Necrotic Nick and Jammin' Jon go over the latest offering from Norwegian black metal/ blackened heavy metal legends Darkthrone with their new album "It Beckons Us All..." out now!

I saw Fenriz label this current iteration of Darkthrone's sound as "epic Norway". I seem to be one of the few that celebrates all of Darkthrone's sounds over their evolution. The one ingredient that has always been present is Celtic Frost.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I'm getting probably a bigger epic vibe on this one compared to the last few. There's some incredible guitar harmonies on this one and, as always, they don't skimp on the Celtic Frost worship.
If it were bread, it may be cornbread, but the meal is whipped first to homogenize it. But they serve it with a delicious butter, that, too, is whipped.
This review beckons us all.
Necrotic Nick- It seems like it kinda did lol
I very much appreciate everything Darkthrone does. I own everything they have ever done and listen to them quite frequently
Damn good review! Looking forward to hearing this album. I discovered Darkthrone with Soulside in ‘90 and is still one of my favorite albums of all time. I dig this recent stretch of albums and Astral Fortress was pretty solid. This one kinda creeped up on me and didn’t know it was released until this review!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I was really stoked for this one as I've really enjoyed the "riff worship" era of Darkthrone here lately. I've been a fan since the early 2000's when I picked up Total Death. While that's not my favorite by far I just kept snagging their albums and I love their constant evolution over the years. This one reminded me a lot of Old Star but with more epic sounding melodies on it. Yeah, I didn't see much promotion for it but I'm glad we could point you in the right direction, man!
It’s so good, and the drums sound incredible
Necrotic Nick- That guitar tone is filthy too.
Thank you for the great review! Darkthrone is one of my favorite metal bands over all. I really like the new direction they are taking and I'm curious to know where they're going. I don't understand the "fans" that seriously wait around for a return to trve kvlt. Reasonably it's not gonna happen. Same as the "when will you guys play live?" I just wish that more people would have more realistic expectations of things. That would save them so much anger and tears etc. I mean, either you accept or move on. I guess it's more to do with nostalgia than logic... 🤔
Im thinking of grabbing this for avant garde reasons at least. Last one was super minimal. Interesting releases. You guys do a wicked job on reviews!
Another banger from Darkthrone trve kvlt 🐐🐐🐐
Necrotic Nick- Agreed!
Are guy's going to do an update on the Dark Throne album ranking? There has been three new albums since you did that album ranking lol.
Necrotic Nick- Maybe one day way off in the future but we'd rather move on to different ones in the future.
Surely some of the Usurper stuff is also a good Celtic Frost worship band to acknowledge as well.
Totally agree, this album is a step up from few previous ones.
thanks for the review!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, the epic elements mixed with those Frosty riffs really do it for me.
The Underground Resistance and Old Star are my favourites of the newer era, their last one Astral Fortress didn't grab me as much, but I'll defo check this one out. Great review as per usual guys!
Astral Fortress took a while to grab me but once it did i loved it
Necrotic Nick- I love both of those albums. Astral Fortress was pretty solid but I've gotta say this one jumps out quite a bit more.
Darkthrone always just try to play music they like, whatever anyone else thinks, and it is always pretty solid and respectable. Always indebted to their heroes but doing it their way.
Necrotic Nick- I totally agree. I respect that honestly. They've been doing this forever and were pioneers of a huge scene at one point so if they want to just riff it up and put out whatever they want then that's cool. Luckily its also been really good.
And in case y'all aren't savvy, there's a new Ard (pronounced Arth?) album out called Untouched by Fire. It's a doom project by Mark Deeks of Winterfylleth in a unique style he's dubbed "monastic doom." It's got huge riffs, church organ, and choral, almost Gregorian vocal harmonies. Really epic stuff, and the lyrics are based on English history.
Necrotic Nick- Not familiar with that band... more curious how you get "Arth" out of "Ard" though lol. Sounds pretty cool though. I like Gregorian Chants in more doomy material so I'm pretty interested already. I'll check it out when I get some free time.
