Necrotic Nick, Jammin' Jon and Rin go over the debut solo effort from Slayer's Kerry King with his new album "From Hell I Rise" out now!
thrallsofmetal...
Mom, can we have Slayer?
We have Slayer at home.
_Slayer at home._
Necrotic Nick- Exactly lol
I appreciate the fact that you guys put a lot of effort into this review, including the listening, note writing, coordinating, recording, editing, and uploading. But store-brand Slayer is such an amazing description and summary, you probably didn’t need a whole review. But great job. Always enjoy the videos.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, honestly we could have summed it up with "it sounds like Slayer" but we wanted to go into it lol.
Appreciate the kind words about the insert art, fellas.
Gotta correct y’all about the cover though. Cover was done by same artist who did Repentless, Marcelo Vasco, and it is not AI. He even shared his whole process on ig.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, someone corrected us on the art being AI. It really does have that particular look but I'm glad it's not. The less AI art I see the better... unless it's our booger troll. We're fond of him lol. Yeah, the insert art is sick as hell and I was going through a bunch of your stuff while editing this. Man, you've got so much killer shit. That Godzilla headshot you did was fucking amazing in particular. I'm a huge nerd for shit like that.
Kerry said wants to put out a second album next year. I'm guessing we might get some different sound's on that one. Pretty much needed to stick to the Slayer sound for the first one to get established.
I really want to love a King / Bostaph project ,but they lost me when they called it Kerry King.
3's all around I would agree after giving it a once over liste. it exists & it's a shoulder shrug not sure if I'll pick this album up if I'm in the mood for slayer. Also agree that the splash page would of made a better cover.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, it's a decent album that admittedly I didn't have the highest expectations for. I'd jam some of these tracks again for sure but there's definitely a fair amount skippable tracks on here too. Yeah, James art was way cooler than the album cover itself by a longshot.
any plans to review new pathology and jamey jasta solo album?
Necrotic Nick- I don't think we'll have time to do them for a full review before we leave for MDF but those are ones I might snag for a collection update in the future.
I could be wrong but I think the producer also produced lamb of God and mastodon
Necrotic Nick- Yep. It's the same guy for sure.
Do you guys have separate channels?
Necrotic Nick- Nope. Just this one.
I'm enjoying the album. It isn't mind blowing or anything, but still some great metal for those of us who dig Slayer and Death Angel. There are a few moments which sound like classic Slayer. I really like Crucifixation, Rage, Toxic, Everything I Hate About You and From Hell I Rise.
When is the next album ranking? I really enjoy those.
Necrotic Nick- It's decent which was better than I thought it would be honestly. There's some bangers on this one for sure but there's still a fair amount of filler too. We're shooting for having the Meshuggah ranking up around mid June if all goes well.
@@thrallsofmetal Excellent. Love Meshuggah. Very tough to rank that band.
I enjoyed it. Old school thrash which is always welcome
Period. It's phukn thrash. It's all it needs to be
What song is playing in your intro. Its awesome! And you can understand what your hearing i like that kind of grunt and vomit
Necrotic Nick- It's the band Constricted witch features Rin on vocals and one of our other thralls Shredlord on guitar. The song is called "Third Generation"
Great stuff fellas. Slayer has had diminishing returns for me since divine intervention, though god hates us all had a couple huge moments. I think what made classic slayer was Jeff and Kerry’s interplay. Jeff’s songs are generally creepier and have an earworm-y quality but Kerry wrote some great stuff too: piece by piece, altar of sacrifice. But yeah… too much Kerry is too much. He is a one trick pony. It’s a great trick but I’ve seen it many times.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! While I still love Christ Illusion I'd have to agree. I've always said that Jeff was the best songwriter in Slayer and not just as a dig at Kerry. Jeff just has a sense of dynamics, scope and melody that Kerry didn't get as much. Kerry is great at the fast, aggro bangers and that's pretty much what I expected and pretty much got on here. It's a decent album overall but it only has small echoes of that Slayer magic.
The album proves how important Jeff was
Necrotic Nick- In a way, it kinda does.
