The vocalist of Primitive Man said something when they were criticized for their extremely misanthropic lyrics, and I think fits here too:
"You guys want the craziest music, but can't handle it when it's made by crazy people."
Yes, Niklas Kvarforth is a weirdo, a clown, a self-destructive piece of work. But Shining is really unique, and nothing sounds quite like it. I don't need to agree with everything that band does or sings about to be enjoying their music.
Not throwing a shade at you Bryan, or anyone in the comments. I don't even like the band that much.

This. I have made my peace about the fact that my favourite genre of music can contain some messed up people. 99% are just for the show but there are some who are genuinely bonkers.
But they are free to be crazy for all I care, as long as their music is good and their... issues... stay within the realm of music.

Niklas Kvarforth is really a vocal savant, he’s been doing this kind of crazy shit for years and seemingly without damaging his voice, a great composer too. Sometimes I think people tend to forget that this is “extreme” music, the people listening to and making it are not typically the most chipper, grounded folks with great mental health and healthy life philosophies. One can obviously make of that what they will, but I think it would detract from especially the artistic quality of Shining, but also from DSBM in general if the lyrics weren’t as misanthropic and angsty as they are, you can only get so far with the expression of emotions by just “exploring” them, embodying them is a natural next step.

I think that if you are listening to black metal and expecting a positive message then you are fooling yourself. The only positive message that you will sometimes find in black metal is self empowerment through the elimination of weakness.
That is not to say, of course, that black metal isn't a positive experience to the fans of the genre, some people revel in the darkness of night and the icy cold of winter.
This is music made by people with a very specific mindset for an audience with a very specific mindset.
I find that it's very comparable with 80's ultra violent gory slasher horror movies, it just isn't made for the general mainstream audience.

  • @thegrimner

Yeah, totally understand the reaction on this case. Not all portrayals of negative emotions and feelings are created equally. We can take for example Anathema, who do have some pretty dark and sorrowful lyrics but you can see come from a place of expressing the sentiment rather than outright condoning it. Especially when one knows that one of its main composers does struggle with depression daily, you can see it as its outlet which, in many ways is quite cathartic for both artist and listener.
Even satanism has grown to become either shlock horror for about 90% of the bands or it transforms into something else in many cases a metaphor for rebellion, like Emperor or Ulver do, more an adversarial opposition to christianity in a philosophical sense than an outright embrace of hate. SOme even turn it on its head quite brilliantly, like Zeal and Ardour, who sing about slaves becoming devil worshippers as opposition to the society of their oppressors. Or, outside of metal, DIamanda Galás has very, very dark imagery and metaphors which often involve satanism, but which is in turn used as a critique of religious bigotry during the Aids Pandemic. Or Lingua Ignota's very violent usage of imagery of assault. Not all of these artists are metal, but the broad point stands that not all portrayals of a dark subject matter necessarily translate into an endorsement of that subject matter and that applies to a lot of black metal, too.
There's no catharsis or expressionism on this song, though, and their main guy Niklas Kvaforth is kind of on record promoting self harm. Son't write off the name Shining, though, there is a norwegian band with the same band (usually distinguished by having (Nor) after the name) who play some rather interesting metal influenced Jazz.

although this is a good track, Total Utfrysning from the same album is my favourite. It's almost 17 minutes, a prog black masterpiece with a stellar ending. You should check out.. Soul crushing stuff. :) and that flute/string sounds you mentioned is mellotron i suppose. The frontman, Niklas is definitely a highly disturbed man, but at least his music gives at least a cathartic feel, he channels his negative emotions or upbringins within his music instead of harming others with it. And he's quite a musical genius considering the genre he's making music in. He has quite a vocal range, if you would look his all discography.

I want to offer another perspective to the lyrics and themes of this kind of music which will, most likely, sound really odd to many people but I hope that it will help people understand why there are people who enjoy this kind of material.
I personally know people, people who do suffer from mental health issues ranging from pretty bad to extremely bad, who find comfort in this kind of material, including Shining, something I can also attest to even though I do not much like Shining as such, partially because I find Kvarforth an despicable character as such, or at least the public persona he puts forth. I cannot explain why this kind of music and lyrical material can be comforting or feel good but I do believe that at least partially it has to do with the fact that when you are in really deep pit where you really don't see a way foward, a way out or any sort of future, that reality really feels like it is nothing but suffering, then you resonate with this kind of material and there is comfort in that other people struggle with similiar issues or at least have expirienced similiar things, even if the lyrics ostensibly try to push the listener to be harmful to themselves. It is something that actually acknowledges and openly talks about these topics in a world where these things are either issued or glossed over, where people still struggle to even accept that they have mental health issues let alone be open about them and where mental health issues do carry a stigma which makes people afraid of how people will react to them if they are open about them, for example doubting if they can find a partner because they suffer from mental health issues, that because of those issues they are toxic and people will abandon them or avoid them if they are open about their issues. In a world which is in lot of ways still openly hostile towards mental health issues something like this that at least acknowledges that such struggles are a reality even if the approach is less than positive can be really comforting. On other hand, the less than positive approach is also something that has, at least for me, been thing that has made things comfortable because when one feels really hopeless hearing someone tell that it gets better feels really, really pretentious and makes one feel like the person telling that doesnt really understand what youre going through while someone who says, yes, this is how it really feels clearly understands it.
While I do not like Shining too much and prefer other dsbm acts I would say that this kind of material has made a positive impact in my life and I do think that my life would have been far more difficult without such material in it. I am sure some of the people I know would agree with me on this.
As for the latter part I do find it pretty questionable whether or not lyrics or music can actually influence a person to do something to themselves or otherwise act. Could something like this make a well adjusted person harm themselves? I highly doubt so. If someone feels like harming themselves due to this kind of music I would suspect that they had issues before they found such music and that it might have acted as a catalyst but on other hand, if person is willing to harm themselves then can't pretty much anything act as a catalyst? Can someone really show that person wouldn't have done something to themselves if they hadn't listened to record x y or z?
And lastly, sometimes such things can, at least to me, sound like really childish shock tactics. Theres a band called Make a change and kill yourself which might sound shocking to someone but since I have been listening to extreme metal since I have been 15 years old it just sounds like a really lame, boring attempt at being shocking and controversial with not much depth behind it's shock value.

