Schottland hat bei Turnieren immer extrem viel Pech gehabt. Bei der WM 1974 blieben sie zum Beispiel als einziges der 16 Teams im Turnier ungeschlagen und schieden trotzdem nach der Vorrunde aus, aufgrund der schlechteren Tordifferenz. Mal sehen wie es bei der EM 2024 in der Gruppe mit Deutschland wird. 😉

I know nowadays the 1978 Scotland team and Ally MacLeod are a bit of a punchline but if you looked at this team going into the World Cup to predict Scotland as a potential winner was not an unreasonable thing to say.
In this match this team really showed what they were capable of doing. If they could've found some form in their other group games and got through to the next round there's no telling how far this team could've gone.
OK I still think knowing what we know now about this World Cup if they'd have come up against Argentina there would've been external forces at play that would've done all possible to make sure Argentina won but the point is that this Scotland team had the potential to be one of the all time great World Cup sides.

In this match Scotland was much better than Holland.
It deserved to win 5-2 or 6-2. Two goals unfairly refused and 1 shot on the crossbar deprived the Scots of a deserved qualification. ( Scotland would have qualified to the second round thanks to a better goal average than Holland) .
Scotland should advance at the expense of Netherlands if H2H result was used instead of goal difference as the preferred tie breaker, as is adopted nowadays.
Same situation in 1974: Scotland scored more goals than Brazil in the 3-way tie league between Scotland, Yugoslavia and Brazil.

You say anything, the Dutch had no certainty of qualifying either as first or second, they could not afford to make calculations. Because if the referee had not refused 2 goals to Scotland, Holland would have been eliminated due to a better goal difference in favor of Scotland. Holland lost because Scotland was better and Dutch were saved by the referee from a wider defeat that would have eliminated them. That's all.

@@abelbolbo4339 Holland deliberately took it easy and didn't mind losing by the odd goal because they wanted to avoid Argentina in the next round. As soon as Scotland got a two goal advantage the Dutch went straight down the other end and scored. They did what Denmark should have done in 1986 against West Germany.

Ganz abgesehen, dass sich die meisten hier über ein Weiterkommen Schottlands gerade gegen die Niederlande gefreut hätten, ist es einfach schade, dass die klasse Leistung der Schotten so nicht den verdienten Erfolg gehabt hat. Es bleibt immerhin ein unvergessliches Tor von Gemmill und der Treffer von Dalglish war ebenfalls sehenswert vollstreckt.

Such a waste. The golden years of Scottish football, though the '86 team was probably better. Scotland lost their first game to a vibrant Peru, but all was not lost; the second game was against lowly Iran; a team of amateurs who could only draw with. It was here that Scotland lost this world cup. Looking at the quality of that squad, they could've gone all the way.

@@roddywilson8911to be exakt it was the third match and both German teams were already qualified for the next round .Finally it was the best lost of Germany 1974 ever since we would have never made it against the Netherlands and Brazil in the second round.