It’s……fine. Not bad, but pretty generic. It’s diet Slayer at best.
That's basically my opinion as well. It's a meh album. Not bad, not great but an ok release. 5 or 6 out of 10.
well said 🤙
You guys are too nice !!
Necrotic Nick- We're just honest. No sense in trashing it if we didn't dislike it.
It ain't bad at all. Better than Repentless anyway. Mark is killer on Vocals. A solid 3/5
Jeff & Dave are Slayer Tom & King were just tag alongs………
Necrotic Nick- Jeff was the best songwriter in Slayer in my opinion.
I listened to a few songs from the album because I was busy all day and i thought it was a fine at best. Mark Osegueda sounded fierce. He was great. But I will say, While I am no guitar expert at all, it felt like Kerry King was out of place in the album compared to the others figuratively speaking
Necrotic Nick- It's a decent that pretty much delivers mostly on what was expected but does it pretty well. Mark definitely shines on here. He turns in a savage vocal performance. Kerry was pretty much the backbone here I'd say as he did write all this material but he rarely flat out shines on here in terms of his riff writing. There's definitely a few moments but he's not really consistently nailing it every time.
Since Kery arose from hell now, someone should ask him what that was like.
Necrotic Nick- Probably warm. That's my guess lol.
for a Kerry King solo album its decent, more Slayer riffs in the world is a good thing
Necrotic Nick- It's decent and honestly better than I thought it'd be.
i feel this is a very good start to what is kerry kings new job... i personally like the project..
Necrotic Nick- It's decent. I think he came out with a safe album rather than trying to be creative. Maybe the next one he gets more creative?
I don't like it but I don't hate it either. It's just kind of there. Sounds like a bunch of rejected Slayer songs, which makes sense because I'm pretty sure that's exactly what they are.
Necrotic Nick- That's close to where I am but I actually to like it a bit more than that. It's a safe thrash album that plays on Kerry's strength's rather than being creative and standing out a bit.
MDF in 4 days!!!
Necrotic Nick- Hell yeah, man! I'm stoked!
Kerry King is a bit of a numpty. While Tom Araya and Dave Lombardo always come across as decent, rounded (not round) dudes.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I'm team Lombardo pretty much all the way here lately. Tom's a bit a grump here lately and Kerry still seems to constantly stir the shit pot.
@@thrallsofmetal Lombardo is a legend, so vital to the classic Slayer sound
this album sounds metalcore to me and i couldnt listen it for the second time. sorry.
Just listen to a new single from Ice-T and Body Count, fucking brutal. 🤘
Listening to it now. This band has been on a fucking tear, haha
That new Bodycount song is killer
It's a brutal thrashing song Body Count never disappoints and Ice T the legend of Law and Order Special Victims Unit
Necrotic Nick- I dig the fuck out of that new Body Count song.
Zero fucks about this album, but I watched this video anyways lol
Necrotic Nick- Hey, we appreciate that, man. I hope it was at least entertaining lol.
lol is kerry gonna stay 14 forever in his mind? A forgettable bore to me
Kerry has always been my least favorite member of Slayer. And have always heard he is really an asshole of a person. But have always loved most of Slayer's Albums. But I believe that I'm not going to buy anything from Kerry out of principle. But none the less another great review from you guys.😁🤘
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, I can definitely see where Kerry can be off putting. His interviews here lately haven't done the promotion of this any favors but to be fair it's a decent album.
Sometimes the truth hurts Tom wanted to quit for years just stayed around for Jeff.
K.K.'s Slayer is boring as post Hanneman Slayer. Dime a dozen forgettable crap.
I think it sucks. Riffs just sound like Repentless only not even as good, and Repentless was in my opinion the worst Slayer album.
Necrotic Nick- I don't think it's that band and while I wasn't the biggest fan of Repentless I still think Slayer's weakest link is Diabolus in Musica.
Yeah, I expected a diet version of Slayer, and that’s what we got. Definitely not bad, but nothing that standout either. Mark’s vocals are great though.
