Fairfield Circuitry Roger That! Radio Noise in an Effect Pedal

- An overview of Fairfield Circuitry’s newest effect pedal, Roger That!-a gnarly, distortion-type effect inspired by the noisy artifacts of radio technology.
In this video I’ll go over what Roger That is, how it works, and I’ll share lots of demos using Roger That as a standalone instrument, as a processor for acoustic instruments, in combination with Eurorack modular and semi-modular synthesizers, and in effect chains with other pedals.

PS: You don't need any special gear to do this-just a computer with VCV Rack (which is free to download).
It's so refreshing to have a youtuber who highlights 1.) noise specific devices and 2.) how they interact with more "standard" gear-- and in depth at that! Loving it. Keep it up!
In the vast wasteland of pedal demoing I find this to be a fresh breath. Whereas most channels market themselves as small homemade burger joints, they actually serve Macdonalds in different wrappings. After watching this I fell exactly like I do after I have eaten a good homemade burger.
Sarah, I think I speak for all of us when I say that you have set the bar for pedal demos in 2023. What an odyssey! 🔊🥰
Thank you!! ❤❤
not really. collector//emitter does 10x a better job

This takes me back to my childhood days after I finally got my RadioSchack 120 in one electronics lab’s diy radio transmitter circuit to work, and I heard my own voice coming in on my dad’s receiver. THAT was the beginning of recording music performances for me! I ALWAYS had to record stuff through that darned diy transmitter, to the tuner. To think that other fellow audio enthusiasts would agree with my opinion, that there is something worth playing with in an effect pedal like this. It makes me feel a deeper connection with the wider World at large, and I find a certain assurance that I’m not crazy like my family says.
The range of crushingly inspiring textures and signal degrading possibilities on display here is awesome!
Thanks so much!
Wow awesome video so interesting!
Fairfield Circuitry is one of the best company out there now..insane effects!
And Sarah the recording quality of this is just great..such a clean take with such a noisy device (that trumpet was huge in it!)
Glad you liked it!! :)
Fantastic sounds! Very unique piece of gear
I love this demo! A true experimental audio artist experimenting with a most unusual device!! Glorious sounds, clear and intelligent commentary. I cant thank you enough. I’ll subscribe now. So that i can explore your other posts
I just found your channel from looking at Fairfield’s Roger that reviews.
I watched some of your other videos and they are really good.
I like your enthusiasm and your easy to listen to.
Please keep making more videos like these.
Keep holding onto your passion.
All the best,
Michael
Love it. Great job Sarah.
Thanks!
This was absolutely amazing!!! I almost have no words lol, all the examples you used were so cool! And when you were making noises in the mic and the scream was almost haunting, the cool stuff you could do live with it could be endless, I could see the band Godspeed you! Black emperor using this. Well done!! New sub here 😎🤘
Great video. Super gnarly results⚡--I love it!!
Thanks!
very cool demo
OMG - I was wanting to build something like this and here it is!
Thanks for the morfbeats👍🏻unique and stunning instruments
You are a genius. You had me sold with the envelope follower demo
Really enjoyed your F.C. Roger That! demo, played through your trumpet. Fairfield Circuitry really makes top notch unique dynamic effects. Recently purchased their Shallow Water - Special Edition SKFM. Remarkable modulator. Cheers.
New sub keep up the good work
Great video! Thanks 😃 the acoustic instruments and vox sounds were amazing.
😎🤘😃👍
Thank you!
Getting Brainiac vibes from that vocal bit. Might have to buy this! Great video!
Thank you!
This thing makes noises like sounds received from a broken future. I LOVE IT
Fantastic demo, Sarah. Love the MakeNoise/Strega, Mother 32, and Hydrasynth sections and all the FX chain combos. Bring the noise! ⚡️
Thank you!
Wow. I'm impressed by the fact you're so calm, so nice in your explanations, and then release the abyss of the human mind, travelling through those experimental sounds in a glorious epic of tones! I came from guitar, and I've already been seduced by this thing working with it, but this is what dissolves all doubts: I need to buy a Roger That! I'm always looking for those harsh, noisy, and dirty soundscapes, and I think I found what I wanted. Thanks for this incredible video, it is as helpful as it is enjoyable: you get an additional subscriber!
The "super calm and gentle" to "wall of hellish noise" continuum is the canonical SBR experience hahaha
that got quite fun
That pedal and what you do with it are both very impressive! Finally some real world example of sounds made by a creative musician and not just a guitar noodler. Have you tried it with a mic AND an amp? I play accordion with a mic and most drive effects gets me into instant uncontrollable feedback in a live context.
Great video, have you seen or heard the Dreadbox pedal wich also have CV control ?
The demo with your voice reminds me to Mike Patton
That Strega/0Ctrl/Roger Trio is WHEW
This pedal is incredible. Death Grips at 17:08
29:05 did you sample Arianna Tysinger - Siren
maybe muse near the end?
Lmao ive never seen you before and the heavy contrast between all the noise at the beginning and then your soft voice is a shocking surprise
Wow, I feel like I went through a nightmare. Thank God it's over.
Great video though, thanks.
I was especially struck by the contrast on second 33, 34….like going from hell to heaven…
I’m gonna continue watching now...
does it actually have an RF tuner on the PCB or what? sounds like it's just FM modulating an audio source with (white/colored) noise... cv input for 'tune' is a nice touch
their next pedal should be heterodyne and dash
How weird does your trumpet playing get? Cause, man, id love to have some crazy trumpet parts in some of my band "Void Noise'" songs.j
as always supernice video. but a lot of drive with all the sounds. more the distording character of the pedal.
This pedal is like the gristleizer on acid!
😃
is this Rezz?
someday someone is going to invent a device that unlocks Sarahs full potential... and then goku is going to have to watch out
good review but i think it would be very hard to use this effect musically unless you were into the noise genre. what would have been cool is if they had integrated that ham radio sound (like the radio communication you hear in star wars). Years ago Moog had actually made an april fools joke about a new moogerfooger they were making that was basically what this pedal does lol.
24:42 hear me out...
If product demos were produced by NPR…
Sounds like shit…. I LOVE IT
