Had no idea this was filmed, remember it well, we bought tickets on the street. Johnny came on and everyone was up out of their seat and he had us on a ride with his band just giving it all, the place was rocking! Golden Earring came on after and people left including us, they were nowhere near that raw energy. Thank you Johnny Winter!
This is Johnny in his prime. Licks are endless, clean, & lightning fast. Winter inspired countless guitarists to acquire technique. An early blues shredder!
Yeah, so great to see Johnny healthy and at the top of his game. He definitely came to play this night. No phoning in shit here. Been a fan since his first Columbia release "Johnny Winter." Fun trivia fact: Mike Bloomfield was playing with the Electric Flag at Fillmore East and told the crowd "You gotta hear this young blues player", and brought Johnny up on stage to jam. Just so happens that Columbia Records execs were in the audience and were so impressed they signed Johnny that night. I know it sounds a little like "urban legend", but I DID read this story on a music website. I'll try to find the source for y'all.
I was at this show and what a show it was . Believe it or not Johnny was the opening act for Green Earring. The place was packed when Golden Earring came on by second song they had to pull out there #1 Radar Love, as there was probably only a third of the crowd left. Everyone was there for Jonny he was killin it that night big time.
I had the privilege of seeing him live at the Hampton Roads Colosseum in 1973. I was 22. Me and two or three buddies drove down out of the mountains of Virginia to see him play. His show was amazing. He was the quintessential guitar slinger. His speed licks were totally original, and his style was as unique to him as Hendrix' style was unique to him. The greatest guitarists develop their own unique style. They develop a trademark sound upon which no one can ever really improve. It's theirs and belongs to no one else. We may hear nuances of other guitarists, but when melded together with their own sound, it becomes all their own. There will NEVER be another Johnny Winter just as there will never be another Jimi Hendrix. These guys were bona fide trailblazers, pioneers of a whole new genre of music. That is why 100 years from now they will still be the gold standard for blues-rock guitar. Lots of copycats out there, but few great originals.
An old stoner friend turned me onto Johnny when I was 16 in '78. I owe that old boy. Johnny's music has been one of the backdrops of my life. He was one of the reasons I kept playing the guitar after I started at 14. "Sweet Papa John" from "Captured Live" was then and has always been my favorite guitar solo from any player.

LMAO ! opened up for Golden Earring ! are you kidding me they should have been sweeping up after Johnny finished tearing the place down, Best there ever was !!!!!!! RIP Johnny
@@ontariobuds about 75% . They were booked as headliners because they had had a recent hit "Twilight Zone" The promoters unestimated Johnny's Toronto fan base. You could see the look of disappointment on Barry Hay's face when he came out and yelled "Hello Toronto" but he quickly recovered and Earing played great anyway. It was the best J.W concert I've ever seen, and I've seen him at least 9 or 10 times. "Keep on Rockin' and a Rollin' Don't ever settle down" etc.
Lol. I’ve heard the same story of bands having Rory Gallagher open for them. How great it would’ve been to see Rory and Johnny play together. 2 very different styles/players but all time bests IMO.
Chris Baugh Man, WTF? Are you coming in here just trying to start a shitstorm on my channel??? There's certain parts of this country where that statement will get you killed! It's like this...Johnny and Stevie are individual virtuoso's in their own right. Neither one can be compared to anybody else. Neither one has to prove anything to anybody else. I love and respect both of them dearly. If you made the statement as point of conversation, that's cool. We all have an opinion. However... if you made the statement just to see what crap you could stir up, then I might have to step in. The Rev. Bob Channel is about loving and sharing the music. This isn't the place to fight about it. Always be excellent to each other and enjoy the show!
of course this is a matter of my own taste. I love SRW to the bone but JOhnny is my biggest inspiration. all about respects for these great dudes. peace and love from dublin Ireland from a humble guitar player ;-)
I was there too! about 15 rows in front of John Paris. I went to a lot of Massey shows because it sounded amazing compared to anywhere else in TO. You can tell this sounded awesome in that room from this video. I saw Johnny about 20 times, I really liked the shows... I wasn't much of a record listener, I had tickets to all the concerts and sports. It is a treat to relive this event.. Damn I miss Johnny... he was a real gentleman.
Massey Hall was a very acoustically designed venue. Remember going there as a kid with a school event. TSO were playing. Even back then I could here the fine sound in that place. They only problem with the place, as I found out one time, is if you get seated behind a pillar.
I believe this was Johnny opening for Golden Earring. Rick Santers Band also was a support act. I was at that show and remember half the house exiting after Johnny played. I stayed for two GE songs and then bolted for the bar, too.