Necrotic Nick- That's pretty much what I expected and pretty much what I got as well. Some solid standouts but a fair amount of filler too. Mark is a beast though.
Hey guys, first and foremost, glad to see Rin in a video and I know it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you guys. Good news is we are in the new home still unpacking and shit, bad news is, I expected very little from this album and not a fan. Very unfortunate to say, because I do like Kerry. Not on this though. No rush to get this. Keep it going and real Brothers Cheers! 🍻🤘🏼
Necrotic Nick- Sup, man! Yeah, Rin was laid up with the flu for awhile so he hasn't been able to join us so we're glad he's back and feeling better. Glad to hear you're settling into your new home, man. Hey, they all can't be winners in terms of albums. I thought this one was decent though. Kerry played it safe and did OK here. We'll see if he follows this up with something a bit more vibrant.
For sure, I hope that he does, it would be pretty cool stuff. Glad he is over the flu as well. This crap has been going around pretty bad as well. Enjoy MDF Brother!
This album sounds like parts of Annihilator, without the brilliance of Water's guitar leads, and Anthrax to me. Not a fan, the MVP to me is Paul Bostaph. Slayer operates like a well oiled machine, this has only one gear. 2.5/5. For the record, I love Slayer, all periods too.
The new guy is better than Tom was in 2018 or 2017 whenever I seen them. Album is repentless overproduced tho. 🥔
Love the Exodus shirt! What do u think about this? ua-cam.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/v-deo.htmlsi=sG9oYTLa5NHrM6DL. Testament in heels imho. I've seen the Big 4, Slayer twice. These ladies are no joke and metal AF. Granted, the majority of their music is power / speed metal but when they thrash it's Big 8 (+ Exodus, Testament, Death Angel, Overkill) caliber. Enjoy and love to see you do a reaction to one of their songs! 🤘
I totally don't agree about the vox. They sound like a metalcore vocalist covering Slayer. And a big part of the metalcore sound is this "winding up" into a scream (usually starting with a "w" sound -hence to word "eye" would sound as "wwwhy" lol) so i feel the timing isn't as tight as Rin says it is. The metalcore wind up screams i guess start on the 1, but the word doesn't get sound until sometimes the 1 of the next measure.
To each his own of course...
Music is good the vocals are not my cup of tea
Sounded generic and lame to me, like most the stuff he credited writing. Last great thing he was apart of was Christ Illusion imo
KERRY'S THE FUTURE... SLAYER THE PAST!!!💀🤘💀 CONGRATS KERRY!!!
Mark dose this a 1000 times better than tom weak araya this out of this world .
Necrotic Nick- Mark's a beast of a vocalist for sure. No arguments here.
I think it's a lot better than Slayer's last 3 albums so if you're a genuine Slayer fan there's a lot to enjoy about it
A metal bouncy castle. Niccccccey
Necrotic Nick- It does kinda sound fun lol
Was really hoping you guys were going to tear the album apart. Unleash your inner anger!
Necrotic Nick- I mean, there's no sense in tearing into this one if we didn't think it was dogshit, right?
Is anyone else a little bothered that this band is pretty much a supergroup and Kerry King names the band after himself? I get it's his "solo" project. He probably wrote most the material but from a business standpoint it's probably not the best idea. I can't speak for everyone else but who's going to purchase and wear a "Kerry King" t-shirt? He could have easily came up with a legit band name, but I get it. It's his solo project let's make it all about him.
Necrotic Nick- I think the name is just because they all thought that was a better route than calling it something else. From what I read it was just a place holder name that just stuck because they didn't come up with anything else.
Mark is my favorite thrash vocalist of all time so yeah he's a perfect fit
Necrotic Nick- He's up there for me for sure.
Didn’t love this. Felt far too overproduced, clean, and predictable. Gonna give it two stars. Some fun riffs and vocal moments, nothing blew me away or impressed me. It was alright 🤷♂️
Necrotic Nick- I liked it more than I thought I would but it's still kinda middle of the road thrash. I didn't have much of an issue with the production but it was all pretty much what I expected. Mark does sound great on this one though.
