Man, i never thought i would talk about Kvarforth with people who werent already way deep in the black metal rabbit hole...its kind of a dark topic, but ye like many people have said, he has a really fucked up view of other people and I dont like him, HOWEVER i would never insult him or wish any harm upon him, cus its also very obvious that he himself is a very tormented person, i still remember those pictures of him from a live show he did way way back where u can see the HUNDREDS upon HUNDREDS of scars he has on his arms from cutting himself. So yes even tho he clearly is an asshole i wouldnt judge him as easily as everyone else seems to do, its clearly more complicated then that

I’m not even gonna try to do any psychoanalysis on this man because I’m not a professional, but I can to a certain degree relateto the way he acts sometimes when I’m in a frustrated mood as part of depression, you get so angry at yourself for not being able to end things or relate to the other seemingly happy people in your life, and you feel so much hurt from failing to respond “correctly” to their attempts to help that you end up just trying to make everyone else fuck off by just being the most abrasive, annoying and self-destructive person possible, because then you at least feel like you respond correctly to the way they treat you when they start to treat you like the terrible person you’re pretending to be. It feels to me like Kvarforth is kind of in a constant state of “angry dissociation” in this way, and for that reason I can really identify myself in his lyrics sometimes, and that’s why I like Shining as much as I do, in spite of all the misanthropy and self-destruction, because while it is genuine, it is genuinely performative.

Thank you very much for doing these thorough analyses; I think you do have a particular ability to make them appealing and enjoyable!
Something about Shining's content: I have seen the vocalist (who does write everything; lyrics and most of the music) talk about making people unconfortable, and doing things to that effect; but mostly when replying to journalists who evidently have no idea what Shining is about and just go and ask general questions. When talking with people who are genuinely interested in his work and ask interesting questions, he'll share many angles of Shining.
I don't justify his actions, or words for that matter, but the more you dig into it, the more you see how much a part of the artwork the person is, and viceversa; a whole world created for Shining, a whole world created for the character of Niklas. Which, to my taste, makes the whole thing much more interesting.

"Of course we support suicide, Shining support all that is negative in this bastard world of ours. We have had a couple of cases in the past with people whom have ended their lives under the influence or partially under the influence of our work and of course this is a true blessing indeed, yet we pray for increased numbers of fatalities."

This was nice. It kinda reminded me of a punkier version of Opeth (I feel I've been mentioning them a lot lately!), but the contrast between the ethereal, folkish beauty, and the dark, heavy, death metal parts is similar. This is rawer, and I think it suits the feeling better; too much refinement would ruin the effect. Going back through the old Shining tracks I realize that I've liked all of them, but they've all been extremely different. Probably a band (artist?) I need to check out too.

The people who say that Niklas (the vocalist) is simply speaking from the pov of depression speaking to him are awfully wrong though. Read his interviews, or watch a couple on UA-cam. He very clearly states that the objective of his music is to lure people into self destruction, and eventually commit suicide because he hates everyone and wants them to die. He also views himself as a sort of emmisary for Satan and doing the devil's work through his music. So the lyrics are quite literal in almost every song by them. He isn't trying to express personal feelings as a sort of catharsis, he just wants everyone to off themselves by listening to his music so yeah, he obviously suffers from mental illness and is kind of delusional and psychotic.

    • @Twitchswe

I dont wanna spam this videos comments with my opinions, so this is the last one lol, but yes you are 100% right that many people have tried to justify his lyrics in that way and they are just wrong as stated by Niklas himself, however i dont think people should jump on the hate bandwagon against him, i dont know if has some mental illness or just severe depression but he probably torments himself / suffers alot aswell

Is that still true though? Kvarforth had always been a massive edgelord and it still shines through in a lot of their merch. But I can’t help but feel that a lot of his lyrics seem deeper than simply ”I want you to kill yourself”.

But to anyone who has experience true clinical depression it's a pretty spot on description of one of the phases. But as you say, you can't explain away this loon with one simple rationale. He's both an insufferable, juvenile edgelord and a tortured genius. And a damn troll to boot. He's what you get when you mix poor mental health with copious amounts of drugs.

I'm pretty sure Niklas is talking in the behalf of the concept of depression here. Depression is like an entitiy here, aiming to further down a person in to the hole he/she is in gradually, until the moment of suicide. He's basically materializing the depression like a monster, living inside the host like a parasite.

The cover art for Halmstad isn´t even that dark, i mean the cover art for the 2004 compilation Through Years of Oppression that´s the real messed up cover art. About Nikolas kvarforth i found an interview and an interesting comment by someone named Fredrik Karlsson that said: "I grew up with Kvarforth in Stockholm in the nineties and I can tell you all he wants is to be like his father who was a deranged criminal. They are very much alike. If anyone is interested here's a link: ua-cam.com/video/OLaXGt9L_0w/v-deo.html Ps: My opinion is that the guy is an edgelord so Brian shouldn´t take the band that serious but hey that´s just my opinion but i inderstand if he wishes not to review any more songs by them.

While lyrics can be read in many different ways Niklas has been extremely clear about the fact that his intention with Shining is to make people destroy themselves and commit suicide which is why the lyrics are usually directed at the listener. He does suffer from mental health illnesses, as far as I know he claims he suffers from scitzophrenia, possibly from others because theres a lot of co-morbidity with scitzophrenia or at least thats what I've read, and he says he uses his own expiriences as basis for the lyrics but not as any form of therapy or such but to weaponize it against the listener.
That said, nothing and nobody ever says that one has to agree with Kvarforth's interpretation of his own work and the work can certainly be interpreteded in several different ways which, at least to me, are all legitimate. Nobody can force anyone to relate to music, lyrics, poems, literature, movies in the way that the creator intended to and everyone is allowed to have their own personal reaction and own personal take on the material.

The lyrics are clunky to translate because they are clunkily written in Swedish.
"Känslobank" is not a common saying.
Kvarforth is a strange guy. Both prentious and sincere at once. Also a huge troll who loves to use chock tactics and. It's almost impossible to know what is real with him. The only thing anyone who doesn't know him personally can be really sure of is that he is not at full mental health.

I was surprised you did a second song by them, but now I know that you didn't look up the singer yet. Well, all those stories about him being proud of himself when people kill themselves after listening to Shining? It's all true. Personally I file Shining in the same category as Burzum; love the music and respect its importance, but strongly dislike the artist.