Was at this show, Wednesday April 6 1983. Great show. Golden Earing lead guitarist ran out for the first song and tripped , fell on his guitar, got up kept playin'. lol.
A Great Artist and a cool dude. Loved his show when I saw him live in Toronto - I was a little teenager and it was Prom Night - Best EVER Prom Party was Johnny Winter in Concert ! Nobody who saw him live was ever unhappy. Smiled for days.
I have seen John Dawson Winter the 3rd 5 times always in the front row at age 16,17,& 18! With only 4 words. To say. The ibcredible, number one,R.I.P. Iove you! Respectfully:Robert H. Ferguson Junior!!!
Johnny Winter was my first concert at 13. He was my guitar hero. I'd drag my Dad's mono speaker into the bathroom so I could listen to Johnny Winter Live And... while taking a shower to get psyched up for major track meets. I was a sprinter, and listening to JW got me amped up to EXPLODE out of the blocks! Actually, the day after that first show I had a meet, but my hearing was blown from the night before. I remember nodding my head to my coach as I watched his lips move; all I could hear was a steady tone. I had one of my best long jumps of the season because nothing could distract me! I saw JW once per decade in the 7O's, 80's, 90's and around 2007. Best show was 1998 up in Boulder. Both his playing and vocals were exceptional. Unfortunately, the last show I attended was painful to watch. I had to walk out because it was just too difficult to see Johnny struggling to keep up with the band. I still say the intro to Be Careful With A Fool is the greatest opening to a song I've ever heard.
I handed him a joint on stage in Knoxville tn played with one hand. Hit it gave it back then he took a long draw on my bottle of Jack in the black, then gave it back I'll never forget him spinning blowing smoke playing like J. W. WOW
Total agreement. Both his bandmates were Totally professional too....just as Johnny always was.....the sound on this video is heaven to my Stereo headphones. Nice to see Johnny remembered for the talent & kind Soul he truly was.

The best guitar player ever! RIP Johnny!
LMAO ! opened up for Golden Earring ! are you kidding me they should have been sweeping up after Johnny finished tearing the place down, Best there ever was !!!!!!! RIP Johnny
+guitarhack210 I wonder how many people didn't stay for the Golden Earring concert?
Thanks for posting this. I bought a VHS tape of it back in 1986 and played it over and over, so great.
the greatest white blues guitar player of all time. period
SRV was better.
Greetings Dublin. Thanks for stopping by! Have a good week!
thanks buddy, I'll be playin' the blues tonite, as it should be ;-)
I was there too! about 15 rows in front of John Paris.
Master at work
holy crap!! I was at this show, 3rd and last time I saw him...it was an awesome night
I believe this was Johnny opening for Golden Earring. Rick Santers Band also was a support act. I was at that show and remember half the house exiting after Johnny played. I stayed for two GE songs and then bolted for the bar, too.
Go Johnny go go go
One of the best,,,
Was at this show, Wednesday April 6 1983.
I was there....wicked set....unfortunately had a migraine and left halfway through the Golden Earring set...Johnny was on his game..
Wow this concert was an opening for Golden Earring ? That sucks, the same year saw an entire Johnny concert at Washington D C .
I have seen John Dawson Winter the 3rd 5 times always in the front row at age 16,17,& 18! With only 4 words. To say. The ibcredible, number one,R.I.P. Iove you! Respectfully:Robert H. Ferguson Junior!!!
I was at that show!
His brother Edgar is a great musician. Must be great genes. R.I.P. Johnny.
Legend
He had them after the first song, also one of the finest vocal performances I've ever heard by him, AWESOME!
RIP Johnny Maestro, there was none better and likely never will be.
I handed him a joint on stage in Knoxville tn played with one hand. Hit it gave it back then he took a long draw on my bottle of Jack in the black, then gave it back I'll never forget him spinning blowing smoke playing like J. W. WOW
There's a year's worth of lessons every 4 bars. One of the best.
Johnny is legend but so is this line up - the best, tightest, most exciting and most rocking bass and drum pair I have ever heard.
KnightOwl2006 It was a logical extension of Hughes and Randy Jo Hobbs...
Total agreement. Both his bandmates were Totally professional too....just as Johnny always was.....the sound on this video is heaven to my Stereo headphones. Nice to see Johnny remembered for the talent & kind Soul he truly was.
what a genius. I have been into the blues for years but when you listen to johnny you never come back
Johnny was SOOOO GOOD IN THE EARLY 80S