2.5/5 for me but better than expected. Band is solid though, especially Mark Osegueda.
Suspect this album would have been better and far more interesting if Kerry was open to collaboration. IMO, Kerry is just too much of a one trick pony to carry an entire album.
Necrotic Nick- I was close to a 2.5 but honestly I enjoyed a good chunk of it and even the filler songs weren't terrible... they were just kinda flat. If he does decide to do a follow up to this I'm curious if he works with the others in terms of the songwriting more. That might get him out of his element a bit.
Great album! My fav “new Slayer” record since Christ Illusion
Stand out performances from Mark on vocals and Bostaph on the kit 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Necrotic Nick- I think it's decent but I'm happy to see that it's finding some fans out there.
Overall I was disappointed. There isn't anything bad about the album, but it didn't have much that was memorable either. Just mid all the way through.
Necrotic Nick- Admittedly my expectations were kinda low to begin with some this ended up being better than I thought it would be. It's not great but I think it's pretty decent.
Is it weird I think the weak link with the band is literally Kerry King. Mark, Paul, and Phil are GREAT on this.
Necrotic Nick- I think Kerry and Paul did all the writing on this one but you can tell these are Kerry's riffs. He's kind of a one gear kinda guy but his supporting cast gave the songs a bit more character especially Mark.
When are you reviewing the new Gatecreeper? It is off the charts
Necrotic Nick- That's next on deck.
Yes I think this album sucks but as far as album covers man I mean it could look like spiritual healing's or albums cover You're a grim Reaper I don't really mind that AI Is album cover too much it doesn't bother me that Much i guess cause I've seen so many bad album covers I mean look at Deicide first album is a picture of a medallion
Necrotic Nick- It might not actually be AI so I'm told but it definitely puts off those vibes so I'm still not sure.
It's a good album, completely respectable, but it doesn't stand out. 3/5 is about right.
Necrotic Nick- It's a decent album. Kerry played it a bit too safe though.
3 and a half from me. Would have preferred a 10 track album, ditch a few of the fillers..
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I think they could have widdled this down a bit for sure.
All the snippets have sounded great so I hope this is just good, solid thrash. I’ll be happy if so 🤘
All the snippets have been generic and mediocre at best
@@fclefjefff4041 cool opinion, dude. It differs from mine and that’s A-OK
If repentless had the same production as this it would be a much better album....although without Jeff there is no slayer for me....but i liked Kerry"s album more than i thought i would...its an 8/10 for me...
EDIT....the cadences sound like Tom cause Kerry arranged the vocal patterns...
Necrotic Nick- Possibly. Repentless did have Terry Date though and his work costs a lot considering his resume. I didn't think this was bad but I did think it was a bit too safe. Yeah, I'm sure Mark knew what Kerry wanted from him.
@thrallsofmetal The guitar sound on repentless was terrible imo.... the new Kerry album packs a punch production wise yeah it is a bit safe but that's what Vitriol are for hahaha ha....stay heavy
Also some of those songs sound a lot like slayer songs for there next album if they wanted to
Necrotic Nick- Some of these were b-sides off of Repentless.
In my Opinion the Kerry King Album is in its whole much better than the last Slayer Album, also its Million times better than Diabolus in Musica or God hates us all.
I agree with the criticism of the Song Tension its builds up tension and leads to the weakest Song of the Album. The Same Problem had the Song When the Stilness comes , in the Moment it gets intresting it stops, biggest letdown of any Slayer Song.
But when in the next Kerry King Album they use Phil Demmel more often it would be absolut great.
Parts of the new Kerry King Album reminds me of Exodus Exhibit B
Necrotic Nick- I think it's decent. It's not as terrible as some people are making out to be but it's also still kinda middle of the road for me. It's definitely got some bangers on the album I would jam again. If Kerry does do a second one I'd be interested to hear that one as I don't think it would just be leftover Slayer material and some newer tracks.
