- With Scotland about to embark upon their second consecutive European Championship campaign, we take a nostalgic look back to 50 years ago, when such events seemed more commonplace.
In 1974, Scotland headed to West Germany as the only qualifier from the UK and hopes were high that they could impress at what was their first World Cup appearance for 20 years.
Placed in an intriguing group with defending champions Brazil, the impressive Yugoslavia and the unknown quantity of Zaire, the Scotland squad was brimming with top class players such as the then reigning English league champions Leeds United's Billy Bremner, Gordon McQueen, Peter Lorimer and John Jordan, as well as European Cup winners Denis Law and Jimmy Johnstone. There was also a certain chap called Kenny Dalglish (then at Celtic) wearing the number 8 jersey.
What followed was a tale of hope, excitement, frustration, infuriating mathematics and ultimately some kind of redemption as Scotland exited the tournament on goal difference - the only side at the tournament not to lose a game!
This is the story of that campaign, told by BBC News reports and documentary footage of the time.

Sideburns never go out of style
The early 1970s must’ve been a terrible time for hairdressers 😂👍
1974 - the year of the Gents’ Barbers General Strike 😂
Effectively lost it for sitting back and taking it easy after going 2-0 up against Zaire, while Yugoslavia scored 9 against that same team. Thus, Scotland had to beat Yugoslavia in the final match or hope Brazil didn't score more than 2 against the poor africans. None of these two ever happened. Pity as Scotland was packed with talented players, could ve done much better.
Zaire managed by a Yugoslavian
@@andrewjohnston2850 actually managed by dictator Mobutu Sese Seko and his clan, it seems. 😉
Could've done better ?? LOL
Zaire were cheated out of their bonus by Mobutu and downed tools for their game against Yugoslavia.
I've heard about him! This dictator in the name of Mobutu Sese Seko...he seemed to be a right evil get!
After one of the most embarrassing defeats in world history v yugoslavia (9-0). If they'd conceded 1 more goal in that infamous 3-0 defeat v Brazil. He would allegedly punish all those players and even members of their families with some sort of weapon!
The most star studded Scottish team ever, arguably the best ever. But as ever, Scotland underachieved.
The 1978 and 1982 teams were pretty good, too.
@@user-hp6ls8qy6d And desperately unlucky. The '78 in particular was probably the best ever, but they started disastrously and beating the Netherlands 4-1 was an impossible target.
Great tournament.😂🎉
What happened to Scottish football? All the best players in England were Scottish in those days. What went wrong? Something do do with money, I guess.
Scotland in 1974: A World Cup Story | BBC Archive presents... 0809am 6.6.24 ua-cam.com/video/Os82UYqssSc/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared scotland? no expectations at all. i think some sap summed it up well when he said, and i obviously paraphrase, Scottish players (individually) are second to none but put those outlandish and skilfully outre players in a team together and they're like a bunch of idiots who have little or no concept of the game...let alone any idea of what they're to do with the ball. 60's/70's saw the rise of the scottish manager. there again... they seem to flourish when they're managing those namby pampy english, though... weird, isn't it? must be that celtic spirit of rabid individuality doin' for any semblance of team spirit. which is fine by me. but if you want to win a competition then i am thinking knuckle under and get on with it might be the best policy.... which the english should bear in mind. as they do have the players to win the big purses.
@@JJONNYREPP But what changed? Why did Scotland stop producing great players?
@@pintpot It was a form of escape for poorer people but those same people can't be arsed now. Pitches and other grass areas are devoid of kickabouts.
@@pintpot Comments on ‘Scotland in 1974: A World Cup Story | BBC Archive presents...’ 0819am 6.6.24 i think you already have that answer.... no dreamers coming down south now their own Scottish premier league is fit for purpose... and the continual continental and south american influx seems to have done for Uk based talent to shine thru. but you know this. it's been pointed out a million times before... akin to some old timer who goes to watch a rugby league challenge cup final cos it's traditional for him to do so, irrespective of who is playing, Scotland still have that: it's a day out mentality re: going abroad to watch the team perform on the big stage. in fact all home nations think like that - even the mighty england. so.... allow it's own home grown talwnt to flourish prior to signing names from abroad and all will be well again. a sad day when English or Scottish players can't geta game in their own leagues due to he fiscal dictates of their owners or the sponsors... so, yeah, money is an issue - whether we acknowledge that fact or no. just tell 'em you'll play for nowt - see if they pick you.... then dictate terms when they see what a fine player you are..... so the dream went - as posited by jimmy hill who decided players were mature enough to sort out their own financial affairs... so much so that there is talk of putting another cap on the amount a player can earn or be sold and bought for. which seems sensible ie: the players and the agents weren't that mature enough to foresee a heap load of b.s masking as concern for footballers' welfare being instigated when push came to shove... ffs!! it's the simplest game on earth and so much convoluted bollox exists where gettin' a game is concerned...a re these sponsors ethically minded, does the club own shares in other dubious concerns... is that player black enough.. is that white player trying to scupper the opportunities of alleged minority figures...? sod that!!! anyhow; england to win euro 2024. what say you?
@@heraldeventsandfilms5970 But isn’t that true in England and Wales too, but we can produce Rooney, Beckham, Scholes, Bale, Giggs, Rashford,…
I’m not a big football fan, but I always wondered about this
Players arrive in combi's!
Law, Johnstone and Bremner.
How much would they cost now?
rather watch the pigeon game from 78
Peru Peru Peru
Cubillas!
The best side Scotland ever sent to a tournament. Unlucky not to beat reigning world champs Brazil in their second game. The opener against Zaire ultimately cost them. Had to score more than two.
sadly scotland played zaire first and could only score twice, it has subsequently come out that zaire were let down and lied to by their government regarding payments etc so they threw the towel in when they played yugoslavia and brazil, obviously they'd have probably lost those games anyway but would they have conceded 9 against yugoslavs? a relatively poor brazil may not have scored three against them, all what ifs but i reckon scots would have gone through if they'd played zaire later, as it was if bremner had scored with that chance against brazil they would have regardless of anything else, best scotland side ever, some brilliant players in that squad
How we laughed
Scotland in 1974: A World Cup Story | BBC Archive presents... 0802am 6.6.24ali's tartan army. i think they scots have had it in for me ever since i jumped for joy when brazil trounced it 5 - 1 or some such in the world cup... amazing free kick by zico... ahahahahaha...... can't knock 'em, old brazil. i think that was 1982, though...
Tedious r.sole.
@@heraldeventsandfilms5970 indeed i am.... r u sirius. though?
Home before the postcards this summer. Same goes for England with their terrible defence.
England never got there or to Argentina. We English like to laugh at those Scottish World Cup performances, but we weren't there and what great players they had: Bremner, McQueen, Jordan, Gemmil
Scotland were famously the only unbeaten team in the 74 World Cup
lol, england have an extremely strong squad!...they should make it to the semis, at least.
@pintpot
You mention McQueen and Jordan..... and not Dalglish? 🤯
@@lyndoncmp5751 I thought he didn't play in the 74 World Cup, but you are right! I don't pretend to be a great football fan, hence the question.
