There's a bunch of references that will go over K Boomer's head.
Wigs aren't worn in magistrates court.
Kenny Dalgliesh was a foot ball player.
We saw 70's/80's childrens TV stars Bob Carolgees and Spit the Dog.
Brian's entry music was the theme to 70's TV series Black Beauty, about a girl and her hero horse.
Ironside was a 60's/70's crime series where our eponymous detective is in a wheelchair.
The chippy/Ponderosa guy is 80's quiz show host Jim Bowen.

It depends on the court. In the lower courts, no, they don't wear wigs. The court that features in this episode is a Magistrates Court. It is the lowest level of criminal court and is generally for things like speeding tickets, and low level crime like a first time theft or something like that. The "judge" at a Magistrates court is called "a Magistrate". He is often a volunteer from the community. The Magistrates Court will also hear the more serious cases such as murder, but only to basically say "this is too big for us, so we're sending it to the Crown Court".
It's the Crown Court where you have the judges, juries and barristers. It's the Crown Court where you see the wigs.

I think I know what that "In Memory of Alan" is a reference to. There was a villain in Coronation Street called Alan Bradley, and he was killed by a tram at Blackpool. I think the date was the time the episode screened. Just guessing here.

If you haven’t already watch the spin off show called Max and Paddy’s road to nowhere, it’s absolutely brilliant and very funny with Peter Kay (who plays Brian) again as one of the main character’s called Max, one of the “knuckle heads” as you called them.😂
One of the funniest scenes in that was when they had a pig in their camper van, RV I think you’d call it, just the phase “how dare you” has me crying laughing 😂😂
I’d LOVE to see your reaction.

It's a Magistrates court, the Judge is only a part time judge and will have another job. Fun fact: there are no gavels in UK courts so if you see a British judge with one in a tv show or film they have got it wrong. The US adopted gavels from Freemason rituals into public meetings and government chambers and courts.

Greetings again from Scotland. Thanks for reviewing this great series. There's certain references that are peculiar to the UK. The flowers on the lamppost in Blackpool and Alan refers to a character in long running soap Coronation Street. The guy he meets at the hotel is Jim Bowen who was host of a long running quiz show called Bullseye. The music Brian comes into is the theme from a tv show about a horse Black Beauty. However, you don't need to know the references to enjoy a brilliant comedy. Enjoy.

Stephen Fry's talk on the difference between US and UK comedy is summed up here. US stuff is a wise cracking - aren't we terrific - proposition. Whereas we're all about frailty. I'm not saying one is better than the other but the contrast is stark.