@@thrallsofmetal i think when Kerry is doing a second Album Phil Demmel would get more influence, i guess than we would get something more people will like
GHUA kills it. What are you smoking?🤣
It's not listening, the singers is horrid and the riffs are watery
Necrotic Nick- Not a fan of Death Angel?
Rin is the goat, i cant belive hes 21 dosnt look 1 day over 19 🐐
Necrotic Nick- Well he's 23... again.
@@thrallsofmetal damn hes geting old
You guys should do a video on your favorite album covers
Necrotic Nick- That would take about 48 hours to cover I'd say lol
Who else is severely disappointed he didn't name the band Kerry and the kings
Good reviews guys. All your points are fair with this one. I thought it was ok, although admittedly, I am not the biggest Kerry King fans. I do think Mark's inclusion in the band is fucking genius.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Yeah, it's nothing super special but it really isn't a bad album at all in my opinion. It's got some legit bangers on here for sure and Mark kills it on vocals. That dude is still a beast.
One pass through, I like it, but not sure how repeatable or memorable it is. It sounds like I expected it to sound. We’ll see how these songs sound and go over live this summer on the LoG tour. 🤘
Necrotic Nick- There's definitely some stand outs I'd jam again but as to whether or not I'd jam the whole album again... maybe? I feel like I can just put on Reign in Blood and feel better about that choice.
I’m really digging this album. I’d probably give it 4 stars. Not perfect, does have 2 or 3 songs that are slightly filler to me but no songs that I would say are straight up bad. Nothing innovative here but I’m still digging the album. Mark’s vocals are definitely one of the biggest highlights of the album. I got to meet him and the rest of Death Angel last year through doing VIP. Nice guy. Some of my favorites on the album are probably Where I Reign, Trophies Of The Tyrant, Crucifixation, and Toxic.
Necrotic Nick- I don't think it's a bad at all. It's a decent thrash album with some legit bangers and a fair amount of filler in my opinion. I think Mark's vocals were my favorite aspect as well. He sounds absolutely vicious here and gives even some of the weaker tracks some life with his vocals. He's honestly one of my favorite thrash frontmen so I'm legit kinda jelly you got to meet him.
@@thrallsofmetal Yeah, it was cool to meet Mark. Death Angel was great when I saw them live. Any chance you guys can get around to doing rankings for Kreator and Obituary?
I haven't had a chance to listen to this yet (and I probably will considering Slayer is my favorite band of all time), but honestly the stupid statements Kerry made recently has gotten more of my attention than the album itself.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, I think the combination of Kerry's spicy interviews and the Slayer reunion really overshadowed the promotion for this to the point I almost forgot it was coming out.
going to see kerry king and the other guys live for the first time next month here in london uk
Necrotic Nick- Nice! I might catch them on the their tour with Mastodon and Lamb of God in August.
Outstanding review, as always. A lot of people online always hate on Kerry, and anything and everything he says and does. As for me, I am a fan of Kerry King. I liked the songs that I heard so far, and i ordered the CD. I'm looking forward to this album and tour.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I don't hate Kerry but I can also see why people don't like him. Outside of that, I thought this was a decent album. Nothing super flashy but it was alright.
I agree with your comment, and yes I'm a KK fan,, but this album was all hype. Maybe album 2!
Yeah he rules 😊
Snooze fest 1/5 I love Mark but the lyrics are laughable
Necrotic Nick- I thought it was decent. Lyrically it's OK but then again the last lyrics I read were on the last Six Feet Under album so that might have something to do with it.
@@thrallsofmetal I did not bother with Barnes! But back to king, if you like Kerry you’d enjoy this and I always preferred stuff Jeff wrote more!
I think it's way better than Repentless but nowhere near as good as any of the better Slayer albums
Necrotic Nick- I don't know. I kinda feel the same way about this one and Repentless. They're both decent but really don't go out of their way to be more memorable.
@thrallsofmetal there are a few subtle little melodies and harmonised guitar parts that I think take this above Repentless. Also, there is variation to the song structures that separate it from Slayer by numbers kind of tracks that Kerry has been pumping out for a good number of years.
