      just imagine them being super happy about the gift lol.. this happened when my wife decided to buy me the botta design uno 24 automatic which displays the entire day at a glance, couldn't help myself at first and laughed so bad, but I'm using it actually everyday since and couldn't imagine wearing a "normal" 12 hour watch again. ;D

      You don't have to worry much about the readability, you can read the time on the one-hand clocks intuitively.
      What I like about Botta Design watches is that the dial is not cluttered. That's why it's even easier to read the time. If there were umpteen different applications on the dial (date, moon phases, ...) then I would be with you. That would be rather annoying. But when the dial is so classically minimalist, you can read it very well.

    They’re not for everyone, but when you factor in the design, uniqueness, and quality, whether it’s the quartz, or the automatic, it definitely fills a niche. Even the watch snobs would have to have acknowledge that these are pretty cool.

    Bought my first single hand UNO watch back in late 90s from the Watchmakers. Klaus Botta continued the UNO and since then I’ve had 5 or 6. Love the design.
    Last 2 were automatic and Im sorry to say they only lasted 6/7 years. Charge for service was over 1/3 of the purchase price. Botta has doubled the price for an automatic Uno. At Eur 1400. Not worth it, but I still miss it on my wrist. Watches are fascinating tiny machineries and works of art(esans). ❤️

      That's right, but Klaus Botta was the first designer to develop this concept. Botta developed the one-hand watch and won several prizes for it. In 1986 he developed the one-hand watch and set off a trend with it. Several other brands followed this trend.

  • @masonr1666
    @masonr1666 2 роки тому

    I have to say I have been wearing a one handed watch for about 5 years now. I love them.
    A positive & negative aspect about them: their movement is silent. So, if the battery dies, you might not be able to tell. But you don't have the distracting tick, that is associated with most clocks/ watches.
    I don't own an Uno (I have a Kulte), and want something not as expensive as the Uno, but more expensive than the Kulte.
    The Kulte is about ±$60.

  • @FrankLavoy
    @FrankLavoy 3 роки тому +1

    Very impressive design. Those German watch makers know what their doing! I’m leaning more on a Nomos for any German watches on my wrist ... but it comes at a higher price unfortunately.
    At this price, the design is great with a simplistic dial but the double sided AR coating is a no-go for me; the top coating will scratch, regardless if it’s on a Sapphire crystal ... oh well 🤷🏼‍♂️
    Thanks for sharing!

    • @CCCharlson
      @CCCharlson 3 роки тому

      The size doesn't just depend on the diameter. The height of the case also plays an important role. The higher the case, the more massive the watch appears. So 40mm can have very different effects. You can have the Botta Design watches sent to you and try them out at home. So you could try the size. You can read that in the FAQs.

      @CCCharlson 3 роки тому

      For this quality, the workmanship and the materials that are used, I don't think the price is too high. There are also the quartz versions, you don't necessarily have to choose the automatic version. I think it's good that you have a choice at Botta Design and don't have to compromise on which model you want just because this model is only available in one of the two variants.

    Idk Marc, I think these are gunna be a tough sell. $500-600 for a $25 quartz movement inside a one handed watch... Or $1,500 for a handed ETA? If I was crazy enough to spend that kinda scratch on a mono hander I'd save up a little more and buy a preowned Meistersinger. Appreciate the video though. I still own the one hander from Red Star that I bought off you about a year ago. In all that time I've never worn it. Still has the sticker on the back but I can't bring myself to sell it. Atleast that one was only about $100.

    A question and an observation. Why do they start the morning hours at the bottom of the watch instead of the top which is the norm? Is there some kind of technical reason for it? Also... I see no difference in buying the quartz vs. automatic. The single hand sweeps on both models and there is no visual difference. Battery change vs. a service. Which would you choose?

      @@islandwatch watch guys are very sensitive to that - if it is unknown brand , price should be lower.

    Attractive and clean design but the concept itself is just 'form over function'. Most people want to know the time to the exact minute when looking at their watches.

      Definitely a niche piece. For people who want to make a statement: I don't (have to) care what minute it is!

      @@islandwatch Haha :) I would use the design of a single-hand watch with a single minute hand and a rotating disc underneath the main dial marking the hours. Simillarly to the date complication seen on e.g. Nomos Metro Neumatik, (which actually marks the date instead of the hour with a red disc). One could keep the the simple minimalistc design with proper functionality and legibility. Maybe on a single-hand Islander watch someday :) Keep up the good work, Mark!