I've quite enjoyed this run of new album from Eternal Hails onwards, it's Darkthrone basically just doing what they want and sounding good doing it.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I'd go back as far as The Underground Resistance to this one. They've been doing a killer job incorporating all these classic heavy metal tropes into their Celtic Frost-ish gear they're also in here. I dig it and I'm glad they're kinda just having fun making music they feel strongly about right now.
I really liked this new Darkthrone album. I like all eras of the band from the death metal of Soulside Journey, to the black metal era from A Blaze in the Northern Sky to Sardonic Wrath, and the new era of Celtic Frost and Motorhead influenced era from the Cult Is Alive to now. This album I think is their best since Old Star and one of the best of their new era alongside Old Star and Circle the Wagons.
Yeah completelty agree. I like all eras. Only the last 2 for this latest album weren't that good to mee. Loved Old Star. This one is also not to fast which i dig.
Necrotic Nick- Same here. I generally enjoy something if not everything in some cases from all their eras and honestly this one is becoming a favorite of mine. The Celtic Frost riffage mixed with the more epic heavy metal harmonies works so damn well on here. This is up there with Old Star for me as well.
Darkthrone forever, you guys are great!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
They're still throwing in those Hellhammer low note bends. RUUUOOOGH!!! Bless 'em.
Necrotic Nick- Every time they bend a riff I feel like it just squeezes more filth out from it. I love that shit.
Great review guys! I loved the album. The riffs are great as always, but Darkthrone keeps getting better at songwriting as well. The songs just flow nicely here. In terms of Celtic Frost worship, I think this has the most CF Type riffs of all their albums, except maybe Panzerfaust, which has 2 "Transylvanian Hunger" type songs, but the rest is just pure Tom G Warrior riffing style. I very much agree with Jammin' Jon on the leveling issue, that is what came first to my mind when I heard the main riff on "Eon 3", which sounds way too loud. Other than that a great record. I'm still waiting for the Coffin Storm review guys :P
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I knew to expect riffs on this one but honestly I like the bigger sounding dynamics on this one. It's got a real epic vibe at times which they've toyed with before but I don't think it was as successful as it is on this one. I feel like Old Star has got a big Celtic Frost vibe to as well but yeah this one really lays on the Frosty riffage as well. I did the leveling issue a bit as well but thankfully it wasn't a deal breaker. I might still snag that Coffin Storm and cover it in a collection update in the future. There's almost too many releases to keep up with here lately lol.
Check out that Coffin Storm when you get the chance! If you love riffs, this particular record has just as many as the new Darkthrone! Once again…Darkthrone doesn’t disappoint!
Agreed, SO many killer riffs on that thing!
Yes, Coffin Storm fucking rules
The album was recorded at Chaka Khan studios in Norway😮
@@lexbeltran1354 yeah, top album
Necrotic Nick- I'm eventually going to snag that one. I've heard a lot of good things honestly.
I wish Darkthrone would go back to the A Blaze sound but I'm content with everything they've done. New album is no exception to that.
Necrotic Nick- Part of me does as well but at the same time I like what they're doing now and I have my doubts they'll backtrack at this point. Who knows though. Darkthrone has a lot of eras.
I prefer bands going forward, not getting trapped in nostalgia.
There is more variation in the vocals. I liked the previous two albums, but on those two Nocturno Culto's vocal lines seemed to be repetitive. So, this album is a step up on the two previous very solid efforts
Necrotic Nick- I think Fenriz might have been more involved in the vocals this time. Some of the chanty cleans definitely sound more like his kinda style and they play well off of Nocturno's "warrior groans". I do like this one a bit more than the last 2 but maybe not as much as Old Star though.
I finally got my copy of “Veneration of Medieval Mysticism and Cosmological Violence”
By INQUISITION
I’m stoked! You guys should review it.
Necrotic Nick- Trust me, you don't want me to review that because I'd just savage Dagon for most of it for having CP on his computer.