I thought it was ok. Just couple of bangers. I gave it a 3 stars as well.
Necrotic Nick- It's pretty much what I expected with some solid stand outs and Slayer leftovers. It's decent.
This sounds like Slayer it was a good album. But Slayer going back on tour just for festivals will be just the beginning. I hope they don't go on tour because so many people pumped out so much money to see their "final tour". I myself paid for a meet and greet which was very dissapointing and expensive!! As much as I love Slayer this is just turning into a cash grab.
It’s no killing for revenge!
Necrotic Nick- Thankfully it's better than that.
Have you guys ever done a Fear Factory album discography?
Necrotic Nick- Not yet but that's one I'd love to do one of these days.
Honestly, I dont think it's fair for anyone to shit on Kerry for Slayer getting back together, because it wasn't his decision to end it, and he was pissed off when it did. Tom's wife has stated she spent a full year of nagging Tom to do it before he agreed. The Thing is when bands call it quits I believe that's how they felt at the time. But you get rested and you start to miss it. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Didn't Judas Priest do their Epitaph tour 13 years ago too? As for Kerry's new music I had my expectations set really low. Repentless and Christ illusion are my 2 least favorite Slayer albums, and Kerry was the major song writer on both. But I like his new songs more then those albums so I'll pick it up. Still Kerry is a one trick pony. He really doesn't have anything else up hs sleeve and he doesn't push himself. Metallica may not always give their fans the music they want, but they're not afraid to take risks and push themselves. Kerry pretty much said recently that people come back to Slayer for the same reason they do AC/DC, because they know they're going to get more of the same of what they like. Which doesn't bother me as long as the quality is maintained, but Kerry's ego will never let him admit it hasn't. At least Kerry can still edit himself and release decent length albums and not bloated slogs like Maiden and Metallica
Necrotic Nick- Bands are partnerships for the most part when you still have 2 or more of the original members so while Kerry wanted to keep going it couldn't be Slayer without Tom on board. I think Tom may have just been tired and felt he put in his time and wanted to get out of the limelight. I'm definitely not shitting on Kerry for getting Slayer back together but he has been a notorious shit stirrer in the past. As for this one, it's decent. I don't know if I'd take it over any Slayer albums (maybe Diabolus) but working it into a playlist of Slayer songs would work.
Got my shirt and cd fuck yeah!
Necrotic Nick- Hell yeah, man!
666/666 🐐🐐🐐
Necrotic Nick- That's a lot of goats lol
It’s not awful, but I found myself zoning out from it at times. It’s kind of the Metal I’d listen to in the background
Necrotic Nick- I can understand that. The standouts I found woke me up a bit but there's still a fair amount of filler here.
Great review guys
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man!
boring album generic flat and boring.
Necrotic Nick- So boring you had to say it twice?
@@thrallsofmetal epitome of boredom
Dudes🤘 Haven’t heard this yet, ordered this morning from Amazon though, should be here on Tuesday. Saw someone else’s thumbnail that said “it’s boring”. How can that be?
I would’ve bet that this album would’ve come out in 2019 at the latest, & I also would’ve bet that Kerry would’ve become an ambassador for metal. Similar to what Dave Grohl did for Revolver Magazines’ Golden Gods Awards, and making guest appearances on other people’s albums that would benefit from a Kerry King cameo.
The impression I’m getting is King without Hanneman, is like Iommi sans Geezer, Harris sans Murray & Smith, Tipton sans Downing, Trey Parker sans Matt Stone. There’s heart, but is there soul? Peanut butter & Jelly…some things just go together & compliment one another.
I’ll listened to your review right now, but I’ll form my own opinions later.
Jon…in the SFU Killing For Revenge review, you mentioned you were jamming the album while taking out the garbage. Do you work in a kitchen? If so, that’s really cool, because I’m a chef myself.
Man I missed Rin.
Necrotic Nick- We're glad he's back and healthy again.
Fantastic review as always! Will you review the new Pallbearer album?
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We plan on covering that one this weekend for sure.
