100 Year Old Safe Restoration Part 1 of 2

- Welcome to my channel. This week please enjoy part one of a two-part video on the Reliable Safe restoration. I believe this safe was made sometime after 1918 but probably in the 1920’s or 1930’s. There is a patent date of 1918 on the lever handle. It’s on the smaller side of the rolling safe types but still a very stout unit! It was made by The Reliable Safe and Lock Company from Covington Kentucky. I found this safe at an estate sale in Burlington, NC and it was originally sold by a distributor in New Bern, NC. The front is all original, but it was evident that the top, side and casters had been repainted at some point, making for a perfect “not all original” restoration. In the video I refer to the safe filler material as concrete, but I now believe it was a special mixture of clay and other materials developed for fireproofing.
I stripped all the paint off the case, treated for rust prevention, primed and painted. The inside was sanded to 220 grit and coated with several coats of shellac. The casters were removed, stripped, treated for rust, primed and painted. Please come back next week to see the finale where I restore the door, service the lock mechanism and complete the project.
For reference, some of the other popular brands of safes around this same time period were; Hall’s Safe, Cary Safe, Diebold safe, and Victor Safe co.

** Check out the spider running across the safe bottom at 2:38. There were two that came out of the casters and I'm positive one was a brown recluse! You have to watch were you put your hands when dealing with these old antiques! **

Great video. Glad you moved the paint stripping outside!
it was terrible!
Wow
Lots of work on this!!
Thanks! Stay tuned, more to come!
Thank you so much for this video. Gives me hope of doing the same to my old Victor safe!
Your welcome and thanks for watching. A safe has been on my list for a few years, I finally found the right one and just did it. Good luck!
Your patience, knowledge and desire for perfection is so impressive. I really love how you go through the steps so that even beginners can follow with understanding. Awesome result!!
Thanks Kate, appreciate you watching!
You got her coming along nicely Mr. David! I tired just watching you😂 that's a lot of work but man it's gonna pay off! Good stuff!
Thanks Vic, yep this one about kicked my butt! Check out part 2 next week.
I love big projects like this David. Looking forward to part 2. My grandfather had a safe similar to that one in his grocery store back in the 40's and 50's. Best regards, Bill.
Thanks Bill, part 2 will be out next Friday.
So far so good!
I agree
Thanks Magdad!
Thank you!
That is coming along nicely.
David, that's a cool project. I was waiting for that thing to just keep rolling all cartoon like🤣🤣 Nice use of the vise grips but seriously Fred no holder???? That smell of the aircraft stripper tells you it's working😅 Quality work brother and can't wait for part 2!!
Thanks brother. I know, can't believe I couldn't find the handle for that die! Probably in one of my junk piles somewhere. LOL. Next week for Part 2!
Another work your butt off restoration. I have one of those sand blasters I have never used I forgot I had it thanks for the reminder. Good job it looks great so far. Will you be using it in your house?
Thanks Dale. Yes it's in my house. Just going to use to hold papers etc for the fire proofing purpose. Part 2 coming next week!
Question for you, I have a 5 digit combination for an old safe made by Safe & Lock company. What would be the turn sequence for this old safe?
That is a great question! Not sure I can give you an accurate answer. For my project, I just did some research on line and then re-engineered the combo because I was able to see the dials from inside and watched the gates line up. This helped me with the numbers, but also the sequence of turns. I wish I could be more help, just not an expert on these.