Fair Enough. In any case the
Album is great just like all
Inquisition albums. Sick riffs galore as usual.
Keep up the good work
With the awesome channel
Guys!
I'm glad to hear Darkthrone is continuing with the First Church of Celtic Frost approach. They've got a knack for it. Gotta check it out.
Necrotic Nick- I'm a sucker for Frosty riffage and these guys still know how to do that so well.
Another great Album from one of my favorite Bands!
Heavy Black Doom!
Great Review as always Guys!!
💀💀💀💀 / 💀💀💀💀💀
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
Trans Hunger is my favorite metal album ever, and Darkthrone is my favorite black metal band. I hopped on after Arctic Thunder and loved everything since and before. I even like Crustthrone
Trans hunger 🤭😅
Necrotic Nick- I prefer Blaze but I love most of this bands discography and Crustthrone is still pretty damn fun.
Very nice review! Will you guys be reviewing the new Inter Arma? Cheers!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Inter Arma review is up on Tuesday!
I'll blast it later on boys and well you know the rest! See y'all soon! 🤘
Thanks
@@thrallsofmetal yup!
@@thrallsofmetal just got done blasting this album and it's a 3 of 5 boys!
This reminds me of the first Ghost B.C. LP - musically anyway. And that’s a good thing imo 🤘loving this album!
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I can hear that as well and I still love that album.
What do you consider this genre? Heavy Black Metal? 🤔
Blackened heavy/doom metal always seemed fitting to me
Necrotic Nick- Blackened heavy metal seems appropriate. There's definitely elements of doom and I'd even say some desert rock in a way.
I think Darkthrone has moved to the spot bands like Motörhead occupy: it’s comfort metal for everyone because it is simple, kicks major ass and is supremely entertaining.
Necrotic Nick- I think you're right. They have their gear (or at least current gear) and they're playing it well.
These albums they've been cranking out lately are just so good. Easily my favorite era of Darkthrone. Nobody is really making comparable music that I know of.
Any plans to review the new Inter Arma? It is WILD. They went a lot of weird directions on this one.
Check out Malokarpatan, heavy/black as well but done WAY better than recent Darkthrone IMO. Even Fenriz raves about them.
@@g-man4744 love Malokarpatan. They definitely have their own thing going though.
Necrotic Nick- I love this run as well. My favorite "run" might still be the brief death metal run at the beginning (mostly for Soulside Journey) but ever since The Underground Resistance they've been on a tear of killer albums.
I wish I could get into this era of Darkthrone, but it just doesn't work for me. I think the last one I liked by them was 'Hate Them'.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I can see where this era isn't for everyone. I happen to dig it though since I'm a huge Celtic Frost fan and I love doom and classic heavy metal.
Imagine if they replaced all the guitars with bullroarers.
Necrotic Nick- It'd be interesting to say the least lol
This album kicks so much ass it should be illegal.
Loved the Celtic Frost vibe throughout this album, I also picked up a lot of nods to Maiden, Cirith Ungol and Candlemass!
4.5/5 from me. Easily one of my favourite albums of the year thus far
Necrotic Nick- Agreed. Celtic Frost with classic heavy metal harmonies? How can that be a bad time, right? Yeah, I think this might be their best since Old Star honestly.
Even stronger Celtic Frost vibes on this one, esp the vocals. I like this much better than the last. Just wish they sped up the drums some, but oh well.
Necrotic Nick- Dude, when that riff hits on The Heavy Hand I got huge Procreation of the Wicked vibes. The big 'ol nasty bend in it only cemented that vibe. Yeah, Fenriz has keeping things way more on the slow side hear lately but I liked that almost thrashy break on Bird People.
did we discuss Coffin Storm?
Necrotic Nick- A lot of people have hit me with that one honestly but I think we did as well. I still need to check it out either way.