Couldnt get into it. Its a shame. He brought some great players on board. And, I love Mark. The songwriting is just meh. I'll just wait patiently for a new Testament or Death Angel album.
Necrotic Nick- I thought it was decent. Nothing out of the ordinary but still pretty well executed.
I'll give it a spin just because of the rest of the band members on the CD and not to much of the douchery that is Kerry "Look at me! EVERYONE knows who i am! i AM Slayer!" King. And as you guys know I'm a DIEHARD Death Angel fan! ( #2 all time on my thrash metal list ) but i have to say Mark seems out of his element here i wished KK would of let the reigns loose and just let him sing instead of this gruff Anselmo like vocals Phil Demmel shines as well as Bostaph on the few tracks that came out so I'll check it out. BTW KILLER shirt Nick! you know what's up. ;)
Necrotic Nick- It's worth checking out for sure and honestly it was better than I thought it'd be. King's not the most creative writer that's for sure but there's some bangers on here and Mark is killer on vocals. Yeah, I think he was just giving Kerry what he wanted on here and that works for me. I wasn't expecting Kerry to let Mark unleash his full range as it probably wouldn't have fit with these songs. Phil and Paul did a great job as well for sure. Thanks, man! Exodus felt kinda appropriate for this one since Rin already had the Slayer shirt on.
I've liked what i have heard so far for the most part nothing ground breaking but decent. I plan to listen in full tonight after work.
Necrotic Nick- It's a decent thrash album and legit a bit better than I expected.
@@thrallsofmetal Kerry was always in Jeff's Shadow but he wrote what might be my favorite Slayer song Dittohead! That song is nuts..This album has a lot of that same energy and intensity. imo
I feel this album is a great reminder why I dont listen to modern thrash, aside from Havok and Warbringer. Also, I wish that instead of grabbing an already established vocalist, they recruited someone nobody knows, so it would feel more like its own thing. Side note: Are you guys going to the Lorna Shore tour? It's got Whitechapel, Kublai Khan TX, and Sanguisugabogg opening as well. It's gonna sell out, and i think it's going to be the most high-energy extreme metal show of the year. Just nonstop moshing and stage diving
Necrotic Nick- There's some good modern thrash out there but like anything it may take some searching out. As for the vocalist, I think he wanted people he knew to jump in here rather than him being the only big name in here. Yeah, I'm not a fan of Lorna Shore at all and honestly I'd probably only be there for Sanguisugabogg and then leave which is just a waste for me. If it sells out that's awesome for the bands though.
Mark sounds like GHUA era Araya, which is my least favorite Slayer album. I like the album overall but definitely feel it's too long and they/he should have axed some tracks. After 5 or 6 songs, I need a break from all the screaming. Yes, Two Fists is very hardcoreish for sure. Not sure if it fits here tbh (one of my ax songs). Agreed about the tracking and flow. In fact, like Rin says, hearing some songs in a playlist is more effective than listening to the album from start to finish.
Necrotic Nick- For me, I think they could have widdled this down to a really solid EP of the 5 strongest tracks and it would have been a lot better. Still, this is decent. Yeah, it's got some filler but there's some solid songs on here for sure. I think Mark just gave Kerry what he wanted for this one vocally and honestly it fits. I'm definitely with Rin in terms of this being easier to digest in a playlist rather than the full album.
Based on the first couple singles, I don’t even think I’m gonna check the album out. Kerry is a curious case. In some ways he’s been the face of Slayer for decades but he’s also arguably always been the weakest link in the band.
These lyrics are incredibly low effort for a man in his late 50s, the whole presentation has a juvenile aspect to it, and the singles have no charisma or replay value.
Necrotic Nick- It is worth a listen but to be fair it'll sound a lot like Slayer on most of it. Not really a good or band there since it depends on how you feel about Slayer. Kerry in a way has been Slayer's hard edged mascot for years but I'd have to agree when it comes down to the songwriting and leads both generally art as memorable overall as Hanneman's classic stuff. The lyrics didn't seem to bad to me but then again the last batch of lyrics I read were from Six Feet Under so these might just be good in comparison lol.