yeah, i respect his opinion and such but trying to find positive meaning in an art form all the time hinders the true meaning. True artistry is a form of self-expression. It does not need to send positive vibes or message in any way. And i highly doubt hearing lyrics related to self-harm or in general misanthropical cause the listener to indulge in such acts. In that case, i should embrace satanism or evil ans such by the sheer amount of black metal i have listened to this day. But i didn't.

This is a great answer. One of the reasons I started listening Black Metal was vecause It encarnated the feelings I was feeling in that age that no other musical genre can convey in the same way. And, God knows, It is goddamm relieving to say the least. Music saves, my friends. Even when is supposed to be evil and bizarre ( and this, undeniable, is outrageously filled with bad intentions and malignant resentment)...

Seeing the end of your video, the sad thing is that this guy reached his goal 100% with you, saying that he wants his music to make people feel uncomfortable, if they were happy to turn sad and ultimate goal would be to get people to kill themselves. Not saying you do the latter but he did make you very uncomfortable :D

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 роки тому +1

That....actually makes me more uncomfortable. I don't mind dark exploration in art but this felt like it went past exploration and hearing that their ultimate goal is to make music that drives people to suicide makes me feel icky having them on the channel and talking up their music. I'm not promoting them outright but I am extending their music to more people.
Thanks for the positive comments about my format though! My vids don't quite hit the big numbers but I'm happy with my long form approach, more niche song/band selection, and unfiltered opinion. Glad that resonates with people.

There are bands that are labeled as suicidal and/or depressive black metal and swedish Shining is one of them. I appreciate that they're not everyones' cup of tea, but I do like them a lot myself ever since V: Halmstad was released, it really opened my eyes. The vocalist made a huge impression on me with his raw screaming. I don't condone the self harming or the encouragement of the same, but I still enjoy the music, and as wicked as it may sound, many a melancholy song, or lyric, actually cheers me up if I have a bad day.
For some other favorites (other than the ones recommended by other commenters already) of theirs that I'd recommend to check out:
Mot Aokigahara (from their latest full length album)
Vilja & dröm (slightly faster song of theirs, at least the beginning part)
    Besvikelsens dystra monotoni

What can you say about the lyrics? Niklas is a wild dude and sometimes wild dudes make music with crazy lyrics. No need to get behind the lyrics, just go with the music. But if you're looking for positivity in the conventional sense this is gonna be a real tough genre for you.

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 роки тому +1

I don't always need positivity in general -- one of my fave concept albums is about a child who gets a demon stitched onto his soul and he has to grow up figuring out how to deal with, and sometimes giving into, all of the thoughts of this other entity. But there's a very clear line for me between exploring dark ideas and suggesting/condoning them. For me, this song crosses that line as does a lot of DSBM. I fully understand it isn't a subgenre for me.

These kind of nihilistic, self-destructive lyrics in black metal are more often than not used as an outlet to deal with negative feelings - at least that's how I interpret them. In the case of Shining however, the main guy behind the project has made it more than clear that his music is supposed to be a celebration and condonement of self-destructive behaviour. He's known for self-harming himself during shows and there have been claims of him handing out razors to the audience. He's pretty much black metal GG Allin.

This was a solid track. Genre is an interesting mix too; sounds like symphonic BM music mixed with more hardcore-ish vocals. It didn't really blow me away, but there was always something to enjoy whether it was the drumming/cymbal work or the riffs. As for the lyrics, it's often the case that people who actually feel like this get comfort from music that's about this. I think it gives them a feeling of not being alone, that there's someone out there that not only feels the same way, but is making music they like and expressing how they feel; and there's probably no better suicide preventer than knowing you're not alone. As GK Chesterton said in The Man Who Was Thursday: “Through all this ordeal his root horror had been isolation, and there are no words to express the abyss between isolation and having one ally. It may be conceded to the mathematicians that four is twice two. But two is not twice one; two is two thousand times one. That is why, in spite of a hundred disadvantages, the world will always return to monogamy.”

This is one of those bands where I ignore the lyrics. If you want BM that doesn't rub you the wrong way with its lyrics, try out bands that focus on specific lore or literature, like Summoning does with Tolkien or The Great Old Ones with Lovecraft. (Of course Lovecraft-inspired lyrics can be pretty horrifying in their own rights, but you'd be expecting that going in anyway.)

If you’re after high-fi black metal (or black metal adjacent) that doesn’t make you regret listening once you get into the lyrics, Cradle of Filth would probably be a good place to start. They started on fairly standard black metal but moved into more of a blackened goth metal sound, but it’ll likely still read close enough for government work. I can promise you no nazi content and no calls for suicide will be found within. Most of their work are concept albums, so you may not get the full picture of what’s going on from a single song, but I’m you at least won’t go into the tail end of the video excited at having found a new band only to have your hopes dashed.

The vocal style Niklas Kvarforth is doing here is a DSBM (depressive suicidal black metal) type of style where the screams and grows and snarls are generally more unhinged and tortured.