I always liked Darkthrones evolution. There isn´t a single record I dislike, but there are a couple weak ones I do not go back to that often. I came in shortly after Arctic Thunder was released. I am overall more a Black Metal fan than a Death Metal fan, although I listen to both genres a ton. It´s just a small preference really. Arctic Thunder and Oldstar are modern classics in my book, whereas especially Eternal Hails and partly Astral Fortress were lacking. I enjoyed the latter for its doom leanings though. This is their most cohesive album of the decade so far. I still prefer Arctic Thunder, Oldstar and maybe one or two from their mid to late 00s Black n Roll Punk era, but this one is a step up from the past two albums. Arctic Thunder and Oldstar were composed 50/50, whereas Eternal Hails was mostly Nocturno Cultos brainchild and Astral Fortress was very Fenriz heavy on the composition. Especially the first side from Culto is killer, and the first track from Fenriz shows that he still is able to not just play Doom all the time which was a bit evident from the past two, three releases as well as the new Coffin Storm album (Which I sadly did not enjoy at all). The pair as well as their social media manager Roger were over the (funeral) moon when they promoted this album. I think since The Underground Resistance they haven´t been that enthusiastic. There are no bad Darkthrone albums, this one however will get more spins from me than the previous two, but probably less than their output from the 2010s. I´m just happy they still give zero shits about anyones opinion and play the music they want to play. No wonder they are sometimes dubbed the biggest underground band in the world. People who have been unhappy with their stylistic choices since 96 or whatever can check out Order of Nosferat instead. The Cult is (still) alive.
Necrotic Nick- I do like that this band is constantly evolving and going through different phases of their sound. While I don't like all of their albums I do like most of them. I kinda lost interest in the band for awhile but The Underground Resistance in particular really got me back into them and pretty much every album after that has been a riffy banger after that one. The crusty punk era was pretty fun but kinda hit or miss for me. I think that they're really making music for themselves at this point and if people like it that's kinda the added bonus.
Heya. Love me some new era of vintage Darkthrone. I don't wanna be a bummer, but you do this all the time and you actually skipped from reviewing the new DVNE? 😢
Necrotic Nick- This is most certainly the era of the riff for Darkthrone. We didn't have time Dvne sadly but I'll be covering it in a collection update at some point.
Surprised by this one.
Necrotic Nick- In a good way?
@@thrallsofmetal yes
This is the best production on that run of albums, it sounds really fresh and organic. The music is just "meh" for me though, kind if run of the mill riffs, lyrics are terrible and vocals just average, sections of songs just move without much thought between each other, it all feels kind of half arsed IMO. These guys know what they are doing but im sure they could do much better, they just don't need to and it sells. I'm checking out.
Necrotic Nick- I like it. It reminds more of the production on Old Star which I love. The drums sound a bit bigger and that guitar has a great, filthy crunch to it. Honestly, I just enjoy the old school riff worshiping sound here. While the riffs are super flashy they deliver solid hooks and I just kinda dig it. I know this era has been divisive for some but I enjoy it.
I have tried for 15 years to like Black Metal. It's just not happening. I love it when it's mixed with other sub genres but pure Black Metal is never been my thing. I tried listening to the classic Darkthrone album and I could only get through 30 sec. It's not that I don't like it, but rather I cannot stand it. I tried. I'll leave this for the corpse painted, church burning crowd.
I though this album was fine wasn't blowing away it had a few ups and down so low 2.5/5
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, this one is up there with Old Star for me so far. I really dig all the epic hooks on this one in particular.
I never got into these guys.
Necrotic Nick- Never to late to give them another try.
Ah yeah they put out some really sick rotred pus a fan indeed , couse someof their stuff is not so great however looking forward to checking this out 🤘🏼💯👉🏼☝🏼🙂
Necrotic Nick- Honestly if you dug Old Star I think you'll probably dig this one. Kind of a similar vibe albeit a bit more epic at times.
@@thrallsofmetal i did I got into old star , and after checking this out ...I find it a fine piece a rotted pus aye 🤘😋🙂