I'm down with this album. Yeah, it's no Reign in Blood (what is, though?). And yes, there is more than a few familiar sounding riffs to be found here. But you just gotta hand it to a guy who's in his early 60's and still wants to play some heavy, aggressive sounding music. I mean, I don't wanna hear Kerry King: The Lounge Music Years, ya know? So yeah, I'm definitely gonna get this album, and I'll definitely have some fun listening to it for sure.
Also, on a side note: Kerry King solo reminds me a lot of Jerry Cantrell when he was doing a solo thing when Alice in Chains were on a hiatus. Not in terms of style. But in terms of both giving you the closest thing to a new Slayer or AIC album without it being a new album from each band...
Necrotic Nick- I mean, I definitely wasn't expecting a Reign in Blood or anything like that but I will say this is pretty decent. I think he went with what he knows (and also what he had left from the Repentless sessions) and played to his strengths. It didn't always work but there's some bangers on this one.
Honestly i think because I was expecting kerry kings style tha wasn't what made it mediocre, what made it mediocre to me was marks vocals not being as diverse as I'm use to, I think of Mark did what he did in death angel wit his range of styles it mighve been better to me, but hey I still had moments of "oh that's new" from kerry so ultimately it wasn't bad but definitely could've had some improvement.
Necrotic Nick- I think Mark just gave Kerry what he wanted which if I had to guess was a more Araya-ish delivery overall. Mark has a tremendous range but honestly it probably wasn't going to be explored here. I do have to give Kerry some credit on some of the leads though. There's some stuff that wasn't his usual fair that I really dug on some of these songs.
Enjoyable stuff, fellas.
Commenting for the algorithm. ;)
When do we get new What’s Jon Jammin? 🤘
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! As Jon just moved recently he's still in the process of setting up his studio, getting a new computer and editing software so it's still a ways out but it should reappear this summer sometime if all goes according to plan.
Yet to give this one a listen. To be honest, having heard the singles and all, it seems like an album I've heard already. But i guess this is inevitable when everyone involved has 3-4 decades worth of musical legacy.
Are you guys going to review Jamey Jasta's new solo album? Quite the banger IMO
Necrotic Nick- It's decent. It's nothing groundbreaking but there's some bangers on it still. My expectations were kinda low to start but honestly it turned out to be a better listen than I thought it would be. We unfortunately don't have time before we leave for MDF to do more reviews than the ones we have planned out before we leave but I may snag the new Jasta and cover it in a collection update.
You know Rin is the only reason anybody subscribes to your channel, right?
Just kidding, you guys are all awesome.
As for this album, I may or may not check it out. I’m not the biggest Kerry King fan, but I love Slayer and this is basically a thrash supergroup, so who knows.
Necrotic Nick- I mean, he does bring his own unique flair to the channel so I can't entirely argue with that statement lol. Honestly, it's worth a go around. It's decent. It has some bangers but in the end it does kinda feel like a diet version of Slayer.
Shout out to Nick ! 🤘 By the way the dude on the right always trying to be funny is so annoying.... But whatever... Have a good one broski 🔪
Necrotic Nick- Rin's way more popular on the channel than I am lol
I was curious about this album but not super hyped for it, even though I love and miss Slayer. I'll probably pick it up this weekend. How does it compare to Slayers last couple of albums? ( Repentless, WPB etc. )
Necrotic Nick- I was more curious (even though I kinda knew what it would sound like) but it was essentially what I expected. There's some solid standouts on here but a lot of this definitely feels like Repentless cast offs. I might listen to this one over Diabolus in Musica but that might be it honestly.
Yeah I struggle to remember more than one song from this album after my first listen. Just felt like boring background music.
Necrotic Nick- To me it has some bangers and then a fair amount of filler. The one's that stood out to me sounded less like Slayer though for the most part.
This album is stock! Yes Mark knocked it out of the park, you guys bought the hype!
Necrotic Nick- How the hell did we buy the hype if we pretty much just gave it a slightly above average rating?
