those gentlemen riders who is aware of pedestrian vulnerability.
Congrats on 2,000 subs! Nice little compilation of vids. Of course some people are a bit silly but we all gotta look out for one another.
+Vincent de Guard Thanks! I think cyclist should look after pedestrians same way that we would like cars to look after cyclists.
+Silvio Diego the yay you say definitely gets there attention (the stupid high pitch horns some cyclist use winds people up or makes them freeze and or some times continue running into there doom)

When are the authorities going to take these cyclists OFF our streets??....or do we the pedestrians have to take these cyclists OFF our streets ourselves.
Well said. Again
If you don't like the way cycling is in London then maybe you shouldn't cycle in London
Silvio Diego might be one of the most polite and patient people I've ever come across. I'd be going nuts at some of these idiots.
Well done for being such a nice guy and letting people cross, for me it depends on the situation. If people are waiting to cross I let them go with an "no please, after you." if they step out in front of me doing 20mph + without looking I say "LOOK OUT!" Or "GET OUT THE WAY!"
I don't know how you put up with that.Seeing this makes me glad I live in a rural area.
Touchy little creatures, these cyclists. Head down. Full speed and shut ya eyes.. look at me mum, im riding with no stabilisers. Hahaha
At last, a cyclist who recognises that pedestrians in the road have right of way. A cyclist prepared to share the road.
It’s not the IDEA of cycling that is unsafe regarding pedestrians, it’s the fact there has been ZERO intergration between cyclists and pedestrians. the problem is, people want cyclists to act like vehicles, but they dont treat them as vehicles.
Good old Elephant and Castle, always seem to have weirdos around there with death wishes.

nice riding ..courteous and chilled , just how it should be :-)

if you show it to your class that is fine. As long as you do not download my video and re-upload it somewhere else.

Los peatones cruzan por lugares prohibidos, no miran siquiera si pueden hacerlo!!!! Que peligro!!!
All I can say is how remiss of the pedestrians to look without crossing...about as attentive as water buffalos
Awesome soundtrack!

Overall great cycling tho just a few occasions could of been a little more of giveaway like 1:57 I would of came to a stop instead of slowly creeping forward
at 30 seconds just about everyone ignored the lights
when should you go and only when it is safe to do so?
You only move when the crossing is clear, so none of them should have been moving because it wasn't clear!
1:13 And the woman threw her bag over the moon.
Pedestrians must be took drunk to look before crossing.

Also at ua-cam.com/video/TkXK_hgpLhI/v-deo.html pedestrians have right of way at junctions - if you'd been driving a truck and I saw you coming, I still would have stepped out.
Seems like pedestrians in London have a death wish..
You are a very polite man lol.
I see at 1:40 you didn't stop at double lines. It is compulsory, traffic or not. Bad boy
those lines means give way not stop. But if you have any links to articles in the highway code that say the contrary please do post them here.
You're a decent guy, possibly too much so.
0:26 Lack of technical skill... Wobbly, slow takeoff... Poor timing around pedestrians.... Ill-fitting shorts providing a copious amount of butt wink... This guy knows how to party! :D
i beg you not to go to the philippines you will scream everywhere,i mean everywhere
Don't be rude to cyclists, their organs may save lives one day.
Good to see that cyclist still don't have to slow down or stop when in a dangerous situation, just keep on peddling know matter what !
Like, always assessing the situation and not assuming good. I like. I'm a cyclist and I get real pd off with irresponsible cyclist.
I believe bikes should have number plates like cars.
I agree about assessing the situation and never assuming. Disagree about number plates on bicycles.
It couldn't possibly be the cyclist at fault! No cycling lane then no cycling simple
Lindin!
Beg you pardon?
London!
What really pisses me off is pedestrians using their phone while crossing the road this should be made illegal.
What are they going to do run into the pedestrians just because they are there pedestrians were there before and moving vehicle going to fast to react anyway didn't even Stop at a give way line I think they should be road taxed just because they are there on the road
cyclists pay the same tax as any driver on the road, now if you're talking about VED then that is based on CO2 emissions.
Silvio Diego what tax
ciclistas e pedestres tudo doido em ai vem falar mal do brasil
+alberto flora tudos doidos! :-)
